Associating apps with file types

I tried posting this is the Safari forum and got no response, so I thought I would give it a try here:
I used bit torrent for the first time in my life yesterday to download Slackware 12 for a spare PC. Not knowing much about how torrents work, I downloaded an application called Aquisistion.
When I click on a link for a torrent, it downloads a .torrent file to my desktop. For example: slackware-10-1.2-install-d2.torrent
I double click on the file and Aquisition fires up and starts the transfer. Can Safari be configured to automatically open and use Aquisistion when clicking on a link for a torrent?

  • Need to avoid header When using GUI_DOWNLOAD with file type "DBF"

    Hi ,
I am downloading internal table to excel on the desktop using GUI_DOWNLOAD with file type "DBF".
Internal table I use do not have any header.
But I do see the header in the downloaded file.
It displays 1 row as " F1  F2 F3..ETC" heading for each column.
Is there any variable we need to set to suppress header.
    Thank you,
    Kumar

    Hello Dilip,
I tried using GUI_DOWNLOAD with FILE TYPE as "DBF", and i see the problem as mentioned. My question to you is:
    1. Why do you need 'DBF' format?
    2. Is it required to save the file as '.CSV'? Can you not try to save in '.XLS' file?
    Plz revert back.

    Hi
I can't open sql files with file type .pck. They are opened as a package. The icon is a package too. (Worked fine in 4.0)
    My settings:
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks, but that doesn't help
To specify it more precisly: I can open such a file, but it is not opened as a sql file. The icons you see above left are the icons of the files (not of the packages).

  • Getting path to application associated with file type

    Hello,
I'm looking for a platform-independent way to get path to application associated with given file type. Desktop API introduced in JSE 1.6 seems to do this, but it only lanuches the app.
    Any suggestions will be apprecieted

Okay then, how can I open the file in it's associated
application AND get the Process object of app's
instance? If it doesn't bother you that the app will only work on windoze, then you can use the shell "start" command on the file.
Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd", "/C","start",filePath});However waitFor() will only wait for the process to be launched, not completed. Since your program doesn't know what Windoze will choose to launch, this makes sense.

  • "Set Associations" will not allow Office 2013 Programs / executables to be Associated to a file type

Have Office 2010 and 2013 installed (installing 2010 first, then 2013) and after Windows Update applied Office 2010 SP2 later on, all of my Office file associations (except for Outlook, it points to 2013 as
expected) open up Office 2010 programs.  And I'm happy that some programs (Access for example) continue to default to Access 2010.
Ok, so the problem is that for those Office programs that I want to associate to 2013 versions (Excel, PowerPoint & Word as the biggest examples), when I go into "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default
Programs\Set Associations" and pick .doc as an example (I've also tried .xls, .xlsx, .docx) and click on "Change Program", then "More Options", "Look for another app on this PC", and finally navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office 15\root\office15" to double click on excel.exe or winword.exe as appropriate, the selection is ignored (i.e. the icon doesn't change to the Office 2013 style and double clicking on .doc file opens it up in Word 2010).
I do understand there is a "Fix" by either repairing the Office 2013 install or I believe to have seen a Microsoft downloadable fix program, though I do not want to run these as I'm told they will reset
all file associations to Office 2013, and there are still a couple of programs I want to open up in Office 2010, till I get a comfort level with Office 2013.  Also realize that once Office 2013 SP1 comes out, it will do the same thing that Office 2010
SP2 did and change the file associations to 2013, whether I want it to or not, hopefully by then I won't have much need for Office 2010.
Also, I find it troubling that the "Set Associations" will not allow me to select specific programs, and I wonder which other File Associations has Microsoft felt appropriate to restrict access.
Look forward to the feedback as it pertains to the above (which I realize is unique to my IT Testing needs).
    Thank you,

    Hi,
We can try to change the file associate in Registry key:
For all users on this computer, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes.
For current user account, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes. If there is no such extension, please create new keys for it.
    Hope these could be helpful.

  • Problem with file type... some files have been changed to folders... Help !

    Hello,
I have problem with some files that are located in Library / Quicktime.
I have 7 files in that folder and all are .component files.
3 of them used to look like a lego block :
    DivX Encoder.component
    macam.component
    MayaIFF.component
But today, I have accidentally change them into folders (and I don,t Know how...) So instead of having thoses 3 files with the lego block icon , I have 3 folders and If I click on thoses folder, It open like a standard folder, so I see the "content" folder inside them...
How can I change it back to the .component file type they should be... I know how to change the type of a file, but since they are now folders, there's no "file Type" associated with them (right click / infos)...
    Help !

There are lots of things that are in fact folders, but the Finder treats them as "files"--in the sense that normally when you select one you cannot see the contents of the folder. One way this is done is by the use of certain extensions, for instance .app, .pkg, .mpkg, .bundle and .component all tell the Finder to NOT display the folders as folders. If you do a GetInfo on them and the name is still "whatever.component" and the Kind: Component is still showing, and you haven't noticed any problem with QuickTime, then don't worry about it.
Those are all third party QT components. If they aren't working, you may have to reinstall them from the original source.

  • Problem with file types.  Please help

I recently downloaded the entire Sun Java Tutorial and have started to go through it. At the end of the first main trail about inro to OO Programming, there is a question/answer portion. There are a couple of excercies where you are to go through the ClickMe app and change some things around. When you click the 'click me' hyperlink, it would open the source in a new Internet Explorer window. That didn't work well for me as I can't very well edit anything in an Explorer window. So, I decided to change and do an 'open with' and used NotePad. Well, it didn't open it in a very readable format... so I thought 'forget it' I want to get it back to the IE format where I can at least read it easily. So, I've started to dig around and now I can no longer do an 'open with' and if you go into the View, Options, File Types 'JAVA' isn't listed anywhere in there.... BUT if I try to add a new type it says'java_auto_file' is associated with another program. So, then I got into REGEDIT and tried to modify the 'java_auto_file' key to use InterNet Explorer... but now I can't get the thing to even open in IE. HELP? If anyone can do this and see what I'm talking about can you figure out how to get me back to how it was when I pulled off the Tutorial....I'm lost. Thanks

Try Netscape -- it lets you see the source files .java when you click on the link.
Messing with Window's Registry is risky business. Try to find the old working copy and restore/rename it.

  • Save dialog with file type selection

I'd like to give the user a save dialog with a dropdown
showing a list of file formats to select from, as is pretty much
always the case in normal save dialogs (even if there's only one
acceptable file type.) It servers both as giving the user options
and letting the user know the file format being saved to.
I can't seem to figure out how to do that in AIR.
File.browseForSave does not take a FileFilter array, and does not
provide a default name option. I can get the default name by
resolving a path for the File object first, but this doesn't show
the user the various filetype options they have, and even if they
knew them they would have to manually type them in the dialog. Am I
    missing something?

    FOUND THE PROBLEM!
I have several timelines in the project, and most of them are titled things like "window dub w/timecode". I found one that was titled "interviews" and tried to render that. The Save dialog appeared, only when I rendered from THAT timeline. So I started to look for differences between the timelines.. then it dawned on me that all the timelines that don't render have the "/" character in the title. Adobe should warn that this character is not allowed, rather than allow it and then behave weirdly. Could have saved me hours of thrashing about!

Arch can't "remember" which program to use for certain file type
    Example:
after update arch try to open everything (mp3, avi, doc, odt, rar.......) with gedit, when I set mplayer for avi, Arch try to open every file with mplayer, I set writer for odt files Arch try to open every file with writer and .....

  • Creating an iOS App with File Sharing Activated

From what I can decipher, the only way for a user to retrieve a document created by an iOS app is through iTunes, but only if the app has file sharing activated.
Is there a way to create an iOS app in Flash CS5.5 and make it a file sharing app?

I used the following code for sharing files to documents directory, and it works just fine. I am able to access the files copied by the app.
I made this app using Flash Builder. I will share another one using Flash Pro, soon.

         <s:Button id="button" x="292" y="220" width="184" height="50" label="Share Data" click="shareFile()"/>

Can you please share the app/more details about the issue in the meanwhile?

  • Help with file type

In Adobe Camera Raw, is there a way to select the file type that you save your image in. It seems .dng or DMG are the onle file types, or am I missing something. I would like to save my orginal CR2 file and save a copy in jpeg for others to open. Please help.

NO.  Don't click on Save Image Button.  Instead go to:
    File >> Save as
You'll get a dialog like this one:
You need to click on the arrow shown in the red box to select the various file types.

  • Apps not associating with file types

We have downloadd the CC version of Illustrator and Photoshop, and if we double click an .ai, or .psd file, they do not automatically open up and instead the windows files association dialogue opens up.. and they not not appear in any file associartions, even if we then file the .exe file, it still does not link. This happens on a W7 computer and a W7 laptop. Is this a bug?... how is it fixed?

Please stop saying that - it IS a bug. The installer script for CC 2014 and the uninstaller script for CC "original" have a fundamental mismatch in their use of file class IDs, so if you install a CC 2014 program then uninstall the CC version, it will remove the association and leave the class pointing to the old ID - which the new 2014 executables are not registered for because at the time they were installed, they saw an existing class handler and silently ignored it. They should have forced ownership as they would do in a fresh install, but there's a SNAFU in the script.
The way to do it is to treat the new version as an old-school replacement, not an in-place upgrade:
Uninstall the CC 'original' apps, choosing to keep your preferences. Your file associations will show the old class ID (such as "Adobe.Illustrator.17").
Restart the CC Desktop App so it recognizes the changes (no need to actually reboot the machine).
Install the new CC 2014 versions - they will sense their file assocations are orphaned and correctly capture them. Any preferences lest behind will be imported, but plugins won't.
If you've already done it the "wrong" way - installed CC2014 apps then removed the older ones - and your associations are borked, uninstall them and reinstall them - again choosing to keep your preferences. That will convince the install script for the 2014 releases to take over the class IDs again. You cannot have both versions of a CC app installed at the same time and easily switch the class registrations
The workaround being suggested - to manually associate an extension with the executable - doesn't solve the problem, as when installed properly each application actually registers version-aware handlers, so you get a different icon depending on the version of the file you're looking at (see screenshot below). That visual warning is really important for a number of users and cannot be manually implemented.

  • Associating APP_USER with file stored in database

I'm using APEX 3.0 with 10g database. I have an invoice report that references the APP_USER as the person who generated the invoice, and his or her name appears at the bottom of the invoice. I need a way to associate the person who is the APP_USER with a .pdf signature file, so the person who generates the invoice is "signing-off" on it, and then can email the invoice to the customer with this signature at the bottom. Is there a way to provide logic between the BI Publisher report and the application/database so each APP_USER is associated with an assigned .pdf signature file?

    Hello,
If you include session state information, in the xml that is send to BI Publisher the APP_USER is included.
So in your BIP Word template (rtf) you can include the APP_USER field.
