I believe the DSL-N66U that the OP is after, does not need the OR Modem:
True two-in-one modem router with Ethernet WAN and DSL WAN
Dual system design offers more performance and flexibility for wired and wireless connections
Gigabit Ethernet ports for the fastest, most reliable internet performance
File and printer sharing via two multi-functional USB ports
ASUSWRT dashboard UI for easy setup, signal monitoring, and network application control
Auto-detecting ADSL/VDSL connection with CD/manual-free setup
Finest P2P experience via 300,000 concurrent data sessions

  • Does Time Capsule play well with older Airport devices?

Hello.  Today I am likely coming home with a Time Capsule and intend to rebuild my home wireless network.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the value/worth of attempting to connect older airport devices to the new network? I have a VERY old (1st gen?) Express, a 2nd or 3rd Express, and an Airport Extreme which, here on my lunch break away from home, I'm frankly not sure which age it is. I have been using the Extreme as the Base Station and intend to wipe it and set up the TC as the Base Station.
There are a few areas of our house that don't get good signals currently. If they STILL don't, should I try to connect any of these older devices as extenders? Or will they not play well with the TC because of their different letters (g/n/etc.?)
Thanks in advance. We'd been planning on getting a TC for a long while but found out this week that our Extreme is somehow getting in the way of our network connection... So I'm hoping that a brand new set-up will improve our speed and entire system. We have a household of many devices--one iMac and more than four iOS devices (potentially depending on who's awake) running on a 60Mbp/4 upload system. For a long time we've had internet but at 23-26 Mbp tops.
Any of your thoughts or ideas would be welcome.
    R

Old G wireless express should be retired.. it will not work well in the current network. Although people do use them just for audio use.. the later OS have ceased to be able to set them up. G extreme is of no use.
You can use anything that is N wireless.. but you need to be sane and rational about using a router that is 3-6years old.. as it might cause as much problems as it fixes. Certainly there is nothing wrong with having a go.. as long as you are not too hopeful.
The best way to get wireless in a dark corner is to run ethernet over to that area.. and run a wireless AP there. Your N apple airport can function as AP. Even using EOP (ethernet over power) can sometimes work.
If you try to extend wireless wireless to the dark zone.. you cannot place the AP in the dark zone.. as it will get no signal to extend.. it needs to be able to pick up good signal and still have sufficient range to reach the end of your zone. That suggests if it doesn't work now.. it won't work in this new role either.. but no skin off having a try.

  • Does Windows Defender Play well with TB?

In response to my post about messages arriving that had blank subjects and 1969 dates, someone suggested that I exclude the folder with my profile from scanning by Windows Defender in 8.1.
I tried this and it did not work at first but now with TB 31.0 I did not get a weird message with no subject when I did <get messages> on a single message.
I am very uncomfortable about not scanning incoming mail and would like to hear what other think about this.

I wrote a long reply to this yesterday and the forum lost it. SO I will try again today.
Look at what you just identifies are sources of a virus. None of them are email other than attachments and they are not really email either.
    Let me explain.
Links in email are opened in your browser, just as links from your desktop or links in a document that comes on a thumb drive is opened in a browser. So the issue with links is not "is my mail scanned?" the issue is "Is my anti virus up to protecting my browsing?" The is your call, but my personal opinion is that none of them are, but they mostly do a pretty good job. (chrome and Firefox browsers also use a Google bad locations list, so they are perhaps even safer)
Mail attachments move around the web as text. The original mail specification was for text, and subsequent enhancements that allow attachments have not changed that basic requirement. So when you add an attachment the file is converted to text (and grows about 60% in the process). When Thunderbird gets an email with an attachment it places a pane for attachments and puts a name in the pane, but the file really does not exist. it is this encoded text stream in the email body. Does it contains a virus? The only way to know is to convert this text back into a binary file.
Now your anti virus program intercepts the mail coming in (In some packages, not defender apparently), decodes the MIME attachment, scans the binary file and allows the mail to proceed (In theory) and Thunderbird stores this MIME encoded file as part of the email.
When you click on the attachment and select to open it. Thunderbird decodes the file into it's binary source. Thunderbird builds the file but can not open the file. It has no idea really what the file is or what to do with it other than write it to the temp folder and then ask the registered helper application to do something with it.
Now your anti virus program is scanning file changes, so writing this file to the temp folder will draw attention and a scan. Then the helper application (Say word) opens the file. It is only at this point that say a rogue macro in a doc file can execute, and the file has been scanned and word has warned you the file has macros, do you want them to run. Rogue macro execution is the result of stupidity or a truly blonde moment.
Even if the attachment is executable, is has been scanned upon creation in the temp folder.
Downloading from site on the web. Not as risky as we are lead to believe. Simply browsing the web is about as risky.
You download a program from the web. Your anti virus scans the data stream, it scans the file when it is written, you open the file to run it and your anti virus screams again.
Far more insidious are, DNS poisoning, Drive-by-downloads, where all you do is visit an infected site (which might be yahoo.com or Microsoft.com. Not likely, but possible) and those that find you, such a synoLocker http://www.anandtech.com/show/8337/synology-advises-users-of-synolocker-ransomware Of those three, DNS poisoning are not detected by anti virus, nor are attacks that target unprotected devices (No one has anti virus software running on their NAS) Most home users do not even know it is a fully fledged PC with an operating system.
    '''Outlook is a target.'''
Thunderbird largely mitigates attacks in the boyof an enail as it simply does not allow scripts in email to run. The result is Google maps buttons do not work and many logs email by routers will not expand, but nor can malware get a foothold as soon as you open the mail. Likewise flash does not run in email (it can in RSS feeds.)
Microsoft listened to their customers. They wanted convenient, they wanted simple and they wanted pretty. Unfortunately convenient and simple basically are diametrically opposed to security Outlook in the early part of this century, along with Outlook Express lead the field in convenient, simple and pretty. Unfortunately to allow that cursor that turned into a star for the grandchildren's birthday a script is needed. That + and _ button that expanded parts of the mail needed a script as well. this other bit used an OCX file ( A full blown windows program) so the user got what they wanted. and the spammers and malware writers had a field day. Open a mail from them and you got more contagions that a plague cemetery. Microsoft have spent a decade trying to back away from the Laissez-faire of the windows 95/2000 era but are still having trouble because their customers still want what they wanted in the first place. Simple and convenient. Recall the mess that was UAC in Vista. Microsoft were crucified. Unfortunately the reality was to little to later. But windows 7 came with less. They reduced security.
So yes Outlook was an is targeted particularly one because it was the market leader, there for you get more hits than on another target. But also because Microsoft Mail client will have the least security that Microsoft thing the Industry and customer will let them get away with.
The other reason security is low is internet Service providers. They set their mail in the same way, minimum security. Security means more support calls so greater operating costs.
I once asked in a consultants forum why all business email was not encrypted (S/Mime). The answers I got basically sum up as "'the average mail user in business is to stupid to use it" , and they had no intention of holding the hands of these people when every email they send failed. Their clients would not tolerate the added support costs.

  • Does Captivate 3 play well with Visual Source Safe?

I am using Captivate 3 at my company. Is it safe for two of us, both with licensed versions of Captivate 3, to check files into Visual Source Safe so we can each check them out to make changes? The subject matter experts (SMEs) want to be able to make changes to content. Our output is Flash/HTML.
    SAM

    Hi Sam
I don't mean to sound snarky here, but if you already knew the answer, why did you bother to ask?
VSS is something known as a Source Control system. This normally means you check SOURCE files in only. In Captivate, there is a single source file. That file is the .CP file.
The other files you referenced (.SWF / .HTM / etc.) wouldn't typically be added to VSS.
However, I am aware that some folks prefer to use VSS as a repository for their developers to also use when they build output. So in some cases I do understand that folks add their output files to Source Control. If this is the case for you, certainly you would want to include the output files.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Can I get an older release of Firefox? 36.0 does not play well with Windows 7.

Firefox 36.0.4 does not play well with Windows 7. If it opens at all, it freezes within a minute so the screen goes pale and I get the classic spinning circle of death. Then the header says (not responding).
Ideally I would like to drop back to version 32 or 33, but 34 and 35 had fewer problems.
Can I find older versions anywhere?

You can [[Install an older version of Firefox]] any time. But which will cause significant security risk. So If you can't use the latest version of Firefox, we recommend that you use the latest version of another browser.
If the latest version of Firefox is causing problems for you or you just don't like something about it, please give us feedback about it here:

    - Contact the manufacturer/go to their support site.
    - Sometimes this works
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music

  • Why won't iTunes 11 play well with my printer.

I made the mistake of downloading 11 before reading feedback.  I will not do that before 11.0.1.  Has anybody tried this update?  Have they brought the old search feature back...unless there is some way to set it back to the way it previously worked and I just haven't figured it out yet.
In addition to the loss of ease in manipulating and searching for my music, I'm having problems with iTunes communicating with my printer.
Is this unique or typical for the update?  It always played well with my printer before!
Since the 11 update, my laptop crashes while waiting to print or it prints with all items of the playlist printed on top of each other in a big sploch, rendering it unreadable.
    Any solutions???.

Oh, and I've reviewed these two articles and they're not applicable...

Whilst it's possible there's some obscure setting somewhere, I _really_ doubt it.
My Apple history dates back to a, then current, Mac+ and I currently do embedded [Android] fw development... so this is more of a bug report than flailing user.

Apple should make a server hardware/OS with iOS level security. This could compete well with the breach infested pre secure OS/hardware server systems like Windows Linux OSX.  It should be structurally immune to phishing etc and could be sold easily as a secure alternative.  It should be based on structural hardware based security as has been demonstrated in the iOS operating system and the hardware should be made in secure facilities in the US.  Those Chinese put weaknesses into the hardware they make as has been documented on 60 minutes.

Apple's entry in the server market has come and gone - is there a question in there somewhere?

Realize that people that aren't having problems tend not to "brag" that they're doing fine.  Those that are having problems are usually very vocal.  So a lot of the "bad reviews" may just be those that had a problem, not necessarily the real experience of the millions of people that are doing just fine.
...and I'm afraid to download it and my computer is 2009, yours runs smoothly?
I'm running Lion fine on my 2008 MBP (4,1. 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB) and late 2009 Mini (2.0GHz C2D, 8GB.)  Minimum RAM for Lion is 2GB, but IMHO you really want 4GB.  If you have a lot of apps open (or have demanding apps like Photoshop,) then get more RAM if you machine can handle it.
Also, make sure the rest of your apps or drivers are up to date before upgrading.  Incompatible drivers for things like printers and such are what I've found to cause a lot of stability problems.

    Hi Steve,
If this is dot mac or Mobile me you can still use IMAP eMail in the iCloud.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993

        •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

  • Asus DSL-N66U router settings IPTV

I've read a lot on here about settings for Multicast for other routers, problem I'm having is my router above running standard firmware doesn't have these same settings (no option to choose Microsoft routes etc), but is IPTV ready, I just can't figure out how to enable it to work. Anyone have the settings for this router?

In the 3rd Party Routers thread I did confirm this router works and confirmed the settings: https://community.bt.com/t5/YouView-Boxes/Multicast-Settings-for-3rd-Party-Routers-may-not-work/m-p/...
I strongly recommend you upgrade the firmware of the router if you haven't done so though.

Hello, I have a macbook and am going to purchase a wireless router. I've been looking at the belkin pre-n router and have read some great reviews, but none used a mac to test the router. So does anyone have experience with this router and if so, would you recommend it? (or does anyone recommend a different router?) Thanks.

Using a MacBook you would not gain any of the alleged benefits of using a pre-n router.
Performance wise, a MacBook would work just as well with any wifi certified 802.11g wireless router.
