Asus G73Jh overheating?

Recently my laptop, an Asus G73Jh, has started overheating I think. Whenever I'm playing a game, whether it's EVE, MW2 or the Witcher 2, my screen goes black, then it shutsdown after 5-10 minutes. The right side of my keyboard, presumably my graphics card, gets warmer as well. I've tried blowing it out with air duster to no avail. What can I do to fix this?

When you're talking about heating problems like that, there really isn't anything simple you can do. You can research your model online to see if this is a known issue, and see if a BIOS update or something fixes it, or buy a chill-mat to work around the problem.
However, if you really want it fixed, this type of issue really needs to be brought in to be looked at. Taken apart to see if a fan has gone bad, or what not.

Help!
I am currently running Photoshop CC on an Asus G73JH (i7 Q720 @ 1.60Ghz), 6 GB of Ram, Windows 7 Professional.
The video card is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870 (1GM dedicated VRAM).
The BIOS and vBIOS are both current.
The ATI driver is current: 8.683.0.0, dated 12/17/2009.
However, everytime I start Photoshop CC, I get the following message:
3D features require a minimum of 512MB of vRam. Photoshop has detected less than that on your system.

You gpu dirver is way out of date. You state The ATI driver is current: 8.683.0.0, dated 12/17/2009. You should be using catalyst 13.9 that came out about 3 months ago. Anything less than 13.4 would be trouble.
You need to get driver from ATI website, not MS.

ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 Warranty - is it Global?

Is the 1-year warranty on the ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 a global warranty or only valid at ASUS service centres in North America?
Is there a warranty card included in the box that specifically states it is a global warranty? No fine print that excludes global warranty service?

I would check Asus' website. MFGs rarely include any type of paperwork in PC packaging anymore these days. I would assume the warranty is not just valid in the US, but I know if that's the case, it will be different in every country it's applied in and often times there are different phone numbers to call.

Asus g73jh not suspending nor hibernating

I recently installed Arch on my Asus g73jh and it is not sleeping or hibernating, the fixes shown on the forums don't work for me. The darn thing just hangs when I click on sleep or hybernate. I migrated from Ubuntu so I'm pretty new to Arch. any help would be apreciated!!!

tryed aznech's fix but unbinding my own ehci_hcd and it didn't work back when i was on ubuntu... i thought hell let's give it a try on arch as well but as expected it didint work for me!!!

I don't think there is any way to tell. Heck, Asus refreshes their product lineups frequently enough that it may be discontinued and replaced with a different model by then.

I cannot re-install iTunes on my PC Asus G73Jh with Windows 7 Intégral

I tried much, I spent 2 hours by phone with the apple support, I completely followed recommendations from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=fr_FR.
The installation seems good, and at the end it says: Impossible to suppress the prior iTunes version.
My son, who has the same Asus model than me, has the same problem.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I bought an ASUS G73JH-RBBx05 I need help!

Everytime I play a game the laptop crashes to a screen with stripes on it or even when I'm not playing a game the laptop crashes to a black screeen!! I updated everything and it still does it! I just bought it on 12/23/2010!! Someone please help!

Sounds like faulty hardware or some bad video drivers. Try running the startup diagnostics through the BIOS if it has that feature or whatever diagnostic software ASUS installed on your machine.

What's a fair price for a used GX660R 060US?

Going by ebay, it has the Asus G73 from that same era with pretty much the same components. $600 there. I'd wager that around $500 give or take $50 depending on condition is pretty fair.

Notebook reliably locks up completely - cold restart required

I have a Fujitsu P7120 notebook. I bought it used several years ago and I love it, despite its age. It was very reliable and stable...but a bit slow. I decided to upgrade the stock 4400RPM drive with an SSD (http://www.kingspec.com/solid-state-dis … f-mlcj.htm), and that's where the problems started.
Honestly, I don't know if the problem is the SSD, but I never had this problem before.
Now, after powering up just fine, the notebook WILL freeze. I can't say when. Sometimes, it's just a few minutes. Sometimes hours. But always less than a day. It freezes hard. Only a complete cold restart will work.
It's VERY frustrating. The SSD is MUCH faster. It has given a new lease on life to this fanless wonder.
I've installed from scratch more than once, and did a complete fsck of the drive. None of it helps. Since this problem didn't exist before I installed the SSD, I suspect that this is the problem.
My install is a standard Arch install with X and OpenBox WM and Grub bootloader. I've read a bit about the new GPT partition table replacement. Might this help?

Just wanted to add onto this that I have the exact same problem. I've got Arch (well, ArchBang - I'll be doing a plain Arch install soon to see if that's somehow the problem) installed on an Asus G73JH. Wonderful machine, everything works like a dream, except for it hard locking every now and then. Now, this baby has a 600GB 7200RPM HDD in it, so this problem might not be strictly related to your SSD - unless the causes are completely separate and unrelated, which is always possible. I'll try to get some more detailed information up here when I have some more time, but right now it's crunch time, and I just wanted to post a quick "me too!" while I had time.

Two problems with SB X-Fi

Sorry I don't really quite understand what you are trying to say. But you can try the following method to determine if there is something wrong with the X-Fi Surround 5..
1. Disconnect your speakers system, then connect a pair of earphones to the front, rear, c/sub ports.You can use a Y-Splitter for the Left & Right RCA connectors so that you can connect the earphones.
2. Play a music file and listen for any squeaking noise.
3. Repeat this for the rear and c/sub ports.
If you think there is anything wrong with the usb sound card, please feel free to write to our customer support.

AVCHD + iMovie, best tactics for home movies

Hey all. Thanks ahead of time for your help. Even after a decent amount of research, I'm having a hard time figuring out some of this.
I have a late-2008 13" MBP (2.4GHz ic2d), iMovie 08, a Canon Vixia HF20. My previous camera (mini-DV tape Panasonic) imported into iMovie a consistent 6.86 MB / second at 29.97 FPS and 853x480. I guess we're spoiled by the small amount of hard drive space this uses up, since we have several years of footage (unedited) on my MBP.
My daughters like to look through the unedited footage in iMovie (as a player), so it has become kind of like iTunes for our video files. Plus, who knows when we'll have the time to do editing - i.e., no time soon, if ever.
So, we're just looking for a way to continue the trend with our new Canon HF 20 camera, a gift from the grandparents. (Yes I hear you laughing knowing what is coming...)
The HD clips are super small on the actual camera, but bloat up once iMovie imports them into AIC. I've read up on this already, so I understand why now. But obviously we don't have the internal HD space to store unedited HD video with huge AIC file sizes.
I tried downloading the VLC program that was suppose to play the MTS files, but it didn't work (probably because I didn't copy over the whole folder tree/stream files from the camera, I'm guessing). Is that my best bet to keeping the file sizes down?
I've been reading up on programs that convert the AVCHD format to MP4 and DV so that iMovie can read them (the conversion process takes forever). I guess I don't understand the benefit of this. If my iMovie already can import them into AIC, why would I need a 3rd party conversion program?
Or more specifically, does using a converter program to take AVCHD to MP4 retain full HD quality but reduce file size? How about to DV format?
I'm not wild about the idea of taking 12x the clip length to convert the AVCHD files into MP4, but if that will be a one-time "suck it up" process, and we'll ultimately have small file sizes (yet full HD quality), I can see the value there.
We're not tied to using iMovie (we don't even edit really, we're just using it as a player/organizer right now). *So I guess our goal is to keep file sizes down so we can (ideally) have all our unedited video on my MBP for view-any-time fun... all the while retaining HD quality if we ever (way in the future) want to edit it.*

I do have an ASUS G73JH (i7-720QM, Win7), and I read AVCHD is native to Win7, but I'd really like to avoid using the PC for the videos.

Thank you so much for responding. But my questions aren't really about archiving the raw AVCHD/MTS format (which I believe I can already do right now using Disk Utility or my PC).
The issue is that we still want to play/view the unedited HD files on the Mac, but need to keep the file sizes down (so AIC format is out of the question). I guess my questions can be summarized as follows:
*1) How can we simply view/play the raw AVCHD files on the Mac, while (a) keeping the file sizes down, and (b) maintaining the HD quality to do some editing in the (very) distant future?*
I tried the VLC Media Player program, but it didn't work (even with the entire folder tree from the camera).
*2) Does converting the AVCHD format into MP4 (or DV) result in a loss of video quality?*
My couple tests doing this (with AVCHD Converter program) took forever to do the conversion to MP4, but ended up with very small file sizes as well as file types that Mac could play. It was hard to tell, but it looked like the video quality went down. I have not tried converting to DV yet.
*3) If you are trying to retain the most video quality while keeping the file size as small as possible, is it better to convert AVCHD format to MP4 or DV?*
*4) Is the conversion from AVCHD to DV/MP4 quicker based on CPU?*
VoltaicHD, for example, says it takes 12 times as long as the original footage to convert the clip, but it didn't mention the CPU. If I did the conversion on my i7 quadcore PC, would it all go faster?

Laptop for Adobe CS5 Standard

I am in the sign industry and we are starting to get into the digital print aspect of it. I'm looking forward to using CS5 Standard for most of the work. I need a laptop to do this as I need to be able to work in multiple locations. I found an ASUS G73JH-B1. The specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Home Preminum (64-Bit)
Intel i7 740 Quad Core
17.3" Full HD Widescreed (1920x1080)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
1 TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive (500GB x 2) HDD

My question is, is it too much for CS5 Standard? I mean do I need something this powerful or can I get away with something like a Dual Core i5?

Then yes, that machine will be more than adequate as long has it has plenty of RAM. So would the i5.

Need video clips to "fall into place" using scale and position, but Premiere isn't cooperating...

Hey guys, I'm working on a project for a client where I need 50 video clips to "fall" from full screen to a "puzzle" in the background, then I have some after effects to do, but my problem is that I can't seem to get a video to play "underneath" another video. Any suggestions?

Yep they are, as each clip needs to continue to play for the full 30 second spot, so I think you're right I'm going to have to move the project to Ae and do some precomps. Premiere started doing some weird stuff with my video clips (After pre-render it would invert the image and shift them all to black and white) which I couldn't find a fix for, so its back to the drawing board as far as prepping them goes.
I think Ann is right, too. The client supplied all the clips, (1280x720 MTS, 60fps) some of which are an hour long, but I only need 30 seconds or less of each clip so it could also be a conforming issue, as a lot of these files are HUGE. I was hoping my machine could handle it (ASUS G73JH, intel 8-Core i7, ATI HD5870, 12 Gigs RAM, 2TB external swap drive/storage, 1TB Internal HD, 512MB SSD Internal swap drive) just because I'm basically lazy and didn't want to have to pre-render each clip, but now it looks like I'm going to have to. I was hoping there was some new sneaky way of only importing select edits of video clips with CS6, but it looks like its manual edit/export for all 50 of 'em.

I have purchased adobe photoshop cs3 long time before, I heard from one of friends, new photoshop cs4 and cs5 accelerates by graphics card gpu, so I am planing to purchase cs4 or cs5, but is it really uses graphics card gpu, or its not correct?

so from where can I get the 10.4 driver ( I can see the driver version is 8.683.0.0 and the driver date is 12/17/2009 ) ?

Photoshop cs5 64 bit is crashing

Hello, I have the trial version of cs5 and it installed succesfully without any problems. I went to the program files (x86) folder and opened it from there without a problem.
However, the 64 bit ver in the programs folder keeps crashing as it tires to initialize. How can I fix this?

I'm thinking perhaps the ATI 5870 10.6 drivers have a glitch with Photoshop and OpenGL.
There's a registry tweak to prevent Photoshop from trying to use the OpenGL system, which it will do by default unless it is disabled (or Photoshop itself disables it). The crash is probably preventing that disabling operation, and the following could help you isolate the problem to whether OpenGL is involved. Basically you're adding one DWORD registry value:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop\12.0]
"DisallowOpenGLWindows"=dword:00000001
If the above does allow you to start Photoshop, then you'll want to go into Photoshop's Edit - Preferences - Performance menu and disable OpenGL there, after which you can remove the above tweak via removal of the DWORD value.

As with any Windows registry edit, be extremely careful, and don't do it unless you feel comfortable with your abilities to recover from registry editing mistakes.
