Asus Laptop (G1, G2, G5, G70, G71) OLED display: Command line utility.

Greetings.
Yep. You did read the subject line properly. There is a new command line utility in town.
To be more exact, there are two small utilities that I have designed for this little OLED -display. (Links at the end of this post)
To anyone still in confusion, let me show you:
Some Asus laptops comes with this neat little status display, but few softwares around to utilize them.
Specially when it comes to the Linux operating system.
What I've made here, is a simple and easy to use command line utility that communicates with the display.
But it doesn't stay at "simple". It also has a few advanced features, which is described in detail in the README and their --help sections.
With this utility and a bunch of simple pixmap images, anyone can easily create messages, animations and transitions without the need of deep knowledge of the underlying system.
This makes it perfect for boot animations, event updates, status changes and alike.
Short video-demostration:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2i8Twa4h_iI
X11 Pixmap Format
To get starting, you need a set of pictures.
You should, and is encouraged to create these yourself, and if you do, please share your creations with us here. I will update a list of your creations in this post accordingly.
These utilities can, at the moment, only read xpm images. Most drawing programs can handle this today so hat shouldn't be a problem.
There is a preferred format, but other formats are possible:
*  Colordepth: 1 bit (Monocrome)
*  Height: 32 pixels
*  Width: 128 pixels (for G1 and G2) or 256 pixels (for G5, G70, G71 ...)
There are a few prepackaged XPM images that can be used any way you see fit.
GIMP is the tool I used to create the pictures and animations.
Installation.
To install: Read INSTALL. Keep in mind: 'bin' and 'conf' folder relies on eachother, so they should stay together. I plan to improve this, but that's another story.
Permissions: Again. Read the 'INSTALL' file. You need rw-access to two class nodes:
/sys/class/asus_oled/oled_1/picture
/sys/class/asus_oled/oled_1/enabled
Doesn't exist??? ... did you read the INSTALL and README?... aw... well.. here's a hint:
# modprobe asus_oled && ls -l /sys/class/asus_oled/
The module should already exist, and if you're running Arch Linux on that laptop with the default kernel, it's already loaded.
The modules comes with the Linux kernel itself (Staging area). Nothing else needed to be done. Isn't that awesome?
If you happen to run a custom kernel, reconfigure it and activate 'asus_oled' as a module. Recompile, install and eat icecream.
(Icecream part is very important)
Quickstart.
Once you created your awesome xpm image, you want it to live on the OLED display. This is the command:
$ asus_oled-ctl --static-picture My-Awesome-128x32-Pic.xpm
Explanation: '--static-picture' just simply converts and loads a picture onto the display and exits. Nothing fancy really.
You haven't created a picture yet? .... horrible drawing skills? ...
Well ... *sigh* ... Try one of the prepacked pictures then. 128x32_archlinux-logo1.xpm should suffice.
You find it under pictures/logos/
Success? Yay! Have some more icecream!
Next thing you might be interested in, is animations.
Animations is pretty much just a series of static images inserted one after another in a rapid manner.
So get to it and convert the whole Star Wars saga to a series of 128x32 monocrome XPM pictures...
... or just make a short animation of your liking... and SHARE IT!
Need a neat command to show your animation skills on the display? Here it is:
(NOTE: There's a bug that causes this utility to have serious trouble with spaces in paths and files. I'm aware of it. Just avoid spaces for now... )
$ asus_oled-ctl --cycle 50,10 path/to/my/awesome/animation/*
Explanation: '--cycle' cycles through all the pictures it's given. The argument '50,10' tells it to delay each frame 50 milliseconds, and loop through them 10 times.
If you instead wanted one loop instead of 10 and decrease the speed to 100 milliseconds per frame? Just change it accordingly:
$ asus_oled-ctl --cycle 100,1 path/to/my/awesome/animation/*
Still a bit confused on how the animations should be set up?
Have a look at the prepacked examples found under pictures/animations/
Hey! why not test one of the examples out:
$ asus_oled-ctl --cycle 50,10 pictures/animations/Arch-ripple_loop/*
Want it to be endless? Set the loop part to 0, and it will loop forever, or until you run out of power. (You can hit CTRL+C to interrupt)
$ asus_oled-ctl --cycle 50,0 pictures/animations/Arch-ripple_loop/*
You might have noticed it took a few seconds before the animation started from the point you hit [Enter]. (And that it took some CPU to do it)
It's because the utility have to convert the images to a more fitting format before it goes ahead.
Fortunately, there's a remedy to that delay. It's called cached slots. What it means is that one can tell the utility to store the converted animation data in a storage slot for later use.
Here's how to do it:
Step 1: Convert your awesome animation, and store it into a named cache-slot called 'MyAwesomeAnimation'.
$ asus_oled-ctl --generate-cache MyAwesomeAnimation path/to/my/awesome/animation/*
It will crunch your pictures for a few seconds, and then exit normally.
Wait.... WHAT??? ... You did convert Star Wars whole saga?... Wow!!!... That will take an eternity to crunch through... =O
Once it's done (Hopefully this site still lives when it is) we can now see what cache slots we have in the storage:
$ asus_oled-ctl --show-cache
There's your Star Wars saga... *erh*.. awesome animation. If you did a full install, you might notice a few other slots too. You can test em out if you'd like.
Now to play that cached animation:
$ asus_oled-ctl --cycle 50,5,MyAwesomeAnimation
Notice how the animation starts almost instantly this time. That's what cache is for.
Want to delete any of thos annoying and horrible slots?
$ asus_oled-ctl --delete-cache MyAwesomeAnimation
Now a few other commands to try out and discover what they do:
$ asus_oled-ctl --power off
$ asus_oled-ctl --power on
$ asus_oled-ctl --clear
$ asus_oled-ctl --static-picture pictures/devel/ASUS-logo_reversed.xpm
$ asus_oled-ctl --help
$ xpm2asus_oled pictures/logos/128x32_archlinux-logo1.xpm
$ xpm2asus_oled --output ansi pictures/logos/128x32_archlinux-logo1.xpm
$ xpm2asus_oled --help
I hope that I've introduced the utilities for you and awaken your interest in this otherwise useless little display with a neat ASUS-logo on it.
Now get on to it and create some awesome logos and animations for us all to use.
I will update this utility every now and then, and hopefully include some of your animations with the package.

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
    I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
    I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
    Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
    iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
    iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
                         when connected to the MacBook Pro.
    Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
    on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

    OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
    testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
    My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
    The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
    To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
    into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
    I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
    PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

  • I used to sync my ipad on an asus laptop, now I have a Mac mini and want to sync with it. Can I? Can things be transferred from laptop to Mac mini?

    I synced my ipad2 with an asus laptop. Now I have a Mac mini that I want to use for syncing and backup. But when I connected my ipad to the Mac mini it said something about the ipad being already synced to another computer and backup is permitted only one computer at a time. How can I transfer my backup to the Mac mini ? And delete my previous (I.e. asus laptop) iTunes backup system?

    You don't have to delete anything from the Asus. You can copy your iTunes library from the laptop to the Mac. Read this for more information.

  • Asus laptop will no longer connect wirelessly to HP printer

    My Asus laptop was connected to my HP PhotoSmart 7420 printer, wirelessly with no issues. In the last month, I upgraded my Comcast internet service to the fastest speed Comcast has available. In addition, I replaced my router ( Linksys Model: WRT1900AC) & range extender (NetGear Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender, 4-port Wi-Fi Adapter). Every WiFi related item in my home works much better with the exception of the printer. On my laptop, I removed the HP printer and asked the laptop to search for it to re-install; the laptop indicates "no printers available"? Even my desktop PC sends error messages indicating that the "scan to computer" feature no longer works when, in fact, it does work?
    Help!

    Hi @TSimo,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I wasn't able to find much on a Photosmart 7420, did you perhaps mean Photosmart 7520?
    If that is correct, this may just be a case of needing to reconnect the printer to the wireless network again due to the upgraded router and extender
    To do this, please restore the network defaults on the printer (press the wrench on the printer's touch screen, select Wireless, then select Restore Network Defaults, should be the last option) and once that completes go back to the same Wireless menu on the printer and run the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer. This will update the connection on the printer itself.
    After this completes you will need to remove the driver and re-add it on the computer. How this is done depends on the operating system, so if you're not sure how to remove the driver and re-add it, please let me know which operating system you use and I will get you some instructions
    Hope to hear from you soon!

  • Trying to install HP Download and Install Assistant on my ASUS laptop

    I'm trying to install the HP Download and Install Assistant, from the HP Support website, on my new ASUS laptop so that I can connect my HP Officejet 4500 printer to my computer. The application seems to download, but is hung up in the "installing" process. It has been running for over an hour without any resolution, saying it is still installing in the dialog window. I don't know how else to get my laptop to recognize and connect to this printer.

    Hi,
    What is your Officejet 4500 ? It must be G510something. You can download DIRECTLY, much quicker.

  • How do I share information between my Asus laptop and my Ipad?

    I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and I am trying to have information that I have saved on my Ipad for business to be automatically sent to my laptop and vice versa. Is that possible?

    What sort of information? Contacts can be shared to/from Outlook on the Asus to the iPad.
    For documents, use Dropbox or similar service. kindle app is available for both platforms and
    can keep reading material in sync (there may be other apps that do the same, but I use kindle
    so know that syncing occurs).
    If this does not cover what you are attempting, please post more details so someone may

    David.

    Paragraph breaks are good for readability. ;-)
    Have you noticed any difference between your MacBook and others at the Apple store? Wondering whether this is a configurable setting at the system level, i.e., DPI.
    You can default Firefox to a larger zoom level to avoid having to zoom every page. You'll still be able to adjust the size for individual sites as needed. It sounds as though you are aware of these add-ons:
    * Default FullZoom Level: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/
    * NoSquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/
    There are some discussions about changing coming in Firefox 22 (I think) to address higher density displays like the Retina display. So perhaps there will be a built-in setting to address this in the future.

  • How can I use the microphone on the iPhone 5 headphones with my ASUS Laptop?

    ASUS Vivobook X202E

    Headphone jack is both headphone and microphone jack
    How can I manage to use the microphone on my Apple iPhone 5 headphones with my ASUS laptop?
    When I plug in the headphones, only the headphones work, the microphone does nothing.
    Anyone find a solution.
    Thank you in advance for any and all help.

    I doubt that the Apple headset is compatible with your laptop. Apple devices have an extra "ring" in the plug and jack for connecting the control buttons. Your laptop does not recognize the extra contact.

  • Photoshop CS5 crashing constantly ASUS laptop Windows 8

    I installed CS5 on new ASUS laptop a few months ago, running Windows 8. It ran fine for a while and then started crashing Photoshop.
    Unexpectedly quit. Sometimes InDesign.
    The crashing has gotten increasingly worse to the point where I cannot use Photoshop for more than a few minutes,
    have to keep saving, saving, saving.
    Am uninstalling now but am wondering if there was something else I should have done?
    Perhaps Windows 8 only wants CS6? or CC? Up until now I have always been a mac person, so I'm out of my depth here.
    Thanks anybody.

    The first box implies your McAfee security software is faulting.  If you can, try disabling it and see if the problem is resolved.
    Over time I've read a lot about McAfee software that makes me think it should be removed and thrown away.  There are better anti-malware solutions available.

  • Possible to use DVD-RW drive from Asus laptop as external drive for S10?

    I just purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook, which of course does not have a built in DVDRW.  I have an older Asus laptop with a removeable DVD-RW drive.  Is it possible to get some sort of case to turn it into a USB external drive?

    the links that BaileyMoto posted will work for most laptop dvd/cd drives.  i've got one, and it works great with an nec drive in it.  only takes one cable for power and data, so you don't use up both ports on your computer.
    only the newer laptop cd/dvd drives are sata.  your old drive from your asus should work fine in that enclosure.  the first link is for the board that comes in the enclosure that's in the second link.

    Just wondering if someone can tell me if my asus laptop model #q500a can run after effects cc? Im using windows 8 64bit.

    If I'm not mistaken, these are the specs of your machine:
    3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3210M, 2.5GHz
    6GB RAM
    750GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
    15.6-Inch LED Screen, Intel HD 4000 Graphics
    Windows 8 (64-bit)
    That is just barely above the minimum requirements to even run AE. You will have to work pretty smart to run smoothly with AE. Make sure you don't have multiprocessing turned on, you don't have enough RAM for it at all.
    What are your memory and multiprocessing settings?
    You may not be able to RAM preview full HD on it. Just preview a frame at a time at full res if you must and use a half-res RAM preview for checking timing.
    Read this: optimizing for performance: Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects it might help.
    Or get a more powerful desktop instead.
