ASUS PB278Q with iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) using DisplayPort

Hi,
I bought a new display ASUS PB278Q (27-inch). So I can use my PC with a bigger screen and also extend my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) with it.
I'm using OSX 10.9.5
- Idea was to connect my PC to monitor using DualLink-DVI cable - which worked fine. %
- My iMac to monitor using Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable - after that display says -- DisplayPort - No signal --
Could it be that the cable is wrong? Or what can it be
I would really need some help.
Thank you and best regards.

Solved.
I bought better Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort -cable and then the resolution from iMac to ASUS PB278Q got the wanted 2560*1440.
Now I'm happy.
Resolution out from
- PC is 2560*1440 via DualLink DVI-cable
- iMac is 2560*1440 via Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort -cable and for both screens, iMac 27-inch and ASUS 27-inch
- Playstation 3 is 1920*1080 via HDMI-cable
What I learned.

  • How to upgrade my iMac 27-inch Mid 2010 for video editing?

Hi there, I have an iMac 27-inch, Mid 2010 1TB that I would like to upgrade to work well with film editing (using programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.)
    My System's specs:
    iMac 27 Inch Mid-2010
    - 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
    - 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    - ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
    - Last 4 Digits of the Serial Number is JDNP
I'm quite unfamiliar with upgrading an iMac and was hoping I could find some help here regarding what is possible to upgrade on my system?  I understand that installing RAM is quite easy, but is it possible to upgrade the Processor and Graphics Card?  And what about Installing a bigger hard drive or SSD?  Also, where do I take my iMac to get these upgrades?  Apple Store?  Hopefully I'm not sounding like a complete idiot here.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are not computer savvy and have never upgraded a computer before, then you need to see what Apple can do for you, but it maybe better to take your Mac to a third party Apple authorised reseller/repair center as they will be more likely to do actual modifications to your Mac. Apple stores tend to only stick with installing stock OEM Apple hardware.
The CPU cannot be replaced or upgraded or replaced as I believe it is soldered to the logic board.
The GPU maybe able to be upgraded, but the only other GPU option that it can be replaced with is the the 1 GB VRAM GPU version that was a GPU chip model available during the 2010 iMac model year.
This will be hard to locate and, probably, very expensive to purchase (at least $300 U.S.D..).
A third party Mac compatible SSD should be able to be installed, but will be expensive, too!
Get as large an SSD as you can afford to purchase and pay for the installation.
If you stick with a traditional hard drive, your Mac can take up to a 3 TB hard drive.
You CAN install additional RAM yourself. However your Mac year and model will only take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (http://www.macsales.com).

  • Automatically mount USB 3.0 WD External HDD with iMac 24-inch mid-2007

I am using a 2TB Western Digital (WD) My Book Essential external Hard Disk Drive for my iMac 24-inch mid-2007 to use it as a Time Machine backup disk. This HDD only comes with a USB 3.0 connection.
Function-wise, it works with the iMac and Time machine uses it for backup without any issues.
However, the following problem occurs at every restart: the HDD does not mount automatically. And Time Machine stops backuping. To make it work again, I have to either unplug/replug the power cable of the HDD or unplug/plug the USB cable of the HDD so it mounts again and can be used by Time Machine. When unmounted, I tried to see if the disk was at least visible in Disk Utility so I could mount it from there but it does not appear in Disk Utility until I physically unplug/plug it back again.
For troubleshooting purposes, I have tried to use this HDD with my MacBook Pro Retina 2013 and I don't have the same problem as the HDD mounts itself automatically when I restart.
So I assume the problem reside in the way the iMac mid-2007 handle USB 3.0 as it was probably manufactured before the USB 3.0 standard was developped.
Would anyone know a possible workaround for this issue? I don't have too many hopes but one never knows...

    I am using Mavericks 10.9.1.
The problem was also occuring when I was running Mountain Lion.
It looks backward compatible to me except when it comes to automatically mount itself after a restart.

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 using Mac OS X 10.8 Keyboard Issues.

    Good day ASC,
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8. It now has keyboard issues. Keys F4, 4, r, f, v, caps lock, space bar, and directional keys left and down do not work. I've been looking into the problem thinking it could be a software issue. Can anyone help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You need to install the Windows support software in Windows to make it run properly. You have to download and install these drivers in Windows > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
After installing them, I recommend you to look for a newer GPU driver

  • Issues with Macbook 13 inch (Mid 2010)

So I have been having issues with my Macbook. It has been going on for a week now.. Mostly Youtube is the issue. Some videos will work and some wont. I have updated all the software updates. Firefox, computer update, adobe flash, silverlight. ect. None semed to work. I also downloaded the new OS Mavericks software but since I have 2GB its going slower. My laptop is an older version as well. I have the 10.9.3 version right now. I went to the Apple store yesturday and it seemed fine there, but when I got back home it started again.  I kind of want to uninstall the new Mavericks but I'm afraid I will delete all my files and such. If anyone can throughly tell me how to do that, that would be greatly appreciated. Also before doing that I want to uninstall Firefox and I thought I did but when I pull it out of my trash everything is still there and doesnt ask me to intall. If anyone knows how to fix any or all of this please help me. I am not good with this techy stuff!!

The Genius bar or specialists there are on staff and on payroll
so they can suggest a course of action, and diagnose the slow
    action of the computer.
Take along your Snow Leopard 10.6 or maybe they can re-install
from their own tech discs the former version of 10.6 but without
your old Snow Leopard applications that came with the MacBook.
Since people here who answer inquiries are not Apple staff and
do not represent Apple Inc, it should be clear that some of us
who volunteer are owners and users of their product but are not
and do not have an affiliation with Apple. This is a user-to-user
discussion help forum; and you can ask as many questions as
you like & in different sections if you have different things to say.
Had you posted in the Mavericks 10.9 area, for example, and said
"How do I revert my Mavericks mid-2010 MacBook to Snow Leopard"
that would be front exposure to people who focus on or know more
about a new latest OS X than a MacBook series (2006 to 2010) era.
Did you re-install Adobe Flash player in your system, and get it to
work past Gatekeeper's watchful security? There is a way to do it.
Anyway, once you revert to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 you could then run
any older applications you had from that era, including some that
will not run in Mavericks or any system past Snow Leopard.
If you have the original grey-label install restore DVD set that came
with your MacBook, that would be the ideal way to revert the OS X.
An "erase and install" should do nicely if you don't want any of the
things you did in Mavericks to survive... Then update to 10.6.8 combo.
Then run Software Update again. Also, then get a Flash player for it.
    {You could ask a question directed to Carolyn, or others; I will ignore it.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Buzzing Noise from (IMAC 27-INCH,MID 2010)

I have noticed this buzzing noise (like crackling electricity of sorts) comign from the left side of the machine out of  the cooling vent.  I bought my IMAC in 2010 and have not had any problems with it until now.  I noticed the "noise" a couple of months back and it would show up here and there every once in a while, it was not annoying, so I let it be.  Until this last time, when the noise was loud and annoying, I could not just forget about it.  I am under warranty and called into Apple to see what can be done for this problem.  I was told to take it into my nearest Apple store to get it looked at, since over the phone they could not do anything about it.
I took it in May 11tt, 2012 and the guys at the Genius Bar were stumped?  They had no clue and it was the first time the two gentelmen that helped me heard of this kind of problem! Since there is no moving parts on that side of the computer they escalated the problem "query" to apple engineering and was told it would take a week for a response.  Thus far, I have not been updated on my problem or contacted as to the status of my problem.  Its been 12 days and will be contacting them to see whats up!
Will update if problem is resolved!
Has anyone had this type of problem??  Any advice would be apprciated!!  Thank you

This might seem a strange answer, but it has fixed this fault on my 27" two year old iMac (at least for a few days now, will be monitoring).
I had this very fault suddenly develop last week.   It was consistent, the noise increased with screen brightness, but was also present with the screen asleep.
I looked at every forum on the subject, became almost convinced my fans weren't controlling properly as well.
I decided it was the switched mode power supply, discussed repair options with my local Apple Store.
Checked the household mains voltage - I'm in the UK, it was slightly low at 236v AC, but thats acceptable.
    Then ....
We have a garden full of water features and LED lighting.
I just decided to check all our power junction boxes that supply power to various pumps and lighting.
I found one of the boxes full of water, with the Live, Neutral and Earth, and the 12v DC cables all under water and shorted together.   The terminals were all corroded and burnt.
Yet, I had no faults present in the garden, everything was running normally.   And the RCD breaker had not tripped.
I repaired the box, fitted new terminals and rewired the box.
And since I did that, my Mac has cured itself.
I've had it running for hours to get hot, no noise, gone completely.
And the mains voltage now measures 242v AC (should be a nominal 240).
The RCD did not trip because, with all the cables shorted in water, there would no out of balance condition to initiate a trip.
So, I can only assume that arcing or the short was causing some harmonics on our mains supply that was been picked up by the coils in the Mac power supply.
The 12v DC supply in the junction box was also supplied by a switched mode supply.   I dont understand why something didnt blow in the garden, but it didnt.
I'm monitoring the Mac as the solution just seems unrelated.
Oh, and I noticed our Intruder Alarm panel was humming loudly and now it isn't.
So, I would suggest anyone with this issue takes note of any unusual humming or buzzing in any other electrical item within the house, or outside.   It may indicate you have an issue elsewhere.
Even any loose mains plugs in equiment could be causing a slight arcing on the contacts, causing noise on the mains that may be getting picked up.
Coming from an interest in high-end analogue Hi-Fi, amplifiers always performed better with a dedicated, clean, mains supply, usually from a 40 amp rated cable fed direct from your electricity meter to supply your Hi-Fi.
The amplifiers would exhibit less noise and a cleaner sound with more detail.   And the transformers in the power supply were a lot quieter too.
And what do we have today - ethernet tranducers plugged into household sockets, superimposing high frequency signals onto the household wiring.
They would cause havoc with top-end amplifiers, I'm sure.
I hope this is the solution, saves me an expensive repair.
I've never had any problems with the six Macs I've owned in the last 12 years.

  • IMac (27-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8), PS CS6 extended student and teacher edition software???

Hi,   I have an i-mac 27" bought in 2010 OSX 10.6.8. Yesterday I couldn't open the software PS CS6 (extended student and teacher edition) anymore - that I have bought on May23, 2014 and dowloaded from internet. (I don't want a I-cloud version).
Please tell what to do. thanks
    Vanja

Your Mac should certainly be able to boot 64 bit. Just to test, restart and hold down the 6 and 4 keys. Then check the System Profiler to see if the 64-bit Kernel and Extensions says "Yes".
Yet, when I look in my Activity Monitor, I see Intel (64-bit) under "Kind" running for almost all the processes except for a couple.
That's normal. The kernel can boot 32 or 64 bit. But all 64 bit software, system or third party, can still run 64 bit under a 32 bit kernel.
Also, does enabling 64-bit mode have any effect on Rosetta?
    No.
Is there any disadvantage to running in 64-bit mode (ie: will certain things not work)?
Not really. The only real issue is drivers that must load during startup. If they're 32 bit only, they won't load if you start up to a 64 bit kernel. You would then be unable to use the device the driver is for.
Here's the configuration file approach for always booting into 64-bit. This is the best way to make your Mac always start up 64 bit as the only thing necessary is to alter one line of a configuration file. You can do that by opening the Terminal and entering (or copy the next line and paste in into Terminal):
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64'
To return to 32 bit mode, you would repeat the command but enter an empty string, which would just be the single quotes (where arch=x86_64 is in the above command) with nothing in between.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' ''
The forums wrap these commands to fit the box, but if you copy/paste it, they will be one line.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • Use 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for 2013 macbook air?

I would like to use my 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for my 2013 macbook air. I tried using Screen Recycle, however I would prefer more of a monitor situation than a side-by-side extra screen situation. Ideally with my wireless keyboard and mouse. Does anyone have any advice, or am I asking too much from apple? Thanks very much.

Yes. With an Ethernet cable and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
with a mini display to mini display cable. Attach it to the Thunderbolt port on your MBP and to the mini display port on your iMac.
    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. • IMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010) When booting gets stuck and spins. Won't load HELP! SOS!

Apologies to those wiser in dealing with this. I have Apple everything but am totally stumped with my iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010)  booting up and then not doing anything except sitting there with the apple symbol on a white screen with the grey mini-circular slashed like a clock little spinner going on and on and on. It seems to be freezing up  and locked somehow.
The last time it did boot... I was attempting to install Mavericks. Can anyone please possibly walk me through a few suggestions?
    Thank you very much!

Once you've booted into Recovery Mode, see if Disk Utility needs to repair the HD. From the four options choose Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD and click on Repair Disk. If anything gets changed click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Once done restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you're still having have a look at this link for suggestions:

  • Wi-fi connection does not auto connect on 21.5-inch mid 2010 imac help?

Wi-fi connection does not auto connect on 21.5-inch mid 2010 imac running OS X 10.8.3 (12D78) help?  My wife's imac with OS X 10.6.8  has no problem getting on wi-fi automatically as well as my Ipad 2 running iOS 6.1.2

If you get a green light then you did not do a factory reset - you must disconnect all wires and follow the instructions above - you will end up with the Extreme blinking yellow - then use the Airport utility to set up the Extreme - you can put in your own names for the network, device etc. - when it comes to the passwords you can use ones of your own choice - it is not asking for the old one - if it is then it was not reset completely - try to reset again if necessary - it may take more than one try - if it still asks for a password then use "public" - it is the default - once you have set it up with your new information, and you have a green light, test the connection with your computer - if you can access the internet then you are all set - then try to a use the Apple TV with the new password - if the computer still asks for a password, then it is asking for the computer password and not the extreme or network password - I can't help you with that - you would have to ask that question on the iMac discussion group.

  • How to update a MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 with SSD?

I know that this question probably been asked many times before, but i can't really find the answers to my specific questions.
I want to update my MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 / 2,66-GHz Intel Core i7-processor, 8 GB memory, running latest Mavericks version (full specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581?viewlocale=nl_NL) with a SSD (i think a 500GB) to speed up my MacBook Pro.
I have about 400GB of data, personal and work related (mostly design work) that is really important to me of course. I use 3 harddrives (one offsite) at the moment to backup everything using Time Machine which works great, because i always can fall back on it when i delete something accidentally.
The physical installation looks quite simple to do, but i have some questions about the entire procedure i hope someone can help me with:
Which SSD will fit in my Macbook Pro the best (specs)? What to look for?
And what about TRIM support to make SSD last longer, i heared that Apple default drives that come with the Mac will support TRIM, but what about any other SSDs on the market do support it and if so which ones?
There are different ways to do install SSD, but what is best procedure?
Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner or restore from Time Machine?
Clean install with Bootable USB flash drive with Mavericks and restore from Time Machine?
Buy a USB enclosure for SSD and Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner first and boot it to check and than install the drive?
Could anybody help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Krijn

Look here for the maximum memory for each MBP model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
The limit is given by the memory controller ("northbridge").
There are no thermal drawbacks expanding the memory to the maximum supported limit...
However, as explained, often Apple did specify an "official" maximum RAM amount which is in reality shorter than the real value, simply because, when the machine was launched, memory sticks of the proper size for giving maximum capacity were not available.
Apple never revises the specs after the launch...
But this did not happen in your case: the maximum memory for mid-2010 Core machines appears to be effectively just 8 Gb, form the page linked above...
Final remark: in my experience, the SSD counts much more than memory for speeding up a laptop! As you already have 8 Gb, there is little value to expand to 16Gb even if it was posisble. Better to invest the same money in a  larger SSD...
I expanded mine because it was equipped with just 4 Gb, and purchasing 16Gb Corsair was costing as 8 Gb Crucial. However, it was not a wise choice, those cheap Corsair memories were bad, the seller had to exchange both sticks...
If I could come back, it was better to spend more and buy Crucial memory sticks!

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris
