At a crawl again in Shetland

Yet again I find myself on here complaining about abysmal Broadband speeds in Shetland. Currently I'm getting 0.14Megs down and 0.07Megs up with a ping 789ms.
Absolutely appalling level of service. I'm paying good money for what exactly?

  • Custom Manage Property does not pick up the value from mapping crawl property

    Hi All,
I have created a custom list with the column name that's called "category".
Then I ran full crawl and I saw the "ows_category" crawl property is created.
Then I create the manage property names as "Category" and map with the "ows_category" and run the full crawl again. (Retrivable, Searchable, Refinable options are checked)
After full crawl, I searched Category:keyword but it returned 0 result.
But when I search keyword, that list item is retuned
I tried to debug with the spsearch2013 tool and there is no "Category" manage property in the return XML.
It seems the Manage Property does not pick up value from the crawl property. (Something might be wrong with the index schema)
    Do you have any suggestion?
Do I need to reset the index?
    Best Regards,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
When you search ‘category’ in crawled properties(Central Administration->Search Service Application->Search Schema), you will see ows_Category is mapped to DiscussionCategory, like the screenshot:
So, I suggest you create a new column using another name, then test again, compare the result.

  • Site could not be crawled and connect in server

I have multiple web applications/sites on this server/farm. I cannot crawl one site. I got the error message in the crawl log as below after performing the Full Crawl:
“This item could not be crawled because the repository did not respond within the specified timeout period. Try to crawl the repository at a later time, or increase the timeout value on the Proxy and Timeout page in search administration.
You might also want to crawl this repository during off-peak usage times.”
I have followed the suggestion on the web do the following
    (1)
Select the "Ignore SSL errors" on the Farm Search Administration page.
    (2)
No Proxy server. I did increase the Time-out to 120.
    (3)
Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings. Uncheck ‘Automatically detect settings’.
    (4)
    DisableLoopbackCheck in the registry
After the above changes, I still get the same problem.
Although the service account has full access to anything, I cannot connect this web site via IE from the server (while I can connect to other sites). The only different is SSL is applied to this site. I will appreciate if someone can help
    me out.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you get an error message in the crawl log  after performing the Full Crawl.
I recommend that you can try to check and test the following things in your environment.
      1.  The first investigation should be to check if you can login to the page via your Brower or with Telnet.
Open a Command Prompt and hit Telnet gokanx.wordpress.extranet:80. I received a “connection failed” on my black box. This was meaning that your couldn’t reach your site from your internal server.
    http://gokanx.wordpress.com/2013/06/19/how-to-bypass-the-firewall-tmg-and-proxy-during-a-content-crawl-in-sharepoint-publishing-farm/
      2.  Go to SharePoint 2013 Central Administration, click “Search Service Application” in “Manage service application”, click the “Index Reset” to reset all crawled content, then start Full Crawl again.
Opening IE with Search Service Account on Service and try to open the Sites to crawl.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0e1f7601-b4b3-446a-9eab-ed6c79faa8e2/sharepoint-search-crawl-not-working-this-item-could-not-be-crawled-because-the-repository-did-not?forum=sharepointadminprevious
      3.  In Command prompt run “netsh winhttp show proxy”. If you see there is a proxy server, which can be old or not working, we need to reset this setting.
Run the command “netsh winhttp reset proxy” to Reset the proxy and again do a Show command, you should get “No Proxy Server” screen.
In Order these are the steps.
      a. netsh winhttp show proxy
      b. netsh winhttp reset proxy
      c. Net stop Osearch
      d. Net start Osearch
You can also check if there are any Proxy Settings in IE Configuration, try to remove the Proxy Settings configured in the IE.

    http://sharepointmadeeasy.blogspot.com/2012/07/search-crawl-time-out-or-proxy-issue.html
      4.  Try to import the certificate to the Certificate store of the crawler (and the SharePoint Cert Store [Central Admin > Security > Manage Trust and upload the root certifcate of the repository])
    http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/58946/could-not-establish-trust-relationship-for-the-ssl-tls-secure-channel
      5.  Add the following rules to the proxy bypass list and reboot the servers.  To do this run command prompt as an admin and use the following command:
netsh winhttp set proxy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:portnumber bypass-list=”<local>,sharepoint”
    http://andrewroth1.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/sharepoint-2010-search-service-local-sharepoint-sites-cannot-be-crawled-error/
If this issue still exists, you can check the ULS log to find more information about this issue.
For SharePoint 2013, by default, ULS log is at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\LOGS.

  • When downloading or uploading a file, browsing slows to a crawl

Since upgrading to 10.5.5, whenever I'm downloading or uploading a file (via Firefox, Safari, Interarchy, iTunes or Unison - it makes no difference), my web browsing slows to a crawl. If I pause or stop the upload or download, browsing returns to normal speed. If I restart the upload or download, browsing slows to a crawl again.
By "slows to a crawl", I mean the browser will perform the DNS lookup, then hang on "Waiting for xxxx" or it will load some of the page, but not the style sheet, etc etc, and then time out.
I have run the DNSChanger Removal Tool and it didn't find anything.
    Anyone else having this experience?

Unfortunately, I have not found a solution for this problem yet.
But I did find out, that Safari only crashes, when I choose a "custom" location to save the file at. When I simply click on Download to "Safari Downloads", it keeps working perfectly.
So it seems to be a problem with the choosing of a file location.
Does this give anyone an idea what else I could try?

  • PSN downloads gone slow again?

Hi i was here last week when we had problems with the download speeds being poor and posted in the official thread we had going and after a few days it went back to my normal download of 40mbps but since last night they have gone to a crawl again. Is the problem back or is it just me this time?

The Downloads tab in the iTunes store app just shows you what downloads are happening/queued - if it's just showing the T's & C's link  then you haven't got anything currently being downloaded. Depending upon what country that you are in then you might be able to re-download your TV shows via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app (and your apps via the Purchased tab in the App Store app).

  • Internet connection suddenly slow for iMac but OK for iPad and iPod

A few days ago the  WIFI internet connection on my iMac suddenly became so slow as to be unusable. However my iPad and iPod Touch on the same network still connect as normal. I have tried everything I can think of together with some ideas posted on various forums, including the following:
Rebooting and reformating the router - a Netgear DG834G v2
Connecting the iMac to the router via ethernet cable
Trying different channels on the wireless network
Altering the physical position of the router
Using Disk Utility to repair the hard drive on the iMac
Using Disk Utility to repair permissions on the iMac
Disconnecting the two external hard drives (one used for Time Machine) in case they were affecting performance
Running anti-virus software on the iMac and deleting any infected files
    Disabling the anti-virus software
Deleting the network location on iMac and creating a new one
    Trying different DNS servers including 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220 and 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4
Removing Skype from the iMac - the application my daughter was using when the connection suddenly became slow
Trying to browse in both Safari and Firefox
    Resetting caches on the iMac
Rebooting the iMac after trying all the above
    Swearing at the computer
    Pulling my hair out!
None of these have made any difference. Sometimes when I reboot the iMac the first page I browse to loads reasonably quickly but then it immediately slows to a crawl again. The iPad is still connecting perfectly so I don't think it's an issue with the router.
The iMac is a 24-inch 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Running OS X 10.7.5
The hard drive has a capacity of 320 GB with 62 GB free.
I'm at my wits' end trying to sort this out and don't know what else to try.
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi BDAqua,
In Disk Utility the disk is listed as S.M.A.R.T. Verified and comes up with no errors when checked.
Activity Monitor: with no other applications open Activity Monitor itself is using the greatest percentage of the CPU at approx 3%. Opening Safari and trying to load a web page initially used about 20% but immediately dropped back to less than 1%.
Whilst trying to open the web page I noticed on the Network tab that the Data received/sec is generally between 0-20 bytes/sec, sometimes jumps to a couple of hundred bytes/sec and very occasionally peaks at about 1,000 bytes/sec. Data sent/sec is generally mirroring data received.
Free RAM is at 2.5 GB and free disk space is just short of 63 GB (out of a total capacity of 320GB).
In Console I am getting the following messages:
usbmuxd: AMDeviceConnect (thread 0x100781000): could not connect to lockdown port (62078) on device 6 - d81bda1a752c658f30b839f53ca2fdb6a55f4816: 0xe8000084

Thanks for your help. It's really appreciated. By the way, it's taking me forever to type all this on my iPad!

  • Still no solution to iPhone 5 Wifi....

    Good Day,
I purchased my iPhone 5 back in January.  I got it home, and immediately connected it to my Wi-Fi with no issues.  A few minutes later, I then received the push notification about the software update to 6.0.2 that was designed to correct Wi-Fi issues (I hadn't had any issues anyway, but did the update OTA via the Wi-Fi).  It updated fine, and nothing was wrong.  Mind you- I brought this home already in a case, and noticed no issues whatsoever.
About 2 weeks later, I woke up one morning and noticed that my connectivity was extremely slow, in an area of the home where it previously had not been (and in all other places at home for that matter).  I attempted to isolate sources of interference, and eliminate them- that didn't help.  I did notice somewhat better reception when I removed the case, but not much.  Also, I was noticing that the Wi-Fi wasn't connecting as quickly when I returned home from being out and it defaulting to LTE, it also would drop the Wi-Fi from time to time and default to LTE when I was home.
I called Apple and have an open case with them.  The troubleshooting steps we took were:
    1) Reset Network Settings
    2) Forget/Re-join Network
    3) Restore the phone (incidentally this happened the day 6.1 was released, so the update took place during this process as well).
The problem appeared to be fixed, but I was fooled as the Wi-Fi would connect, and be OK for about 5 minutes, then slow to a crawl again.  It's affecting push notifications for mail, and also MMS/iMessages.
I got in touch with Netgear (the router manufacturer), as they have a support alert on their webpage that there are widespread Wi-Fi issues with iOS6, and that they are trying to come up with a workaround.  After a few emails back and forth, making some pretty technical adjustments to the router settings, it still really didn't help.
I am now on update 6.1.2 (released yesterday), and I still have the Wi-Fi problem.   Apple has said I'm eligible to replace the phone, but I really don't think that will help, since it was widely accepted/reported by them that this was an iOS issue in the first place (although they seem to have completely stifled that discussion now), and other users that have replaced their devices are still having the issue.
Is Verizon addressing this issue with Apple at all?  And what are they going to be doing about it?  I have friends that have the device on AT&T, and have the exact same issue with their Wi-Fi.
Fortunately, I have not seen a data usage leak, but I understand this was also a problem earlier with the device and iOS6.  I'd better not see that happen...
    Thanks

    Hi,
I experienced the same issues. I'm on my 3rd iPhone 5. My data did not leak out; it gushed out.  My first two bills were ridiculous.
VZW technical support walked me though updating my second iPhone. This update would allegedly fix the problem. I explained that I didn't purposely use the high amount of data attributed to my account. I was told then that the data had been "used."  They again acknowledged the problem, but stated it was related to the iPhone. When I said that I would take it up with Apple, I was told that Apple could not do anything. Simply put, VZW doesn't really care. I bumped my data plan up and up to compensate. Yet, I exceeded the usage of the highest plan! My previous usage was significantly lower. When the iPhone 5s arrives, I will terminate my contracts (Yes, I have two iPhones.) and switch to Sprint. It won't compensate me for the issue, but I'd be stupid to keep paying someone, who willfully takes advantage of me.
Simply, know that you are not alone.
    Cheers.

  • My system freezes during start-up "for first time" after running System Recovery.

    HP G62-227CL
    Win 7 (64 bit)
No error message, per se; just a frozen screen during reboot.
Months ago, my computer suddenly started glitching on me.  I shut down and tried a reboot.  The system froze on the boot screen with the flying colors.  Tried system recovery several times  but must have done something wrong because it would not run.  Resolved to buy a new hard drive and reinstall from recovery discs.  Delayed for no good reason until today, months later.
Before buying new hard drive, decided to run System Recovery again.  It worked!  I tried the option that deleted everything and restored to original factory settings and software.  Everything appeared to work like a charm: hard drive reformatted, software reinstalled, system prompted me for a reboot.  I did.  Windows started to start, "Setup preparting your computer for the first use" appears . . . and freezes.  For hours.  Hard drive indicator light is off.
BTW, made sure that the Wi-Fi button was on as I read about Recovery issues if it was off when the program ran.
Rebooted.  Hit F11.  Ran maintenance and checked hard drive for errors.  There are errors.  Unfortunately, the default setting of CHKDSK does not repair them.   Opted for a command prompt.  Rand CHKDSK again with "/f /r" option seen in other posts.  I'm too ignorant here to get the program to run properly, I guess.  I ran CHKDSK on both drive X and C.  No errors found . . . sort of.  I know they exist because the system will not boot up.  (Yes, I tried again.)  Back at command prompt, I tried to run CHKDSK on drive C again.  This time I received a message that I would first have to unmount (dismount?) the drive.  As I do not know what this means, I opted for "no" and have decided to post this message for assistance.
So.  Suggestions on what I do next?  More specifically: how do I get CHKDSK to repair the errors it found?  I believe the message was: "Errors in $130 of sector . . ."  It displays this message twice at 62% completion.  Freezes for a long time.  Gets going again only to slow to a crawl again around 70% but for not as long.  Then returns back to the start screen of System Recovery.
Ran System Recovery again for kicks.  Again, appeared to work like a charm.  Unfortunately, the laptop is once again sitting frozen on the "Preparing . . . for first use" screen again.  It is getting hotter the longer it sits.  The fan is now audibly running at higher rpms . . . if any of that helps.  I'm shutting it down and waiting for your advice.
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Hello Miles1966.  I understand you're experiencing some issues with your notebook freezing.
This does sound like a hard drive problem.  The freezes, missing HDD indicator light, and inability to perform a recovery are all symptoms of a failing hard drive.  You had been using CHKDISK previously but have you tried running the diagnostic which is built into the BIOS?  Try following these steps and post the result of the diagnostic.  I suggest running the memory test as well just in case.
Let me know the result of these diagnostics.  I hope you have a great day!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"

  • After Effects CC 2014 RAM preferences and performance problem

I have a RAM issue with AE CC 2014.
Soon after updating, I began receiving errors that there was not enough RAM for other applications. I checked the preferences, and sure enough “RAM reserved for other applications:” was set to 0. I then changed it to 6G (out of 16) and restarted the application.
Upon checking the preferences again, the preference was set back to 0. I changed it back to 6, OKd it, then went back into preferences immediately to see if the change took and it did still say 6.
But every time I restart the application it chances itself back to 0!
So I did an experiment to see if AE CC (pre 2014) did the same thing. It’s preferences were set to 3G, so I changed it to 6G for continuity, restarted the application and it stayed at 6.
BUT THEN, I found that if I open AE CC 2014 it not only changes its own preference back to 0 but it changes AE CC back to 3!
In a nutshell AE CC 2014 will change the RAM preferences of both itself and AE CC when it launches, back to a prior RAM amount (default?). In the case of itself: 0G of RAM. In the case of AE CC: 3G of RAM.
Also another problem, which I assume for now is connected, AE CC 2014 will slow to an unusable crawl after about 5 minutes of using it. With no exaggeration, in only bounding box view mode, it would take 6-10 seconds to rotate a single solid a few degrees.
Restarting the application, which takes a good 7 minutes, gives about 5 more minutes of work before crawling again. I’ve changed cache disks as well as stopping to use a disk cache completely with no change.
Thank for any help you can provide!

    3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

After contacting tech support, it turned out to be a preferences permissions problem.
We made sure that in the preferences folder, the Adobe folder had each administrator listed, and each administrator name was set to 'Read & Write'. From there applied that info to 'all enclosed items' and it solved the problem.

  • Very slow 3G speeds with internal card on Vodafone network: solved!

I'm running the internal 3G card on the Vodafone network in Australia (ThinkPad x200s, Vista) and a couple of weeks ago it slowed right down to less than dialup speed for no reason, and the speed hasn't picked up since.
I finally figured out how to resolve the issue today. I downloaded the Vodafone Internet Connect utlility and now my Internet speeds are restored to 3G speed. However, if I use ThinkVantage Access Connections utility to connect to the Vodafone HSDPA network, the 3G speed crawls again. It appears this is a bug in Acess Connections utility and I'm not sure why it appeared (probably related to a Vista update).
Anyway, if you come across this issue, you should download and connect using the Vodafone Internet Connection utility, which contains many handy features including a usage meter and SMS features.

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.

I want to exclude indexing and searching of files under: file://localhost/c:/myDir/obsolete/
What is the exact format for the exclusion URL?
    I have tried both file://localhost/c:/myDir/obsolete/ and /myDir/obsolete/
but neither of it seems to work; it still indexes everything under /myDir/
Should I just put: /obsolete/ as the exclusion URL?
Also after initial crawling, if I change the inclusion and or exclusion rules and then run the crawler again, it should update the indexes accordingly. Is that right?
The version of UltraSearch I am using is 1.0.3.
Thanks for any help on this.

    Try "/c:/myDir/obsolete/"
Changing inclusion/exclusion rule does not affect files already crawled. It onyl
    affects next crawling behavior.
To do any DML to existing data set, use SQL directly on wk$url table under the instance owner.

  • Macbook pro 10.6.8 slow internet

Suddenly it is taking forever to load pages.  This is only happening with my computer (not the other 4 apple/mac devices in the house using other OS').
First, I have tried all suggested solutions related to IVP6 and here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3142362?start=15&tstart=0
I have also updated all firmware for modems and routers (Airport)
At first, changing IVP6 to off worked a little bit.  But the problem came back to stay.
I have checked to see if some host, etc. was leeching or using up a bunch of bandwidth and that's not the case.
Next I tried repairing all permissions on my computer using Onyx.  This works for roughly 30-120 minutes until it slows to a crawl again.  Checking the log, there are a large number of "Remote Management" and Java repairs.  This happens every time that I run the permissions repair, so I am assuming it is a reoccuring problem and part if not all of the problem here.
I have tried changing the "control channel" for the modem I have in the residential gateway configuriation.  This works, again only for about 30-120 minutes, then everything slows down again.
Given that I can get everything working perfectly for a short period of time, but then it slows again, I am thinking that it must be something that is aggregate having to do with Java.  I have read numerous other places online from people with 10.6.8 problems...it sure would be nice if Apple came up with a solution.
