AT commands for 17" Power Book G4 internal modem.
1. How does one issue AT commants to the internal modem in a 17" Power Mac G4?
2. Are they the "standard" AT commands promulgated by Ma Bell? If not could you point me to a list of AT commands used by the Power Book G4 internal modem?
3. Thanks!
You can modify the modem script you use to send additional AT commands to the modem. The Apple modem uses the basic Motorola command set. You can find the manual here.

Does anyone know if they carry the speck see thru covers for the power book
I'm just curious if anyone knows of anywhere that they have the speck see thru covers for the power book G4. I recently purchased one for my daughters macbook and it really looks cool. I figure that the answer is no because of the age of the power book, but it ever hurts to ask! I have searched on EBAY and came up with nothing!
If Speck ever did make Powerbook shells, they don't any more.

Fairly simple fix for dv6000 power button, microphone, internal speaker problems
I have a dv6000 notebook computer, S/N CNF6380XM1, P/N EZ829AV.
Over time (I've had the computer for almost 4 years) the power button, internal speakers, and microphone became increasingly flaky and eventually stopped working altogether. Classic signs of a bad connection. I could still turn on the computer by touching the QuickPlay button to the right of the power button.
I used the Maintenance and Service Guide, HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC, Document number 416618-003 (PDF can be found online from HP) to get the removal/replacement procedures for the switch cover (the piece of the case above the keyboard that has the power button, the Quick Play buttons, and the speakers) and the power button board. Remove three silver screws inside the battery compartment, pop loose some snaps along the top edge of the switch cover, and carefully fold the switch cover back over the keyboard. The power button board is pretty obvious other than knowing you need to slide the latch ears on the ZIF connector away from the connector body (towards the flex cable) in order to release the flat flex cable.
The power button board has flat flex cable that connects to the motherboard. In addition to having the power switch, this board is used as a breakout board for the microphone and the internal speakers. I looked at the contacts of the ZIF flat flex connector under a microscope and aha!, just as I suspected, they are gold plated. You might think this is a good thing, and it would be if the mating contacts on the flat flex cable were also gold plated. But alas they are tin plated. Gold + tin + vibration + time = bad connection. For those interested in the technical details of this, do a search for "fretting corrosion".
Since I'm pretty miserly and like to fix stuff, I decided to try simply cleaning the contacts. I cut a strip of carborundum paper (very fine abrasive coated paper) the same width as the flex cable, insert it into the ZIF connector, close the latch, and pull the paper out. I repeated this 3 times, then shot some compressed air into it to remove any gritty dust. I then rubbed the contacts of the flat flex cable with the carborundum paper and wiped them off with a clean static-free cloth.
After reassembly, everything is working again! Since this didn't address the root cause of the problem, it will probably eventually start acting up again, but maybe by that time I'll be ready for a new computer anyway. A proper fix would be to replace the ZIF connector with one that has tin contacts, and to replace the flat flex cable.
This is a design flaw on the power button board. A ZIF connector with tin contacts should have been used. Ironically, I learned about fretting corrosion over 20 years ago from an old HP reliability guru named Ed Aoki when I was an engineer in the HP medical electronics business.
After doing an internet search on "dv6000 power button", I saw that there seem to be quite a few frustrated people out there that are having similar problems with internal speakers and microphone. The troubleshooting flow chart in the service manual does not help to properly identify the problem component (the power button board and flat flex cable). Hopefully this info will be helpful. No, its too expensive for HP to plate the zif connectors with something that doesn't corrode....rolleyes.
Thanks nice tutorial.

i am moving to the uk from oz and was wondering do i have to replace the whole power cable for my mac book 15inch pro....or can i just replace the actual plug in the wall part ..if i can what is this called as when i look on line it just comes up with the complete power unit...it seems odd that you have to buy the whole unit again...thanks.matthew
All you need is a plug adaptor, if required. Apple sells an adapter kit:

power book not loading (error: unable to find driver for this platform) help
That usually happens when trying to install Mac software intended for Intel-powered Macs (made in 2006 through present) on a PowerPC mac like teh powerbook (made before 2006).
You post is a little cryptic, however. We may be of further help if you can tell us:
<> the PowerBook's processor type (G3 or G4) and the Mac OS version, both available by doing "About the Mac" from your Apple menu.
<> what program and its version your were trying to run and/or install. -
Need adobe flash for power book g4 OS X 10.5.8
need adobe flash for power book g4 OS X 10.5.8
I fould a hack that makes the sites think you have the latest (Intel) version of Flash installed. So I installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari. Here's the info.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

Firefox internal commands for some custom buttons
Hi there! I have been looking for Firefox Browser internal commands list with commentaries describing what each of the commands is for. I want to add some custom toolbar buttons, so I need appropriate code for them.
Particularly, I would like to learn the code (internal commands) for the following actions:
1. "Show All Download" in the Library / Ctrl+J Shortcut;
2. "Show All History" in the Library / Ctrl+Shift+H Shortcut.
I use this code for "Show All Bookmarks in the Library" custom toolbar button (Ctrl+Shift+B):
gBrowser.selectedTab = gBrowser.addTab("chrome://browser/content/places/places.xul"
Unfortunately, you can't just replace "places.xul" with "downloads.xul" or "history.hul", while "browser/content/history/history-panel.xul" opens History Panel in the Side Bar and "browser/content/downloads/downloadPanel.xul" won't work at all.See if this helps you.

Power Book vs. Mac Book Pro for Computer Science Student
I am a Computer Science Masters student that is looking into switching completely off of Windows machines in my home in the next 2 to 4 years. I’ve never used Macs before, but I’m tired of feeling like my hands are tied with Windows and I’ve been impressed with the G4 Power Books some of my peers have. I’ve actually been so impressed that I decided I want to start my switch from Windows to Mac with the purchase of a new Mac powered laptop for school.
I plan on using this laptop for the following tasks: writing papers, writing/compiling/debugging programs including an independent study project on OpenGL Computer Graphics, photo editing and some webpage design. Also some game playing and movie watching when I’m traveling.
So my question is this, do you think a 12" Power Book or a Mac Book Pro would serve me better? I am on a budget so if I get the MBP I wouldn’t have a lot of money left over after buying it for additional software, but if I purchase a PB I’m afraid it won’t be "up to snuff" or that the Power PC chip will stop being supported by future software. Are these fears unfounded? I do know there is a student discount and I’ve already taken that into account in regards to pricing.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me.
Jeremy
2800+ Athalon XP Windows XPI'm not a compsci student, but I think I can give you some insight on what to expect...
The G4 will handle a lot of what you throw at it, depending on how much RAM and how many things. I'm still running the stock 512MB and have found little-to-no need to upgrade at this time. I even went so far as to try a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM from my HP ZV6000 and it didn't change anything, so I'm good for now. Over the years, I've been impressed w/ the performance and efficiency with the G4 design and architecture, so I doubt there will be anything that it can't do based on what you're describing.
Gaming may be another story, although with the latest rev. of the 12" PB, I am impressed and mildly surprised at the performance w/ gaming. I play Call of Duty and Doom 3 on occasion and both run great. Just remember to put your processor performance on "Highest" as to turn off the processor throttling (much like Cool 'n' Quiet on AMD architecture). I played Doom 3 last night w/ medium quality @ 1024x768 and it ran quite well... Call of Duty will fly even on battery (ie. reduced processor speed) or AC... I've yet to try Call of Duty 2 but I hear it's going to be a monster w/ system requirements.
Writing Papers -- You can do this with anything...but if you're referring to the comfortable aspect, I think you'll love the keyboard personally. Typing on my big HP and on my 12" PB, it's night/day. The HP has a good keyboard, but it's not something I can 'fly' on...and by fly I mean 80-90WPM w/ little to no mistakes. I notice I make fewer mistakes on the PB keyboard because the keys seem to be 'grouped' together better and it's got a nice feel when you're slamming the keys down while you're in thought on a particular subject.
I also use Office X (or 10)...have had no need to upgrade since it works very well for what I do. I've never used Appleworks...
Future Software? -- Two words -- Universal Binaries...they will be around for many moons to come, and then some. Apple supported 68k for almost 11yrs (if I'm not mistaken) and software developers have already committed to Universal Binaries (aka. UB, or Fat Binaries) because of the sheer install base of PowerPC. The Intel transition will probably be in the 'teething' stage for another 2yrs before it's the standard Apple base across the board, and by then it will still only be a percentage of the PPC install base. Rest assured--your PPC Mac will be working long after you even upgrade (4-6yrs down the line).
The only thing I recommend is AppleCare, and not because I get anything from Apple over it. I've used it on my Rev. B (1.0Ghz) 12" PB and it paid for itself in the last year I had it. It covers everything that isn't accidental, so if you have issues w/ the LCD or Logic Board (aka. MLB), it'll pay for everything and shipping (both ways). It's also worldwide, so if you're on a trip to the UK and have problems w/ it, you can stop by any one of a handful of Apple Stores (Regent Street is awesome, I'm told) and they can fix it for you. There's also hundreds (if not thousands) of Apple Authorized Service Providers worldwide, and from what I'm told, they prefer Apple over many manufacturers because they are 'no hassle' when it comes to warranty claims. In other words, AppleCare may be the only investment that you may never use, but if you do, it'll pay for itself.
Computer Graphics, well, I don't do graphics but I can say that almost everything Adobe makes runs and runs well on Mac hardware.. I think you'll love the Quartz engine too...it's really quick compared to Direct X (I notice this in gaming, but what do I know...).
Good luck to you in whatever you decide... -

UPGARDING PROBLEMS!!! NO CD Drive on a Power Book Fire Wire
First Of All Hello Everyone:
Here's my problem, a friend of mine ask me for help with he's power book Fire-wire the machine has (768 MB on RAM and 15 GB on HD),To upgrade his OS 9.2 to OS X, but (Here's the real problem) it has no cd or dvd drive, (Actually no cd drive at all), so i can't upgrade it to OSX. I Have tried with an external Iomega CD Drive (Predator Model) but it tells me it can't startup with an external cd drive, or simply doesn't recognize the external device when tried to startup the computer with the "C" key held down.
(It recognize the external cd when it's already stated up in OS 9.2)Ikaro,
You cannot successfully drag-copy OSX like the 'Classic' OS.
If you could beg/borrow a FW CD-RW, you can boot the OSX CD and install via the burner.
Boot to the FW CD-RW in this manner: Load the OSX CD in the burner, then start up or restart while pressing the 'option' key, then select the OSX CD in the Startup Manager window.
Since you have a 10GB FW HD, you could connect it to another Mac (the host) that has FireWire ports and install OSX on the FW HD. The host should be able to start up to the new install on the FW HD so it can restart to the FW HD and finish up the install. If the host computer cannot boot to the FW HD, just let it restart to the internal HD, copy over CCC (see below), then properly unmount the FW HD. I believe you still should be able to boot the Pismo to the FW HD although I cannot be positive.
Now just connect the FW HD to your Powerbook (FireWire) a.k.a. Pismo, boot to the HD, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a bootable copy to the Pismo's internal HD.
You will first have to download Carbon Copy Cloner from VersionTracker and place it on the host's HD. After finishing installing OSX on the FW HD, drag-copy CCC onto the FW HD. When preparing to CCC to the Pismo's internal HD, make sure you select "make bootable" in CCC's preferences. -
Recording the voice on power book G4
I want to record me reading a book for someone who is blind. Any idea if I can do this on my power book and if so, how?
You can use garage band for that, but what is your PBG4 model, if you have the one that doesn't have internal microphone you might have to buy one (usb interface).
Be advised most microphone need pre-amp to amplified the signal to decent level for garage band or other software to record the sound signal.
Good Luck. -
hi,
my power book has started to run really slow.Opening or downloading aything seems to take forever.
My Details...
Any Ideas please?
TonyHi Allan,
Thanks for replying.
I have checked and can say that my hard drive is fine. It is a new laptop.
My specs are as follows,
OSX 10.6.8
2.66 GHz processor -Partioned, 50/50. The MAC 1/2 has 183.5 GB free
4 GB memory - 1.4GB Free.
I have recently installed some anti-virus software, could this be an issue. It is "KERPERSKY Anti Virus"
By the way My Safari also crashes. and I get this error report.
Could also be an issue or even the cause?

HT3910 I need a recovery disk for my Mac Book Pro for IOs 10.6 Snow lepoard
I have lost my revocry disk for my MAC Book Pro laptop. How can I obtain a new one
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You may also purchase replacements for the two discs that came with the computer.
