At sea trying to move photos from laptop to desktop

I have two copies of LR 1.41. The desktop runs Vista Home Premium SP1 and the laptop runs XP SP3.
Please, someone give me a straighforward way to move these files so that the edits show up in the desktop. I have tried exporting, exporting as a catalog (?), and some other things. (I cannot be the only photographer who uses a laptop in the field and a desktop at home and who does not want to burn numerous DVDs.) How can this simple task be done readily, please?

Hi Adrian,
You start off with one folder on one computer, and it contains files 1, 2, 3 etc. If you goto prefferences, you can set it so that LR carries the changes you've made to each file in a side car file which will be saved (by LR) alongside the original files. So you now have your files and sidecar files sitting along side each other in the same folder, ie 1, 1.xmp, 2, 2.xmp, 3, 3.xmp etc. When you want to use the other computer you simply copy over the folder onto the other computer and import them. If you then make any changes to the files, these changes will be held within the xmp side car files. If you then want to take these changes back to the original folder on the original computer, just select the xmp side car files and copy them into your original folder (overwriting the ones that were there). The trick then is to ensure that LR "sees" these changes - this you do by "synchronising" the folder, and telling it to "scan for meta data updates" (all in the synchronise folder dialog box).

  • How do I move photos from laptop to desktop WITH Lightroom Edits?

I have Lightroom on my laptop and on my desktop.
I've just done a big shoot with my camera tethered to Lightroom on my laptop, and applied some develop settings as the photos were imported.  I also did a little cropping and a few other adjustments when I stopped shooting for lunch.
Now, I'd like to move these photos with the edit history to my desktop machine because it's got the big guns for processing photos.
How do I do this?  There must be a way!
    Thanks so much!
    --Michael

In LR on the laptop, in the Library module select the photos you want to move.
    "Export as catalog".
On the desktop, in LR "import from catalog" using the exported catalog.
Or you could just import the whole laptop catalog depending on your needs.

  • Trying to move photos from ipod to computer

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to move photos from my ipod to my computer. I had to have my hard drive replaced last week. I was able to get my songs back onto my computer but I'm trying to figure out how to move my photos. Anyone know?
    Thanks--
    Susan

Susan, had you checked "Include Originals" in the iPod preferences via iTunes?
If not, you'll only have very small thumbnails on your iPod and there is no straightforward way to recover these. (You won't be satisfied with their quality anyway as they are really small, downscaled versions.)
Don't you have any other backup (CD/DVD, .Mac, external harddrive)?
If you did opt to include the original pictures on the iPod you'll stilll have to enable "Disc use" of you iPod to access the iPod's content via the Finder.
    Alexander.

How do I move photos from Ipad to desktop to free space on Ipad?

Use can use a cloud sync service like DropBox, you can use a WiFi transfer app (search the App Store - there are a number of them available) or you can connect the iPad to your computer and import the photos from the camera roll

  • How to move photos from laptop to ipad?

How can I move photo files from by laptop to my ipad?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Getting a strange error when trying to move photos from iphone to windows f

I hook up my iphone, windows recognizes it as a "camera device", and I am trying to move my photos from it into one of my desktop folders, and I keep getting an error!!!! ???

    And the error is?
Also have you tried to just browse to the phone from My Computer, locate phone as a camera and just drill down into the folders and copy off the images (or cut/paste)

  • Tried to move folder from dock to desktop, cloud then disappeared not in trash

tried to move a folder from the dock to the desktop, cloud then disappeared, not in trash

Do you have any idea where it is, or was? Wherever it was, it's still there -- unless you had already deleted it. Removing it from the Dock didn't delete it. If you did delete it, then you'll have to find it in your backups.

  • Error message when syncing photos from laptop

When trying to copie photos from laptop to ipad I get the following message :-Photoshoot was not copied to the ipod "sids ipod" because it could not be found

Although it's for iPhone and Touch, the following document is also worth a try on an iPad. (I'd check your photo cache first.)

  • How do i move photos from macbook pro to a freeagent drive?

I am trying to move photos from my Macbook Pro to an external FreeAgent hard drive, but it will not allow me to "drop and drag" or copy and paste to that drive. Any suggestions as to why, or how I can get these photos onto the external drive?

Are you able to move other file types, such as documents, to your external hard disk using your Mac?
If not, the hard disk may be formatted in a file system format known as "NTFS" which is used by Windows, which can not be written to by default using Mac OS X.
To resolve this issue, you can format the hard disk as either "FAT" (which will maintain compatibility with other operating systems such as Windows) or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" (if you are only using this hard disk using your Mac).
NOTE: Erasing and reformatting your external hard disk will remove any data that is currently stored on it. Ensure that you make a back up of any important data before proceeding.
To reformat the hard disk, open the Finder and from the menu bar choose "Go" and then click on "Utilities". Double click on Disk Utility to open it. Select your external hard disk from the list on the left hand side of the Disk Utility window, then click on the "Erase" tab on the right hand side of the window. Choose the appropriate file system format and give the volume a name (such as "Storage HD"). Then click on the Erase button.
Once Disk Utility has completed formatting your external hard disk, you should be able to copy your data to it.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Everytime I open my laptop, Lightroom tries to import photos from my hard drive. Does anyone know how to stop this?Is there a default I need to change?

Everytime I open my laptop, Lightroom opens and tries to import photos from my external drive. Is there a default I need to change?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Error -36 is, as X423424X says, a generic I/O error. It doesn't say anything about what caused the error, or indeed where it occurred (source or target).
You have to describe exactly your action when the error occurs. Is the ext'l drive you mentioned formatted as NTFS (Win default file system)? Without additional software, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS, it can only read from it.

  • I'm trying to move pictures from my PC to IPad and the directions say to click the ipad name which is on the left but mine appears on the right. Is this important?  I'm having trouble getting clear directions on how to move photos to ipad.

When I'm trying to sync photos from PC to Ipad the directions say to Launch I tunes  and an icon will appear on the left side. Mine appears on the right side. In general the directions for moving photos to Ipad from computer are vague.  Shoud I make a special folder on my PC for the pictures I want to move before I even start? How do I keep from losing pictures I synced the last time?

If you have iTunes 11 then you can enable the left-hand side bar via control-S on a PC. You should then be able to connect and select the iPad on that left-hand sidebar, and then use the Photos tab on the right-hand side to sync your photos to it.
Synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync - so if you want the currently synced photos to remain on the iPad then you will need to include their folders in the next sync. I created a separate folder on my computer with sub-folders underneath it with the photos that I want on the iPad - I can select that folder on the Photos tab in iTunes, and the sub-folders then get their own albums on the iPad (if you have folders underneath those sub-folders then their photos will be included in the sub-folder's album i.e. you can't have albums within albums).

  • I can't move photos from iPhoto to my secondary hard drive or to a burn folder.  I have never had a problem with this before.  This is something new.   They will not drop into either folder.  Nothing happens.

I can't move photos from iPhoto to my secondary hard drive or to a burn folder.  I have never had a problem with this before.  This is something new.   They will not drop into either folder.  Nothing happens.
I checked my secondary harddrive and there is plenty of memory.
I emptied my burn folder but the photos still will not drop into it.
I created a new burn folder, no luck with this either.
230 photos is the maximum size of the events I am trying to move from iPhoto to save elsewhere.
I have shut down and restarted my computer.   No change. The photos still will not drop out of iPhoto.
My Mac Computer Storage shows that I have 62.2GB free out of 249.2GB (movies, photos and contacts taking up the most space)
My Lacie External Harddrive (2TB capacity) shows that I have 1.79TB available.  It shows that 207,729,520,640 bytes (207.73 GB on disk) are used.
I have never had this problem before.  It is usually very easy to move my photos from iPhoto.
I am not a computer expert (I work in surgery so don't have a need for lots of computer knowledge) so please explain in simple terms.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
    I really appreciate it.

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.
