AT&T upgrade jargon, if anyone knows (for iPhone 6)

I have an iPhone 5C, which has served me pretty faithfully for the time that I've had it. Sadly, over the weekend it was dropped onto a hard floor and broke. (It had been in a case, which I had removed for cleaning...of course.) The screen is intact but full of flashing lines instead of being visible. Also the light on the back won't turn off. I've got a picture of what it's doing now if anyone is interested. I'd like to get an iPhone 6, if possible, since iOS 8 seems to be rather creaky on the iPhone 5C.
My phone is on my parents' plan, so my mother told me to check if an upgrade is available. I went to AT&T's site, and this is what it told me:
"Congratulations! This line is eligible for an AT&T NEXT installment plan upgrade. Or upgrade with a 2-year service agreement and a $40 upgrade."
Forgive me, but I have no idea what this means. I mean, I do, but I don't trust AT&T any farther than I can throw them, and my inherently suspicious  nature makes me suspect that they're not being entirely honest, i.e., they're trying to bait me in by making me think an upgrade would be free or just a one-time $40 payment. What follows is a list of several phones listing how much they would cost a month.
What's the difference between an "installment plan upgrade" and a "2-year service agreement" costing $40? I figure that what AT&T is trying to sell me is a new phone with a two-year contract on top of the one my family already has.
Again, forgive my ignorance if I am way off, but I'd just like to understand what my options are before I march into the AT&T store to get a new phone. Of course, if anyone thinks that it might be cheaper to take the phone to the Apple Store to have it repaired, tell me. The internal workings seem to be alright, as I plugged it into my MacBook Pro to back it up. This is the state it's in now:

iPhone 5C out of warranty replacement is $269.
Or upgrade with a 2-year service agreement and a $40 upgrade."
This simply puts you into a 2 year extension of you current AT&T contract.
You get to pay $199 for a new iPhone in addition to the $40 fee from AT&T is the “upgrade/activation” fee (it’s simply extra $$ they can get from consumer).
Just tell them you do not want to pay it or want it refunded. They can easily do this.
This line is eligible for an AT&T NEXT installment plan upgrade.
The “installment plan upgrade" (aka the NEXT plan) is you simply purchase a new phone at full price and the payments are spread out over 20 or 24 months.
You are not stuck on a 2 year contract. In addition, your service is usually $25 less per month (but you pay an extra +$25 for the phone).
Either way, you are paying the same full price for the phone (whether it is directly for the phone or extra $$ on the 2 year contract).

    HP couldn't find its own apps with both hands and a flashlight.
    As of Lion all scanning functions are incorporated natively in OS X. You can scan three ways:
    Use Preview: File > Import from scanner
    Use Image Capture
    (Preview and Image Capture are both in your Applications folder.)
    System Preferences > Print & Scan. Select your HP and use the Scan tab.
    If you have HP's "Image Zone" software installed, you no longer need it and it no longer works anyway.

    Apple hasn't announced a specific date.  Anything that you might find indicating a release date is speculation.  The good thing is that, since Lion is a download, it will be available immediately after it is announced (providing Apple's servers can handle the demand).

  • I recently purchased a new macbook and am having trouble syncing my iPhone with the iTunes. It won't allow me to delete any of the music on my phone, so I am unable to make room for the new software upgrade. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Does anyone know how to enable editing on a new computer? I only have an 8gb phone and over 4gbs of music, half of which I don't even listen to anymore. I really want it off my phone, but when I plugged it into my new macbook nothing would delete. My old computer barely turns on so I can't even plug it into the old one to delete anything. I hit the sync button on the new computer and that didn't help either. I'd really like to upgrade to the new software but don't have the room on my phone until this music/a few apps are deleted.     Here are two screen shots to show you what I am seeing.  The first screen shot shows it allowing me to select (highlighted in blue) my admin user (which is what I am locced in as).  The second screen shot shows it allowing me to select the "Guest" user (highlighted in blue).  However when I click on the user "Orion" nothing happens.  It will not change to highlight that user.

The low-end Palm Z22 will be fine for my needs, but I must be able to sync with Outlook as that's what I must use for work. Does anyone know if I would be able to do this?     I don't know for sure, if you have not seen this, you may want to look at it. All sorts of great conduits for palm and various mail apps. The developer is a nice fellow and helped me with a conduit for my Visor and mail app.

    I just drop my iPhone 5s (not much, though) let´s say 3,5 feet.. It looks normal, but I thought that maybe the damages might be internal.. Does anyone know if this model is internally resistant to drops or hits? thank you

    Any device can be susceptible to damage, if it hits hard enough. Part of it is the amount of protection the device has, part of it is the force of the strike, and part of it's just random or individual.
    If you're prone to dropping your device, I would recommend investing in a protective case. As for internal damage now, you won't know until symptoms begin presenting themselves.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

  • I haven't seen anything from Apple on the Maps App being only in Chinese after iOS5 upgrade. Does anyone know anything?

    This issue is all over the forums, and google claims they are addressing it with Apple, the developer of the Google Maps app.  However, still nothing has been done, the thousands of users that depend on this app to get around in China are desparate, and we hear nothing from Apple.
    Can anyone at Apple comment on this problem, or does anyone else know anything?

  • Is it better to download and upgrade iOSes through Macs' iTunes for iPhones?

    Or do it through iPhone's Internet? I assume back ups/synchronizations are done automatically during the iOS upgrades on a computer.

  • Bright burst of flash of light and the screen is crashing does anyone know of this problem this problem?

    When I switch between apps, when I switch between photos and when I sign into the phone after the LockCode entryI get a bright burst of light like an old-fashioned lightbulb flash between the apps and also when I turn on the iPhone the light burst is seen again after I enter the LockCode. My screens are now crashing if I'm working on a word document if I'm looking at a photo or whatever I'm doing it's like the screen just kicks me out and I have to restart the app or the project again. I have an iPhone 5.  These issues just started yesterday after I did the new upgrade for the iPhone. Has anyone heard of these problems before having to do with the new upgrade? Does anyone know how to resolve these issues or do they know if Apple is currently working on a fix them? Any information concerning his problems would be appreciated.

    Somehow the iPod started the Assorized test and it is completed. Most likely due to a bad and dying battery which need to be replaced.
    To get out of the screen, Just Reset the iPod - Press Menu and Center Button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON.
    The diagnostic might trigger again, until you get  the iPod overhauled by Apple or 3rd party vendors.
