AT&T vs Verizon Data Plan for iPad 2 - Activation Fees?

I heard that Verizon has a $35 activation fee everytime you activate the data plan. Is this true?
I am trying to get one where I can activate on a month-to-month basis as I please without paying an activation fee each time. I know that this is the case for AT&T. If Verizon has the activation fee, then this is an easy decision.
Thanks!

For what it's worth i went to vzw.com/ipad2 and clicked the link "Check out Our Data Plans" and there is no mention of activation fees.
This leads me to believe that the activation fee is for the MiFi unit because it has a phone number assigned to it.

I think the Verizon website is misleading. There is no mention of activation fees, but according to almost every reputable source the fee exists.
I wrote to Verizon customer service earlier in the week to find out from the source. I asked:
"IF I purchase the Verizon 3G iPad2:
1. Will I be able to activate/deactivate Verizon service as needed?
2. Is there an activation fee? If so, how much?
3. Is the activation fee charged each time service is activated and/or
deactivated? If not, when exactly is the fee charged?"
They answered:
"You may disconnect the device at anytime. However, if the disconnect is after the 14-day Worry Free Guarantee return/exchange timeframe, then you are liable for an early termination fee. The early termination fee is prorated based on how much of the contract has been completed.
Yes, there is an activation fee for all new lines of service. In your case, the activation fee would be $35. This applies each time that a line activation is requested."
That reads to me as a $35 fee every time you activate service, be it every other month, every three months or whatever.
It may not be a problem for some, but this is a dealbreaker for me. I am getting the AT&T iPad2. It is unfortunate that one iPad cannot handle both services, as that would promote competition.

  • IPad Air 2 comes with Apple SIM.  I have a Verizon data plan for my iPhone.  Does Apple sell Verizon SIMS or do I need to buy a SIM directly from Verizon?

iPad Air comes equipped with an Apple SIM.  Apple SIMs do not recognize Verizon (only ATT, T-Mobile, and Sprint).  Does Apple sell Verizon SIMS or do I have to purchase a new SIM directly from Verizon?

I guess I'll be returning to the Apple store to ask for a Verizon SIM because they did not give it to me when I purchased the iPad Air2 (I told them I had a Verizon data plan). Thanks.

  • What happens if I don't use my Verizon data plan for my iPad 2 for a lengthy period?

    I have a 64GB iPad 2 +3G. I have a Verizon data plan. $20 for 1GB a month.
What if I cancel the automatic renewal for more than 60 days? Will that permanently disable my 3G capability on the iPad? Or will I be allowed to resume service when I am ready? Thanks!

Depends on your contract if any, you will resume service when you are ready, but give your service provider a call will be the best.

Check with your wireless carrier to see if they offer a MiFi device.

  • Manage Verizon data plan on iPad

Just got a Verizon 4G iPad. I go into the Settings > Cellular Data > View Account and a window pops up telling me that "The SIM Card inserted in this device is already active on a subscription that connot be managed on this device."
I thought that the data plan was supposed to be manageable from the device.
I first called the Verizon customer care number given in the window. The first person said I had some kind of two year contract and passed me off to a different person. The second person said I did not have a contract, but that I needed to set up My Verzion account on the website. But that still didn't work. So I went back to the Verizon store and they said I had to download the My Verizon App.
I'm pretty sure they are all wrong and that I should be able to manage my account directly through the iPad. Isn't that correct?

I know it is old, hence the "isn't/wasn't" true. However I would think that if there were crazy rumors about this with the introduction of the iPad2 it is likely the same junk is still going around. Additionally I do not see any thing in the article referencing whether the month-to-month is pre or post paid. Just that it is no contract required.
In any event, what I wanted was the ability to manage my plan from my iPad — something touted by Apple and even built into the Settings. And it seems that there couldn't possibly be a $35 fee for reuping a $30 montly service, as Pouge said, "That seemed so user-hostile, so outrageous,.."
Here is what I have found out from my hour at the VZ store.
4G iPads sold through a VZ store must be activated in store and signed up for a plan — either pre- or post-paid. Neither requires a contract of any sort.
There will be a $35 service charge either way.
There is no service charge for using the on-device account activation.
Oddly enough it seems that you must have wifi to activiate the account. Which seems strange to me.
Of course I got home and tried to use wifi to acivate my account. And now I've got "Invalid Sim card."

  • Separate Data Plans for iPad and iPhone?

If you have both devices, do they each require their own data plan, or can the data usage be shared?

The iPad required a mifi or wifi hotspot to connect to internet through VZW. The iPhone's data package would only be available for the iPhone alone. The iPad 2 will likely require a Mobile Broadband plan.

  • IPad Verizon data plan used up?

After using a new iPad mini on a Verizon data plan for 3 weeks, only 50 MB had been used. Then the device suddenly indicated that all data was used for the month, and refused to connect. A few hours after this, it "fixed itself", connecting, and showing that only 50 MB had been used for the month.
    Is this a common occurrence?

I've never seen this happen on my Verizon iPad. I've been using it since July 2011 on my account.
ID suggest watching your usage though to see if it happens again. If it does I'd contact Verizon.

  • How do I get a data plan for my iPad in Paris?

I'm travelling to Paris at the end of the month and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the names of carriers that sell SIM card data plans for iPads, and if there are any special things to be aware of.

I know with a new iPad it is usually a simple matter to use the Settings app on the iPad.
Settings > Cellular Data > there's a link to set up your account.
If it doesn't show call your carrier and ask to set up an account there.
If you want to have your iPad share an account with your cell phone call your carrier.

  • Can't sign up for 1GB $20 Verizon Data Plan on the Ipad

I have a 32GB Verizon iPad2.  I have tried repeatedly to sign up for the 1 GB $20.00 Verizon Data Plan but when I click on the Next button after filling out all of the account information (including selecting the 1GB level plan) a summary account screen flashes that shows that I have selected the 10GB $80 plan!!  Then in about 2 seconds that screen disappears and the terms and conditions screen appears with the options to Back or I Agree, or Cancel the screen altogether.  So I either Back or Cancel.  I have called Verizon--they have no idea.  Called Apple and they had me set up a Genius Appt.  Anyone else having this problem?  Just received the iPad this past Tuesday.

Well now I have 3G service.  This is what I did since I posted this question.  I got iPad2 the Missing Manual and started reading it.  It very clearly said that after you fill in the account information, you get the terms/conditions screen and then you get a summary of the account and a chance to change it before you finally agree.  So I decided to do it again, and this time ignore the screen that says I want the $80.00 plan.  And yes, it then took me to the account summary page and there was the 20.00 plan and 1 GB!  Yeh!!  I have just tried it and it works and I then shut it down brought it back in the house and it is now on the WiFi.  Go figure what that flashing page is doing!

  • Why won't verizon sell me an international data plan for my new iPad?

Why won't verizon sell me an international data plan for my new iPad?

Thanks for your response Meg. Verizon is definitely not customer friendly.  I do have the monthly prepaid domestic data service that I subscribed to from my iPad when I bought it a few months ago.  They didn't advise me of any other available plans at the time.  You are correct that they are now saying that in order to get an international plan I need to cancel my current monthly plan through one Verizon department (and abandon any remaining data mb) and then subscribe to a contract plan (handled by a different verizon department).  But here's the catch: in order to get international service I need to be a contract customer for six months (which doesn't help me as I am going to Europe next week).  Of course, if I had bought an ATT iPad I wouldn't be shut out like this since their monthly international plans are readily available through the iPad at any time.  I feel that Apple and Verizon should not have touted the new Verizon iPad as comparable to ATT's internationally (which they did) without fully disclosing the hoops one has to jump through.

  • HT4157 I want to set up my data plan for my iPad however I am in Germany for the next 3 months.  Will this plan work the same here as it would in the US?  Is there anything I would need to do in addition to get the service I need out here?

I just moved to Germany and want to set up the data plan for my iPad.  I currently have the iPad linked to at&t however have not yet set up service.  I am afraid that I will pay for it and not be able to use it out here.  Will the standard at&t cellular data plan work in Germany or am I out of luck??

but not an AT&T  as clearly stated by OP ( unless you can use a Verizon/Sprint model on AT&T )
Looks like we both need to read the OP more carefully

I understand I will still be getting 3 gigs of data for the $50, I would just like to continue to have the free 1 gig promotion I was already getting, if you Verizon was willing to do it before then why can't they continue to do it now?

Like Ann154 said, changing plans often results in the loss of any promos you may have.  In your case, it makes no difference to the price you will pay - you'll have 3 GB for $50.  Whether you have 1GB free, or a better price on the 3GB plan is a wash.  I'd leave things alone....

  • About to buy ipad2, Verizon aircard is already built in to my notebook - can I share that Verizon data plan with my new Verizon iPad2?

I am about to buy an ipad2.  I already have a Verizon aircard built in to my SONY notebook - can I share that same existing Verizon data plan with my new Verizon iPad2?  I would rather not to have to buy a second data plan.
    Thanks for your input

    No.
If your notebook can be set up as an adhoc WiFi network or HotSpot you could use that instead of activating the plan on the iPad 2.
