ATA internal hard drives and SATA hard drives?

I've been searching through the posts and am starting to think I've got the oldest running Mac Mini!
My Mac Mini is installed with a 40 gb ATA hard drive and I think I need to upgrade to a larger internal drive. Although 80-100 gig's would be enough (I have a 250 gig external Firewire drive, I would prefer to go to a 160-320 gig drive, but all of the drives I've found in that size range are SATA drives. From reading the posts I've found so far, it looks to me as if my Mac won't host an internal SATA drive. Can anyone confirm that for me? Am I stuck with ATA drives only? If I'm limited to ATA drives, does anyone know where I can find a large ATA drive suitable for my Mac Mini?
I appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.

You are limited to ATA drives.

  • MacBook hard drive and SATA hard drive

Can I use the Hitachi’s Travelstar 5K160 HTS541616J9SA00 2.5-inch SATA hard drive to, instead of putting their drive in the enclosure (it doesn’t come pre-installed), put my MAC Book (black model) hard drive in? I want to transfer the data from this hard drive into another MAC Book. My original computer had a problem with the board but I have my hard drive with data intact. I want to buy this SATA but am not sure if this would work, if I can put in the MacBook hard drive as if it was the SATA one... Help, anyone? Thanks!
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi there,
A number of people on NewEgg's product page for that drive say it's great for a MacBook, so I'd assume it's ok.
You can put your old MacBook hard drive into any external USB2.0 enclosure and retrieve the data.
    Regards!

  • On my Macbook pro 15 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

That is correct. The tech specs indicate:
    Hard Drive Interface
    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
    Optical Drive Interface
3.0 or 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

  • Can time machine backup internal hard drive and external hard drive?

Hi, I have an iMac that I recently bought Leopard for specifically for Time Machine, which I heard rave reviews. I have a 160gb internal drive that I use for the OS and a 750gb external drive that I use for storing all my media (pics, music, movies). I recently bought an additional external hard drive, capacity 1tb. The original intention was to backup both my internal drive and my external drive to the new 1 tb drive through time machine.
When I go into the Time Machine preferences/options, it lists that the 750 drive is not to be backed up and I cannot remove it from the list. I called Apple support and they stated that you cannot backup an external drive through Time Machine which I think is ridiculous.
Both drives are connected to the computer via Firewire. Is there something I'm not doing right? Does anyone have a possible solution?
Please help as I incredibly annoyed with Apple if this is actually the case. Thanks

they told you that?! unbelievable. that's quite false. TM will back up any directly attached drive (external or internal) provided it's properly formatted. it has to be formatted mac os extended. how is your drive formatted?
    which I think is ridiculous.

  • I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to Mavericks OS.  The screen died and it's not worth replacing.  How do I remove the hard drive and use a drive sled to access info I need?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

  • Hard Drive and External Hard drive filled up instantly?

While using my Mac today, I came up with a dialogue box saying my hard drive (and external hard drive) are both full. This is strange because this morning I had over 30GB on my internal hard drive, and between 100GB and 300GB on my external hard drive.
How can both of these fill up at once?
I had uploaded approximately 100 photos to my external hard drive this morning, but there was still plenty room then.
    What is going on?

    HI Matt,
Get Disk Inventory so you can see exact sizes of files and folders.
*"I came up with a dialogue box saying my hard drive (and external hard drive) are both full. This is strange because this morning I had over 30GB on my internal hard drive, and between 100GB and 300GB on my external hard drive."*
Not sure what's going on but it would be a good time to boot from your install disk and check the hard drive.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers
    Take Care,

If you did not create recovery disks when you got the computer, you may order them.
If you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number 1-800-334-5144, and see if you can still get a set of recovery disks.

  • Difference between IVI driver and VXI PnP Driver

There are two type of Instrument Drivers for the same instrument, i.e. IVI Driver and VXI PnP Driver. I want to know what is really the difference between these two and on what conditions which one is better than other?
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi M.Jonathan,
both driver are a HW abstraction.
The IVI driver bases on the idea that a class of instruments (DMM, Scope, ...) support the same functionality. When changing an instrument you normaly have a different command set for these instruments. You have to modify your code. With the IVI layer, all instruments supports the same functions. The communication is done by IVI and driver layer.
In the description of the VXI PnP Driver. The VXI PnP is VISA based. The idea of VISA is having one API for all instrumentation buses. Based on VISA VXI PnP provides a pool of functions for instruments including GUIs.
'on what conditions which one is better than other' The first question should be: Is there a driver available. Any other reasons depend on the application.
    Hope, this helps.

  • Can I use TC as both a back up drive and a network drive?

can I use TC as both a back up drive and a network drive?

Yes, but the TC has no auto backup and TM cannot backup a network drive. Any files you put out there.. are like on the end of rickety pier.. in a storm. One day the whole thing will fall into the sea.

  • LOCATION CODE FOR BOTH THE C DISK DRIVE AND D RECOVERY DRIVE ARE BOTH 0. WHY?.

IS THERE INSTALLATION PROBLEM?.INSPITE OF FULL RECOVERY USING BRAND NEW DISCS - WHY?.
    THX. KRIS;

It means the C: drive and the D: drive are partitions on the 1st drive in the system and the HDD is designated Drive 0.  This has been standard notation for a long. long time.
You should be discussing this issue with the Technical Support of the computer's manufacturer.  The D: partition is your recovery partition.  The recovery partition is created by the system manufacturer, not by Microsoft or the Windows 7 installation
    disc.

  • Mac freezes after 10 minutes, hard drive and sata cable replaced

MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009) froze about a month ago. Computer would get slow and then just stop responding. Wouldn't even respond to force quit commands. Press and hold power button only way to free it up.
Directory Scan, Volume Structure failed. Bad Blocks.
Purchased new hard drive (Western Digital Blue 320 GB Mobile Hard Drive: 2.5 Inch, 5400 RPM, SATA II, 8 MB Cache) and replaced. Try restore from time machine, fails - freezes up with about 20 minutes remaining to finish.
Got a USB SATA cable (external) and new SATA cable (internal) for computer.
The drive and computer work fine when connected via external USB. Ran Apple Harware Test (ok), reset NVRAM, all software is up to date.
I replaced SATA cable in computer and tried drive internal - same problems. Still freezes after working for just a short while.
So to sum it up, new drive works via external USB but not when installed internally.
Any ideas what it could be? Did I buy the wrong drive? Do I have two bad SATA cables? Something else entirely?
    Thanks! Mike

On you picture going from right to left. the cables are/WIFI/Optical Drive/Hard Drive/ Battery. What you have circled is the cable for the Hard Drive. Sometimes you can have a little extra tape on the connector. I would not use it as a grab point to remove an reseat the cable. You would want to carefully pull the cable loose and make sure there is no separation in it and then reseat it. I cannot see your hard drive in the picture,so I do not know if you have the sata or ssd drive. If it is the sata drive ,do you hear any light clicking noise when you startup? This would mean that you have possible drive damage. If you have a ssd drive (solid state drive) it is not possible  to damage the drive by jarring it as there are no moving parts. Make sure all connection cables are fully seated. Include reseating of memory. If in recovery/utilities/disk utilities/ your startup volume does not show, that is problematic. There is single user and SMC reset. after that I do not know what to advise.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

  • Superdrive and SATA (hard drive) questions

on my 15" mac book pro i will randomly get error messages that say my cd/dvd drive cannot be found or that there is no software installed for the superdrive whenever i am about to burn a cd/dvd.
also just last night i made an idvd project and then burned the dvd and im aware that this requires a good amount of disk space but when i was finished i moved the project and all other files to and external drive and then deleted them from the drive on the MBP. but then i checked my disk space and it said i had even less than when i was totally finished with the project. can any one tell me whats going on?

well this is weird. i opened disk utility, then opened image checksum but i didn't perform anything with either of the two so i quit disk utility because i didn't know what i was doing and then i noticed that the trash was full again. so i opened it and there was the dvd project i know i deleted. so i empited the trash again and voila! i got my disk space back! i don't know what happened, but as long as i got my disk space back im happy. thanks for the reply!
