ATA PCI card with 48 bit BIOS support?

Hello,
I have an iMac G3 CRT purchased at the very end of 2001 (last of this model.) I am about to install a new hard drive. I am replacing an 80GB with a 160GB Maxtor (because they were the same price!) The drive box says that drives larger than 137GB require a Mac-compatible ATA PCI card with 48 bit BIOS support. Do I already have this? Is this part of the mother board? If not I will exchange the drive for a smaller one.
Thanks.
iMac G3 CRT Mac OS 9.2.x

I forgot to mention something. Firewire cases can allow you to make use of a larger drive though. So you could keep your internal and put the new drive in a firewire case that supports large drives and get lots of extra space.

  • Console Mode with third-party PCI card w/ open firmware bios,Open Boot Info

PPC macs used open firmware to boot, and their videocards contained forth code in their rom. There are even custom roms for PC video cards which contain code for the PPC mac open firmware.
Could such a card be initialized as the primary display device on an Ultra 5?
I'm betting I'm going to be answered with 'use a sun branded card'. I can't imagine the rom on these cards is so much different than that used on the PPC mac?
What exactly does Open Boot do to find a videocard? Are there any documents on this? I assume it finds some forth routine in the cards rom and runs that to initialize it and identify it's capabilities? Again, I would really appreciate some direction on where to look for docs.
I'm confused on the difference between openfirmware (apparently a spec), and open boot (sun's implementation? Are all implementations compatible with eachother?)
    http://www.openbios.org/Welcome_to_OpenBIOS
"Open Firmware is found on many servers and workstations and there are several commercial implementations from SUN, Firmworks, CodeGen, Apple, IBM and others."
Additionaly, what is the sun4u architecture? sun4v architecture? Which workstations are which? System handbook doesn't seem to say under 'hardware specs'.
So, if all else fails and using a card with an openfirmware rom doesn't help me, how do I go about doing this myself?
I know how to work VGA console mode via the stardard vga registers, Is there a way to get open boot to do exactly what I tell it in terms of registers and addresses?
Can I get an uncompiled form of my Open Boot Prom for my Ultra 5?
All I'm really looking for is good docs/source on how Open Boot/ Open Firmware work, specificly conerning PCI video devices.
    Thanks for any tips.

I haven't looked at anything beyond the OpenBoot level.
I've been neglecting this project for some time.
I just wanted to let anyone else in my situation know that the sun OpenBoot documentation was very helpfull in my sucessfully setting a mode with the card.
I don't know how the OS and later OpenWidows interact with the card, or with the information OpenBoot has about it, and it's current mode.
I hadn't really looked at any of that yet. Though this information will probably show up as soon as I bother to look for it, it'd be nice if some one recommends a specific doc, or has a short answer about the topic.
There happens to be an open source driver for my card, for XFree86 and Xorg, however, I've had enough of a challenge merely using OpenWindows.
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/XFree86.conf
Where are simmilar files for OpenWindows? Again, it's probably in some docs I haven't bothered to read yet.
Sparcy: Weird that the card has Fcode and OpenBoot doesn't add it's package to the device tree. I assume it treats it like a non Fcode PCI card? Does it recognize the contents of the PCI base address registers? Try proding it's PCI registers and see if they behave as expected.
If the card is actually working and you can read the expansion rom I don't see why the Fcode didn't work. Maybe it has a later incompatible Fcode revision? Open boot 4.x 5.x? sun4u as opposed to something else? Or maybe the Fcode was designed to lock the card to a certain type of system (I doubt that).
    http://www.sunshack.org/data/bootroms.html
Newer versions of openboot, and new hardware series listed at that link. Where's a more complete list?
Oh well, I guess I should bother to read up on this more thoroughly and finish the job.
Let me know if you find out what the problem was, or if you try that MAC card. Thanks.

  • Serial-ATA / PCI card / G4 agp 450hz

I've just bought the seagate barracuda 120g internal hard drive (model no. ST3120026AS) for my power mac G4 AGP 450 MHz.
I already have 2 hard drives connected
I can't see anywhere to connect my new hard drive, and the connector points are different to those of my current drives. [I've done some research and it seems that my old hard drives are IDE]
Do I need to buy a PCI card?? If so, what is a good one to buy?
Or do I need something different???
I would really appreciate help on this matter... I only have approx. 1GB of space left on my current hard drives and can't properly use my mac
    Thank you much
    Matty

To use a Serial-ATA drive, you will need a Mac-compatible PCI card.
    There are some here.

Which sata drives will work with the Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA card?

Pretty much any of the SATA 3.0 Gbps drives.
Western Digital Black and Blue and Hitachi 7K drives are all good choices.
If you try a SATA 6.0 Gbps drive, it will need to be jumped to limit to SATA 3.0 Gbps.

  • Kt400 ultra hanging when running wireless pci card with XP

I've tried installing two different wireless pci (802.11b) cards on my system.  Windows usually hangs within 1 to 3 minutes.  I've tried different pci slots, updating drivers, etc.  No go.  Can't find much on google, only thing I found was a possible conflict between wireless card and USB controllers.
    Anybody have any ideas.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I've got the same issue with KT3 Ultra2 + XP2000, wireless NIC Netgear WG311.
Tried a lot of tuning, from Bios setting to driver options, but nothing worked.
I'm sure this is not related to PCI revision ( 2.1 or 2.2 ) because this is running
pretty fine on the same computer under Linux Mandrake 9.1
I tried every possible combination of PCI slot / driver / Bios setting ...!!!!
The problem now is that, in addition to having found not workaround, I still do not
know where the problem come from : VIA chipset, Netgear driver, AMi Bios, ....
Don't know if I should change the motherboard or the NIC, or just wait for ....???
Any suggestion will be welcome !!!!

  • How to program for two PCI cards with identical device ID?

I have 2 PCI-6713 cards, and they have identical device ID. I'm trying to program in Linux using C++. I got some examples from NI, but non of them seems considering this problem. Where can I get help for this?
    Thanks.
    flofish

The short answer is that you should read out the EEPROM on each of the two cards you find to determine which one is which.
I don't have specific examples for the 6713 on how to do this, but here are the necessary pieces.
EEPROM Read Example - this example is for the E series MIO card, but will be similar for the 6713.
E Series RLPM - in chapter 5 it describes how to read the EEPROM, which corresponds to the example. The 6713 may have a different EEPROM on it than the example uses and you may have to adjust the code accordingly. Look on the 6713 to find the EEPROM and then look up its manual online. Most likely it is one of the following chips: MB88341, DAC8043, 8800.
EEPROM Map for the 6713 - this is the roug
h allocation of information within the 6713. I don't see the serial number listed, but it should be stored on there somewhere. You may want to read out the complete EEPROM and compare the values to the known serial numbers of your boards.

  • PCI cards with more A/O?

Does NI hace PCI based DAQs with more than 2 analog outputs? (say 8) I couldn't find any on the web site.

The specs will vary a little from board to board, so your choice will probably depend on how much noise you will be willing to tolerate.  You might want to check out this link.  You can take a look at the specs of different boards and compare.  Enjoy.  FYI - I got to that link by clicking the "Manuals" link under Resources on one of the product pages for an AO board.

  • Hetis G41 Supported PCI-card size

The G41 comes with a risercard for support of 1 pci and 1 pcie card. However i cannot see if there is room for a pci-card with a 12 cm wide bracket and print 7 cm wide and 14 cm long.
I hope it is not only for low-profile pci-cards.
Anyone, tried to fit a full hight adapter in this neat box?
From the AVL list i se amongst other a R4350-D512H V161, and from the picture of this graphic card i expect it to be on a 12 cm bracket.
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1640&maincat_no=130

The manual includes a frontal picture of the back side of the Hetis G41.  On that picture you can see the dummy brackets and also USB Ports and other standardized interfaces.  Take a ruler and measure the length of a standard USB interface.  Then measure the length of the port/interface on the picture in the manual.  What you now have is a ratio.  Measure the length of the dummy bracket and apply the ratio.  You should now have an idea regarding the size of the bracket that will fit.
The brackets on extensions cards are usually just screwed onto the card PCB.  Replecements brackets should be available somewhere.  I have a PCI Wireless Card here which came with a smaller replacement bracket for smaller cases.  In a worst case scenario, you could modify the bracket yourself. Unscrew the bracket from the card, cut it and then match the two halves with a tape to meet the appropiate length.

  • Upgraded to USB 2.0 with pci card...works 1 out of 10 times????

    Hi,
Anyone having this problem? I installed a pci card with usb 2.0
The high-speed bus is recognized in my "about this mac". However, if I hook up my ipod or any device for that matter, it doesn't recognize it. Do I just need to wait longer? When I first installed the car I did have it connect a few times. But it's very inconsistent. I'm running 10.3.9 and I'm about to upgrade to 10.4. Might this help?
    Thanks in advance
    Pete

What brand/model card did you install. Not all USB 2.0 PCI cards work in a Mac. Your best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, OS X doesn't need the drivers.
All of these Cards are NEC chipset based

  • Range Expander with a WMP54GX4 SRX400 pci card

I am having a great deal of trouble receiving a signal from the various radio signals here. Can I use a range expander with this card or do I have to utilize a router? Is there an expander that will work with my product or is there a product to extend my current antenna wire so that I can move the unit around the room?
    Thanks...

I am not using a router...I have a pci card with an antenna. I need to find out if I can use a range expander with this card or do I need to install something else, if there is something else.
I appreciate anything you can recommend.

  • (solved) get X to use my PCI card instead of onboard graphics.

I'm trying to install arch on an old P4 dell (dimension 2350) and given the specific requirements and restrictions of this given beast I'm having a bit of trouble getting X configured.  (I'm turning it into a replacement for my modded xbox running xbmc, yes, I know it won't play hi-def)
    Here's the setup:
    - It has onboard graphics (intel) which I don't plan on using since it only has vga out.
    - I've installed my video card (ATI radeon 9250 - hey it's the best standard pci card I could find)
    Here's the problem:
    - Everything works with the onboard intel chip
    - If I try to plug my monitor in to the ATI card it (the monitor) dims and doesn't register as being attached.\
    - I've tried turning off the onboard graphics in my bios but the only options are "onboard" and "auto" so it's currently set to auto.
    More fun:
    - The fun part is that I plan on using the ATI card's svideo out to my tv once it's set up, I'm just trying to get the monitor to work while I configure everything.
I'm considering trying to run an ubuntu live disc and seeing if I can copy over the xorg.conf file that gets generated.
    Any ideas?
    **edit
After some searching I've got it working.  Apparently linux still reads onboard cards with this pc/bios because of the piss poor bios.
i added 'blacklist agpgart' & 'blacklist intel_agp' (without quotes) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, set video to 'auto' in the bios, plugged the monitor into my card and rebooted.
    sweet.

  • Replace WLAN Mini PCI Card in U350

I got a brand new U350 end of last week, and beside the fan noise I'm really happy with the device (like many others I do hope Lenovo will provide an updated BIOS that will change the fan behavior to make it more quiet).
However, I'd like to replace the Broadcam b/g WLAN Mini PCI Card with a b/g/n card. I was thinking of getting an Intel 5100AN card and was wondering if such a card would work, or if there is a lock in the BIOS that will prevent it from working (I read somewhere that even if Lenovo uses such cards, the ones you can purchase in stores would not work).
    Thanks,
    Mike

Thank you for your answer. I appreciate.
Since my question, I've found a solution for my wifi card to work. It was given by "electrochain". It just consisted by manually disabling a specific pin on my card. And now, it works.
    Thank you again.

  • USB 2 PCI Card for G4

i am at a point where i need to add usb ports to my g4. i have an external hub, but hate it. wires everywhere, extra wall wart. will any pci usb card work, or are there certain requirements that i need to look for?
    thanks,
    typhon

    HI typhon-
Any USB PCI will not work. An Ali or VIA chipset is almost certain to cause problems.
Any USB 2.0 PCI card with a NEC chipset will work best.
    Ratoc is a definite winner.
The brand, though, is not nearly as important as the NEC chipset.
Even if the card doesn't state "Mac compatible", if it has the NEC chipset, you should have no problems.
Also, you won't need any drivers that are often supplied. Tiger will natively support the chipset/card.
BTW, many "PC brand" cards, with the NEC chipset, can be had for $10-$15. Cheap, and they work.

  • P4N Diamond unable to detect PCI card(s) ??

    Hello all P4N Diamond owners,
I just have one P4N Diamond board with me, was trying to play around, everything worked by "default". However, when I added PCI cards to the PCI-1 and PCI-2 slots, none of them able to detect my cards. These are the cards I have tried and proven working on other boards.
    FlyVideo 2000 TV Card
    SoundBlaster Audigy
    el-cheapo 10Mbps LAN card
I don't have other PCI cards with me at the moment, but I doubt any of them will work.
Worse is on the FlyVideo 2000 TV card, it also "disable" 1394 and onboard Audio magically whenever I plug the card in.
    BIOS I've tried : 1.4, 1.5. Same behavior.
So, I swapped with 945G Platinum, 955X Platinum, exact same config, those cards can be detected and working fine...
Do you guys have the same issue or it's just me?

Quote from: Maesus on 23-June-06, 15:40:01
ahh.... that is something I haven't tried yet. Good tips thanks!
hmm.... why did you say "force voltage into PCI slots" ? You suspect it "dropped" voltage to PCI slots?
nope not dropped in voltage.  by default this option is enabled. and mobo is sending pulses to each one PCI slot to detect is there any device or not and if no device detected mobo is stop powerup the PCI slot which was no detected any device. by disabling this feature, mobo will forced to push PCI slots poweredup at all time doesnt matter is it used by any PCI device or not. so if that "autodetect" function of mobo report no device there PCI slot will remain unpowered. and that may a reason for not working.

  • Firewire card with multiple controllers

    Quick question....
I am looking for a firewire card for connecting 2 cameras.  Will I be able to use a standard PCI-E card or will I need to look for one with one controller per port....  Most share a single controller voer multiple ports.  I've had problems int eh past with multiple ports on one card, but this may have been a PCI card with limited system bandwidth.....
    Ideas anyone?
The cameras will be most likely 1280x1024 RGB cameras with 60FPS.
    Cheers for any help forthcoming.

    Nobody, no?
The cameras are actually monochrome, 8-bit not RGB (24-bit) and only go up to 30Hz.....
    I mean theoretically a FW400 card should handle a 1024pixel x 1280pixel x 8bit x 30Hz (314 Mbit/s without overhead) picture no problem but adding a second camera will more than saturate the bus.....
Anyone know of a decent PCI-E FW card which has two ports with a seperate controller for each?  Please?
