ATA100 drives on the ATA66 interface???

Hi - I'm sure this has been asked, but could not find a definitive answer either within the forum or by Googling....
Can you put an ATA100 hard drive in the front bay that is supported by ATA66 interfaces?
I made the assumption you could and had success on drive recognition, formating, and limited usage. What I mean by limited is that I think this drive is causing my system to crash and sometimes the drive just drops off. Plus - lots of weird 'drive' noises are coming from the computer. The drive is old, so it could be dying, but wanted to eliminate the 66 vs 100 theory.
Thanks
jc

John,
There's shouldn't be any issues. Drives are nearly always backwards compatible with the older standards.
But check that the drive is connected properly and securely, and that it is configured properly. Master, Slave, or Cable Select ? Where is it on the ribbon ? on the middle connector ? or end connector ? Is there another drive on the ribbon ?
How old is the drive ? Is it ATA/100 ? we could make an educated guess from the capacity.

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

    Thank you LowLuster,
At the apple store they said I needed an esata to usb wire.  But looking at wires on line has been confusing.  Is sata the same as esata?  How do I know if I need a usb 3 or usb 2?

  • 5 second delay when bringing up the SATA interface (HP dm1-3100ev)

    Hello everyone,
I am using ArchLinux on a HP dm1-3100ev (aka dm1z). This little machine is equipped with an 80GB Intel X25-M SSD (2nd gen) and boots and runs nice and fast.
However, I just noticed a curious issue, where the SATA interface takes 5.3 seconds to appear. According to dmesg:

This is on linux 2.6.39. Anyone have any ideas why this is and how I can reduce this delay? This is by far the slowest part of the boot sequence right now!

According to dmesg:
dmesg wrote:[    1.510296] Switching to clocksource tsc

This is on linux 2.6.39. Anyone have any ideas why this is and how I can reduce this delay? This is by far the slowest part of the boot sequence right now!

  • Cannot open nib - The application Interface Builder quit unexpectedly

Just installed the iPhone SDK and installed sample code. The Interface Builder will not start. At startup, the following message is displayed: "The application Interface Builder quit unexpectedly."
I've tried the standard Xcode SDK and it has the same problem. I've repaired permissions on the disk, to no avail. I'm stumped on this. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for asking. It happens when I click the "Interface builder.app" name in finder and when I double-click an .xib file name in finder.
As I mentioned, I have repaired permissions on the drive to no avail. I have also read older posts on the web referring to various preference plist files but those don't exist with this build of xcode.
I have also had older builds of xcode on this mbp and worked thru a couple of tutorials. Interface Builder from those older builds worked. I'm not sure were to get them, now, and I doubt they would have the iphone sdk included.

  • How to access my hard drive over the internet?

    Hi,
I would like to be able to access my hard drive while I am away from my desk. I am not running OS X Server. How can I do this?
Also, I am behind an Airport Base Station. Which ports would I need to open up?
Besides my Firewall and my Administrator password, how else can I secure the access?
    thank you....

VPN does not allow you to control your computer remotely, you are probably thinking of VNC. A VPN essentially extends your local network so that you can access it remotely. You can control your host computer to more than you can control any other computer by accessing it over your LAN.
I still think a VPN is the best option, but it's not easy to install (MacOS X server has a VPN with a GUI built in). OpenVPN is a great option, and there are several GUI interfaces for it (look for these on www.versiontracker.com). This is best because it is secure and will allow you to access your entire hard drive.
Like I said in the last post, WebDAV is also an option. This is what a .Mac iDisk is. This will only allow you access a specific folder (or set of folders) that reside in the Apache (var/www) directory. Although you can always make an alias to the apache directory and keep it in your Documents folder.
A third option that I didn't state before because it's probably the least best is to use NFS to access your home computer. This will allow you to access your entire hard drive. The downside to this is that there is no encryption, nor a password. For security, it uses IP or domain addresses. So this is not an option unless you will to accessing your hard drive from a computer (or a few computers) with (a) static IP address(es).

  • Can you share a hard drive with the current airport extreme

    Hey all!
I read that you can share USB drives with the new airport extreme. Can you do that with the current ones?
    Thanks,
    B

Massi65, Welcome to the discussion area!
You really should start a new thread since your question is about the new square AEBS and the thread started with a question about the previous AEBS.
With either AEBS you could wirelessly gain access to a hard drive by one of these 3 methods:
Use a hard drive with wireless networking capabilities. The drive would connect to the wireless network like any other wireless client.
Use a hard drive with an Ethernet interface. Connect the drive to the AEBS's LAN port.
Connect a hard drive via FireWire or USB to another Mac and then share the drive from that Mac.
The new square AEBS offers a new possibility. You can connect a USB drive directly to the new AEBS and share it to devices connected to the AEBS's network.
    What performance could I expect?
No one can answer this directly since no one has any of these devices to try.

  • Having issues after installing Essbase V9.3.1,configuring the SQL interface

I am having issues after installing Essbase V9.3.1 and configuring the SQL interface. we are using UNIX/AIX box for our Essbase server and UDB DB2 9.1 SP6 as our SQL Interface.
When tried to run an ESSCMD script to perform BUILDDIM operation on Essbase application using the load rule (with the SQL interface), got the error as recorded in the application log file and is attached at the bottom and the .odbc.ini file on the server looks as follows.
Can somebody tell me whether .odbc.ini needs any correction or what else should I do to correct the issue and able to work thru using SQL interface? Appreciate any help provided in this regard. Thanks,

I had similar errors when first setting up the SQL interface. Are you on a 64 bit operating system on the essbase server? If so Essbase needs to use the 32 bit odbc driver, not the default 64 bit driver.
The 32 bit driver is still available here SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe <-----This is the 32 bit (Use)
The Administrative tools by default uses system32\odbcad32.exe <----This is the 64 bit (Don't Use)
Once I opened the 32 bit driver interface directly and set it up the errors went away.

  • Why does the sensing interface flap or frequently go to the down state in IDS ?

    Hi all,
this is the answer I found in Cisco website, but according to this, I didnot make any updates or any configuration changes, but stilll my sensing interface is going down. I'm not even getting the error messages which they have mentioned at the end.
Ans: During a signature update and reconfigurations, sensorApp stops to process packets as it processes the new signatures in the update. The network driver detects that sensorApp has stopped and pulls any new packets from the buffer. So the network driver does different things, which depends on the configuration and sensor model:
Promiscuous Interface—It brings the link down on the interfaces, and brings the link back up once sensorApp starts to monitor again.
Inline Interface or Inline Vlan Pair—It depends on the Bypass setting:
Bypass Auto—The driver keeps the link up and begins to pass packets through without analysis. It then reverts back to sending the packets through sensorApp once sensorApp starts to monitor again.
Bypass Off—The driver brings the link down on the interfaces, which is the same as in promiscuous mode, and brings them back up once sensorApp starts to monitor again.
So, if sensor app does not pull packets from the buffer, which possibly occurs because there is no interface configured to process packets, then the driver can put the interface in a down state.
These logs are seen when the sensing interface flaps:
    28Jun2011 09:03:09.483 6050.885 interface[409] Cid/W errWarning Inline databypass has started. 28Jun2011 09:03:13.639 4.156 interface[409] Cid/W errWarning Inline databypass has stopped. 28Jun2011 09:19:23.922 970.283 interface[409] Cid/W errWarning Inline databypass has started. 28Jun2011 09:19:27.486 3.564 interface[409] Cid/W errWarning Inline databypass has stopped.

It is possible you are overloading that little 4215. If that is the case you should also be seeing "missed packet percentage" messages in your events.
How much traffic is your 4215 getting? Those sensors will start to drop packets for inspection at about 30 Mb/s.

  • How to change the Ethernet Interface name in Solaris 10

I have to install Oracle 10G RAC on three nodes with different ethernet cards, but the ethernet interface name must be the same which is the precondition for Oracle RAC installation.
So I want to know how can I change the ethernet name in Solaris.
For example, the ethernet name in the OS is "ce0", how can i change the interface name "ce0" to "e1000g0".
    bash-3.00# dladm show-dev
ce0 link: unknown speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full
ce1 link: unknown speed: 100 Mbps duplex: half
ce2 link: unknown speed: 100 Mbps duplex: half
ce3 link: unknown speed: 100 Mbps duplex: half
ce4 link: unknown speed: 100 Mbps duplex: half
ce5 link: unknown speed: 0 Mbps duplex: unknown
    Thanks in advance.

    s-wilson wrote:
You can't. The ce or e1000g refers to the driver as well as the adapter itself. The only exception I am aware of is: the ipge and e1000g which both refer to the Intel Pro 1000.I'm pretty sure I've renamed a driver in the past (and all references to it in name_to_major, path_to_inst, driver_aliases, and minor_perm) and had it function just fine after 'plumb'ing it up. However I just tested this by trying to turn a 'pcn' driver into a 'foobar' driver on a vmware box. It looks like everything works except some internal bits of the driver continue to create one file with 'pcn' in the name instead of 'foobar'. And since this is Solaris 10, the /devices filesystem is dynamic and read-only. I can't seem to force the change.
So while this may be possible with some drivers (and maybe only on older versions of the OS), it doesn't seem to be generally possible for all drivers on Solaris 10.

  • Getting the network interface up in solaris 10

    Hi,
I am a solaris newbie and am trying to get the network interface up on solaris 10. I have set the required details in
    /etc/hostname.if
    /etc/hosts
    /etc/inet/ipnodes
    /etc/inet/netmasks
    /etc/defaultrouter
yet on the startup i get a message "failed to bring up IPv4 interfaces : interfacename"
And when the server starts up after giving the command "ifconfig if up"
    the network interface comes up.
I need to get the interface up on the startup itself.
can anyone help me on this ?????
    Thanks in advance,

... and of course, you need compatible hardware.
But you failed to tell anyone what Ethernet adapter you're trying to use.
Is it on the HCL ? http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/
If it requires third party driver software, did you install that as well ?
You failed to tell anyone whether you're installing to Solaris x86 or to Solaris SPARC.
( For example, a PeeCee NIC will generally just not work in a SPARC system. )

  • How to modify capabilities for the ethernet interfaces in a Solaris 10 x86

    Hello.
Does anybody know how to configure the ethernet capabilities in a interface in a X86 server? I have read that NDD command is not supported for this kind of servers and I cannot find how to do that.
My root problem is that the IPMP is not working and my first clue is the configuration for cap_pause parameter in the involved interfaces, that they are active for both IPMP interfaces.
How can I modify cap_pause for the interfaces in this server: X4170 with Solaris 10.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Luis.

Not familiar with the X4170 but you might want to look for a config file in /kernel/drv that matches your interface. There are some configuration parameters you can set there if the device driver supports the .conf file.

  • Am I using my drives in the best way in terms of performance?

I want to make sure I'm using my iMac and drives in the way that will give me the best FCPX performance.
I have a mid-2010 iMac 2.93 GHz i7 core with 32 GB of RAM running OS 10.7.5.  It has an ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB graphics card.  My iMac has two internal drives:  a 256 GB flash drive (my "Macintosh HD"), and a 2 TB standard drive (my "Macintosh HD2").  I also have an external 2 TB drive from OWC/Macsales connected with Firewire 800.  I can't find the specifics on this OWC external drive, but I know I bought it as a video editing drive (it is not just for backing-up).  Though they introduced soon after my iMac, mine does not have a Thunderbolt port.
As things stand now, my OS and FCPX are on the main internal hard drive (it's my understanding that that is where they are automatically), which is the 256 GB flash drive labeled "Macintosh HD."  And I have my FCP event libraries and my projects on the second internal drive, which is the 2 TB internal drive labeled "Macintosh HD2."  Right now I'm only using the OWC 2 TB external firewire 800 drive for storing the video I upload from my cameras.
Does this sound like the best way to go in terms of performance?  I mean, is it better to use the internal 2TB drive for my events and projects?  Or would they be better on the OWC 2 TB external firewire 800 drive?  Or should the projects be on one and the events on the other?

T'bolt SSD or T'bolt RAID will be faster than your internal spinning disk drive.  For sure.
Larger drives are faster than smaller drives, mechanically.  But the data throughput is the same.  The differences are so small no one can notice in real world work.  But you get so many advantages with larger drives.
See, a hard drive encoluser has more than one platter in it.  A single 4 TB drive can have 4 platters in it.  so it access data, "mechanicaly" faster than a smaller drive with only 1 or 2 platters.  BUT when that data hits the controller card, the interface protocol (FW, USB, SATA, etc), it all shuts down to the same speed.  The platters and read/write heads are physicall MUCH faster than what the interface and controller card can handle.  So all that matters is how it gets connected.  USB 2 suck, FW is minimal for video, eSATA and SATA are pretty darned good, 6GB SSD is awesome, as is T'bolt.
Let me put it this way.  spinning disks are slower than SSDs in terms of internal "data access" (read/write) speed.  Both have to deal with the same "bandwidth" issues when they hit an interface such as USB or FW or T'bolt.  Two mechanically different things, but the work together to give you the total sum of a drives ultimate real world performance.
Now, a single SATA drive internally will be very slightly slower than a SATA drive in a T'bolt encoluser.  Because T'bolt has greater bandwidth than SATA.  But, the differences are so small, in daily real world operations no one would notice, and the price of the T'bot SATA enclosure would just be expensive.
That is why you see T'bolt enclosures with SATA drives always as RAIDs, 2 or more drives.  That's were SATA drives and T'bolt really shine.   T'bot really shines with SSD RAIDs, but their super expensive and super limited capacity.
But directly to your question, hard drives are the opposite of automobiles; bigger is always faster.

  • The interface type is valid, but the specified interface number is not configured

    Hi
I'm all new to using LabVIEW, which I have to use for a project. I'm trying to make a setup with a Keithley 2000 multimeter and an Agilent U2722A SMU. But I can't figure out how to get these instruments to communicate with LabVIEW. I can see and send commands to the Keithley 2000, but not the Agilent U2722A, with Agilent Connection Expert. But when I use LabVIEW I can't see any of them, and if I use the drivers I've found with "NI Instrument Driver Finder - Configure Search" I pops up with an error message saying
"Error -1073807195 occurred at VISA Open in Keithley 2000.lvlib:Initialize.vi->Keithley 2000 Read Multiple.vi?
    Possible reason(s):
VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF00A5) The interface type is valid, but the specified interface number is not configured.?"
I've read all the threads I could find about this problem, but none of them helped. I've checked that the NiVi488.dll is checked in MAX under the VISA options. When I open the VISA Interactive Control I see an ASRL1>>ASRL1::INSTR and ASRL10>>ASRL10::INSTR. I don't know why it says ASRL, when I'm using an USB/GPIB interface, but the Keithley 2000 have 10 as the address. (the Agilent U2722A is connected directly by USB)
    Assume I know nothing.
    Thanks

I'm using the GPIB-USB-HS. I also used this on the development PC when I exported the hardware configuration.
This shows up in my MAX config and when I scan instruments, all of them show up. I can query them in MAX no problem.
My installer includes all the .exe's from my project. As I said, I've done this with my previous 2009 installer without any issue. I upgraded my installer since I upgraded my project for version 2013. The error only happens when I run my code.

  • Does anybody know how to modify the driver for the Tektronix 370A curve tracer so that it will work with the 370B?

I am trying to control a Tektronix 370B curve tracer using LabView via a GPIB interface. However, there are no drivers available for download for the 370B. There is one available for the 370A, but it is not compatible with the 370B and I have been unable to figure out how to modify it to make it work with the 370B. Does anyone know how to modify this driver, or know of an existing driver that works with the 370B? Thanks!

    Hi S _Bracht,
Yeah, unfortunately, the Tektronix 370B does not currently have an instrument driver and the driver for the 370A is not supported by National Instruments (it is just posted on our website as a courtesy) - so I am afraid that there is not really any more information on the differences that might exist between the two available from National Instruments.  As an alternative, you can always develop your own driver using the VISA and 488.2 drivers + a copy of the user manual for the Tektronix 370B.  Otherwise, you may consider speaking with Tektronix or getting ahold of a User Manual for the 370A and comparing some of the settings - there are likely some differences in your configuration options at the very least.  Or, if someone out there has tackled this before and shares their knowledge...
    Good luck!
    Regards,
    Anna M.
