Athlon 64 3500 and K8N Neo2 benches found!

I found a few benchmarks that some guy posted for the Athlon 64 3500 and K8N Neo2.. This caught my attention because this is the same setup i have on order right now!
Here is the site:

Such a waste of money for a 10% gain which can EASILY be gained from o/c your current setup....
I am upgrading to new Technology.  From 754 to 939 pin. To put it short, I want the ability to use my Dual Channel Memory.

Obviously some ppl have WAY TO MUCH MONEY ON THEIR HANDS....
It is not that I have to much money on my hands.. I am just as broke as the next person. I like to live it up and keep up with the times & technology. I work hard and enjoy having nice things. I agree, maybe it is a waste of money for 10% performance gain but i'll tell ya what, you do what makes you happy especailly when its your money! When a member of this site gets on and says hey im upgrading, I will support their choice and wish them the best and even give them a hand if needed. Dont discourage people from what they are doing. That makes for a bad forum.

  • What RAM for o/cing 3500+ on K8N Neo2 Plat?

    Hi all,
Ive been reading all the problems with o/cing these little beasts, and i hope to god i dont run into any of them!
Im not using SATA or RAID so i guess thats a few problems out the way. My current RAM is really turd though, and its time to buy some new stuff. I want 1gb of something that is hopefully going to hit 250x10 with decent timings. Am i hoping for too much? Ive seen a few people with this setup though.
Ive read the recent Anandtech 3200 memory roundup, and had made up my mind on getting the crucial ballistix stuff. Its the only RAM in the test that hit DDR500 and beyond on the A64 platform. (Supposedly on the K8N neo2 aswell) But after more digging it seems that this is infact a load of crap.
    What do i buy???????
I dont want to shell out a load of cash on something that isnt going to perform. Im gutted that the crucial 3200 RAM isnt as good as i was lead to believe. It would have been great running DDR500 at those timings.
Anyway, ill also need to get a better HSF. The thermalright slk948 looks good but my local place just got the XP-90's in. Cant seem to find a decent review of them anywhere either. Any recommendations???
    Any help would be great,
    Cheers

I thought HT Frequency would affect memory throughput but apparently not. I'll try dropping it to 3x. Thanks.
Memtest is good at finding finding errors in a standalone environment by writing a particular pattern to every location in memory then reading it back to make sure it hasn't changed. So it very good for finding marginal chips and validating that everything is properly hooked together. It also has the advantage of running standalone so you eliminate any XP/driver issues from the equation.
Prime95 is an excellent CPU/memory exerciser because it checks the accuracy of an elaborate computational algorithm to make sure of the results. And since it is running under XP it also tests the entire configuration to some extent because drivers and hardware that are marginal will likely fail much faster under the constant load.
What I call Prime95 Lotto is particularly cool. It is the search for the first 10,000,000 digit prime number. If you find it you get a large share of a $100K prize which is currently about $50K. It also runs in the background and utilizes the CPU 100% without affecting your other apps so you can still use your system while it is running.
The Red Rocket Folding Team effort also makes a great background stress tester.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?boardid=30
I've also found a great graphics stresser:

Get both going and you really work your system!

  • Zalman cnps 7000(A/B) and K8N Neo2 backplate

    Hi,
Tried this question before, in an existing cpu cooler thread, but without luck.
Could anyone confirm that the zalman cnps7000(A/B) coolers can be used with K8N Neo2 stock backplate works or if the zalman backplate have to be used ?
    Thanks.....
    From SAB´s FAQ.....
Zalman has revised the fastening types in their 7000 series HSF's - and choosing the proper model will ensure that the stock MSI backing plate removal is not required.

    Thanks blazing storm.....
Yes, It would be good to have a confirmation about mounting the 7000 cooler with the Stock MSI backplate.
I´m not that worried about the cooler fitting the the board itself, but on the Zalman mounting picture they seem to use the zalman backplate.

  • ATI 9000 and K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard, 1gig (2x 512mb) Dual PC4000 Crucial Ballistix memory, AMD 64bit 3000+ Winchester and a ATI Radeon 9000 pro 128mb.  I am waiting on my X800 XT PE 256 arriving, but in the mean time i am having some trouble running Counter-Strike on this set up, my old system with same graphics card could run CS with 100fps no problem, but now it drops to around 30fps in a heavy gun fight, I have dropped all open gl and D3D setting to performance, messed around with the bios setting's but nothing help's, also I have tried many different ATI driver versions but nothing help, if anyone has had the same problems or can offer any possible causes solutions I would be very gratefull. Oh I have a OCZ 520W PSU

    Leon28,
The Radeon should perform at least as well as it did on your old comp. Are you using the same version of the Catalyst Drivers you used in your old comp?
You can get the latest  ATi Drivers to see if it makes a difference.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • AMD 4000+ and K8N Neo2 Platinum ?

The regular AMD 4000+ (San Diego Core or Venice Core) will work on the K8N Neo2 Platinum right?

You looked in the wrong place: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587.  As for why. later CPUs had improvements which require updated BIOS support.

  • AMD64 3500+ & MSI K8N NEO2 SATA Oddity

(This is on a SATA Seagate 160GB Barracuda - only drive in my system)
I have a weird problem where when I first start up my computer in the morning, on the RAID bios screen it says "Detecting Array..." and never does anything. Then, when I hit the reset button, it will detect it, say it's healthy, and windows will start up no problem.
It doesn't seem like a big deal, but if anyone knows how I can get it to recognize it without resetting, I would like to know.

I had the same problem, although it never took me 14 resets to get past the "Detecting Array..."... maybe 4 at most
I got past this problem by doing a couple things but I'm not sure if they will work for everyone.
First of all, I'm on a single drive array. So obviously read what I say with that in mind.
1- First of all follow the guide written by rsheppick:
Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
2- Thenl check out the screenshots of the BIOS screen in this thread, and adjust yours so that all entries related to SATA are the same
    Desperately need help with K8N!
--> I don't think it is clear in rsheppick guide to enable SATA1/SATA2 DMA TRANSFER (sata3/sata4 if you're using those)
3- check your boot order and try to load an OS (I also ran into many problems here mainly because my "backed up"   version of XP didn't have a proper boot file, and then load the necessary nVidia drivers
4- now in my case i was still running into the hang up at "detecting array..."
All I did to get around it was reset the bios to defaults...and then exited and saved. Then rentered bios and changed the boot order to floppy, cd, HD.  Since the RAID is now disabled there should be NO hang up.  Now you might be thinking that I just removed all the array work that I did in steps 1-3.  But the drive still has all the RAID settings (if you want to see this then you can re-enable the RAID option and then you can press F10 to see that the Stripe is still the same one you created in step 1)......so now you have a stripe active but now hang up
5- So now (making sure that boot order is fine) load up your OS (I'm assuming winxp) and windows should eventually give you a warning that there are no storage devices on the system--this is because windows cannot recognize the RAID drive...at this point setup will tell you to press S and insert your RAID floppy that came with the motherboard
Well anyway...after about 30-50 reboots this is what I got to work for me.
Now I don't know if all that stuff I said about RAIDs being still active even though I disabled it in the bios makes logical sense in the computer world...it certainly worked for me.

  • Update for DiamondMax 10 16 MB and K8N Neo2

    Hi Everyone,
Well, I did read many posts regarding this issue, after the I got this HDD, however, I have not seen any updates with the last couple of months. The drive I have was manufactured in Jun 22, 2005, so I am assuming that it has the latest firmware. I am using Murdok's 1.8 BIOS for the NEO2.
I want to see what people are struggling with because I have a problem. When installing WINXPSP2 (SP2 slipstream), it goes through the first "blue screens" ok, loads files ok. Then when it reboots, it says "operating system missing" and will not boot to the HDD. I've check to make sure the boot sequence is to this drive. I have done cold boots too. I've tried everything. I am not using raid, just a single drive. I have tried all of the things previously posted. I am not overclocking. Any ideas before I send it back to Newegg and take a 15% restocking charge?

Finally!  After a week, I can finally, and safely, upgrade to Firefox 10 again!  Thanks!

  • New K8N Neo2 Platinum, AMD 64 3500+ sytem freezing

I have posted to a couple of forums and still can't get this problem resolved, hope you guys can help.
I put together a new system last Friday night and spent all weekend trying to fix it. I ended up with 2 bad power supplies, one fresh from the store was dead, but got that resolved. Got the system up and running, got online, surfing and FREEZE..everything stopped.  Rebooted, 5 minutes later, same thing, over and over again.
Tried checking memory, it's fine, both sticks, power supply is fine, everything seems to be running fine except it keeps freezing after about 5 minutes.
I wonder if it's a bad board, so I tried to RMA it with the vendor and they want me to try outside the case to see if it won't freeze there, haven't had the time yet cause I'm working, will try that tonight.
Also, one guy on a different board suggested that I try a fresh install of windows xp as the old drivers might be interfering with the new drivers. I will try that tonight also.
If anyone can give me any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. If I can't get this resolved, I'm going to send back the board for a new one.
    Below are my specs:
    AMD 64 3500+
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
    2 x 512 Kingston ddr400 (pc3200)
    antec true power 480
wd 120gb hd, wd 80gb hd
    cdrw generic, dvdrw generic
    bfg 6800 oc video card
    thanks

Thank you both for your posts, they are both informative and I will be using your information Friday night. I'm just so tired after work, I don't want to get part way into it and have to leave it for the next day, I have to get up at 3am everyday and get home around 6-7pm and I'm beat!
So, Friday after work, I'm going to start with just the basics and go from there, using all the information I've been getting from this board and a couple of others. Seems like the best thing to do is, start with barebones, reset cmos, reset battery and install fresh windows os.
I will post Friday after I start and hopfully I will get this problem  fixed.
    thanks again

  • Few question above the k8n neo2 platinum and raid

    hi
i have for now intel 3.4ghz and asus p4c800dlux and 4 sata drives :
2x36giga wd 10000 raptors in raid 0 (connected to the on board promise sata controller)
2x200giga wd 7200 jd sata that (connected to on bard sata ports)
i order a athlon fx-55 and k8n neo2 platinum for a oc (a have 2x512 corsiar pc4000pro and hydro cool 200 ) and its look that its going to be problem
"SATA ports 1+2 will not maintain a lock and you can and will corrupt hard drives placed on these channels if you raise the HTT above 220mhz."
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=ge...890&articID=228
so im in a problem, if i wont to do nice oc (and i will) i need to leave sata ports 1 and 2 not connected and buy a sata-pci controller for my 2x200giga , im right ?
in that case i need to connect the raptors in raid 0 in the sata 3-4 prots (near the agp) but:
the raid on the noe2 is "NV RAID (Software)" it means that there is no a controller like promise and the cpu need to replace the controller work, so its doing a lower performance.

If you had 4 huge drives I would be more sympathetic. To me every board is a compromise, resulting in me having to abandon something I might have done previoulsy. In you case ditch the two 36gb drives, and slum it with the 200gb drives. Remember that "overclocking" is not a right. There will be many users oblivious of the SATA 1/2 overclocking problems running 4 sata drives in RAID without a problem.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - SATA1/SATA2

I've seen some concerns on the forums about SATA1/SATA2 not being stable on this board.  Is this still a valid concern if I do not overclock my machine? I plan on using a 300GB SATA Seagate on SATA1 as a drive where I will store my backups.  I'll use an external USB 2.0 cabinet for the 300GB SATA drive if reliability is going to be a problem.
    Your thoughts are appreciated,
    Dan

I think all you said is very odd  as i've succeeded in o/cing my 3800+ x2 at 10 x 233 whereas i plugged my Western Digital serial ata Hdd on serial port 1, and i'm not running any instability pbs or overheats, am i lucky or is it due to the latest official bios version ??
Then how long have you OCED it? but be aware then you might screwed it out but just in matters of time.
I agreed with Syar's explanations as ocing the system at that range may caused instability. However, I do experience on my own as I did screwed my HDD SATA WD where I've OCed at 225-230 my HDD is totally burn due to the OCing.

  • Another can't get past 240htt post (k8n neo2)

    3500+
    k8n neo2 plat (1.1)
    adata pc4000 (ddr500)
    Fortron 400w psu
With HT at x4,  i can't get past 240 when my ram is rated at 250mhz on loosest timings and 1t and dual channel.  Doesn't matter whether i'm trying to max my cpu and using divider on ram, or lowering cpu multiplier and maxing ram, both max at 240mhz.
my cpu is watercooled with 1.7v goign to it, and 2.85 volts to the ram.  I measured the +12v rail during Prime 95 in Priority 10 mode and it was 11.74-11.75, so psu isn't the problem right?
I first had my agp thing set to 67mhz, and i would get disk write errors and failure to load OS errors during boot up.  When i try 68, after sitting at welcome screen for a few minutes, it loads to windows and immediately freezes.
    Any ideas?
