Athlon Thnuderbird and k7n2 Delta 2 Platinum [SOLVED]

Hello there.
I needed to upgrade my machine but keep my current CPU, so after a little reading around i decided to go for the K7N2 Delta2 Platinum board.
Alot/all the places that sell this product in the UK, list it as being able to utilise the AMD Athlon Thunderbird chip. It also states that the board supports the "AMD Athlon" so i thought it was a safe bet.
Anyway i recieved the board today and the machine will not post. The fans are spinning and it does'nt beep. I have tried different RAM and a different PSU. I have read the manual and ill be honest when i say i was a little suprised to see "no go action" as this is the first computer i have built thats ever given me any trouble.
The chip that i have is an Athlon Thunderbird 1.0 Ghz 266 fsb axia-y. With the multipliers unlocked from an experiment from some years ago. I know the chip works as i have used it for about 4.5 years untill this morning when my new bits arrived.
I wonder if you would all be kind enough to give me some pointers.
Thanks
Take Care

The mobo boots? Reply from MSI technical support suggested that this mobo does not support T'bird. I'm unable to achieve any POST (using T'bird 1.4GHz, 133 MHz fsb and 1.75Vcore) Sympton is similar to yours earlier. Pls advice how u do it?
I am really sorry but i dont really know what to suggest. Does yours switch  on atall ? Mine didnt.
Off topic: I was installing Gentoo and i got a segmentation fault. I thought, uh oh, Faulty RAM.
Ive am doing some testing right now with memrest86 and Goldmemory, and they both find a load of errors.
Ive not given up and i tried a few bios setting to see if i could make a difference, or whether it was dodgey hardware. But to no avail. Untill i put the memory in Dimm1 and 2, thus taking it out of dual channel mode. So far so good, as far as the mem testing goes.
Ill let you know.
My bios settings for the memory are by SPD and the memory voltages is set to Auto. Safest i thought.
I thought about updating my bios, if it needs it, ill have to check. But i am relectant to just incaser the change decides it doesnt like the t'Bird.
Any thoughts on why i cant (it seems so far, dont wanna speak too soon) run the memory in dual channel mode? Or should i start a new thread ?
Take care all and thanks for all your input.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta Platinum

I want to update my mother board, I am thinking of getting a K7N2 Delta Platinum has anyone got anything good or bad to say about this board?

    Hi Ballie,
I've recently got one of these.
Had a lot of fun installing the operating system etc direct from a K7N2G-ILSR board. Most of them revolved around the fact that the RAID controllers are different so I had no choice but to wipe the discs and do a clean install. BACK EVERYTHING UP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING (yes I'm shouting, so you can hear me....)
I've still not got a proper answer to the problem in this thread yet http:// [url=https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71500]RAID not fault tolerant on K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum? [/url]
, but the board works fine. The overclocking capabilities of the CoreCell technology are very good. I got it up to somewhere in the 2500's before it crashed and then it restarted beautifully at a setting just below the one it went out on, all on it's own.
I'm not running it overclocked presently.
I think my personal preference would be for a board with the Promise RAID controller as it is configurable, whereas nVidia's Raidman is purely a look and see program. If they sorted that out to the same standard as Promise then I would be happy. Obviously, if you don't plan to use RAID that isn't going to be an issue.
Plenty of USB ports, etc. and nice easy colour coded plugs, etc. to make sure you shove them connectors in all the right holes. Has 9 holes for attaching the board to the case, so plugging things like memory chips into it doesn't cause it to bend as much as the less well supported boards. I'd still plug things in on a flat surface before mounting the board though.
The CPU temperature sensor is one of those bendy wire things, so make sure you peel the paper off the underside of the chip and carefully curve the temp wire over into a U shape so that it springs up and presses flat against the underside of the centre part of the chip for best accuracy.
One odd thing - the temperature readings that are active in my CoreCell are CPU and System. The Northbridge temp isn't showing, dunno why... anyone got any suggestions??
A lot of the connectors are concentrated on the right side of the board and this can give rise to a few cable conflicts with things like HDD's getting in the way, but if you have a case with a choice of HDD mounting slots you can easily overcome these minor niggles.
On the whole I like this board. If it does as well as the last board I think I'll be well happy. Hope this has helped you. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

  • Windows 98 and K7N2 Delta?

Is there any compatibility issues I should be aware of if I have Windows 98 installed on a K7N2 delta mobo? I will moving to XP soon enough, but I have to use Win 98 for now. When I insert the driver CD than comes with the mobo, and I am told that the set up does not support my OS. Am I in trouble?

    Even Microsoft doesn't support 98SE anymore...most manufacturers don't either...time for an upgrade...

  • Joysticks and K7N2 Delta ILSR

i'm using an Audigy-2 sound card and windows 98SE, but no joystick are detected if coneccted to the joyport in the sound card.
If i conect at the USB port joysticks are detected.
Even i use another sound card as Live Value same problem happens.
Is there some incompatibility between K7N2 Delta and Analog joysticks ?
Please someone help me, thank you.

    Hi,
Dunno a whole lot about this, but my first suspect would be Win 98SE. Have you tried anything other than an analogue stick in your gameport to see if it's detected? Also try other PCI slots (if you haven't already done so).

  • MSI K7n2 and K7n2 Delta Probelms!!!

I work at a computer store in the central Texas Area. We have been selling and Building computers with msi boards pretty much exclusiveley. When MSI made the change to the Delta K7n2 We recieved 5 bad boards in a row. SOme would not Post at ll. Others would post 1 time and thats it, and others would crash in any 3d ap. I purchased the Original K7n2 And And Currentley running it with a BFG Asylm 5900 Standard and 512 Of PC 2700 Crucial mem. and an XP 2600. I have had no problems until i tried to play command and Conquer Zero Hour. Now after about 20 Minutes the game will crash to the desktop with an unknown error. I switched back to my TI4600 and the same has not happened. I notice that there was a bios flash to fix 5900 Compatability problems. Anyone Still haveing issues. After what i have seen first hand At my store. I will think twice before getting another msi board. We have now begun to cary Gigabyte and Have had no problems.

    darthmayxj,
Try disabling 8X AGP in the BIOS.

  • Tbred multipliers and K7N2-Delta/KT4 Mobos

Do either of these boards unlock all multipliers for Tbred B's?  I know the Abit boards (NF7 and the KT400 bd) do and if the MSI's do not, then I guess I'll be going to Abit for my AthlonXP system...Thanks in advance.

if you're planning on ocing to 200mhz fsb which you probably are then you don't need the higher multipliers unlocked.  just do the wire trick.
i can't really answer your question directly because deltas are barely out.  my kt4v did not unlock the multipliers for my chip.  i know some chips come unlocked ahead of time so maybe try for one of those.
this is unrelated but if you're deciding between a nf2 or kt4 then definately go with the nf2.  the delta ilsr looks like an amazing board and once i get the money it's gonna be my next one.

  • 8xagp and K7N2 delta-ILSR?

disabled fastwrites and 8x worked for awhile :D
    now it don't What's up ?(
    Back to 4x
The guy in the store said bring in the board and we'll check it GREAT
Any one else got any ideas?

No bios flash is gonna help ya there.  Its a hardware problem... so short of sending it to msi it won't be fixed.  I said screw it and returned mine for the gigabyte board.

  • Northbridge temps N/A using CoreCentre - K7N2 Delta Platinum

    Hi folks - first post..........
Seeing as the mobo has a fan speed monitor, does it not have the faclity to monitor the temperature of the Northbridge as well??
It's a new board and the bios is v11.2.
The board locked out on me a couple of days ago after I tried running an XP2600+ Thoroubred at 400FSB - I looked for ages on the web to find a cure then found the way to reset the board to default settings here using the start button/insert key method. Thanks for that!!
I'm now running an XP2500 Barton at 400FSB and my cpu temps are around 29 degrees C using the std retail heatsink. (moitored via CoreCentre). I'm a bit miffed that I can't monitor the Northbridge though....
    Any ideas??
    cheers
    D.

Welcome to the forum. The bios only monitors cpu and system temperatures so Core Center reports accordingly. I am not familiar with bios version 11.2. My board was delivered with version 11.1 but until recently I have been using the B30 or 11.3 bios. You may well find that Live Update will offer you an upgrade to bios version B40 (aka 11.4) until version B50 is released. Resist the temptation as the B40 version has caused stability problems for a number of users.

  • [nForce] K7N2 Delta Platinum built in firewall, advice?

Ok... well how many of you are using this built in firewall?
    I have obtained two versions
Network management tools version 4.57 from the 6.11 package
    and
Network management tools version 4.66 from the 6.37 package
currently I am using zone alarm and I am satisfied but some of the programs I use (dc++) do not like zone alaram
so some od the downloaded files are corrupt (skipping mp3s and corrupted zip files)
to conclude I would like to know are you people that are using this (nforce) firewall satisifed?
and which one should I install?

The firewall uses a technology called SPI, stateful packet inspection.
Every packet that comes in is checked for a few things,
Like your IP address inside the packet. (destination of the packet)
If you IP address is not there then the packet is blocked.
This type of firewall is very secure but unlike software firewalls you do not have
    application filtering.
The SPI firewall allows a program through the firewall or blocks it.
A good software firewall allows the program + you specify the ports for that program.
With the SPI one if you specify a port it will open a hole in the firewall and allow
    anything to come in/out.
Do you see how the software one is more flexible?
Apart from that the firewall does work, I use it with a NAT based firewall in my router.
If you are downloading / using P2p programs the software firewall is much better, The firewall can cause some P2P programs to freeze.
A few people experience terrible problems with the firewall, random crashes/BSODs.
    No one knows why yet.
The nvidia website has a lot of info about the firewall too.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/feature_activearmor.html
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_16451.html
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13034.html
Your one does not have active armour but the firewall is exactly the same.
Now you should check your memory.
The best advice in the world and you choose to ignore it.

  • [nVidia] k7n2 delta2 platinum FSB

I have just bought the following to replace my dead Athlon 1200@1533mhz
    Amd xp 2800+
MSI k7n2 delta platinum (downgraded the bios to v3)
Corsair value dual channel 2*512 DDR
I have overclocked the cpu to 10,5*220 = 2310mhz, but vould rather like to run at a higher FSB eg.: 10*230mhz. This setting is, alasm not stable.
Therefore, how high can you push this motherboard?
What settings have you used to achieve this fsb?
Any advice on running higher fsb?

    Hi
Each overclock is dependent on many variables and not every component will have the capacity of other identical components.
That disclaimer said, the processor may not be able to reach 230mhz since it is a 166fsb processor or you might have to raise the vcore of the processor a notch or two to help it get there.
I have one of those processors running at 12.5 times 188 with 1.675 vcore and folding 24/7.  The motherboard is capable of doing the speed that you want, the components in it may not be able.
Try lowering the fsb and raising the multiplier to see what the limit of the system is.

  • Problems with K7N2 Delta2 Platinum

    Hello!
Just bought new mobo, MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum and I am trying to get it working. My problem: Computer starts OK  but there's no signal from GPU and no diagnose sound (the beeb when the computer starts). No picture nor sound. What should I do? I've tried another Graphics card but it didn't help. Should I jumper the processor somehow?
    Technical specs:
    -AMD Athlon 3000plus
    -MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum
    -1 gig 400Mhz Samsung DDR-RAM
-Antec Sonata case and TruePower 380W Power
    -Ati Radeon X800 Pro GPU
The probelm might be in the PSU's 12V line, because I had a problem plugging it to the mobo. It didn't go to the bottom, I had to put some force for the effort  .
Thanks you all trying to manage this for me

The DLED indicated RAM that is not compatible with nForce. I would still recommend trying nForce Approved RAM to be sure.

ohm. I found it myself already. Are you 100% sure it was the "RAM is not compatible with nForce"-led because there seems to be DDR
400 SAMSUNG 512MB 64M X 64 3 M368L6423ETM-CCC on the list and my memory is labeled M368L6523BTM-CCC so it appears to be quite identic to the one on the list? So many Samsungs on the list, why would my memory do any difference   ?

  • Sata on K7n2 delta (2nd time)

I have once asked this question but I need it explained for the second time.
does K7n2 delta platinum has nforce or promise sata controller?
I have reinstaled my computer too many times and have changed too much
of hardware... but one thing that was allways fast was my SATA Maxtor.
I have recently burned my radeon so i bought a new one and did a format of hdd to do a clean install of xp.
Currently in my device manager I have nVidia MCP2S Serial ATA Compatible Contoller (v2.6). Is there a better driver for this board than nVidias?
I think I have used Promise fasttrak controller earlier or I am imagining I'm not sure but
I think that my hdd was faster.
    Suggestions?

have u gottten the current Nforce drivers 5.10 for XP 32bit
The Unified Driver supports all nForce platform processors. The UDP contains support for all nForce components in a single driver download and installation, making it simple to upgrade to the latest nForce drivers.

  • Serius problem with k7n2 delta 2

I have problems with my k7n2 delta2 does not recognize a AtlonXP 3000+ was working in this plate, doing tests of overclock, when to restart do not work the processor in this plate but,the motherboard (k7n2 delta 2) works with other processors, and processor 3000+ works with other motherboards, but Athlon 3000+ with k7n2 delta 2 does not work together, I tested of everything recover the bios, to update the bios and nothing, dont change to default, I hope that can help me beforehand thankful.

Why do you say Bios doesn't go to default options if with other CPUs Mobo turns on ? You must have in mind that each time you replace the CPU you must Clear CMOS to return to default options, and also you should clean HSF base and CPU die from old thermal grease. At least you know both CPU and Mobo works.
