Athlon xp 2600+ (166mhz) on kt3-ultra2
Hello
on the msi webside there is nowhere mentioned that the athlon xp 2600+ (166mhz) is supported by the kt3-ultra2.
ONly these are mentioned;
Thoroughbred (0.13u) 166/333MHz FSB
AthlonXP 2800+ 166 13 OK
Barton (0.13u) 166/333MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache
AthlonXP 2500+ 166 11 OK
AthlonXP 2800+ 166 12.5 OK
AthlonXP 3000+ 166 13 OK
COuld some one tell me if the 2600+ also works with this mobo??
thank you

Thermal Grease Use Voids AMD Warranty
Quote
For permanent installation AMD only recommends using phase change material with the heatsink/fan. No thermal grease is recommended for anything other than temporary evaluation purposes. And the only thermal grease recommended for that is Shin Etsu G 749. Artic Silver is made up of a matrix with conductive particles. There is the possibility of creating electrical shorts on the package. Any failed processor used w/ Artic Silver or any other thermal grease other than Shin Estu G 749 would be subject to warranty voiding. The concerns with other thermal greases are due to thermal pumpout causing overheating with on off cycling of the PC over time. The above information assumes you are referring to use with Athlon. For Opteron Shin Etsu G 749 also is the only thermal grease recommended for permanent installation. Again the concern is due to pumpout with thermal cycling.

Problem with Athlon XP 2600+ and KT3 Ultra2
My specs:
MSI KT3 Ultra2 w/raid
Athlon XP 2600+ 333fsb
512 mb samsung ram 266mhz
2x 80 gig maxtors
Antec True 480watt
Retail HSF
My problem:
When I put in the cpu, it only read it as being 1250 mhz
What I did:
I looked all over the msi website for information on how to fix this. I hadn't updated my bios, so I upgraded to AMI bios v5.6 because I've heard mixed things on 5.7. It updated fine, so I went into the bios and changed my FSB to 166. At 166, my computer won't even boot to windows, if I put it back down to 133 or 100 it will work fine, otherwise it just restarts before the windows XP loading screen. MY cpu runs 40~44 C
I get blue screens of death if I actually get into windows at all. Outside of windows it seems to run fine if I am at a dos prompt or whatnot.
Anyone think they can help me with this problem? Seems many people have been having some problems with this.nm, I'm an idiot :D
guess I need new ram? -
MSI KT3 Ultra2-CLS and 166Mhz FSB
I own a KT3 Ultra2-CL and a Athlon 1400C.
At the moment it runs 11,5x133 = 1533Mhz. Stable.
It also runs 9x166 = 1500. Stable, but my PCI runs 41Mhz.
So please implement the correct divider in very near future bios update.
It should not be true that customers, who invest less money in a new mainboard than others, can´t use all of the functions the chipset provides. I WANT TO RUN 166Mhz FSB WITH 33Mhz PCI
All of your "expensive" boards provide this divider.
IS THIS MAREKTING 2003???
Best regardsOne AGP slot
- AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) specification compliant
- Supports AGP 2.0 1x/2x/4x
so whats the problem, your fine there

KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) and Barton 2600+
Hello,
I have a MSI KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E).
I recently changed my CPU from AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (Palonimo, FSB 266) to AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton, FSB 333).
I have the latest BIOS - v5.7.
The new CPU (Barton) appers as 2500+ not 2600+.
I read on MSI website that my mainboard supports CPUs up to 3000+ ...
What should I do ?
PS : The CPU is OK, I tried with another one; and YES - the FSB is set to 166.
Thanks in advance,
OJi.You know, we've seen this before with Barton XP2600+ on older KT333 and KT400 MSI boards. Is anyone else using a Barton XP2600+ on an older MSI KT333 or KT400?
I purchased some XP2600+ processors almost a year ago (30 units) that I had been told were the older Thoroughbreds, but 27 of them turned out to be XP2600+ Thortons (AXDC2600DKV3C). Due to the enlongated core size and 256KB cache, they were indeed Thortons. However, the markings on the processor made me suspicious as they had Thoroughbred revision/stepping codes.
So I contacted AMD processor support, which initially told me the processors "looked ok" but that they couldn't be certain. That didn't make me any more comfortable, so after a lengthy process I was finally able to get my case referred to AMD Security Group which investigates remarked processors. It took them three months to get back with me, but I did receive a final determination: AMD never made XP2600 based on Thorton, not even for grey market customers. These were remarked processors. There is a thread over on AMD forums about it.
Upon learning of AMD's conclusion, my supplier took them back, explaining their "Asian" source had assured them they were grey market processors. I also know they had a fairly large quantity, and around the same time, news of AMD remarking operation busts in Taiwan were making headlines.
I'm wondering if MSI has confused the Barton XP2600+ for a Thorton? It would seems so, as AMD claims it never produced an XP2600+ Thorton, for anyone. -
Kt3 Ultra2, problems with 1700+ Thoro CPU at 166Mhz
hi,
Now i have a MSI KT3-Ultra2 mobo rev 1.0 ( 1.0A ) and a AMD XP 1700+ Thoro ( 0.13 ) unloked by defaulf by AMD.
My DDR is NANYA PC333.
My bios rev is 5.6
My CPU is setted at 166x9 and the DDR is not in overclock, but in SPD specifics.
My bios setting are that one in this help:

First time with my bad bios settings, during the windows2000 installation, i had a lot of read-cd rom errors, files don't found, found not certificated Ms ecc...
I changed the bios settings as the giude UP, and i had no more problems during the cd read durind installation, but after that the setup install the network ( 5 or 10 minutes after while finisching windows 2000 installation ) my sistem lock every time
why this ? Is the pcb 1.0A not good with fsb at 166Mhz ?
Please help me....
i heared that for fsb at 166Mhz i need the PCB 1.0a1 is it true ?Hi,

The Thorton, isn't supported, The Tbred. 133 and 166 FSB. are supported, and the Barton 166 FSB are supported. For 166 FSB. CPUs you need to upgrade Bios to ver 5.7 and you need PC 2700 Memory at least, and perhaps a better P.Su.

KT6 Delta/KT3 Ultra2 and MegaRAID SCSI failure
Greetings,
Synopsis:
I have several MSI motherboards and a MegaRAID SCSI 320-2 RAID controller made by LSI Logic. In the older boards (K7D Master and K7T Turbo2), the controller works normally. In the newer boards (KT3 Ultra2 and KT6 Delta), the controller is unable to display its DOS based or "Web" based BIOS.
I have changed numerous settings in the BIOS of the newer boards but nothing seems to allow me to configure the RAID controller. I also found the following link (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=16821&sid=&hilight=SCSI+RAID) to be interesting. Unfortunately, the suggestions therein did not effect a positive change.
Details:
Working boards:
K7D Master Award BIOS W6501MS V1.1 030502 with 2 AMD Athlon MP 2000+ processors, 1 Gig DDR memory.
K7T Turbo2 Award BIOS W6330MS V3.3 121901 with 1 AMD Athlon 1200, 512 Meg of SDRAM.
Non-working boards:
KT3 Ultra2 AMI BIOS A6380VMS V5.5 071002 with 1 AMD Athlon XP 2100+, 1 Gig DDR 333 MHz memory. PS actual reading: +5=5.030, +12=12.228, -12=-12.071, -5=-5.026. Single 450Watt PS.
KT6 Delta AMI BIOS A6590VMS V5.5 021004 with 1 AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 1.5 Gig DDR 400 MHz memory. PS actual reading: +5=5.278, +12=12.045, -12=-12.400, -5=-5.277. Dual 450Watt PS.
The non-working boards work normally without the RAID controller. In fact, they seem to work normally with the RAID controller save that they do not allow the RAID controller to enter configuration mode. They report that - will be executed at the end of POST but they just go to a boot attempt off the floppy drive.
These same systems (the last two) also do not work with an AMI Enterprise 1400 RAID controller BIOS ver. 1.48 (latest version) or an LSI Logic made Mylex controller.
Any suggestions on configuration changes, etc. that would allow these RAID controllers to work in the aforementioned motherboards would be greatly appreciated. Further information available if needed.
-Motherboard type and model: See above.
-Bios type and revision: See above.
-CPU type and model: See above.
-Memory name, model and quantity: See above and seemingly irrelevant.
-Video card: AGP based, but all different.
-Power Supply: See above.
-Hard Drives: Seemingly irrelevant as none are hooked up.
-Operating system and service pack level: Seemingly irrelevant as no OS is installed.I feel your pain buddy !!! it's the same thing for me. I just got a LSI-22320 and I going through the same troubles. I was really looking forward to having this nice card in my system, only to find out it would not even let the system boot. I took the card out and pluged it in my Mom's older than dirt computer and IT WORKS !!... This was a very disapointing experience to say the least....
Well, if you do here something good, please let me know...
P.S. Your SCSI-brother in pain :

My answer is no to the kt3 ultra 2 only -
AMD says MSI KT3 Ultra2 will support 166 MHz FSB
Here's the link:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_182_869_4348^4378|123_1_XP,00.html
What's really interesting to me here is that apparently bios version 5.7 , with an AMD-reported release date of 10/23/02, is what will actually allow the KT3 Ultra2 to support the 166MHz FSB.
It looks very much to me as if the KT3 Ultra and the KT3 Ultra2's not only share the same model number but also the same bioses as well.
What would prevent bios 5.7, when MSI releases it to the public, from supporting a 166MHz fsb in the KT3-U's as well as the the KT3-U2's?Quote

Thanks for the link, Wonk... I had actually read through that thread and kind of came away with the impression that although MSI said the KT3 U would not support a 166MHz FSB, nobody was really sure enough about that to place bets on it...
Anyway, I only ran across this info on the AMD site last night--apparently it's new info, and runs in tandem with a rumor over on the Inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=6032
which states that AMD is going to announce 166MHz FSB 2600's tomorrow--and if not tomorrow then shortly before Comdex. I have to admit this info on the AMD site lends some credence to the idea.
What's interesting to me as well is that on this same list the KT4 Ultra is not listed as supporting the 166MHz fsb 2600 +, at least with its present bios.

KT3 Ultra2 On-board Sound - Scratchy
The on-board AC97 sound works but the output sounds scratchy, with lots of background noise (like an old record). Sound has poor quality whether from CD, DVD, MP3, or WAV. It's not my speakers as they work fine on another system and the problem also happens with headphones. System/drivers as follows:
Motherboard: MSI KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E v.1.0)
BIOS: AMI A6380VMS V5.5
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+
RAM: 256 MB Kingston PC2700
HD: Maxtor 60 GB 6Y060L0
DVD: Lite-On LTD163D (16X)
CD-RW: Sony CRX140E
ZIP: ATAPI 100 MB
Video: Radeon 8500LE 64MB
P/S: Antec SL300S (300W)
Modem and network cards also installed
Windows XP Home edition vers 5.1 build 2600
VIA 4-in-1 drivers vers. 4.42
Realtek AC'97 audio driver vers. 5.10.0.4070
On-board sound enabled in BIOS
No sound card installed
I have a similar problem with mine, but it doesn't show up immediately.
When I play UT for example, the sound is excellent, but after 30mins or so the quality drops right off & sounds like gravel gargling water.
Very strange?
If I save the game, exit & go back in it is fine.
Are there some updated drivers for the Realtek Avance chip in the KT3?

USB 2.0 Issues with KT3 Ultra2 6380E
Windows XP SP1
Bios: American Megatrends Inc. 07.00T
Hi I was wondering if someone could help me?
My machine has six USB ports. (1&2) Two ports are
installed on the motherboard, and my users guide says
they are legacy ports. (3&4) two ports are installed
on the d-bracket 2 connector: JLED, connected to
JUSB2, these are what I believe to be my only 2 USB2.0
ports. (4&6)Finally 2 ports are connected via JUSB3 to
the front panel of my Antec case. I think the front
panel of my case has 1.1 connectors so it is
essentially a 1.1 port.
I am having some difficulty getting my USB ports to
function properly with a USB 2.0 Buslink hard drive
UII-40 72E. I suspect there is some IRQ conflict.
Trying to alleviate this I disabled all the device
drivers I suspected might cause this in the device
manager in safe mode. I then removed from the device
manager all the USB (2.0 and 1.1) root hubs, and after
that their host controllers. I then booted to VGA
mode (thinking this should disable the video card
drivers??) and exported this IRQ info from my sys info
after the USB host controllers are reinstalled:
Resource Device Status
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 11 RADEON 8500 SERIES OK
IRQ 21 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host
Controller OK
IRQ 21 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host
Controller OK
IRQ 21 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host
Controller OK
IRQ 21 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller OK
IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2
Keyboard OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
Next I attempt to (already plugged into D-Bracket
port) power on my buslink USB 2.0 hard drive. As soon
as I do the machine immediately goes to a blue screen.
No messages given but numbers are shown. I have screen
shots taking with my digital camera. I then returned
to safe mode, remove the USB drivers as I did before,
and boot to VGA mode. Once the USB drivers have been
restored I attempt to power on the bus link hard drive
this time plugged into the onboard legacy ports. I
can I get another blue screen this time including a
message "IRQL not less or equal", again I have taken
screen shots with my digital camera.I then returned to
safe mode, remove the USB drivers as I did before, and
boot to VGA mode. Once the USB drivers have been
restored I attempt to power on the bus link hard drive
this time plugged into the front panel USB ports
(4&6). When I power it on Windows XP warns me that I
have a high-speed USB device plugged into a non
high-speed USB hub. But I receive no error messages.
However I do not exceed the drive through "my
computer". I go through the add hardware wizard to try
and at the drive manually and it says the device is
working properly. Still I do not see the drive.
Finally I tried installing a Buslink USB 2.0 PCI card
after the above steps. I then returned to safe mode,
remove the USB drivers as I did before, and boot to
VGA mode. Once the USB drivers have been restored I
attempt to power on the bus link hard drive this time
plugged into the PCI card. The drive seems to be
recognized automatically by Windows XP however my
system slows to a crawl trying to access any hard
drive. When I try and access the USB 2.0 hard drive I
get a message something to the effect of "(the drive
letter) not being recognizable".
Any ideas on what could be causing this? The same
Buslink hard drive works great at work on my Windows
2000 machine plugged into the same PCI card using the same USB cable and power supply. Would any other information be useful?
Thanks!
andrew

Operating systems support: Windows® 98/98SE Windows® Me Windows® 2000 Windows® XP Model#: RADEON 8500le 128M –I first tried installing the VIA4in1 and VIA USB2.0 patch. Then I tried the D-bracket after refreshing the usb drivers (I did not disable all other devices like in my original post, should I have?). Same result, blue screen crash at power on.
Next I disable USB ports in BIOS and install USB PCI card. Then power on the USB HD plugged into card. Same result. Computer slow accessing local drives. When I try to access the USB drive I get a "E:/ is not accessible; the file or data is corrupted or unreadable."
Next I remove the USB card. I enter BIOS and set to "2" ports. Presumably this turns on the USB1.1 ports on the mobo. I return to windows xp. It now seems to install the drivers, but just as it finishes I get a "a problem has been encountered instaaling this device (it has done this before but after finishing I get the blue screen most times). Next I goto the device manager, and in my USB devices I have a USB mass storage device w/ a yellow flag. I goto properties and see a:
"the device cannot start (code 10)" device status. I click "troubleshoot" and voila... blue screen.
Finally I reboot, and set 4 ports in BIOS, making my JUSB3 FRONT PANEL usb1.1? ports active. Interestingly these respond like the PCI card. Computer slow accessing local drives. When I try to access the USB drive I get a "E:/ is not accessible; the file or data is corrupted or unreadable." As soon as I power off the USB HD things are normal...
I will take this USB HD to work tomorrow just to ensure its integrity. Any other ideas? What kinds of BIOS settings might F up USB?

Problems w/ KT3 Ultra2 w/R
I think the best thing to do it's to explain the problem from the beginning.
A couple of months ago I bought my computer by components and put it togheter myself. Everything was fine, but there was a problem. Back then, my mobo was an ABIT KX7333R and it wouldn't boot if I changed the processor speed in the bios (it booted allright with the defalut -XP 1500- but when changed it to the real one -XP 2000- it didn't boot at all). So I used it for about 3 weeks with the default setting (I was too lazy at that moment to change the damn thing) and one night, the computer died while I was using it. Anyway, I assumed twas the mobo, so I requested a RMA from Abit, and had my motherboard replaced. The replacement worked fine for about 10 minutes, and when I was writing an email, puff, died again. At that time I was swearing and cursing, and blamed Abit. By then, I was tired of waiting and everything (just got stressed) so I ordered an MSI KT3 Ultra2 with raid. When I first booted the PC, the motherboard didn't recognized my HDD when I entered the Bios. I tried restarting, but the pc would not respond. So I checked the D-Bracket lights and they say that the problem was in the IDE controller or device. So I replaced my HDD with another one, but nothing happened.
So, my questions are:
1- Am I the guy with the worst luck in the world and got three defective motherboards in a row?
2- Could it be that something else in my PC is causing the problem?
If you have any questions, please post it here and I'll answer them. Here it's my computer components:
Athlon XP 2000
MSI KT3 Ultra2
Gainward GF4 TI4200
SB Audigy Gamer
3COM Ethernet card
Corsair XMS PC2700 512MB (Silver heatspreader)
Turbolink 420W PS
Lite-On CDRW
PS: Sorry for the length...Have you tried with another CPU ? If not, please do so ; or return the CPU for RMA.

KT3 Ultra2 hangs during POST - Memory Detection
System specs:
KT3 Ultra2
Athlon XP 1900+
GeForce4 Ti4200
PC2700 512MB RAM non-ECC
***Nothing else connected***
The system only passes POST after clearing CMOS. When I load the default BIOS settings, the system hangs when it gets to the Memory Detection step of POST. I have tried different memory sticks and even motherboards with the same results. This seems to be a BIOS settings issue. Any Ideas???I have tried 2. Mushkin (Samsung chips) with a heat sink. The other was oem and the chips are also Samsung. Same problem with both.
The Mushkin works fine in another system. -
KT3-Ultra2-CE not shutting down!
I have a fresh install of WinXP(no service pks or updates). when I go to shutdown, the pc just restarts! I reformatted the HD, updated the bios to ver. 5.7. Reinstalled the WinXP and it still does the same thing!!
KT3 Ultra2-CE
AMD Athlon XP2400+
DDR pc2100 256 MB non-ECC ram
Asus 32MB video
Intel pro 100+ nicThanks all!
found the answer on the Forum after much search.
fix: disable all in the Wake on LAN settings in the BIOS.
Why is there so much problems with MSI motherboards? I've never had any problems with Asus, Gigabyte or Intel MB? While searching for my answer I see lots of problems with MSI mb. Makes me not want to buy any MSI products. ?( -
I have already read Bas' post about the common problems but still, my own problem can't be solved. I hope you guys could help me. Here's the problem:
Specs: KT3 Ultra2 BR/2 x Kingmax 256 MB DDR333 RAM/AthlonXP 2000+
I know that the default fsb is 100. The system reaches POST at 100 fsb. Now, if I use that fsb, my athlon xp is almost worthless. Everytime I try to set the fsb at 133 and saves the CMOS setup, the system couldn't even initialize the VGA card and won't even reach POST. The LEDs tell me that the problems are with the memory modules. I hope you people can help me because I can't use my system until this is solved. Thank you and more power to you.Quote

Could you prove it was 2100? If so, I would have taken it back and shoved it up........ Sorry, got carried away. I would have dobbed the retailer in to the authorities for misrepresentation or fraud.
