[Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FSR / Early Chipset Initialization

Hi There,
My MSI K8N Neo Platinum has a broken LAN interface, i don't have the papers of it so I can't send it for RMA. So i bought a MSI K8T Neo FSR.
But there is a problem, when i power up the system, the fans are spinning, the hard disk spins up and the CDRW/DVDROM drives are working. The only thing the system does is hanging at the "Early Chipset Initialization" state accoding to the D-Bracket.
- Tried an other VGA Card > No result (Radeon 9200, Club3D)
- Bought other memory (I do have 1GB now , but still no result)
- Tried resetting the BIOS > No result
- Tried removing the RAM, the system beeps there's no RAM in the system, but when i put it back in the system wouldn't boot again.
- Tried to boot up only with R9200, CPU and RAM, and still it won't work.
- Tried to boot outside the case, but still no result.
I tried my processor, memory, PSU and vga card (6800LE) back in my K8N system and it works great, so i don't think my PSU is too weak.
And I aint thinking that my motherboard is broke, it still beeps without memory in it.
I am getting really confused, i'm out of money now so i can't buy some new stuff.
Anyone ideas?
Specs in signature. (PSU 18A @ 12V), sorry for my bad english.

Why don't you get a PCI network card for the K8N system?  No need to fuss around with a new mb just to get a LAN connection.
Don't want to use PCI-Cards

Have you tried removing the RAM and then doing a Bios reset? Sometimes things get sticky if the RAM is still in place during a Bios reset.
I would also unplug anything that is not entirely needed to boot so you can simplify the problem.
Another hint. As the RAM controller is inside the CPU the system will not do anything right without RAM. The CPU will imediately hang.
Just tried a BIOS reset without RAM in the system, the system won't boot. Only the CPU, VGA card and the memory is placed. Only the 4pin 12v and the 20 pin is connected.
It just won't work, maybe the board is dead?

    Hi.
I´m writing you because i have a problem with an MSI K8t-Neo FSR.
    The description of my PC:
    MSI K8t-Neo FSR
    AMD 64bits 3200 (640 cache)
    HD 160 SATA Seagate Barracuda
    1gb DDR 400mhz
    Floppy 3 1/2
    CDRW 52x32x52 LG
    Video ATI RADEON 9600 XT
    The problem is the following:
When I try to install Windows XP, when I press F8 to accept the Terms, it shows me an error message (IO 104 i think) and it hangs up or reboot.
I tried with another two Proccessors and motherboards (same model obviously) but it didn´t work.
Could it be a defectuous production serie of that model????
Or what do you think the problem is????
Thank you very much for your help.
I´ll be waiting for your answer!
    Lucas Revale
PF: I´ve already tried updating the BIOS.

Thank you all for trying to help me!!!
I've already tried using only te necesary drivers.
I´ve also tried another VGA, another HD, another CDRW, another power supply, and an AMD 64 2800+.
It seems to be that the three motherboards i tried were defectous.
Does anyone has any other idea?!?!?
    I´d really aprecciate your help!

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T NEO-V : incompatibility with ATI RADEON 9800 PRO

    Hi,
I read all the subjets on this forum about Radeon problems with MSI K8T NEO motherboard.  Most of the peple can't use their graphic card in all situations.
    My PC is :
    -MSI K8T NEO-V
    -AMD-64 3200
    -Power : 400W
    -ATI RADEON 9800 PRO
-1 Go DDRAM (2x512 in single channel)
    -Hercules Digifires 7.1
    I bought a new MSI K8T NEO-V with AMD 64.
The problem is that I can't use the computer in the games with AGP 8X even if I try to enable-disable all the options possibles in BIOS and Windows (fast write ...) : The computer freeze (screen disapear as if there was no video signal), reboot or return to Windows disabling the accelerated mode.
But in AGP 4X, all the game run without problem with all setups of BIOS !!!
I tried all the drivers (the new and the old drivers).  Even if all are updated, it freeze.
There are no BIOS update for my motherboard. I saw that some people had BIOS update for compatibility with some Radeon cards ...
So, I don't know how to repair the problem because AGP 8X is AGP 8X and not 4X, and my Radeon run fine on other computer, and nothing say that Radeon 9800 pro don't run on this motherboard.
Does someone have the solution to make it work ? Does a new BIOS or driver update exist somewhere for Radeon cards ?

What Bas said about 30+ amps on the 12v rail does have merit. Even if you don't use it now there may come a time when you want to upgrade the system and certainly you won't want to buy yet another PSU then. A High end vid card now takes almost as much as the CPU to operate. Now days the 12v rail is the most important. Past systems regulated everything off the 5v railk and 12v was used mostly for powering drive motors. Now though the MB's use the 12v line to regulate all the voltages for the CPU, Chipset and other features as does the Vid cards. 3.3 volt lines are used for memory so we hardly use any 5v nowdays.
You have an older viod card and that does not eat much 12v but if you upgrade the most likely peice will be the vid card. You could go through this whole thing all over again if you are not careful to plan for that now with a new PSU purchase.
If the computer shop gives you a bunch of bull about power needs havbe them stop by the forum and we can help set them straight on this. There is more than enough data from MSI and historical data here that suggests that 16a on the 12v rail is certainly not enough. Hey I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just trying to help you get it right. The computer shop is the one trying to sell you something we just feel they are selling the wrong junk.

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FIS2R BIOS Update when? CnQ no workie!

    The MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702) hasn't had a BIOS update since 3-4-2005!
I put a Sempron 64 3000+ in my motherboard, and was very disappointed that it is recognized as an "AMD Unknown Processor".  Sure, it works, but one of the reasons I bought it is in the hopes of getting AMD Cool n Quiet to work.  However, apparently the AMD driver can't recognize the CPU due to the old BIOS on the motherboard.
Every other MSI skt 754 board supports Sempron E6 revision already.  Why not the K8T Neo FIS2R?  Where have all the MSI BIOS programmers gone?  I have been waiting 2-months for a BIOS update to support the E6 Semprons.  I have asked and begged MSI Tech Support.  I am tempted to switch to ASUS or some other company that is actually timely with BIOS updates.  Only reason I haven't yet, is this board is everything I want EXCEPT for Cool n Quiet not working.  It's starting to look like there is no BIOS update in sight, so I am very disappointed.
Anyone here work for MSI can confirm there are no plans for a BIOS update?  Because I don't want to wait around for something that's not going to happen.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply I thought the mods here are MSI staff... I was just kind of hoping there's MSI staff lurking here, seeing what people think of their products or seeing what people complain about.
No, pretty much C 'n Q is the only reason I'm disappointed, but it was something I was really set on getting to work since this is a server that's up 24/7, but isn't utilized but maybe 4hrs out of a given day.  I could reduce frequency and voltage, but unlike C 'n Q, it won't automatically increase speed and voltage based on demand - which is something I want since although it's a server, I also use it as a regular PC as well.
I've even tried the 2.33 beta BIOS with no change, and even found a 5.52 BIOS in their BIOS testing directory.  I guess that BIOS was for a different kind of 6702, although I had pulled out the peripheral modules with AMI's MMTOOL and they looked the same as the existing BIOS, but that BIOS killed my motherboard so it couldn't have been for a regular 6702.  I had to desolder the BIOS chip with a heat gun, reprogram the old BIOS back on it with an EPROM programmer, and solder in a socket.  I guess that shows my dedication to get C 'n Q working!

  • MSI K8T NEO-FSR, reporting CPU @ 50c~ at bootup?

Hello, I just replaced my Asus K8V SE Deluxe with a K8T Neo-FSR because of some RAM issues with the Asus, RAM is sorted out fine now with the K8T, at first with the Asus, I was using the stock HSF with the stock thermal compound on it, when I transferred it over to the K8T, I put some Arctic Silver 5, when I booted up, it was reading the CPU (Idle) at around 50c, when before with the Asus I was getting around 36c readings, why is this? I reapplied the arctic silver 5 thinking that was the issue, but it is still the same..anyone know if this is a bug or what? I touch the heatsink, and it's not even WARM..
Btw, my CPU is a Athlon 64 3000+

    weird..how bout on load?

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R early chipset init. hang-up; won`t POST

I`m new to forums (participating anyway) and also new to self-builds; this is my first so please be gentle with me! but am very impressed with the help you people give each other, and that is what I seem to need. I have studied this forum extensively and so am aware of the PSU/RAM pattern of problems associated with this board - am I in the same boat?
Having connected everything up I switched on and the D-bracket is giving me 3 red lights and 1 green(top left; position 1) indicating `early chipset initialization`. The monitor remains totally blank (tested on my ancient wind-up PC and works great), and there are no beeps to be heard, but all fans work and LEDs too, and the drives can be heard and seen  to power up. The manual for the board lists the diagnostics for the D-bracket in what appears to be a sequential order, so it seems that I have passed the 4 red lights problem that so many of you are having/have faced. Can I assume(dangerous word that) that my CPU is properly loaded and functional as the manual suggests (if indeed the D-bracket diagnostics are carried out in this sequential manner)?
I have tried to run the board with just CPU 4-pin(JPW1)supply, heat sink fan(CFAN1)supply, 20-pin board supply, graphics card slotted in and powered up, D-bracket connected and power switch(case) connected, with all combinations of just 1 or both sticks of RAM, in all computations of DR DIMMS 1-3, and get the same hang up at the D-bracket. I cleared CMOS before trying the above as well.
Do I need to do anything to the Maxtor drives at this early stage - they came with no instructions or anything? The board is clear of the metal chassis, held aloft by the 9 clips supplied (no plastic washers supplied though? but the metal eyelets are clear of any routing on the board so I assume(that word again) that washers are no longer necessary/supplied). While working on the board I was earthed to the radiator behind me, and I did not touch the surface at all. The PSU specs seem to be within the parameters that you indicate are necessary, and the brand seems to be respectable. The OCZ RAM seems to also be of the necessary standard and type, although I don`t see the exact same RAM anywhere on this forum, unless it is just described as OCZ PC3200 256MB EL, which I have seen several times.
So over to you folks - sorry for the length of this thread, but how else can I tell you what I`ve done!!. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to get this board running;it sounds like once these initial problems are (hopefully) addressed, it is a super bit of kit, so I ain`t giving up without a fight - I think I`ve tried everything mentioned in earlier threads that may resolve this, other than start on the `buy a different PSU/RAM ` road!

Officially - as I've just researched the AMD website, here's what AMD has to say about RAM:
    MEMORY SUPPORTED
    PC1600, PC2100, PC2700 & PC3200 unbuffered memory modules
    184-pin 2.5 volt
I've heard of others running PC3500 and higher, but question the effectiveness of running these modules. As earlier posts by Jocko indicate, running some inexpensive PC3200 sticks seem to have no problems with early chipset initialization. HOWEVER - just yesterday I went to a local retailer to check on 1gig modules, and the prices have jumped $20 or more per memory stick. I then went to NewEgg and checked on their prices and found that memory I paid $88 for is now $108 per stick

  • Msi k8t neo fsr bios help

ive been searching and searching and cant find where to change the multiplier.... i was hoping maybe you guys now where it is or a way to change it i have a athlon 64 3200+ but i want to lower the multi to 9, any ideas

Sorry, I did not read your MB ID correctly.  According to MSI website, the K8T Nero series does not have the Cell menu.  There may be some 3rd party software that will allow you to change your settings but I am not familiar with any.

  • MSI K8T Neo-FSR - reassure me!

Ive just ordered this board and a AMD64 3000 with 1GB Geil ram, and ive been browsing these pages to check how to set everything up when it arrives. However, reading all the threads at the moment i have to admit that im alittle worried about all the problems that people are having!
Could someone reassure me at all about this board or am i destined to have problems? I know theres a sticky at the top about setting up this series for board but could someone go through the real basics. I wont be overclocking and dont want to update the bios lots of times unless i have to!
    Thanks in advance
    Kev

Well, this system is going fast, quiet & stable at the moment. A real joy to use.
    Tips for setting up?
    1. Pop your RAM in DIMM1 & DIMM2 (best performance according to the manual)
    2. If you've got a SATA drive, use the VIA interface, not the promise. I wouldn't bother with RAID, personally. But then, I bought a FX5200...
    3. If you don't plug a drive into the promise SATA you'll get a bios message saying something like BIOS not loaded. No worries, its just the promise bios. Get rid of the message by disabling the promise chip in bios.
    4. Disable the MSI logo on startup, (bios setting), then you'll be able to see what's going on during bootup. (Anyone know how to replace this logo with your own image?)
    5.  I'm running with all auto performance settings as the bios came from the shop, works well.
    6. Plug in the shipped dbracket and watch the status leds as she comes up. Should be no problems, and thereafter you can use the extra USBs that come on it. I like the lights anyway (OK, they're facing the wall, but I know they're there...)
    7. Expect to see corecenter temps of 50C at idle with the stock 1.2-1.7 bios.
    8. If you want cool'n'quiet you need at least the amd cpu driver (although XP SP2 may have it native) c'n'q enabled in the bios and control panel/power options/minimal power management. I also needed to update the bios to 1.6 to get c'n'q working properly with my newcastle. Hopefully 1.8 will be ready by the time you need it.
    9. Download cpuz from http://www.cpuid.com, it'll show you the inner details of your CPU and your memory timings. PCWizard is quite neat from this site too.
    10. Bios update through MSI liveupdate in windows if you need to. Have a floppy handy to create a backup of your old bios. It'll hold your hand through the rest. After bios update, reboot and enter the bios to re-key your wiped settings.
    All the best.

  • Msi k8t neo fsr won't post

OK...I put the system in my sig together and turned on the machine. Went straight into the bios to tweak stuff like I wanted to. 1st off, my cd burner and my hdd were not detected. I made a mental note of that and kept on browsing through. I was at the screen that gives the current temperature (which was hovering from 34C-35C) and then outta no where the thing dies. Now, the power led on the front of the case flashes long slow flashes. I turned the psu off, then turned it on and tried to boot. I can hear a faint whine as the hdd led comes on, then it goes silent and the green power led starts flashing again. I disconnected my two case fans and front case leds (not the power and hdd leds) and tried it again thinking it was the psu. Same thing as before.  I moved cmos jumper to clear for ten minutes and then moved it back. I tried to start it back up, the fan on the processor spun for about a second, heard the faint beep, then nothing w/ the power led doing the slow contunuous flashing thing. Anyone know what's going on?

I took the ram out, cleared CMOS for about 40 minutes, put CMOS jumper back, and then put the ram back.  I turned the comp on and actually got some signal to the monitor b/c it temporarily turned on for about 3 seconds(though no picture came up), then it turned off and the flashing power led began.  Sounds like the ram may indeed be the prime suspect.  BTW, do any of you have a stick of ram I could borrow (lol)?  I called two computer stores and asked if they could put a stick of ram they had laying around and see if it posted.  One of them asked if I was going to buy their ram if it worked and I said no, b/c I would just RMA the ram I already bought.   They said it would cost about $15.  I called one more store and they said it would $45!  WTC, I can buy my own stick at newegg for $24!
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-209-013&catalog=147&depa=0
Any final thoughts b4 I package this stuff up?  I'm now contemplating sending the processor, ram, and mobo back.

  • Sata drivers on msi k8t neo fsr

I read the instructions on how to install the drivers using the via sata controller.  I go to install windows xp home and hit f6 to install other drivers throw in the floppy with the via drivers(the one that comes with the mobo)  It sees the hard drive and then goes to install and says cant copy viaraid.sys and 2 other files.  If I hit esc to skip this it goes ahead and copies the rest of the files over, and when it goes to restart the computer I pull out the floppy and it restarts to a blue screen that says to uninstall new hard disks or run checkdisk.  If anyone could give me a solution to this problem it would save me a few gray hairs

Oh that might actually help currently I have 2 dvd drives hooked up.  I am going to try xp pro and a new sata cable just to make sure that we have all of the bases covered if this doesn't work I am going to take back the hard drive and try another one

  • Sempron 64 3000 on MSI MB K8T NEO - FSR

I have a problem with MB MSI K8T NEO - FSR. When I put on CPU Sempron 2600 SDA2600AIO2BA, it works fine and the MB detect it fine,
but when I put on CPU Sempron 64 3000 SDA3000AIO2BX, the MB not recognize the new processor and reports AMD Unknown Processor.
I have the latest BIOS on the mainboard, but the problem remains. Can someone help me who had the same problem?

Cool and Quiet for one. C&Q is not working from my understanding on the Semperon 64's ATM. There is also a fix shown by one other gentleman here in this forum area about removing a file that is associated with C&Q functions. CPUSlowdown or some such. I don't have a Semperon 64 so I can not confirm this though.

  • K8T Neo FSR DOA

I am helping a new builder with an upgrade from a working system.  We installed a K8T Neo FSR and AMD 2800 Retail  in an existing, working system system.  The current specs are:
    WIndows XP Home (all patches)
    MSI K8T Neo FSR MB
    AMD 64 2800 Retail CPU
1024 Meg Super Talent PC 3200 memory (512x2)
    80 M WD HD
    Liteon CR-RW/DVD reader
    HEC 525 PA ( 3.3V-35A, 12V-18A,5V-14A,)
    Nvidiia 5700LE video
Since installing the upgrade the system will not initialize.  Sometimes the fans (case and CPU) spin for about 1 second and then shut down and at other times nothing happens at all.  I have read the posts about JBAT1 and found it to be apparently misconfigured (two pins nearest the DIMM were connected).  When reconfigured (pins farthest from DIMMS connected) nothing at all happens at boot up.  I have limited experience with 754 MBs but lengthy experience with K7 on various platforms.
    Questions:
The diiagnostic LEDs on the D-Bracket do not light, what does this imply?
Although I have had good previous experience with HEC PS, is it likely that it does not have sufficient 12V current to start the board?  Does this board/CPU combo reallly need 20A plus of 12V to initialize as some posts seem to indicate?
Does the lack of diagnostic readout imply failure of either the MB or CPU?  If yes, how do I identify which?
I have tried all the usual stuff (running with only one memory stick in slot 1, reseating CPU/looking for bent pins, memory and video reseating and checking all connections).  The board appears properly installed on stanchions.  How to troubleshoot a shorted MB?
I have another PS (an Antec True Power 430) but haven't tried it yet.  Is there a FAQ to help troubleshoot a situation like this? ( yes I have browsed the forum but maybe am not bright enough to find the right section)
    All ideas are welcomed.
    Joe

I am getting nowhere with this fast.  As per the previous suggestion I insulated the board from the standoffs with cardboard and retried again.  Same thing, fans spin for perhaps one second and then nothing.  The D-Bracket never lights.  I then pulled an Antec Tru-Power 430 from another working system and tried again, same thing.  I think this motherboard has failed.  Before I request an RMA anything that I might have missed?
System spec (not the same as my signature which is another MSI machine)
AMD 2800 754 CPU and retail HSF
    MSI K8T Neo FSR MB
2x512 Super Talent PC 3200 memory
    HEC 475 PS (3.3V 35A, 5V 41A 12V 18A)
    WD 80G HD
    Nvidia 5700 LE graphics
    Liteon CD/RW-DVD
    lots of case fans
This board was purchased by the young builder from Newegg who I gather no longer supports RMAs on motherboards.  Any comments on RMA service through MSI? I found the link on the website but haven't helped him complet it yet.
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • K8T NEO FSR problems and questions.

I read this in an article on http://www.hardware.no:
"MSI is one of the companies that offer free upgrade to a new motherboard with better
specifications, if you have bought 915P Neo2 Platinum, 915P Combo-FR or 915G Combo FR
in the period of time between 21st and 27th june."
Late in june, I bought myself  MSI K8T Neo-FSR motherboard, and an Athlon 64 3200+2.2GHz.
When I run "Core Center", the program shows that my CPU idle temp is 60 Celsius and my
sys temp is 36 degrees, which is COMPLETELY wrong?!?!.
This is very weird, because I have a nice computer case with 5 fans that blow out all
the warm air inside. When I play games, the CPU goes up to 65 degrees and my computer
restarts. This is VERY annoying. How do you turn this off in BIOS settings?
I'm quite frustrated with the thought that my CPU temp. shows 60-70 Celsius.
I have read tons of other forums and I have found out that it's not only me that experience
this problem. I seriously hope that you will fix this bug ASAP.
Does this offer also apply to K8T NEO-FSR? Can I get a free upgrade?
If I don't get my problems fixed, I will take further actions.
    My System specifications:
MSI K8T NEO-FSR, Athlon 64 3200+2.2GHz, Asus Geforce 4 Ti 4400, TwinMOS 1024 DDR3200 RAM, Western digital 80+120+80 GB 7200 RPM, Chieftec BX Tower BX-03SL-SL-SL P4 / AMD, 2x papst 120mm fans, 2x 80mm papst fans, 1 fan in the door of the computer case.

I never heard MSI was doing such an offer...
Anyway, you need the latest BIOS, that solves the temps reading thing, this happens because AMD changed the CPU a bit.
It's not getting that hot, it's just a reading failure.
A BIOS flash should solve it.

  • MSI K8t-Neo Revisited

    Hello again all,
I promised to repost once I had my machine in proper working order (I had the no posting error like a lot of others!)
With all hope lost, I RMA'd my merchandise, and recieved two BRAND NEW parts (thanks newegg!) apparently they were both trashed. In order to not repeat this error, I also purchased a new enermax 465 PSU (33A@+12V) and everything is running as smooth as silk.
I probably didnt need to return my mobo and CPU, but nevertheless, it all works now.
THanks for all your suggestions once again.
also - a note to MSI......
There seems to be somewhat of a design flaw on the MSI-K8t NEO FSR. The placement of two capacitors on the board will not allow you to EASILY install a standard AMD 64 retail heatsink. After attaching the heatsink to the mounting bracket on the side closer to the center of the board, the safety retention clip (big plastic thing on my heatsink) would not close onto its latch without some finesse. There are two large capacitors that block its path.

on both my A64 boards, i mounted the heatsink the other way..that's the way i've seen it in most pics including the manual i believe..if you mount the retention mechanism facing the outside edge of the board, there should be no issue clearing caps, so..it's not a design flaw:) just not as clearly pointed out in the manual as it could be...i suspect that they thought common sense would dictate retension clip goes to the outside edge as other amd heatsinks (with old clips) were generally expected to be mounted that way..less change of damage to the board if the screwdriver slipped on the clip by the edge..i just looked at the manual on how to install the hs and it shows quite clearly that the retention mechanism should be fastened on the outside edge:)
