[Athlon64] RS480M2 v3.4 BIOS

Anyone try it yet?
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=639&kind=1
Its also at http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp   but this isn't a static link.
I'll have a report by tomorrow on my results with it.
-jonatj

Well it didn't blow my system up.
Sept1967 is correct the version 3.4 update adds:
Firewire - Enable/Disable
NIC - Enable/Disable
removes fan controller hex values, you can just specify High, Med, Low temps.
It also removes the DRAM config option for Continuous, whatever that did.
I haven't check any CAS timings, but I'd also like to determine if the USB2 rebooting problem has been straightened out.
Overall, I think they just streamlined the options a little and removed stuff that wasn't working right anyway. There are some new drivers that have been posted for the ATI Xpress chipset too. I've got those installed and no problems yet. I'm still using the Realtek NIC drivers from MS Windows. But IGP, Audio, SMBus, etc has been updated with no issues.
Oh, the one thing I did notice is that PC Alert 4 is now broken. It did report the correct temps before I upgraded the BIOS and ATI drivers. I'm not sure which upgrade broke it, but now its showing my board temps at 146 C or something crazy like that.
Let's keep posting our findings.

  • [Athlon64] RS480M2-IL with nVidia GF 6800 giving problems

Ok so, I bought and contructed my rig and got everything to post, installed win xp pro, all the drivers, flashed a bios update and everything was going good. I installed Battlefield 2 and was about 5 minutes into the game when it froze on me. I'm not sure why this is, but I have isolated that it has to be a graphics problem, since I have tested my ram, made sure the fan controll was disabled and my cpu was remaining cool enough to run (which it was). So, I can't really see it being anything else. I reinstalled the nVidia drivers, still same problem. It happened when I tired to play Half-life 2 and doom 3 so... any suggestions?

I am not sure how related this is but I have a very similar problem. I have MSI 6800 256Meg and RS480M2 board. 3DMark05 freezes in the first test.
My PSU is fine since it runs a much more power hungry system that the one I built with RS480.
Right now I have RS480+2Gigs ram (tried with 1 Gig, no difference), MSI 6800 256, and a hard drive.
Prime 95 goes on for hours with no problems. The videocard works just fine in a different machine.
So far I tried all kinds of BIOS settings, got the latest drivers for everything, still no luck, constant freezing in 3DMark05.
I checked temperatures and everything is running quite cool. I am out of ideas, I really want this solved, two MSI products not liking each other is not very nice :=)
    same here,
I built a rig for a buddy (see specs below) and it will not run a 3d game or benchmark. Anyone have any ideas?????????? The onboard graphics work fine but plug in the vidcard in the PCIE slot and it will crash running games or benchmarks. All drivers are up to date. Numerous BIOS tweaks. Is there some secret setting somewhere to disable the onboard or do I have to leave it enabled?????????

  • [Athlon64] RS480M2 - Video replay from SATA vs PATA

I have built a HTPC and have been frustrated by the jerky replay of video (both recorded TV and ripped DVDs) from the SATA HDD.
When playing video from the SATA disk, the system "stutters" occasionly with a lot of disk activity then the disk activity light goes out for a while and replay is smooth, then the disk light comes on and the replay "stutters" again. This happens with all the various DVD players (PowerDVD, ZoomPlayer etc) I have tried.  However, if the video file is on the PATA disk, then the replay is smooth and disk activity light is almost continuously on.
The Device Manager shows everything operating correctly. Is the MSI SATA implementation a bit suspecton this board? Is there a special configuration required for the SATA drive ?

Enki, the re-install was pretty much in the steps as described, (although I had to tell the BIOS that there was a floppy, then I altered the boot sequence to boot from the CD) it was a "repair" as all my software and data was still there. As this is primarily an HTPC there were gigabytes of movies and CDs, all replaceable so I was not going to cry if I lost it all so I did not back it up. Also, I used the floppy that came with the motherboard as it had the same version of drivers as on the MSI web page.
I did remove the X-Card and the TV card before starting. I found that I also had to unplug the IDE drive to reduce my confusion as the repair install wanted the IDE drive to be "C" drive.
The F6 part is right at the beginning after booting from the CD, then came a "repair console" if I remember right, that wanted the Administrator password and did not seem to do anything, just droped me back to a DOS prompt. After hitting that a couple of times I just continued through thinking I was going to have to do a scratch install, but windows comes up and asks if you want to Install XP, repair a previous installation or quit. You will have to re-enter the activation codes from the XP CD and then run XP SP2 and redo all your updates, plus AVG anti virus had to be re-installed.
Have a good read of www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm (I found this link after I had done the re-install).
After that it was a matter of plugging in and re-installing the hardware.
I also found that My Theatre had a different machine code (I suspect because of the change from IDE) and I had to re-enter my activation code before it would register.
Good luck and I hope that these notes have been of use.

  • [Athlon64] RS480M2-IL for 3d modelling / rendering

    Hi,
Iam planning to build a new system based on RS480M2 -IL and Athlon 64 3200+.
Main objectives are digital video editing, DVD authoring and occasional gaming.
Planning to take up 3d modelling / animation in the near future ( MAYA 3ds max)
Thought of RS480 because, I can use the onboard graphics for the time being and later swith to ATI fire gl pci express workstation graphics when I seriously start 3d work.
Will the configuration be stable enough for 3d rendering etc? or should I think of a Nforce 4 based system?
    Tia

Well for whatever it is worth the 3D modeling will be heading quickly to x64 and the 64 bit CPU's as their platform of choice. As yet though there is a holdup with the ATI boards using x64 as they lack drivers. I would say that at the moment the Via and NVidia chipsetted boards are a better choice. Besides that the small form factor while nice for home theater is not especially conducive to heavy upgradability. I would opt for a more standard build for your purposes.

    whats your HDD problems ??
It's strange, good SDRs but very slow seek times here is the problem discussed a little deeper.

  • [Athlon64] -(RS480M2) - Best choice: SATA or IDE Drive ?

Yesterday I orderered a above mentioned MOBO and today I am reading some posts to see what the subjects mainly are.
And I am a bit confused about the choice I made for the HD...it´s a SATA Maxtor diamondmax 10 200G (no other HD).
There seems to be a solution for bad performance with SATA, but is it still is a good choice working with this solution (concerning performance and trouble) ?? Or is it better to change it to an IDE drive while it still can...

Go with the SATA Maxtor, they are fast, quiet and good value. Just make sure you install it in the BIOS and Windows correctly.
I have updated my post to include HD Tach measurements for a Samsung IDE drive alongside a DiamondMax 10 SATA https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86831.0
I intend to give the Samsung to the next member of my family that runs out of disk space and get another DiamondMax 10 for my system. Will have to get another SATA cable as well 'cause MSI only give you one with the motherboard.

Do a floppy drive flash with the correct switches.  Go back to the last bios that worked properly or try Pinochio's bios which a lot of people like.  Liveupdate will mess up your bios.  So can winflash if you do not use it correctly.

After you have read about it, do this using the correct flash utilty file name and the correct  bios file name
"DOS floppy flash shall be performed with :
    awfl833d.exe w7030nms.180 /py /sn /wb /cc /cd /cp /f /e
(Replace biosfilename with appropriate version for Neo1/neo2 etc , switches remain the same )
    After flash is complete :
TURN OFF PSU (don't restart) wait 15 seconds
Turn on again , press the power button .
Enter BIOS and load optimized defaults (NO OTHER CHANGES) , save + exit
Boot the system again with the floppy in the drive to let the DMI pool build and update itself .
    Good luck.

The performance is really slow using just a SATA drive in Windows XP. Can I swap out the ATI SATA driver with a Silicon Image Driver?

  • [Athlon64] RS480M2 Media Center SP/DIF Dolby Output

I recently built a Media Center using this board. I chose this board because of it's form factor and the inclusion of SP/DIF. However, I have been unable to get a digitally encoded stream from the port. Any content that is DD encoded will not output as such from the SP/DIF port. Is this a hardware limitation or do I have something configured incorrectly?
P.S. - Just to bo clear, I do get sound from the port, just not multi channel.

Put a DVD in and start playing it.  Put media center in window mode so you can see the system tray.  Right click on the nVidia DVD encoder icon.  Select Properties, select Audio tab, click radio button for "a receiver", then a check box will appear for "via an SPDIF cable", check it.
See if that enables your SPDIF out.

  • K9N Ultra BIOS update

Hi. I have K9N Ultra. I had Sempron 2800+ installed on it, and everything worked fine. Now I'd like to install Athlon64 X2 5600. BIOS POST said that it doesn't know processor's revision and won't work at all. I downloaded new BIOS from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=253 (7250v3A.zip). Unpacked and copied Afud408.exe and A7250NMS.3A0 to disk C:\. Then I booted from win98 boot floppy and did the following actions:
    > c:\
    > Afud408.exe A7250NMS.3A0
BIOS update was successful, I turned off the computer, cleared CMOS with SW2 button and installed new Athlon64 X2 5600 CPU. Then I booted again.
The problem is that my system works unstable now. It may suddenly turn off in Windows when I play games. In Linux it may suddenly turn off when I use microphone in Skype.
Motherboard's version as it written on the board between PCI slots: MS-7250 Ver: 2.1.
    How to fix it? Thanks!

    Read >>Posting Guide<<
Reseat the CPU and make sure CPU heatsink is mounted properly and no overheating issue occur.
It is not overheated, because my system turns off immediately after test call in Skype (in Debian Linux). I can compile software for hours, using 100% of both CPU cores, and my system works stable, so I can conclude that it is not overheated.
    I have 2x1GB Kingston DDR2-800, GeForce 7600GS PCI-E, 2x250 GB SATA Seagate drives, Athlon 64 X2 5600 (AM2).

  • [Athlon64] MSI RS480M2-il bios query - ACPI functions

    Hi,
I'm currently in the process of setting up a home theatre system, using the above board and an Athlon 64 3000 Venice core processor.
I have a query regarding the use of standby mode from Windows MCE - I can get Windows to suspend to S1(POS), however this leaves the fans running, I would prefer to suspend to S3, where the fans don't run - however when the bios is set to this, the system hangs on restart - I'm currently using bios version 3.3B6 - does anyone know if 3.4 resolves this issue and is compatible with my processor - I was provided with my current bios version by MSI Tech support as being compatible with my processor.
    Thanks

    Well, I assume that's a good thing....hehe
I turned this board inside-out before I gave the system to my daughter.  She just expects things to WORK!  So, I can understand that type of pressure.    You'll see alot of my posts of "experiences" with the board in this Forum.
You might be best to download and run Memtest86+ to see if your memory is 100% stable and error free.  Are you using the Auto or Manual settings in Bios for memory?
If you get the chance, update your profile with a full set of your system specs, like mine.

All of the problems go away when I run a crappy old ATI Rage3D PCI video card, so this is definitely all related to the onboard video.
Please help me resolve these issues! Thanks in advance!

  • [Athlon64] Overclocking AMD Athlon64 on MSI RS480M2-IL

    Hi,
I thought that MSI motherboard is good at overclocking, but the MSI RS480M2-IL do not have any option to overclock my AMD Athlon64 CPU.
I just built a new PC with the following configuration:
    - AMD Athlon64 3000+ CPU (Venice core)
    - 2 X 512 MB DDR400 2.5 CAS RAM
    - MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard with 3.4 BIOS version
    - AOpen H420B casing with 300W Power supply
    - Seagate 250GB SATA HDD with NCQ
Anyone know how to change the FSB setting in the BIOS or any Windows program that can change the FSB setting so I can overclock the CPU???
I also have the following questions about the RS480M2-IL motherboard:
    - My AOpen casing provide a 20 pins ATX power connector so do I need change the power supply with 24 pins ATX connector?
    - I thinking of adding a nVidia graphics card so anyone have any problem with a nVidia graphics card on this motherboard?

Vdorta: Can give more instruction how to run the ClockGen program??? Do I have to load it every time my Windows bootup???
I don’t have my computer at hand, so the following is from memory, aided by the ClockGen site:
    1. Download the RS480-specific zip file to a folder and extract its contents.
    2. Run the CG-ICS951412.exe file; click on the “Get” button to obtain the current FSB value; adjust the new FSB value you want (there are five values: 200, 204, 210, 214, 220). I tried and tested them all and they were stable in my machine, so I chose the highest, 220.
    3. Create and save in the same folder a simple text file, for example, “filesave.txt” with a text editor (I used Notepad) with the following two lines in it:
    [CG-ICS951412]
    FSB=204
(where FSB is the value you have chosen from ClockGen.exe); every time you change the value, you have to modify the text file to include the new value, of course.
    4. Create a shortcut to CG-ICS951412.exe; right click the shortcut and select “Properties”; add “-file=filesave.txt” to the “Target” field so that it should look something like this:
    “C:\ClockGen\CG-ICS951412.exe -file=filesave.txt”
    5. In order for Windows to load the program at boot, place the shortcut in the Startup folder.

  • [Athlon64] Possibly THE fix for the RS480M2!

No, not a joke about liberal use of a sledgehammer here...
Okay, I think, after literally about two dozen reinstallations of Windows, that I have narrowed the problem (all of them - Depending on other settings, I can reproduce just about all of the complaints I've seen here, but this one seems to cause the actual underlying flaw that the rest simply modify) down to a single BIOS (v3.3) setting:
Set your MPS mode to 1.1 (this requires turning APIC on first, and you should then leave it on).  You might want to clear CMOS first (note that neither of the "official" methods actually do a full clear, you must unplug the system and take the battery out for a few hours.
As I understand it, this should have no real meaning on a single-processor board, but it makes a world of difference.  I had commented about a week ago that turning off APIC seemed to help, but not entirely.  I now see that I should have explored that partial fix just a little bit further.  Well, at least I finally got it right.
If anyone can confirm this on their own box with a similar setup to my own, it would probably help a LOT of people out.
Note that I have not tried the 3.4 BIOS, and since I finally have this miserable board working, I probably won't flash the BIOS again until/unless I absolutely need to for dual core support (if MSI even decides to support them on the RS480M2 line).
As a warning, you will need to reinstall windows after changing this - at the very least, a repair install - in order to fully benefit from it (and quite likely, Windows won't even boot anymore after changing this, until you reinstall).  With XP pro (SP2 slipstreamed), you should only need the MSI drivers for the audio, video, and SMBus (and I installed AMD's Athlon 64 drivers for XP as well, though you don't totally need to, unless you want C&Q to work correctly).
If a couple people post negative responses, I'll post my full BIOS settings some someone to try.  But, I think I reduced the problem to this one setting.

    @pla
I'm all for tweaks that stablize the ATI motherboard. On the surface I don't see how changing the MPS from version 1.4 to 1.1 will do anything. MPS version relates to Multi-Processor Specification. It should only affect multi processor boards. I would be surprised if it actually did anything on the RS480M2. Especially since it is such a legacy setting that only affected operating systems prior to Windows NT.
That being said, I'm game to try other settings and there is the remote chance that this change could affect how IRQs are handled by the board. The following is a quote from Intel about the differences in MPS 1.1 vs 1.4.
"MPS version 1.4 added extended configuration tables to improve support for multiple PCI bus configurations"
I still have a PCI TV Tuner problem that I think is related to IRQ conflicts with the onboard NIC. I'll try it and see if it does anything for me.
