[Athlon64] SATA & IDE Config issue

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered before, (I did search but theres nothing) I have a K8MM-V set up with Maxtor on SATA1, and a DVDRW as Primary Master on IDE. Is this correct? Although I am experiencing no real performance issues, the DVDRW, a Sony unit, seems a bit slow at reading discs - maybe its my imagination!! Thanks in advance for any answers!

Set the DVD drive as a master and any other drive as slave that shares that cable. The SATA drive uses a different controller so it is not the cause. Most DVD players only like to be a slave drive. If you have a 40 wire IDE cable do replace it with an 80 Wire and if teh drive allows DMA then do turn on DMA mode for it.
Ok, it seems its just a quirk of the Sony unit - its seems slow on spin-up compared to the new LiteOn DVDRom
While I'm here, any recommendations for a graphics card for this K8MM-V? I've heard of Via/ATI issues, so I'll avoid them, but I'm looking for budget to mid range cards.. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks  :smiley:

  • SATA Bios Config / WinXP Problems

    All-
    Old time builder, just not in the last 2 years... been a little out of touch.  Tried to find my problems in the forum so far, but haven't seen this exactly - so here goes :
    My Xp Pro will load (usually) but will never finish a good solid boot - always hanging while the load occurs.  Even at the reboots during the INSTALL!  I wonder if this is because of the drive config...
    I have a Neo2-LS with a 2.4c GHz P4 and 2 x 256 MB XMS Corsair matched memory in dual channel.  I have a Radeon 9700 Pro as well.  I am trying to run with my 120GB SATA Seagate and my DVD PATA and my CDRW PATA.
    What's the best SATA/IDE config here?
    I have the following physical setup so far:
    IDE0 = DVD,
    IDE1 = CDRW,
    SATA0 = 120 GB Seagate.
    In the IntPer BIOS I have:
    SATA Only, PATA keep enabled, Both PATA Channels Enabled.
    BIOS tells me:
    SATA0 = PRIMARY MASTER
    IDE0 = THIRD MASTER
    IDE1 = FOURTH MASTER
    Is this ok?  Can I have both IDE Channels filled and run a SATA drive?  OK not to have anything on the SECONDARY channel?
    By having the SATA Only - PATA Enabled, it is the only way that I can see ALL of the drives.  What is the PATA + SATA option for in the BIOS if it can't see all the drives?  Is it better to have PATA only - SATA enabled?
    Any thoughts would be helpful, and thanks in advance.  Will post if anything changes or I can get a few solid XP boots..
    Thanks.

    In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    See  P4 Neo Unofficial Guide for details.
    Try increasing your ram voltage to somewhere between 2.65 and 2.8, the lowest setting that gives you stability. I hope you're not using an old time power supply

  • K9A2Gm V2 under W2k - SATA/IDE issues

    I am having trouble to get W2k running on the K9A2 GM V2 board (I would need that for sw-compatibility issues).
    I got it installed and running by enabling IDE emulation. Problem is that the drive gives me 1.5 Mbit/s transfer rate. On another PC with SB600 in RAID-1 configuration same drives gives me 80MB/sec. I used the MSI F-6 x86 drivers that came with the mobo (ATIDrv/SBDrv/IDEATA133). BIOS tells me that the drive has UDMA-6 enabled. The driver is fine in the device manager and shows up as AMD PCI SATA/IDE Bus Driver. Version is 5.1.0.8.
    -> Did anyone succeed to run W2K with acceptable disk performance?
    I also tried a SATA/RAID setup (using a single drive RAID READY configuration). After the F6 drivers were loaded I got a message that the AHCI drive file is corrupted. I tried several drivers and floppy disks. I also changed the floppy drive with no other effect.
    A bit confused I noted a bunch of other drivers on the MSI CD as JMicron, Promise and Silicon_image. I thought the drives work though the SB700 and thus only AMD drivers would make sense. Is that a misunderstanding?
    I am running out of ideas. Any experiences or comments?
    Thanks,
    tiger
    My system specs are:
        AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
        2GB Ram
        1x 500GB SATA HDD Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
        1x DVD Rom on IDE Primary Master
        ATI HD 3450 Graphics card, 512MB
        400W PSU
        1 additional TP-Link GB LAN card
        W2K Pro SP4
        BIOS A7302 AMS V2.1 021109
    I also observed: in Device Manager mit DVD is listed with UDMA mode. The HDD however is not. The fields look like that:
      - type: "automatic detection" but its grayed out
      - mode "Use DMA if available"
      - actual mode "not accessible", or "not available" (its a translation, I dunno what the EN version displays)
    That must be the reason that the thing is so slow, but why does it not use the UDMA mode?

    What PIO bug?
    There used to be a problem with Win2K, but that has nothing to do with the controller used, this was Win2K going wrong and that was fixed in SP1 or 2, forgot the exact one.
    There fix should be in included in SP3 or SP4 (which i use). I saw couple of Microsoft posts how to deal with that. However, I found many postings in the web with the problem and very often the Microsoft fixed did not work too. I have been trying workarounds for a couple of days now. For some guys another driver did the job (e.g. some "SATA" driver, but I did not find a case with a SB700 chipset.)
    Quote from: Bas on 03-January-10, 23:20:21
    However, when putting the controller in RAID is doesn't use the normal IDE way but it uses SCSI (mini-port) way.
    There are no drivers for Win2K, so use IDE mode or XP, btw AHCI in XP is fairly unstable too but that's an XP problem.
    But you only have 1 drive, so why bother with RAID or ACHI? IDE-mode is faster anyway.
    I agree. RAID/AHCI would have been a workaround for the slow IDE only.
    Quote from: Bas on 03-January-10, 23:20:21
    Set the controller in IDE mode and use the Microsoft drivers! as there are no specific Win2k drivers.
    The slow IDE mode is the initial problem I described in the first post. With the MS drivers I could not get the HDD out of PIO mode. On the MSI driver disk I found specific AMD SB700 drivers for "SATA Controller (Native IDE mode)". The driver was 5.1.0.8 and is designated WinXP32, but usually the XP drivers work fine for W2K. I tried those as well as the standard MS drivers, but I could not get my HDD out of PIO mode.

  • Sata & IDE Hard drive question

    OK im running an Neo4 Platinum SLI MB and i have 2 Western Digital Raptors hooked up in raid 0 array and everything works fine, Now when i try to hook up my old IDE Maxtor Dimondmax 250gb Hard drive it wont be detected in windows.  Do the jumpers need to be changed on all the drives? Am i missing a setting in the bios I tried changing the maxtors jumpers to slave or master and either way made no differance.
    In the bios/Nvidia raid config area i had the IDE secondary master and IDE secondary slave options disabled, If i enabled them the detecting array at start up shows my raid hard drives as well as my DVD-rom and burner.
    mesa confused

    When i installed the 2 sata drives i unpluged my Maxtor so it was never detected..
    The Bios Boot order:
    1st boot priority: DISABLED
    2nd boot priority: DISABLED
    3rd boot priority: HARD DRIVE
    Boot From other device: ENABLED
    Hard Disc Boot Priority:
    1. SCSI-0   :   NVIDIA STRIPE 138.49G
    2. Bootable Add in cards
    Thats It as soon as i shut down the computer and reconnect my maxtor it hangs at the boot IDE detect screen,  i cant even get into Bios.
    Only other stuff i can say is that Under the Integrated Peripherals I have the following setup:
    OnBoard SiI3132 RAID: Disabled
    OnBoard SiI3132 MODE: Raid (Can be raid or sata
    IDE device configuration:
    Onchip IDE Channel 0: enabled

  • Java IDE Security Issues

    I'm evaluating Java IDE's. My boss wants me to evaluate IDE security issues. I can't think of any issues, or how an IDE can have anything to do with security, but didn't want to sweep it under the rug without asking all of you security experts.
    Are there any security concerns when selecting a Java IDE?

    Yeah, you confirmed what I already knew I suppose.
    Unfortunately, I know nothing if this organization, as
    I'm only consulting. The management here INSISTS that
    security be addressed, but I think it's out of scope
    for Java IDE selection. Thanks!In that context, things like "supports HTTPS and ssh access for remote development" may be exactly what they're looking for. It lets managers say "Yes we considered security in making this purchase, and yes the developers of this tool take security seriously." Doesn't mean that security is ever going to impact the actual use of the product.
    Remember that a portion of any management decision goes to insuring you can show a good-faith effort to avoid problems, when/if they happen down the road and someone's looking for a fall guy...
    Good luck!

    I can sync bookmarks in firefox for android, but only the ones that are on Bookmarks main folder, the folders create below the main folder are not synchronized. Is this a bug or a config issue?

    Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

  • HT4413 Migrating files from old mac using Sata ide adapter

    Im trying to migrate files from my old mac hard drive (old mac isnt working- just hooked up hard drive to sata ide adapter) --- when I go to Migration Assistant, "select your disk" it just keeps thinking, it doesnt pull anything up.  When just plugging in the sata adapter, it doesnt come up automatically to run either.  I have used this adapter before with this old harddrive, so I know it works (I had help the last time)....I just cant figure it out this time.  Please help

    You cannot use Migration Assistant.  When you connect the old HDD, does it appear on the desktop of the MBP.  If it does, you will have to transfer the files manually.
    If not, does it appear in Disk Utility?  Post a screen shot such as this:
    Ciao.

  • 851 Router Config Issue

    Hi all,
    Hopefully this will be a nice easy one for you all.
    I have recently configured and installed an 851 router successfully :) I now only have one issue, the damn thing switches itself off after a period of inactivity!
    If I want to use it again I have to issue a reset command then a boot command.
    This takes me to the:
    router>
    prompt. I then have to issue a copy start run command. And then a no shut on each of my interfaces.
    Obviously I would just like the router to stay up and running. But I cant work out how to do it. Im sure that this is just a simple config issue and I would dearly love for you all to solve it!
    If any of you know the answer can you please provide clear an accurate commands as I will copy it parrott fashion into the router.
    Thank you all in advance.
    Stuart

    Hello,
    as spremkumar already pointed out the config register usually is set to 0x2102. You can reconfigure the register by:
    Router#configute terminal
    Router(config)#config-register 0x2102
    Router(config)#end
    Then perform a reload and check whether the config is present after the router finished booting.
    Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

  • 1 SATA + 3 IDE Config help please

    Hi, I have an 865PE - Neo2 - LS.
    Currently I have 1 SATA HD configured as the first boot device  + a CDRW and a DVD on IDE2.
    I would like to add a second standard IDE HD for some extra storage but try as I might I cannot get the bios to recognise the second drive.
    I guess what I am asking is this:
    1 is it possible to have the following config on this board
    1 SATA
    1 IDE HD
    1 IDE DVD
    1 IDE CDRW
    2. If so, could some kind soul tell me how......PLEASE
    Thanks
    Aus

    AUS,
    I personally have the following drives running on my MSI 865PE Neo 2 S mobo without any problem...:
    1 x DVD-Writer(IDE 1, Master),
    1 x DVD(IDE 1, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 80GB HDD(IDE2, Master),
    1 x Maxtor 80GB HDD(IDE2, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 120GB HDD(SATA 1).
    I'm using this config:
    ATA OnChip Operate Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
    And running in Win2k SP 4, AMIBIOS v1.0
    Check and make sure that you are not using any old IDE cable for the HDD and make sure that you did set to either Master or Slave mode, not Cable Select and make sure that you are getting power from the +12v molex connector that plugged to the HDD.

  • SATA/IDE channel configuration issues

    Ok here's the setup:
    First SATA Channel: Seagate 7200RPM 80GB HDD
    Primary IDE Channel: LG 52x CD-ROM Drive
    Secondary IDE Channel: Western Digital 7200RPM 160GB HDD
    OS: Windows XP SP1
    Mobo: MSI 865PE Neo2-P MS-6728 Version 2
    The bios can detect all drives.
    If I use the recommended On-chip IDE Configuration mode as mentioned on page 3-23 in the manual, Windows XP loads and then goes through the process of detecting the Primary and Secondary IDE channel.
    After detecting it reports that Windows reports that the "Driver is not intended for this platform".
    If you look under Administrative Tools in Control Panel is refuses to detect the PATA drive as well.
    I tried swapping the PATA and the CD drives around but the above applied.
    If I try the following drive configuration and set the bios ATA Configuration to PATA & SATA then all drives are detected in Windows:
    First SATA Channel: Seagate 7200RPM 80GB HDD
    Primary IDE Channel Master: LG 52x CD-ROM Drive
    Primary IDE Channel Slave: Western Digital 7200RPM 160GB HDD
    So what's up? I've tried tinkering around with Legacy/Native, PATA/SATA Only etc and I've run out of ideas.

    I got similiar problem as b52 when I plugin an old P-ATA deathstar drive as master on first primary IDE and a LITE-ON dvd-rom as master on secondary. When I enter Windows the hardware auto wiz starts working and after a little while reports that two devices of type "IDE channel" have "Driver is not intended for this platform". I currently use the settings Danny recommends above. Weird thing is both the deathstar and the LITE-ON drive seem to work great. Of course I want to get rid of the exclamation marks in my device manager though. I read elsewhere drive emulation software could be a culprit, and renaming/deleting atapi.sys could be a problem solver - but not for me it turned out. Anyone got other methods to try out?

  • Ccm.config issue - cluster

    <pre>Hi there,
    XI 3.1 , Linux
    We have a very strange situation.
    We built a cluster for two servers bo1 and bo2 - they had SIA nodes called SIA1 and SIA2 respectively
    A week or two ago, the BO repository became corrupted and we had to re-initalise it
    This meant re-building the cluster. This necessitated the creatiion of a new SIA node for bo2 called SIAII (not my idea!!)
    We did this using cmsdbsetup
    This appeared to work and we appeared to have a working cluster
    We noticed yesterday that a scheduled webi doc created on bo1 that was to run every 15 minutes was intermittently failing - about 3 out of 10 instances failed.
    When we dug deeper, we were able to establish that the webi doc failed when the request was passed to bo2 - indeed it appeared to bring down the wireportserver.exe (both of them)
    We re-checked the cluster via cmsdbsetup and everything looked fine.
    Then we checked the ccm.config for bo1 and bo2 and things look a little strange. I believe a colleague may edited ccm.config incorrectly - there were 2 sets of entries in ccm.config for bo2 - one for SIA2 and another for SIAII. Perhaps the wrong one was removed/edited
    Below is the comparsion of the 2 ccm.config files (bo2 on the left; bo1 on the right)
    Neither have anything ins CLUSTER_NAMESERVER=""  - is this correct
    MYSQLHOSTNAME is incorrect on both
    CMSCLUSTER="no"  ?
    On bo2 the node name is  SIANODENAME="SIA2"
    We looked at the registry entries and we can see entries for the old SIA...
    Real question here is whether the ccm.config is accessed when one member of the cluster passed a report request to the other cluster member - would this be our issue?

  • SATA DVD RW issues with K8N Platinum

    Hi
    I have MSI K8N,(939-pin) Platinum-SLI, Mother Board (AMD 3200+, 1.25GB RAM, 80GB SATA HDD).
    On my system  I am facing trouble with SATA DVD- Writer (Samsung's 22x, S-223F/IDBH), as it can read all supported disks but unfortunately it is unable  to write/burn CD/DVD in any format since I purchased this DVD writer . Surprisingly this very same DVD writer  works perfectly  with any other Intel's machine for both reading & writing functions.
    "However the DVD writer with IDE cable works fine on my system without any change or any exclusive setting anywhere."
    Following measures I have tried but failed to burn any disk with my SATA DVD writer
    1. Reseted the BIOS to default/reset to factory setting.
        a) Verified that both of the SATA  controller were enabled.
        b) Verified that RAID was Disabled.
    2. Swaped & connected the DVD writer SATA cable to the port in which the HDD SATA cable was plugged in.
    3. Repleced the complete DVD writer from Samsung Service Center.
    4. Updated the Nero from 7.X to 8.X on the system
    5. Tried to burn disks with other freeware disk burning tools. (e.g. "Burn Plus", "Burn free" etc).
    6.  No other  Optical drive was attached.
    7. Updated the firmware of DVD writer from samsung's service center.
    In all the cases of attempting to burn disks, I found either of the following errors
    Error Message 1
    Invalid block address
    Invalid write state
    Could not perform EndTrack
    Burn process failed
    ******************   OR   *****************************
    Error Message 2
    Invalid block address
    Writing short lead-out
    Session fixation error
    Burn process failed
    Kindly help me to resolve the issue. :(
    Thanks

    You didn't mention if the DVD drive showed up in your bios.  Look in "Standard CMOS Features" , you should have a list of all devices attached to the ide and sata ports.
    you said the drive will play music, is the sound analog (through the small sound cable connected between JCD1 on your motherboard to the DVD drive, or are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)?
    Is this a replacement DVD player, an upgrade from a CD player, or a brand new install?
    Which Operating System are you using? In the past, I have had cd/dvd drives that some how got set up in the os only to play music and would not read or write data discs.
    I fixed the problem by removing the cd/dvd drivers from the system and reinstalling.
    I am using or have used  LG, Sony, and Aopen  BD/DVD/CD drives on this motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum).
    "Ya Scottike , following are my observations
    1. I 'm able to see all connected drives connected through sata ports (i.e. HDD & this DVD Writer) in BIOS under "Standard CMOS Features".
    2. This DVD Writer is absolutely working fine for all reading functionality.
       (It plays music are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)).
    3.  No Other Optical Drive is attached.
    4. Currently Windows Vista Ultimate is installed.
        Note: I have also tried with Windows XP + SP2 earlier on my system, its gives same error whenever tried to
        burn any disk with this DVD writer.
    5. This is a brand new DVD writer.
    Hope I have answered all your queries. Please let me know what can I do to solve my purpose.
    Thanks

  • Apache2 config issue with CFMX8 on Ubuntu

    hi there -
    I have a new Ubuntu laptop I purchased from Zareason, (great
    deal, nice people). They were cool to install CFMX8 developer
    version on my laptop before shipping.
    My issue is this:
    The cfadmin works fine, so I know CF is at least up and
    running, and connected to the web server thru port 8500.
    so,
    http://localhost:8500/CFIDE/administrator/
    works just dandy.
    http://localhost/test.cfm
    (with some simple code) outputs to the browser the literal code
    The problem I have is that when I put a simple test .cfm page
    in my documentroot for apache (mine is /var/www), the CF code
    outputs straight to the browser. I know that SOME scripts execute
    from this directory, since I can run PHP scripts.
    Most of my config options for Apache2 seem to be in the
    /etc/apache2/apache2.conf and /etc/apache2/sites-available/default.
    I cant for the life of me figure out how to get a simple
    script to run from this dir. I've looked at permissions,
    configurations, etc and have come up empty.
    any ideas folks? Thanks in advance.

    Well found the issue. Adapter config needs to have a parent config tag. It was missing in my case.

  • P965 Platimium Correct SATA/IDE Bios Settings

    Hi I have finshed building my sons computer and loaded Windows xp Pro twice (first time I didn't load the intel raid drivers so the SATA drive wasn't recognised except in IDE mode).
    I have run Sandra to get details of the drives etc and check the windows manager to see what drivers are being used for the hard drive and DVDRW drive
    The Samsung drive is using the Intel Raid drivers (checked via device manager) and is reported as being in UDMA 6 (although UDMA 7 is supported reported via Sandra). Speed tests of the hard drive seem to match the standard SATA 300 drive held in Sandra data base.
    The DVD is using the standard windows IDE drives in single and dual mode. It is not using the Intel drivers.
    I tried fiddling with the BIOS trying different settings in the integrated peripherals menu and here are the results for the different sub menus:
    1. On board raid controller
    Setting to IDE : I get the DVD RW Recognised as a IDE device and burning capabilities (windows uses the standard IDE drivers not Intel or jmicro)
    Setting to RAID:  windows recognises the DVD RW as a SCSI device but I don't seem to get any burning facilities with the device (windows uses the jmicro SCSI driver)
    2. On chip ATA devices
    2.1 IDE master enabled  : DVD RW works OK including burning capabilities
    IDE master disabled :  DVD RW works OK but cant burn a disk
    2.2 Setting SATA#1  to ACHI rather than raid Windows hangs (blue screen) during boot up
    Setting  SARA#1 to RAID windows boots OK and hard drive recognised as ATA drive
    (2.2 I know is caused by the fact that I set up the drive as a RAID drive during windows set up so no problem there.)
    Please can someone tell me what should the correct bios settings be for 1 no. SATA 300 hard drive and 1 no.  IDE DVDROM and what drivers ideally should windows being using. The various RAID and IDE settings are very confusing.
    Thanks in advance

    One of the features of AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is Native Command Queuing (NCQ). This allows ATA drives to accept more than one command at a time and reorder commands for efficiency. The reason there is some interest in getting this setup is because it supposedly increases performance. How much of an increase I don't know. I have AHCI setup in the BIOS and Vista installed fine. I read you also need the Intel Storage Matrix drivers but I'm not sure if this just applies to XP or VISTA too; in any case I never installed them. One adverse affect of changing AHCI in the BIOS having already installed XP with no AHCI is that it will not boot afterwards. I wish somebody would weigh in on this issue and give us some good advice on best practices so we can all take full advantage of SATA.
    Intel Matrix Storage drivers in AHCI mode will make the hard drives perform a little bit better, but not because of NCQ (on a single user system and OS that is). On most hard drives NCQ will cause performance to go down by a couple percent...

    Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    We decided to keep the server and client configurations separate to keep an overview.
    We added the thread-count parameter to the xml like in this example
    <caching-schemes>
    <!--
    Distributed caching scheme.
    -->
    <distributed-scheme>
    <scheme-name>Provider</scheme-name>
    <service-name>DistributedCache</service-name>
    <thread-count>10</thread-count>
    <backing-map-scheme>
    <local-scheme>
    <eviction-policy>HYBRID</eviction-policy>
    <high-units>30</high-units>
    <expiry-delay>0</expiry-delay>
    </local-scheme>
    </backing-map-scheme>
    <autostart>true</autostart>
    </distributed-scheme>
    <distributed-scheme>
    <scheme-name>Concept</scheme-name>
    <service-name>DistributedCache</service-name>
    <thread-count>10</thread-count>
    <backing-map-scheme>
    <local-scheme>
    <eviction-policy>HYBRID</eviction-policy>
    <high-units>5</high-units>
    <expiry-delay>0</expiry-delay>
    </local-scheme>
    </backing-map-scheme>
    <autostart>true</autostart>
    </distributed-scheme>
    but this didn't change much in the performance (It was a littlebit better, but didn't get near the response times without coherence). When I took a threaddump of the cacheserver I saw 10 WorkerThreads for coherence. Just a question. Setting the threadcount to 10, does this mean 10 threads per disctributed-scheme, or 10 threads for the distributed service. Must we repeat the thread-count parameter for each distributed-scheme?
    Do we have to increase the thread-count on the client side?
    Are there other things that we can try?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Kim
