Thanks, have tried those things already, and I spent a week browsing these and other forums on this boards quirks but bought it anyway....
Odd thing is if I run stock speeds on my 6800 I can play Guild Wars trouble free, but cant bench Aquamark or 3D Mark at all because of horrible performance.
If I OC my 6800 I can bench till the cows come home but cant play Guild Wars....   this setup has me ready to
I know it's not "officially" supported yet but I am Running a new Venice core A64 3200 maybe thats what the issue is ? My board came with the 1.5 bios, right now I am running the official Taiwan but unofficial US 1.6 bios. Have also tried the 1.8 mod and the 1.41b mod bioses to no avail. I'm running the new nvidia Unified 6.11 Chipset drivers with the WHQL "beta" 76.45 Dets. I'm going to try a different vid card driver and chipset driver tonight and hope this fixes my issues.
I have always been an AMD man, but right now I am seriously considering doing an RMA on this and trying a P4.........

  • Very Unstable K8N Neo-2 Platinum

Hey, just would like some feedback. I just got this board on Friday and have spent untill yesterday just getting Windows loaded....
I fix/build PC's for a living so I'm no noob, b ut this board has me wanting to run over it with my car... lol
I can only get this board stable if I relax memory timings a bunch  8 3 3 2.5 . I have an Antec Truepower 550 PSU, A gig of Corsiar TwinX 3200 XL Pro,
Maxtor 120 GB PATA HDD, GeForce 6800 And a Samsung Burner and a hitachi DVD rom.
My main issue is stability have tried board stock, and overclocked. I have tried 4 differnt Bios versions and three different chipset versions but my video performance is odd, cant run aquamark it is doggishly slow, but I can play Guild Wars finally. I havent tried a new vid card driver yet. Running the 76.45 WHQL beta from nvidia atm. If I overclock my vid card at all I get blue screens and reboots. With it at stock settings it runs fairly ok.
I just wonder if Im missing something in setup? MSI's manual is big , but worthless, any ideas guys ? cause I really want this to work......

  • About voltages while idle on K8N Neo Nforce3, Athlon64 3000 754

I have MSI K8N Neo FSR and 754 Athlon64 3000. My voltages in idle (just downloading some file by dial-up)as reported by Core Center 2.0.0.4 are:
    vcore: 1.52v
    3.3v:  3.33v
    +5v:   5.16v
    +12v:  12.08v (sometimes shortly changes to 12.14 or 11.90)
    is this ok?

    Rogue K8N Neo,
Those are within spec and did you know that you can ask more then one question in the same thread????
    Richard
P.S. It would save us chasing over several threads to see what has already been posted for you.

  • K8N Neo - High Performance Mode Killed System?

I'm slightly frazzled at the moment, so forgive me for any mistakes. I installed the K8N Neo Platinum on Tuesday night, with a brand new Athlon64 3200+ with 1mb L2.
Video Card: VisionTek Xtasy Geforce4 Ti4400
    Memory: 2x Kingston 512MB 400MHz DDR PC3200
    Power Supply: Antec True550
    +3.3V @ 32A
    +5V @ 40A
    +12V @ 24A
I installed the various MSI applications tonight, including CoreCenter. Attempted to adjust the FSB with it, but with just a 2.5% increase, the temperature of the CPU was getting higher than I cared to see during stressful applications. So I set it back to default, and later on read up on the BIOS settings in the manual... I read the description of "High Performance Mode", and figured I would try setting it to Optimized.
Seemed like a good idea, let the board I had read was great for overclocking do it's stuff automatically. So after I set it to optimized (Didn't change anything else), I hit F10 and let it reboot. It never did. When it rebooted, the power stayed on, Hard Drive light showed it was being accessed... Only problem was absolutely no video was being sent. Monitor was as black as black could be.
Turned the power off, tried again and again. Same deal. Power comes on, HD shows it is being accessed constantly for about 20 seconds, then just stops. But no video is being output, which leads me to think the system is just dead in the water for the most part.
During this state, the LED's on the back are as follows: Top two are red, bottom two are green. I saw in another thread someone was going on about there being an explanation for them, but I don't have it in my manual nor could I find an explanation of them.
At this point I'm just shaking my head, because there is absolutely nothing to be done as far as I can tell. If anyone has any ideas as to a possible solution or at the very least, whether the MB just went nuts or something worse happened, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at a loss and afraid to even think what might be the problem.

While the "high performance settings" can surely make the pc unstable, it should hardly ccause hardware-damage.
Turn the computer off (to be safe, remove the power-cord)
Clear cmos with the jumper (instructions can be found in your manual)
    Wait 30 seconds
Put the jumper back to its original position.
Power on the system, and see if it works ?
    EDIT: Info from manual:
    Quote
    Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1
There is a CMOS RAM on board that has a power supply from external battery
to keep the system configuration data. With the CMOS RAM, the system can automatically
boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the system configuration,
use the JBAT1 (Clear CMOS Jumper ) to clear data. Follow the instructions below to
    clear the data:
    MSI Reminds You...
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off.
Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the
system is on; it will damage the mainboard.

  • K8N Neo - Random Hang - Memtest Fail

    I'll make this quick:
Have MSI K8N Neo Platinum (BIOS 1.4), Athlon64 3000+, 512MB GeIL Golden Valur DDR3200, Radeon 9800 Pro, 160GB Maxtor SATA. No overclocking.
Everything installed (XP Pro) fine but lots of random crashes and freezing, both in games and browsing internet, etc...
Ran memtest86, which returned around 980,000 errors after an hour or so! - seems all on Test 5. Faulty RAM or just incompatible???
Getting 512MB Crucial Ballistix DDR3200 instead, but that doesn't arrive until tomorrow....
If this doesn't solve the problem (ie. Memtest still fails), could the problem be down to a faulty motherboard or even faulty CPU?? Is the new memory likely to solve my problems?
Thanks for your help... I just can't bare the stress any longer

I think you can forget about fauly cpu . Usually it either works or not .
Exception is broken pins , overheating or something like that.
Try the memory in different slots and give it more voltage with manually selection
to compensate for voltage fluctuations or low lines ,ajust it up to 2.8v (they are confirmed by geil to operate from 2.55-2.85) .
Set aggressive timing to "disabled" .
If this does not improve it's operation set it to max frequency 166 in the dram submenu of cell menu.
Memory errors "can" occur with low wattage psu if the voltage to the mainboards
voltage regulators is unstable or low. If +12v is overloaded it typically affects the max output on 3.3v and 5v and makes them unstable .
And as a result memory which is ran from 5v via mobo regulators can get unstable .

  • Question for those with memory issues on k8n neo plat

I have been having issues with my memory on the k8n neo platinum board since i built the system last month and i just recently discovered a fact I had overlooked.
I Have discovered that  if i test the system while it is cool (having sat turned off overnight for example), then memtest will pass the ram just fine and the system will be stable for a short period of time, generally longer if no intensive applications are used, ie. doom3 vs. websurfing).
This system, once it heats up ( seems mostly to be the nvidia 3 nb that needs to be "hot"- that is, a probe placed in contact with the module reaches about 58+ degrees c) then the system becomes unstable and memtest, if used, fails.
Prime95, if used on it when its cool, will usually take about an hour or so to fail, but if its used on the system when its been running a bit ( temps from nb at 58c+ and memory module hot to the touch) then it fails after about 20-30 seconds.
I have placed an active hs on the nb in an attempt to correct this, but temps still remain high with failures occuring.
I have spent the better part of three days testing the sytem this way and the above facts have held true in all these tests.
I have  tested at stock ratings ( not using "auto" in bios, but using "approved ratings" of 10 x 200 for fsb and timings of 2-3-3-7 for my ram at 1:1 (which is recommended as well) since i am testing for base stability at this point;Voltages have been left at auto settings, however.
I was wondering if anyone else with memory issues could try this out and post if this seems to be the case for you as well.
Perhaps the memory issues on these boards are directly related to a problem with the nvidia 3 chipset running too hot?
Does anyone have a memory issue with these boards who is using water cooling on the NB ?
Lack of issues from people using 'problem" memory, but having no failures with water cooled nb's would support my assumption.

    Yes i did mean chipset.
I am using a stock hs/fan from amd, which seems to run a tad hot but, considering that I wont overclock until I can get board stable, its not an issue. (runs 35-40 idle and up to 72 intensive). I need the warranty more then the extra mhz at present.
I removed the stock heatsink from the nvidia chipset and bought a generic chipset cooler (green, very little in the way of fins and seems to be aluminum) with a small fan.
I used a generic silver paste from Compusa to adhere both the cpu hs and the chipset.
I didnt lap either hs, just installed each as per instructions on artic silvers website (figured it had to go on the same way even generic).
I also bought a kingwin thermal center which i ran probes from to the cpu, case, and nb chipset.
I am not using it to adjust fans so those arent connected - its just a reference temp I can see at a glance, esp considering the funky bios reading this boards been known to give.
I assume from these responces that even a nvidia 3 250 chipset shouldnt get as hot as mine?
I asked about that from the retailer i bought this from but he seemed to think it was "ok" at 50ish celcius, but then again he didnt look too confident when he said it, lol.
Idle right now reads on Corecenter at 28 celcius for cpu and 33 celcius for the chipset, although, I have readings of 37 c and 43 c from the kingwin thermal center, which i believe to be more accurate.
My voltage reads at 11.67 for the 12v line at idle right now.
The psu i got is stick from the xblade case i bought in store. (http://www.xoxide.com/xblade2.html)
I have a dvd burner, cd drive, and two maxtor ide hd's attached to the system; The only card is the agp.
Is there a way to check and see if the cpu ispower starved? software monitor or even an external probe perhaps?
I havent put a probe on it, but the ram came in its own heatspreader, which gets very hot to the touch as well.
What temps should I be looking for on these items?

  • Boot Problem with K8n Neo 2 Platinum

I cant get my Computer to load the bios
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will lock up in the Bios Sign on and the only way to get it to boot through is to keep resetting the computer and turning the power off and on. It does this on a random basis, Ive also had problems with it locking up if the dynamic oc is turned on.
Has anybody heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Corsair memory is known to be troublesome with AMD64.
Nevertheless, if everything is set correctly, it'll work.  I've been running the LLPRO 3200 1GB kit at 220MHz without any noticable problems.  Run a couple of rounds with Memtest86+ to verify memory functionality.
Can you please give your specifications on the power supply unit (PSU), especially the amperage on the +12 volt rail.
    Anders.

    Okey here it comes..
I installed everything and all seemed to work okey,  until i threw in the XP install cd and began my install..
in the dos install of windows xp, (when it moves files to the hdd) it stopped and said that there was a problem with a file that were to be copied, i pressed enter to try again and  the install moves on,  this accurs 4-5 times and then it gives me a BIG  "IRQL less or not equal".. Blue screen of death.. (it complains on different files each time i try to install xp, tried 15-20 times)
I have tried to change memory to another Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512Mb DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Unbuffered CL3 with no luck,
changed hdd, change gfx-card. change psu,  removed all no-need pci-cards..
but still same error, i aint no expert so i might have missed something in bios or something :(
please help me if you can..

Flashing bios with memory errors is a veeeeery bad idea .
Almost guarantied to ruin your bios chip with bad data block.
That this even is suggested with mem errors , well .
You need to resolve the mem errors before doing anything else.
The windows xp install routine is a very heavy user of cpu and memory
and will fail if you have mem errors like you have.
Some things to try is entering bios and change auto settings on cpu voltage
giving it 0.5v more than default .
Set the memorys voltage to vendors max approved voltage
    which for yours is 2.6v +/- 0.1v . So it's safe to set at 2.7v .
    Set timings to cas 3 ,ras 3 ,trp 3 , tras 8 , CMD 2T.
Pushing it firmly down in the dimm socket , sometimes it's not all the way down there even if the plastic lockers snap in.
Disconnect all devices not needed for a windows install ,things can be added later.
Have only the hd that os is to be installed to , one cdrom , floppy , memory and
    gfx card .
Disconnect USB case front connector (cause corruption and strange faults if
    USBOC pin is connected)

Make sure you have Both the ATX Wires on.. theres the Big one! (21Pins i think).. and the Small 4Pin Connector both need to be connected.. if you havent done so yet.. Another thing you could do is Take everything out and place it on a cardboard or something appropriate for the mobo.... I think your motherboard is shorting?.. if it's touching your case.. I had somewhat the same issue long time ago.. give it a try..if you want hope it helps..

  • K8N Neo CPU buzzing after latest bios update

I'm running the K8N Neo Platnum Edition with an Athlon64 3400+ and have been thrilled with the performance and the quiet nature of the system...  until now.  I upgraded the bios to 1.5 and now I hear an annoying buzz coming from somewhere near the CPU.  I have stopped all of the fans and touched all of the coils around the CPU and nothing seems to diminish the sound.
I have found two ways to alter the sound.  1) if I scroll the mouse wheel when viewing a web page it goes completely silent.  2) setting the FSB to about 215... but then my computer locks up soon thereafter.  The sound starts as soon as the first XP loading screen appears.  I've updated the video drivers (ATI Radeon 9600) for what that's worth.
It's pretty much driving me crazy and I'd really like my old bios and silent computer back.  Anybody have any thoughts or is anyone experiencing this too?
    -Mike
(P.S. I've posted this in another forum relating to the bios in general)

    Exactly same problem here too.
No matter which bios i use, the high pitch noise is coming from the mofset area (coils).
The sound starts on bootlogo here as well. What i found interesting is, that there's no buzz in DOS !
It starts when winXP is loading drivers. WEIRD.
I tried to nail-vanish the coils onf first board - didnt help. Vanish fried after few days.
I RMA'd the board for other reason (dead mobo) and i got new one.
    But the problem still presist.
I used clockgen to downgrade the CPU to 1V and like 700mhz. Absolutely no buzz. That means higher HTT + higher voltage = louder noise. Try on your own.
I'm running 8,5*308(2618mhz) @ 1.65v. Rock stable but the noise is driving me crazy.
The sound is coming from the mofset area (different source tho i guess) also in 3D. It's not the graphics card...
It's not PSU either. I tried like 7 of them.
This board is great, i love my overclock, but it just do high pitch noise.
I paid like 300USD for great quiet non-audible cooling, my PC doesnt do any noise. The only thing i hear is whining motherboard.

  • Overclocking of MSI K8N neo platinium

MSI K8N neo platinium, Bios 1.4
    Athlon64 3200+ 2000Mhz (200Mhz x10) 1MB cache, Clawhammer.
    Geil 2x512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz Value CL2,5 5ns Aluminium Heat
    Club3D 9800pro@xt
    Hitachi Deskstar 7K250-160 160Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA
    400w psu
Before when I had just one memory chip(512mb in slot 1), I had no problem to run 235Mhz x10. All I had to do was the following :
    Put hdd in SATA 4
    Set AGP to 68Mhz
    Adjust cpu voltage from 1.45 - 1.55v
Set mem. clock to 166Mhz (sense it will increase as you raise the FSB)
Now I`ve bought one more identic memory chip. I have now 2x512MB memory placed in slot 1 and 3.
I followed the same steps as above, but with terrible results. Max 215Mhz x10 stable.
I`m pretty sure it`s not the memory chips that`s the problem, as they run stable
with original settings ( witch is higher speeds (200Mhz) than those I run on the memory when overclocking (166 - 195Mhz).
I would be greatfull for any tips or solutions that you might think would help me (and others) to reach better o/c results.

try slots 1+2 instead of 3, i have found that i can't oc very well in 1+3 either.

  • Differences k8n neo neo platinum

    Hello,
I want to buy a k8n neo mainboard. I'm not sure to take the k8n neo PLATINUM or the k8n neo without platinum (FSR?). I'm not using raid or firewire. So what are the differences? Are there differences in performance?? Or some other things?
And i want to buy 2 x 512MB PC3200 Crucial memory (the cheapest version) with this system. Will this work?
    greetz!

it's socket 754. But at the specs page (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=571) reports that the FSR has a nforce 250GB chipset. So it also has GBLan I guess??
Futher i see no other differences than extra raid and firewire?
BTW. the reason of my 'confusion' is that i can't find reviews or something of the FSR. It's only platinum, platinum, platinum.... but that platinum is almost 20 euro's more expensive then the FSR, so I think i can better chose the FSR.. or not?
BTW2. it's not my own system, but for someone else. I still have an athlon64 monster   I have to advise him which motherboard to take, but he wants a nvidia..
