ATI 3870 only works on 8 lane

I've added an ATI Radeon HD 3870 Mac & PC Edition to slot 1. When looking at the Expansion Slot Utility the card does not show up when slot 1 is set to x16; doesn't show up in the System Profiler either. If I switch slot 1 to an 8 lane option, then the card shows up. Anyone know why I can't run the card in slot 1 with a full 16 lanes? The card doesn't work when the slot is set to x16, works otherwise.
I installed the drivers from the CD not knowing that 10.5.8 is suppose to already have them. But the card has the same problems when I boot off a separate drive that has only 10.5.8 installed.

Slot 1 is the bottom slot. That's where the card is installed. I have the old card (NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT) installed in slot 4. I switched it back to slot 1 and it worked at x16. Took it out, ATI card only, nothing; put the NVIDIA back so that I can have a working card while testing different configurations with the ATI card.
Right now the card is working with slot 1 set to x8.
Looking at the System Profiler, looking at PCI Cards, the ATI shows up twice. As:
Card:ATI Radeon HD3870, Type: display, Driver Installed Yes
and as
Card:ATI Radeon HD3870, Type: ATY,MegaloddonParent, Driver Installed: No
Odd, that... at least to me.

ATI 9700 only works in Safe Mode ?

Hi,
I purchased a Celestica ATI 9700 MAC gfx card and it seems only to work in Safe Mode. In normal mode my G4 boots but wont reach the login screen, the screen stays blue and occasionaly it may show the mouse(responds).
I can only think that the card is broke and isnt being stressed by Safe Mode or has some kind of incompatible firmware?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated as i'd love to get the 9700 running in my machine.

I could well be wrong but I've always been under the impression the 9700 only works in MDD G4s. I believe they were only available from Apple at the time as a built to order option and the AGP slot in all MDD G4s was modified to provide additional power to the card. I'm not sure whether third party 9700 graphics cards need this though. The 9800 gets round it by having a separate internal power connector, so it can be used in any G4 with an AGP slot.

Is there a batch process that runs in the evening? Perhaps that ends up cleaning out the data from the buffer cache, turning logical I/O's into physical I/O's early in the morning.
Can you check the statistics on the table before the process starts and after you re-gather statistics? Perhaps there is a nightly process that is altering the statistics at an unfortunate time or in an unfortunate way.
The previous poster's comment about getting a trace file is excellent as well-- whatever your session is waiting on will be apparent in the trace.

Can you have 2 ATI 3870 cards in a 1st gen Mac pro

I have a first gen Mac pro my system specs is 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual Core Xeon. I was wondering if its possible to install 2 graphics. Does anyone have any information on if this is possible and if so can you get cross fire to work on the pc side for gaming.

Yes you can. I have a 1st Gen Mac Pro with 2 ATI 3870s and crossfire mode when I run Windows with Bootcamp.
On the mac side install the drivers BEFORE you put the hardware in.
Install them in the two lower pcie slots and connect them with both crossfire cables. You have to go into the expansion slot utility (HD>System>Library>CoreServices>Expansion Slot Utility) and change the configuration of the two lower slots (slots 1 & 2) to be 8 lanes each.
In bootcamp: After you physically install the cards you need to remove all current gpu drivers from Windows and then install the new drivers for the 3870s.
I just did this myself not even a month ago after several days of frustration of trying to make it work. The key is to make sure the pcie slots are both equal at 8 lanes. Nothing worked until I did that.
Works great but is quite loud. I'm looking into passive cooling systems now...

Getting Asus ATI 4870 to work in my Mac Pro. Not working. please help!

I read here on these boards that an ATI 4870 would work in an early model (in my case, 2006) Intel Mac Pro.
I jumped in hastily and bought the Asus branded card: EAH4870
I connected it, and nothing... did not work.
I do not think it is a Mac version of this card, perhaps intended to be used in a windows machine.
Questions:
- Do I need to "flash: this card to make it work in my Mac Pro OSX 10.6.3?
- Are there Mac drivers for this card? I can't find anything anywhere
- Basically, can I get this card to work, or do I need to PAY the extra $$$$ just to have a "Mac" version of this.
Keep in mind, I am not a techie, I need to do Work, not fiddle with this kind of stuff.. unfortunately, a software package crucial for a job is very finicky and works with only a handful of cards.. The 4870 is one of them.
I do not have dual boot, and no windows machines to "flash" or rework this card.
If you can help me to get this card to work, it would be MOST appreciated!!!

It is not a Mac version. It does not have the required EFI boot ROM needed to work on the Mac. Video drivers are contained in OS X. Either you have to have the card flashed (this is illegal) or buy a Mac version of the card.
If you aren't a "techie" then you don't have the hardware needed to flash the ROM nor know how. Because this site belongs to Apple we cannot help you with something that is illegal.

ATI FirePro V8800 work with 2007 Mac Pro?

Doing a lot of work in Cinema 4D and Motion 4 these days -- I've done the supported upgrade to an ATI 3870 but this card is missing in accuracy. I noticed that ATI have released the FirePro V8800 ($1500) and was wondering if anyone has this card working in their older (32bit EFI) Mac Pro (circa 2007).
I believe (need to double check) that 2007 MacPro was PCIe 1.1 or 1.0a not 2.0?

VPN works on internal LAN, but not externally

I'm running Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 on a Mac Mini and I'm trying to set up VPN so that I can administer the server from outside the LAN. The problem is that the VPN connection works on the LAN, but I cannot connect from outside. I've tried this from an iPhone tethered connection and from my client's corporate network.
I've read some posts on this so I'll summarize what I've tried:
L2TP and PPTP configured in Server Admin
Server Preferences > VPN Service ON > IP range 10.0.1.210 to 10.0.1.220 with Shared Secret set
Client side L2TP defined as:
Server Address: server.domain.com
Account Name: <myshortname>
Authentication Settings:
Password: <myaccountpassword>
Shared Secret: <same as one set in VPN Service
Client side PPTP defined as:Everything the same exceptEncryption: Maximum

There's something particular about my landscape which I'll describe. I run a DSL connection to a Linksys router for SLPPP purposes (anti-throttling using Tomato MLPPP firmware). This router has an Airport Extreme in its DMZ so that the AEBs can manage the NAT for the LAN. The server sits behind the AEBs.
I have no issues with open port checks on other services that are port-forwarded through the Airport only so I know the Linksys isn't getting in the way.

Yes, that's right, except the Mac Mini is connected wirelessly (I know, not ideal for a server).
The Linksys has the static IP given by the ISP.
server.domain.com has 10.0.1.50, the static IP given by the AEBS.
When I set up the server, I left NAT on the AEBS and decided to manage its server-specific settings via Server Preferences. It seemed less disruptive to me at the time, as though I was adding a server to the existing network instead of replacing the entire network. I also wanted to retain the usage of the Guest Network feature in the AEBS and that means the AEBS has to manage the DHCP.
Not all computers here are meant to connect to the business network. They all connect to the Internet through the AEBS (I believe I set the server to manage the DNS though); however, mine logs into the Mac Mini network.
I haven't tried connecting directly to the DSL. It's difficult right now as the server has to be in a different location then the phone line. I wouldn't have a monitor there to administer the network changes. I plan on changing the phone line location during the pending renovations though.
For a one man operation with a Mac server set up in a home office, what arrangement would you recommend? We have 2x laptops (1 for business, 1 other), 3x mobile devices, and a server that doubles as a media centre.

Library sharing only works on wifi

Hi,
Please help. I am running an iMac with OS 10.6.8 and a Samsung netbook NC10 running Windows XP. Both machines are in the same LAN, with a router of Sitecom to connect them and create internet availabilty.
When I run the Airport Express on the iMac the netbook itunes can see the itunes library of the iMac. When I just have the ethernet running, the library is not visible. What is blocking the sharing opportunity of the library of the iMac?
I would like to have only one library I actively use and update and play music on the netbook in the living room, connected to the amplifier.

Have you enabled your phone to use Cellular Data for iTunes Match? If not it will only work on WiFi.
The other possibility that I read is that there is a weird glitch in Apple's Terms and Service which changed recently. Apparently until you accept the new T&C the iTunes Match will skip on cellular. Annoyingly it seams the only way to get the new T&Cs to show for you to accept them is to go buy a new song.

ATI 3870 upgrade?

Have a MAC PRO 2x2.8ghz quad core xeon, 2GB memory and want to upgrade my ATI Radeon ATI HD2600.
Don't need a high end card just something better. In previous PC life preferred NVIDIA but not a necessity. The 8800 may be too high end, as would the new ATI 4800 series. My gaming use is minimal. I have read should wait a few weeks and the prices may be much less because of all of the recent introductions????
Thinking of the ATI 3870, 3850 or maybe the 4850. This is my first MAC upgrade so forgive my lack of knowledge. The internet websites with those cards show them as PC or MC compatible. Will these work or can I even buy this at a local Fryes? The box may not say MAC compatible but if the same model, perhaps it is??
Thinking better to buy from a web site that says it is PC/MAC compatible.

MacBook Pro will not charge, only works when plugged in.

My MacBook Pro says it is at 68% battery not charging but the source is coming from the power adapter. It hasnt gone down for the past day or so. Also it only works when it's plugged in and shuts down immediately when the charger is unplugged. I just bought a replacent cord and this started happening. Does anybody have a fix for this? ATI driver not working properly on windows xp

Did you install the Windows XP Chipset Driver for your model prior to trying to install the Ati driver? The chipset driver must be one of the first drivers installed so that the operating system can correctly identify the rest of the installed hardware for their driver installation. Once the chipset driver is installed, reboot and then try installing the Windows XP version of the Ati driver.

Mac only works with 2 monitors connected

My mac pro OSX 10.7.5 briefly had a second monitor connected via a dvi to mini adaptor. My main screen is connected via dvi. I now want to remove the second monitor but when I do, my main screen remains black; it only works if both monitors are connected. I have tried rebooting, switching display ports, rebooting with no displays, the rebooting again, switching mirroring on and off, but nothing seems to work. The second monitor does not even need a power source - it seems that the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) is stuck in dual display mode. I have also removed the com.apple.windowserver.plist from preferences, but no joy. Any ideas?

My guess is your setup is wrong. On my 5.1 system, I get sound from all the speakers, including the rear ones.
Open the Quicktime control panel, and click the Audio tab. Make sure the "Channels" pulldown matches your current speaker setup.
Also, in the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel, on the "Volume" tab, click the "Advanced" button under "Speaker Settings". Make sure the Speaker setup pulldown matches your current speaker setup.

Elitebook 840 / 850 only boot if an LAN-Cable is plugged in

.....we solve the problem that our new EliteBook 840 and 850 only boot if the LAN cable is connected. Without LAN Contact the laptops in the boot process to stop.
A BIOS update and an update of the driver was not successful. Reinstalling remained without success.

T500 Windows 7 Enterprise Webcam only works in Lenovo Toolbox

I have a T500 running smoothly except integrated camera and finigerprint reader. I'm ok with fingerprint reader but I want to make my camera work atleast. My webcam , integrated camera only works in Lenovo toolbox but doesn't work on Yawcam, Yahoo or Skype. So far I tried Uninstalling the camera driver and software from programs and device manager. I reinstalled the driver downloaded from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70600.html I din't find any utility / program that show my webcam working except the Lenovo toolbox's hardware test. Any tricket other option to try ? - Sunil Parmar

If Fn-F6 doesn't work it means you don't have the latest hotkey driver installed (it is a new feature), which leads me to ask if you have the newest webcam driver installed?

Does DualCoreCenter ONLY work with the MSI VGA Drivers?

I have the RX3870-T2D512E-OC Video Card using the latest Catalyst 8.5 drivers but DualCoreCenter does not see the video card at all. If this product only works with MSI drivers than it's total and utter crap for Video since the drivers are so far out of date for ATI that it is not funny by MSI. It detects the new K9A2 CF-F V2 mainboard just fine but not my video card.

So use the ATI drivers, then you have all the options except the MSI extra's.
MSI can't release drivers without testing, so it takes a bit of time.
BTW, GPU Scaling was already in Catalist 8.30, MSI has 8.45 online, ATI is at 8.50
I wouldn't consider that far behind.
BTW, why do you consider a bit older driver useless? Any reason why you must have the latest driver?
Only a few games require to have the latest drivers at all.
I myself never use the latest ATI drivers, I prefer the better tested MSI version, even when it's a few months behind.
And I have never seen a game that had problems with it.
