ATI 6000 series graphic card-

I imagine many of us MacPro owners know that Apple offers last years’ cards at next year’s prices. As such, I was wondering if anyone has been successful with installing the PC variants into their 2009 MacPro.
On the Q&A sales page, I remember a guy stated you could simply flash the PC version card and it would work in the MacPro but frankly, that sounds too easy. I would love to install an ATI 6000 series card into my MacPro in order to better support my NEC PA271 display. In fact, I'm planning on hooking another NEC just like it.
BTW: I’m not a gamer, although I do prefer to at least 1+ the stock GT-120 to drive my monitor(s). Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi-
The latest update holds the necessary support for the following Radeon cards:
AMD Radeon HD 6850 Device ID 0x6739
AMD Radeon HD 6870 Device ID 0x6738
AMD Radeon HD 6970 Device ID 0x6718
Further, the Radeon 5xxx cards show broader support:
ATI Radeon HD 5630 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5630 Device ID 0x68D9
ATI Radeon HD 5670 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5730 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5770 Device ID 0x68B8
ATI Radeon HD 5850 Device ID 0x6899
ATI Radeon HD 5870 Device ID 0x6898
I've seen reports of various X86 users having plug and play success (no flash) with cards from the above lists.
As for which cards, exactly, you'll have to do some searching.
Also, there are no reports of MP users making the jump to 6xxx cards, yet......

I have lenovo Lenovo G500 59-370339 laptop with ATI Sunpro 8570 graphics card [2gb]. It also comes with integrated intel hd graphics 4000. I want to ensure that whatever graphic intensive application I'm using, it uses my ati graphic card instead of integrated intel graphics card. How is it possible?

    Hi Archz2,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
The ATI graphics will automatically switches when higher graphics is required for the application or any specific application can be added to the ATI radeon catalyst center for any specific application if required.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

The fastest way (which will take a while) is to:
    1) Make sure you have an up to date backup with time machine.
    2) Boot from your Leopard install disc or disc that came with your computer.
    3) When choosing an install method you can choose an archive and install or erase and install.
    4) After the OS is installed it will ask you if you want to restore files from another drive, partition, mac or time machine.
    5) Choose time machine and get your files restored.
    6) Once the mac is started up.
    7) Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html and download the 10.5.4 combo update.
8)You then need to use software update to install all of the updates that came after 10.5. UNCHECK the 10.5.5 Combo Update. You can even select to ignore that update by checking the box next to so that it is selected and then selecting ignore update from the update menu in the menu bar.
I have not tried using Time Machine to go back an OS version. I will experiment with that.
I can also tell you how to clone your drive to another drive using the same DVD as above and two hard drives.
    I hope this helps.

  • Is my ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics card wielded to the MotherBoard?...

Hello guys, I was just needing to know if my ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics card wielded to the MotherBoard, the reason I'm asking is BC I'm needing to upgrade my Video Card to NVidia so that I can get 60 FPS in my Games, right now I'm getting half that which is 30 FPS and sometimes it drops to 4 FPS. LOL can you believe that?, 4 FPS LMAO come on man, somethings gotta be better than ATI Radeon 3100....Hope to hear from you...

I'm just not sure what is going on - that error is what Mac Mini's and others with onboard video have when they try to run FCE/FCP, and there is a workaround mentioned here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1609878
Of course, your MBP has the ATI card, not onboard video.
I did a clean install of FCE 3 HD ( PPC ) and then upgraded immediately to FCE 3.5 HD ( Universal ) and have experienced no problems with it.

RX3870/3850 Series Graphics Card are capable of CrossFireX, K9A Platinum have just CrossFire. I plan too later upgrade to K9APlatinum plus that suld support ADM Spider achritecture. Question is if I will buy in this time two pcs RX3870 will they run at K9A Platinum CrossFire or isn't supported ? Thanks for answer I bought full HD resolution LCD and my present x1950 is not enought for this res. so I need to upgrade. Thanks

I'm quite happy I have so fast responce. It's very hard to find info about that. I learned to trust people at this forum beucase they help me to solve my problem with 4GB RAM. Nothing against you personally but did you seens this somwhere running or some test. Two pcs of H3870 will be quite expensive and I don't want to have than one pcs lie at shelf. Thanks

Well, from what I understood in your post you want to crossfire two 3870 in a K9A Platinum. That's possible because it is a crossfire board and running two 3870 is just normal crossfire.
Spider or crossfire X is the able to run three or four vgas in triple/quad crossfire. That's of course not supported by K9A Plat. You would need a K9A2 Platinum which supports Crossfire X and has the necessary four PCIE Graphic slots.

  • Will the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series Graphics card be capable of outputting at 2560x1440?

I currently have a dell studio 15 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 graphics card, i'm planning to upgrade to an iMac with the same 27 inch display as the one in this forum but i was hoping to continue to use this computer and use the iMacs great display as an external monitor whenever i want to use windows, i was wondering if my graphics card supports such a high resolution or not?
    Thanks

Since I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise, I cannot use Windows Update as it is controlled by WSUS. Anyway, after hours of discussing with the IT experts at my workplace, none of them could solve the problem. They even said I can never run my video card again as it is not compatible with Windows 7.
    But I didn't give up.
After hours of figuring out a solution, I decided to download and try out the "ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows 7 - ThinkPad R400, T400, T500, W500" and guessed what? It worked! The Catalyst center was also installed. Who knew it was the Switchable Graphics Driver when the ATI card was the only one shown in Device Manager to be not working.

I hope this works for all of you who had the same problems as me. Cheers!

  • Switching from ATI to NVIDIA graphic card caused initscript to break

First off, I want to apologize for having to use a random BugMeNot account but the "What is the output of "date -u +%W$(uname)|sha256sum|sed 's/\W//g'"?" question is literally impossible for me to answer as my Arch Linux system will not boot up.
Well, that aside, I've run into a relatively serious problem. I used to have an ATI card in my system, using the catalyst driver and catalyst-hook to make sure it would keep working after kernel updates but then disaster stroke. My power supply died and dragged my graphic card down with it. After bringing it to a PC store for repair, I now have the NVIDIA GeForce GTX550 Ti card in it. All fine and well, until I wanted to start Arch Linux to remove my catalyst driver and install the NVIDIA one. I started the system, the initscript started to run, did a small part of it's tasks and while processing UDev events it started to spit errors regarding noveau and refused to boot up. (It only showed those errors for a very short time, so it's hard to get the exact error message. I've typed it over from an image I took with my mobile phone and the blurry image may make it possible for this to contain typos)
    Error message:

    Things I have tried:
    - Starting Arch Linux fallback
    - Starting Arch Linux on runlevel 1
    - Shouting at Arch Linux in frustration
However, all three things resulted in the exact same issue.
If anyone knows what to do or has even the slightest hint, I'd love to know.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day,
    - TheLastProject

Hm, I'd try to put the nvidia card out and to plug the gfx cable into the socket of your onboard graphics chip, if any.
Then boot into runlevel 3 (text mode) and uninstall the ati drivers. Poweroff, put your nv-card in, boot and install Xorg and the appropriate nvidia driver (just follow the wikis).
If you can't boot into rl3 at all however, edit the grub's command line (or "kernel line") and add single at the and. After booting into runlevel 1 as a single user this way, enter init 3 for rl3. Finally edit /etc/inittab accordingly. -- Alternatively you can edit /etc/inittab with booting your Arch cd, and being chroot'ed.

  • How to tell if an ATI Radeon Pro Graphics card needs any updates?

I have upgraded the firmware on my G4 Gigabit and re-installed the combo update for OS 10.4.11, and am on an update rampage. I am wondering if I need to update driver/firmware for the video card in this computer. It is a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. System Profiler lists its ROM Revision as 113-99703-127.
How to tell if this needs an updated driver? Also, the ATI site lists both a download for ATI Displays Panel, and Retail Update. If I need to update, which is it, or both?
I know nothing about graphics cards.
    Thanks!
    BC

    Hi-
The ATI Displays panel is a handy tool. Install if you like, with no worry as to adverse effects.
Other than that, Tiger has all the drivers that you need. No firmware update is needed, either.
Should be no need for outside updates for the 9000.

  • Will my ATI Radeon x1600 graphics card support Final Cut Express?

In the fall I plan to attend Cincinnati State, and major in AVP (Audio Video Production), and I wanted to get a head start by purchasing the program Final Cut Express. I checked the system specifications, and apparently I need an AGP graphics card. The problem is I have no idea whether or not my ATI Radeon x1600 card will be able to run the program or not. Thank you for your feedback!

  • Mac pro ati radion HD5870 graphics card, is it CUDA ready for 3D Modeling

I would like to move over to MACs from PC but use autocad and 3DStudio. The ATI radion graphics card HD5870 must be CUDA ready for 3D modeling, but the tech description at the online store doesn't confirm if it is CUDA ready.

CUDA is NVIDIA's parallel computing architecture. It enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the GPU.
It is not offered by ATI/AMD Radeon cards.

  • 975X PE + ATI HD2400/2600 Graphic card

I am wondering if the new ATI Radeon HD 2400 (or HD2600) graphic card with integrated audio decoder it will work on 975X PE mobo? I mean, if the sound will work... ATI responed ro my question that , Yes, the sound should work. But it is strange for me, from where the graphic card will take the audio input? There is no need of any additional SPDIF cables/ inputs from the mobo... Maybe the Windows will detect the graphioc card as a separate audio devices? In this case, I should chose between mobo audio and graphic audio..

If the graphics card supports the function, then the ATI drivers should have the capability to support those functions as well. The mainboard will support the graphics card, just the matter of drivers only.

  • ATA 9800 128 Meg Card Vs. OEM Apple ATI 64 Meg Graphics Card?

I'm upgrading a G4 Dual 500 to a Powerlogix Powerforce G4 Dual 1.3 CPU. I'm wondering if an ATI AGP 128 meg graphics card as a replacement to the Apple OEM/ATI 64 meg going to do much for me? Would this push the powersupply too much?
I also have the option of plunking in an ATI 9200 PCI card with 128 meg memory. As you can tell I'm going through my parts bin I'm using a Dell 24" LCD.
Any and all thoughts would be much appreciated!

I was wrong about the ATA 9800, oops it is an ATI 9200. I swapped it for the same card that has 128meg. memory instead of 64meg. X-bench reported little differences in speed.

  • ATI Radeon 4870 Graphic Card - Minor Problems with Icon View

I have a MacPro 2,1 (early 2007)... Recently upgrade graphic card from ATI Radeon X1900 to ATI Radeon 4870... Works fine, except when viewing files in "icon view"... The icons are "fuzzy-like" some pixels are missing... This is seen in any size icon... small or large... or views no problem... cover view, list view, or column view...Does anyone have a working solution for this problem in icon view... Thanks

If ATi didn't specify the card you bought is designed for your Mac, then it's strictly the PC version and is incompatible with OS X. It may work correctly in Bootcamp for Windows, but not for OS X.
Your best option would be to return the 4350 and purchase a "designed for Mac" video card by ATi or nVidia cards offered on the Apple online store.

I just bought a new Mac Pro but upon set-up I realized that I couldn't use my existing Apple monitor that has a ADC connection. I would have to buy the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter. Instead of doing this, could I take the ATI Radeon 9200 out of my old Quicksilver and put it in the new Mac Pro? This older video card has the right kind of connection that I need for this monitor. I could put it in and try but thought I would ask before I did just in case it is not compatible.

The Apple adapter will work for a LCD with ADC, but not for a CRT.

There are no ADC graphics cards that will work in a Mac Pro.
