ATI 9800 - 128mb vs 256mb - speed?

I've come full cycle after discovering the ATI 9600 does not physically fit in my G4 AGP sawtooth because I have now learned that I have an AGP 2x slot. The 9600 is only for 4x and 8x.
So now my choices are between the 128mb card or the 256mb card.
There is of course a difference in price and I'm wondering if there is a siginificant difference in speed and is it worth the money? I'm putting the card in to satisfy Motion's requirements.
I'm running dual 19" Apple Studio Monitors. Does the card split the memory for each monitor?
Ken

ken,
i put the new ati 9800 256 meg card in my ancient 2002 quicksilver. it works, i can get some good things done in motion but it's not splitting the wind by any stretch of the imagination. learn the workarounds like previewing in 1/3 resolution and it's not bad. it can get snail slow depending upon your project.
you will find that if you boot up using only one monitor, the card will devote all the vram to motion and it'll be a little snappier, otherwise it'll split the vram between two monitors. i use two monitors as well but have gotten used to using motion on one monitor.
this card will increase the noise level of your machine a lot. also, i had a card where the fan was failing and was sounding like a bleating cow upon startup. contacted ati, sent the thing back and it was promptly replaced. ati customer service was great.
good luck.

  • NEO2-FIS2R ATI 9800 AIW Pro TV Tuner causes freezes/blue screens. Help!

I recently upgraded my system from P4 2.4Ghz to P4 3.4Ghz Northwood and went from All in Wonder Radeon to 9800 AIW Pro. Only other change worth mentioning is I created a 0+1 RAID using 4 hard drives which were previously configured differently. I watch a lot of TV while I work on the computer. I do a lot of disk writes and data management which ultimately creates a lot of transfering of data between disks. Never was a problem in the old config. BTW, I also use an external HD conntected through USB for data transfers as well.
Immediately, my system went from stable to unstable. I first noticed that the destop redraw on bootup was slower. Then I noticed that the TV had a delayed response on changing channels and changing volume. Switching to another window causes a slow redraw and sometimes causes a jerk in the TV display like a hickup. Other symptoms include blue screens but no driver is referenced. The blue screen otherwise is a normal STOP screen except for the bottom quarter of the monitor which looks like video garble. Sometimes it just reboots. Sometimes, it freezes. I noticed that doing disk transfers while watching TV usually speeds up the behavior. Comparatively, my use of the TV in the old config was transparent regarless of how much I taxed the system.
Anyway, in view of the unexpected behavior, I decided to backup and reinstall the OS from scratch using a vanilla install method. Everything was detected properly, OS installed fine. Installed ATI's latest Catalyst drivers. I turn on the TV and within about 15 minutes of use, the erratic behavior begins. I figured it was a bad card so I exchanged it out. Same thing with the new card. ATI is shrugging their shoulders and pointing at MSI.
I ran hardware tests, updated the MB BIOS to latest available. Tested all four hard drives/RAM. I can't find any hardware issues. I'm very conservative with my BIOS settings so aside from the default values, I have only changed the settings required to allow for a 0+1 RAID config on the Promise controller.
I put my old ATI Radeon back in and ran the TV for hours and had no problems at all. I also swapped my old 2.4 back in with the 9800 AIW Pro and the problem is recreated so that is what has me ruling out the processor.
Here's what the box looks like inside.
    Antec 480 True Blue
    MSI NEO2-FIS2R (w/latest BIOS)
    1GB Corsair VS512MB400 x 2
    4 Maxtor 160GB hard drives, 8MB Cache, 2ea SATA, 2ea PATA
    Intel 3.4Ghz Northwood CPU, 512KB, 800FSB w/Zalman 7700CU HS/F
ATI 9800 AIW Pro 128MB DDR
    Front/Rear 120mm Case Fans
Optical drive, floppy drive, modem card, sound card.
NOTE: All USB ports are being used by devices with their own power supply except for a web camera.  All fans are using power from PSU. No fans use MB power.
I also checked to insure that the AGP card was seated correctly and verified that it was. So, I'm pretty bummed out that I just dropped circa $500 on improving my system but I can't even get it work as well as it used to.
I think I have found the problem but short of getting rid of the 9800 AIW Pro, I am hoping that someone else has had this problem and can help me out. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Good News!!
While the DDR voltage was set to 2.7, I recreated the conditions in which the failures tended to occur. Within minutes, it was obvious that something had changed as I had never gone that far without getting kicked out, freezing up, or blue screening. Since this is looking more and more like a power issue, I decided to leave all of my external USB connections disconnected except for the external hard drive because I normally transfer data back and forth frequently from it.
When I saw that the system was holding up well, I connected the rest of the USB connections. Everything ran OK for a few minutes but then the sound from the TV dropped out while the picture continued to function. Although, this marked another failure, it was a marked improvement over what had been happening previously.
NovJoe suggested tweaking the voltage to 2.7 ~ 2.8 so I upped the voltage to 2.8 and setup the same environment and the machine has run that way for about 3 hours. That one increment seems to have made a difference.
    Questions which come to mind.
    1. If this is a power issue, is it the motherboard's inability to supply the correct voltage to the motherboard components or is it a PSU issue which isn't providing the motherboard enough juice to do its job or a combination of both?
    2. If this issue can be corrected through tweaking voltages, how do you know how far to go before damaging system components?
One of the original symptoms with the TV is still apparent. Upon changing channels, there is a second delay before the sound and picture synchronize. Changing foreground windows also causes a "hickup" in the TV's sound/video. I'm more concerned with what this behavior may mean from a system performance standpoint rather than the annoyance since this is a 9800 AIW Pro and it should be snappy instead of sluggish.
Up the AGP voltage? On that subject, the people here seem to have a lot of background with tweaking the BIOS. I'd appreciate any other ideas in tweaking this system as well.
Ultimately, I have to answer the question of whether I need to get a bigger PSU or can I safely correct my system performance by using BIOS tweaks?
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Ati 9800 pro and VPU recovery

Ever since I got that little issue of the AGP being set to off fixed, I've been getting VPU recoveries fairly often.  I'm at 4x AGP speed.  I'm wondering if this is happing to anyone else and if you guys think the VPU recoveries and nt being able to run at 8x is an issue with my FIC A98P?
    As always, Thanks.
Oh yeah the AGP apature is set to 64mb.

The 9800 is faster than the 9650, but it doesn't have a dual-link DVI port.
Make sure you were looking at the Mac section of ATI's site. PC and Mac versions of the same card may have different port configurations.
AGP cards with dual-link DVI, starting with the fastest:
ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB (ADC, dual-link DVI) (Some reports of problems with Leopard)

  • Can I add a ATI 9800 PRO AGP card?

    Hello,
I am seriously looking at this cool MEGA PC as HT add-on. I am thinking of adding a ATI 9800 PRO card. Can I do it? :O

I don't know if it will fit, but let me say this about those Flex-ATX 200W PSU's.  Don't count the smaller PSU's out.  And don't think that a higher number is better.  Because when it comes down to it,  it's about quality not quantity.
I have a Shuttle SB51G with the ACHME 200W PSU.  Just 200 little watts, but yet it runs 100% stable with the following:
    P4 3.06G @ 145FSB (3.35G)and polished/lapped heatpipe
    Kingston HyperX DDR434 (2x256) @ 2-2-3-5-8 1T
    Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB @ 441/371 and Iceberq4 Cooler
    Pioneer DVR-105 (1.33b unlocked)
    WD1200JB 120GB 8MB Buffer Drive
    Atek Pro III flash reader
2 60mm fans (from Coolermaster Dual P4 Xeon coolers)
    EL Glowing faceplate
    ANTEC Tri-Led fan for heatpipe
Round cold cathode from a cold cathode 80mm fan.

  • ATI 9800 Pro Mac SE - Screen Artifacts and Anomalies

    Hello All,
I was lucky enough to be given a new video card this Christmas (ATI 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition). Unfortunatly I am having some serious issues.
When I frst installed the card in my G5 all seemed well, both my displays appeared to be working properly and I did not notice any problems. The next day I decided to update the ROM on the card to the latest offered by ATI; after doing this I began to notice some horrible screen artifacts and tearing.
    Examples:
    http://static.flickr.com/39/77612780675feadba0o.jpg
    http://static.flickr.com/42/7761277964b07c6811o.jpg
As you can tell from the screenshots above this is not normal.
Here are some details of my Powermac:
    Dual 2.0G5 w/ 3.5 GB of RAM
    Running 10.4.3
    Displays:
23" Apple (plastic) Cinema Display connected via ADC
    17" Sony connected via DVI
    And the ATI card:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R350
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A14402-126
I have attempted to downgrade the firmware on the card to the previous ROM offered by ATI; no luck.
I have taken the normal troubleshooting procedures:
    - Repair permissions
    - Clean caches
    - Repair Disk
    - Reseat video card
    - Install a fresh copy of Tiger on a seperate drive
    - Install different versions of ATI's software (currently using the most up to date)
    - Remove ATI's software
    - Boot into safemode
    - Run one display at a time (first ADC then DVI)
It seems ATI support is out till 12/30; does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks for all your help....

I purchased this card on ebay as a new, unused Apple factory unit, which doesn't require the molex power drop from the superdrive. I've got a 20" aluminum cinema display and a 17" clear CRT studio display connected. My main problem is that I get random app freezing (mostly Safari, sometimes Preview, and occasionally Mail). I can browse with Firefox all day and not have a problem. Console shows nothing unusual, either.
Symptoms: cursor present and movable, but unable to click on anything, Dock icons don't display their names upon rollover, perpetual beachball in frontmost app, high-pitched screech coming from machine somewhere (unless 'Napping' is turned off in CHUD processor pref pane, then normal).
Until this evening, I was under the impression that these were freezes that required a hard restart - I had waited several hours for the symptoms to clear to no avail. Tonight I decided to try something: I pressed the power button on the 20" display, and then pressed the 'S' key to sleep the system (even though I got no feedback on screen). I waited a few seconds and then left the room for a minute or two, and when I came back, the machine was sleeping. I woke it up and found horrible corruption, which corrected itself after another sleep cycle.
I was actually preparing for an archive & install to see if maybe different drivers would be installed that alleviate the issue, but wasn't too hopeful.
    Bizarre...
Now I'm not sure what to do. I haven't been able to use Safari for several weeks due to this. I had thought that since it only seems to happen with Apple apps, that maybe it was a core OS thing that 3rd party apps weren't affected by.

  • Symptons of a Bad ATI 9800?

    Hi Gang
I have an ATI 9800 256MB Pro Mac Edtion. It's noisy as HECK.
Does anyone know if a Video Card (laboring), (going bad), will cause a system freeze/lock up? Failure of a movable cursor, no keyboard functions etc.
Does anyone know how to perform a diagostic test on your video card?
    Thanx
    Mike

I have seen wierd visual lines in the viewer window of Final Cut. Still not sure about that?
I would post that problem on the Final Cut forum.
One application, in a certain process would not convince me that the graphics card is failing.
Again, typically, anomalies will be present in any application, including the Desktop, or in a repeatable manner during any video intensive application.
    A diagnostic temperature tool? Someone suggested this;
Temperature Monitor is a good program. Whether or not it can access the graphics card thermal monitor is another question.
Try and see is all I can say.
Using a physical monitor may be required.
A replacement fan? I'd rather get that Bury Frame Fan you guys were talking about. Becuase it dosen't require a PCI Slot
    Suit yourself.
The bury frame fan may, or may not fit the existing mounting holes in the heatsink.
Though we discussed it in that thread, I would be hesitant to use other than proper physical fastening of the fan to the heatsink.
The Vantec fan that I linked, will not encroach on the PCI slot next to the graphics card. At 15mm, it is very low profile.
Copper also has better thermal conductivity than aluminum, and the fan is quieter than most available of similar size.
Or maybe I'll just get a brand new Video Card?
Always an option, each with cooling needs that may not have readily available options.

  • Correct Resolution for HDTV via DVI and ATI 9800

I have a gigabit G4 400 and a sharp aquos 26in lcd tv. I bought a used ATI 9800 pro mac edition 128mb version. I have it cabled HDMI to DVI. So far it works fairly well, but its taken quite a few setting revisits. I'm having some resolution issues. The tv itself is supposed to only be a 720p at its highest do to the physical size. The card has the ability to go higher then that and it goes into 1080i mode, but it doesn't look as good. The smoothest setting was 1024x540 but the screen objects are to big still. 1344x756 is near the native size but not exactly (should be 1366x768) and it looks pretty good, but text is a little hard to read and kind of jagged looking. Its like you can't sit as far, but not as close as a regular display. One of the problems that I keep having is that the interlace goes weird periodically and I don't know why. It seems to happen on most of the resolutions after switching settings or resolutions from say the itunes visualizer (whichs looks way cool on the tv btw) or coming out of sleep. Then I have to go into ati displays and toggle a setting the causes the display go black for a sec then comes back fine again. I'm wondering if I need to get a component to dvi adapter instead of going the hdmi since I'll be able to force it to go no larger the 720p.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Why are you not trying to use the DVI to DVI?
The reason the card output of 1080i does not look as
good is because the tv is downgrading the sigal to
720p since that is its max.
My tv doesn't have DVI only HDMI, but I have a HDMI to DVI cable.
So even though the tv is only supposed to capable of 720p, the card pushes it higher, then the tv the downgrades the signal again? The tv itself says 1080i when I switch it over to the HDMI input whereas my directv input signal says 720p.
This a possible ATI driver issue (not supporting that
res)or maybe a hz synch issue? The DVI port of the TV
is meant for HDCP so if may have the feedback needed
by the vid card for proper synching.
Very curious to see what you do, because I am looking
to do the exact same thing.
I have a DA with a Mac 9800 Pro and want to replace
my 20" ACD with a 26" LCD tv that can double as my
monitor vs buying a usb tv input device for the DA.
    G4 DA DP 533, 1.25G
Ram, 250G Sata hdd, DVDBurner     G4 iBook
    800
Check the native resolution of the tv you're considering. It didn't dawn on me till later, but my 17in flat panel imac g4 has a better native resolution then the 26in tv. so even though its bigger, not really gaining any extra space.

  • Coverflow crashing Mac using ATI 9800 and Tiger

just gave my MDD dual G4 a birthday and installed an ATI 9800 pro mac edition card and moved from Panther to Tiger, however I have a problem:
first of all let me say, I have 2 monitors connected to my mac using 2 separate graphics cards, ie 1 screen per card, my other card is a PCI ATI 7000 32mb and the problem I am about to describe does not happen on the ATI 7000 card/monitor it works perfectly fine.
problem: iTunes displayed on the new 9800 pro card if I try to switch to coverflow mode my mac completely freezes, dead, requiring a reboot, however if I move iTunes over to my other monitor it works just fine which leads me to think that its a bug with the 9800 and Tiger?
needles to say I have rebuilt my iTunes library and loaded the latest drivers for my graphics cards, and OSX is bang up to date:
    anyone else get this problem?

btw both monitors connected by DVI

  • Upgrade SNAFU - MDD/ATI 9800 Pro/Flat Panel Display

I've been adding to my MDD and been caught overlooking the fact that my Apple ADC monitor doesn't connect to my ATI 9800 Pro. ADC, DVI, VGA .... whats next
Anyway, is there a connector or adapter I can get to 'bridge' this last hurdle?
Sometimes with Google you need to know exactly what you are looking for in order to get the right results. My results didn't produce what I was looking for.
    Thank you

Go to the Apple Store, look under "Displays". Then look for the "Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter". Costs $99. But that's what will do it with LCD ADC displays. Dr. Bott used to make (and may still make) the DViator which accomplishes the same thing. Both have big bricks which supply the juice to your ADC monitor -- in fact the DVIator uses the PSU for a Cube.
I mention LCD monitor with ADC because both don't work the ADC CRT monitor. I know you have flat panel in the subject of your post; I mention that for other who might come across this thread.

  • G4 quicksilver and ati 9800 xt - please help me! :)

    Hi
First of all sorry for my bad English... is not my first Language...I speak italian
I have a problem with my old power mac g4 quicksilver: i bought a used but in well conditions Ati 9800 xt video card with 256 mb of vram.
The guy from i bought it says that the video card works on a Mirrored Drive Doors perfectly AND that it is an original OEM Apple vga and not a flashed pc version...
My quicksilver is the first model, with g4 at 867 mhz, 1gb of ram pc133, 80 gb of hdd and the original vga card is an nvidia geforce2 with 32 mb vram.
The problem is: when I put the 9800 in the case and power on nothing appears... From the speaker I hear the "startup" sound (bong) but nothing else... black screen, no hdd sound, no light from mouse or keyboard..
Obviously if I install the old vga all starts perfectly...
Any ideas? Someone can help me?

    Hi
First thanx a lot for your reply
I already know the guide you posted and the original owner of the graphic card used the third method of the guide (he tells).. in fact in his mirrored drive d. the 9800 works well! The problem is in my quicksilver
Is it possible that I am installing in a wrong way my card? Here some photos...
    Installed:

In 2. G5 von 2003 geht die Karte einfach wunderbar. Ich hofe das Ich damit helfe den Tausenden da draussen die gleiche Problem haben vor allem in Apple forum, und keiner hat Lösung.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • Render time reduction with ATI 9800?

I'm expecting an ATI 9800 pro mac video card any day now.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows if LIVE TYPE hands off rendering to the GPU on the 9800 card or if that process stays on the CPU.
I'm really wondering if the card will improve LT rendering times.
    Any thoughts?

Not in this iteration of the application.
Maybe the next rev will include GPU hooks.

  • Confused over ATI 9800 Pro

I know this is somewhat off topic for this forum but I didn't know where else to post this question. I want to upgrade my woefully inadequate FX5200 to an ATI 9800 Pro but need dual monitor support (non gaming). I know the 9800 Pro has both a VGA connector and DVI connector but their HydroVision software is required to make a dual monitor setup work correctly. ATI's web site for Hydravision support(http://ati.com/companyinfo/glossary/hydravision/products.html) does not show support for any 9000 series ATI card. Does anyone here know if Hydravision is supported for this card?

If memory serves, the two cards are identical in hardware, the only difference being the bios. Thus, you can turn a pro into an XT with relative ease. Let me note that I have not done this, so I don't speak from specific experience.
That said, you might want to hold out for the new nvidia card if you'll be able to afford it. The reviews of the Geforce 6800 ultra show it to be close to 100% faster than current high end chips. You're reading that right--it's close to twice as fast as anything on the market right now. After seeing those numbers, I had to spend an hour crawling around on the ground trying to find my eyes.

  • ATI 9800 not peforming with board

I have been happy with this MSI board since i got it, but i have had one constant problem, and that is the ATI card not performing well. I have done 3Dmark03 and acheived a LOWLY score of 2700, but my CPU was over 700 of that, which is great. The card is still on default settings, and I havent changed a thing on it. I have DLed Rage3DTweak, but havent touched it yet... I have latest catalyst drivers (4.3) and BIOS 1.9 on my board right now. I have tried to read into this problem that other are having, but none is that same as mine. I am supposed to be getting scores of over 5000 on 3Dmark03 but yet i get 2700.. i also did Aqaumark, and they were also horrendous... i dont know exactly why this is, but ill tell you my situation..
    1) i have it in the slot all the way.. checked that
    2) i have enough power (450 W)
    3) drivers installed and seems to work ok, until high end software comes into play
    4) have AGP voltage at 1.6, and OCing usuing DOC (Private mode)
please give me a starting point to fix this problem.. thank you

ok let me put my input into this as the other guys seem knowledgeable but really havent offered you any solid advice.

"BIOS is overclocking your vidcard for you"  THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT FRIGGIN TRUE AND FOR YOU TO EVEN TELL THIS GUY THAT IS TOTAL B.S.
under no circumstances does overclocking your CPU or FSB or RAM or ANYTHING cause your video card o be overclocked the only way to overclock your video card is with the OVerdrive utility in the ATI control Panel ot with a 3rd party application like Rage3d.

Take the card back , i can say with 100% confidenc that the Green spec's your seeing are either 1 - heat related or 2 - bad ram on your video card.
now check a few things for me and we will go from there.
your card is running at 69C  yeah thats HOT,  thats too hot for playing some games and running 3dmark.
what about your CPU,, go into the bios after you run a test , and go directly to the PC HEalth section of the bios and look at the temps. i mean do this QUICK we dont want to waste time as the cpu will cool down.
what are yout temps for the CPU ?
take the side door off your pc case,, run 3dmark    now put your hand down DIRECTLY over the top of the video card does the card seem HOT ? like omg i better not get any closer ? or does it just seem warm ?
now take your fingertip and touch the ram,, if the ram is HOT you will know it,, it will be VERY hot.
PLEASE if you have an anti static strap wear it before you touch the video card as we dont want you zapping the card and destroying it with a static discharge.
with the new motherboard and ram and such USUALLY artifacts arent caused by CPU  its caused by the video card,, mainly because the videocard handles all the graphics. so i dout its your CPU but please check the temps and make sure its cool.  if you run the test and go to the bios and the CPU says something like 55-60+ Deg Celcius then yeah your cpu is getting wAY too hot. ther eis no way that your CPU should be that hot from simply running 3dmark.
i still say 69C is WAY too hot for a Videocard, but i have never tested temps on a video card..  if it were a CPU and you said it was 70C then i would tell you  to shut off your PC RIGHT NOW before you burn your CPU.  you might want to talk to someone more knowledgeable about videocard temps .   what is the "DangerZone"  in the ATI control panel for Temp's ?  (id kinda like to know)
im pretty confident that the problem is coming from your video card, whether its bad ram or the card isnt cooling enough. i dont know.  your probably just better off taking it back and getting another one.
also while your hand is down by the video card,, take your finger and reach under it and touch the fan on he video card, make sure the fan is spinning,, if its not,, well take the card back.
please let us know what happens.
also,, before i forget,, do you have the 128 meg ATI 9800 pro or the 256 meg 9800 pro ?
64meg is not the proper setting for AGP in the bios,, i dont know why its working better but thats not right.
if you have the 256 meg 9800 change it to 256 see what happens.
you should always have your AGP Memory in the bios the same as the memory on the video card, any more can cause problems and less usually causes the card to run slowly,, again i dont know why it works better for you,,,
also turning off fast writes and write combining isnt going to take away green artifacts or cause them,,,  its just not the way fast writes work.
green artifacts are caused from heat or bad video ram. (or a overheated cpu but i dont think thats it)
