ATI and blackscreen death...

community,
I have a HD4250 IGP (R620) w/ athlon 2 x4.
Yesterday, before turning off the pc I've pacmaned Syu, thus making my system inoperable today. I'm using proprietary catalyst drivers, the latest I could find.
Symptoms are : black screen, no keyboard. When I've added acpi=off while doing a manual boot from grub, I've got a screen with dmesg's and a keyboard-unresponsive box.
I'm not able to edit any of the configuration files as of right now, I don't have an optical drive to run a livecd. I've also tried to create an arch-usb to run live, but to no success. I've tried to access the partition w/ windows 7, but the darn thing doesnt recognize ext2/ext3 even though I have the proper tools installed... (when it comes to writing things. reading was easy w/ diskinternals or whatnot....)
Thus, I'm stuck with win7. Help?

I have the exact same problem, new Arch system working for 8 days, now X wont start.
I've booted to init 3, and if I manually type startx all I get is a black screen with a single underscore, keyboard does
not respond, neither does ctrl-alt_F1.   I cant kill X server with ctrl-alt-backspace so have to reboot.
In my case Xorg.log is empty but posting from another linux system I have found this in /var/log/messages

Not sure what this means, but last line states graphics system exited.
I am using ATI HD5770 with proprietary catalyst driver which I have tried reinstalling and
running
aticonfig --initial
This has not fixed the problem.
In addition I boot with grub legacy and watch kernel messages scroll. I used to get
four "Arch" symbols, now I see four "penguins representing each core.
Other hardware
Intel i5 750
ATI HD5770
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
4G  DDR3
Prior to this blackscreen Arch was running smoothly and although I have started at
console and tried pacman -Syu  I cannot resolve this problem.
I will try open source ATI drivers next,  see if this helps.
( To mods I hope I have not hijacked piotroxp' s  post if so please move this post).

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.
    Martin

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

  • White Screen: xf86-video-ati and Compiz After Trying fglrx? [SOLVED]

I have an ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card.  I recently tired the ATI proprietary catalyst driver (and catalyst-utils) from the AUR.  They did not work well for me, so I uninstalled them.  I had run "aticonfig -initial" but, after removing catalyst and catalyst-utils I restored my old xorg.conf.  For some reason, with xf86-video-ati set up again, compiz starts, but goes to a white screen.  I can see and move my cursor.  Everything functions normally, I just can't see anything.  I right clicked my desktop and created folders as a test.  When I rebooted without compiz, the clicks had been received and folders had been created.  How can I fix this?  I'm using Gnome (if that means anything).  Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Fixed It!!  I had to reinstall xorg, mesa, libgl, xf86-video-ati, and ati-dri for some reason.

  • [solved] Radeon/Ati and Xorg 1.9

    Hi,
since I've upgradede my ati driver (xf86-video-ati) and X to X 1.9 I cannot start my X session, because of the following issue:
Failed to map cursor buffer memory
    Fatal server error:
    failed to map pixmap -22
XIO fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server 0:0
In the very beginning after having upgraded, I obtained in addition the error of unknown synaptic devices (mouse and touchpad), but in one of the forum threads it was solved and thus I could fix it.(sry link is missing)
But the one error above is still unsolved, and hinders me starting X. Mr. Google couldn't help enymore.
Downgrading is not possible, because of the missing packages...
I hope one of you can help me get X on the screen.
    best,
    L-K
    [EDIT]
I compiled from git and now xf86-video-ati-git works well. maybe the version in [extra] differs from that git-version in AUR.
    Ty for reading.

The kind people from the IRC channel suggested I add this bit at the very end of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file (instead of "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf" - tho it would've probably worked that way too):
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us, ro"
    Option "XkbVariant" "std"
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:caps_toggle, grp_led:scroll"
    EndSection
Apparently it works. I just have to hold AltGr and press s, q , a, i, t, etc to type ș â ă î ț etc. But how do I set it to ; { } ] ' ", etc, like the default behaviour in Windows... ? I would like them to correspond to this layout.
Because this is not the "standard" ("std") version...
I may have to edit the "/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ro" file to map them.
    Unless there's a better way ?

  • Driver for nvidia, ati and intel

    Hi,
I have successfully installed archlinux on a usb drive.
It works on every computer  with ati or intel graphics card but when I know want to install the nvidia driver it complains about a dependencie of the ati and intel one.
So I have the choice between nvdia or intel and ati. Is there a way to make the usb stick work on ati, intel and nvidia?
    Regards

archer42 wrote:How does as example ubuntu solve this issue?
They don't. They use nouveau. You can tell the installer to install the nvidia driver from their "restricted" repository, but you do so at the expense of the intel and ati drivers, just like in Arch.
There's one thing... if you don't care about 3d acceleration, you can simply force-uninstall libgl, intel-dri, ati-dri. Then you can have nvdia, intel and ati at the same time. But 3d accel will only work on nvidia, of course.
Gentoo is (I think) the only one with a full solution - their eselect mechanism. Their mesa and nvidia-drivers ebuilds install GL libs in different places, so they don't conflict. Then eselect switches around some symlinks and plays with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. You still have to manually use eselect ("eselect opengl set nvidia" or "eselect opengl set xorg-x11"), but at least you can have all packages installed at the same time.

  • My laptop become blue screen after windows logo, after i update the graphic ati and intel driver

I have constant blue screen after windows logo and i have updated all drivers. i was upset the blue screen didn't go away and i did the factory reset. For my suprise, it didn't solve the problem and then i repair it at the comp shop. it was installed with windows 7 home premium 64 (pavilion g4 1006tx) bit as the pre installed windows and activated with the key back on sticker. I updated all drivers and i noticed every time i update the ati and intel driver it will go blue screen after windows logo. after i uninstall it at in safe mode it can load normally. My question is there any solution for my graphic card or is it already damaged? or any other hardware problem? please because i have to use high graphic as i use photoshop

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 in 3D?

Any one else heard this rumor? I saw it on a news site earlier, but couldn't access the actual page because it tried to make my computer die...and MuggleNet is blocked at work...
Any information, thoughts about it , etc?
Don't take what I say as being absolute. There's always room for improvement.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog is reporting that Warner Bros. will release both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 3D. The article reads:
"Early 3D-conversion tests on Warners' remake of 'Clash of the Titans' have gone so well that -- combined with boosted enthusiasm for 3D in the wake of the 'Avatar' tsunami -- the Burbank studio has decided to release not only 'Titans' but also the two-part 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' in 3D."
The cost of transferring each film to 3D will be roughly $5 million. The company will pay an additional $5 million per picture for 3D glasses to theaters handling the movies.
Please treat this all as a rumor until we receive confirmation from Warner Bros.

  • What happened to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1?

It is no longer available for purchase on the iTunes store, yet there's a broken link to it and part 2 is available for preorder.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/charts/movies/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-p art-1/
It is also available on Amazon as an instant download.

I suspect you're right about licensing, because the same thing has happened with most of the earlier Harry Potter films. They appeared in the iTunes Store on or about the DVD release date, then disappeared until approximately the next movie's DVD release date. I'm sure Deathly Hallows 1 will reappear eventually.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro X - Canadian ATI and Privacy Act Redaction Code Sets

    Hi,
Could anyone tell me if there are any redaction code sets for the Canadian ATI and Privacy Acts, like the U.S. FOIA and U.S. Pricacy Act code sets?
    Thank you.
    D.

    Hi Dominic ,
Please be informed that by default Acrobat supports the following two redaction code sets .
    1.U.S.FOIA
    2.U.S.Privacy Act .

  • Why isn't Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 for sale, but Part 2 is?

Why isn't Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 available for sale, but Part 1 is? This makes no sense.

    Jennie,
Items often go on and off sale in the Store, especially items (like Harry Potter movies) whose distribution is being closely managed by the label, in this case Warner Brothers.
It will probably come back on sale, but we don't know when.  If you don't want to wait, you can buy it on DVD.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Does anyone know why Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is not available in the ITunes Store? Part 2 is available, but not Part 1. Why?

But I purchased Part One through iTunes.  It's here on my hard drive.  But it's not appearing in the iTunes store.  I found an outside link here:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/charts/movie-rentals/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-ha llows-part-1/
When you click it, it tells you that this item is not available in the US store.  In iTunes on my computer both the movie and the iTunes extras are showing as an Unknown Album.  Makes it much harder to find in my library.
    What's going on?

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is available on Box office from 5th December, is there any chance BT will also run Part 1 as well so we can see both.
    Del.

I think if they had the rights they would. Do you know that for £20 you can get all eight films including the above as a box set from Amazon?

  • Where's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1?

I'd like to rent Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 but it seems to be missing from iTunes.  I actually thought I rented it there before.  What happened to it? Why can't I rent it now?

A bunch of people have asked this recently.  The distributor, Warner Borthers, has for the moment taken Part1 off sale, for reasons that are entirely up to them.
It will likely come back on sale at a future date, although we can't say when.
In the meantime, you may wish to pick it up on DVD.
