ATI and multiple cards (Radeon 4850)

I'm looking to set up a triple/quad monitor configuration using my 2 ATI radeon 4850s and arch (64 bit) I was pleasantly suprised that simply installing the xf86-video-ati driver was sufficient to get 2 of my 4 monitors working with apparently-acceptable 2d and 3d support right out of the box! Is there any hope, however, of getting my other two monitors working in a similar fashion, or am I stuck with my 2-monitor configuration? I had a 4 monitor setup under OpenSUSE and the ATI catalyst proprietary driver, but I'm beginning to believe it a lost cause under arch. Any thoughts or experiences to the contrary?

the open source driver should be working for you, you have probably to create a xorg.conf and specify the "BusID" option in your "device" section. Check this site for an exapmple.

I have a ATI 5870 (offiical, from apple store) in slot 1 and a NVidia GT120 (came with purchase) in slot 2, I want the computer to do the processing with the faster, bigger, better, I-paid-lot-of-money-for-this 5870, but things like Cinema 4D seem to want to use the GT120. I'm no expert on the technical side of thing, I just look at the cinebench and OpenGL info which all say GT120...
Any tips on how to mane the 5870 the "main GPU" card, I commonly use more than 3 displays in the area of work I'm in so would prefer not to have to keep putting in / taking out the card.

By defualt my main 2 screen run into the 5870, but when I view the OpenGL info in C4D it shows that the GT120 is doing the GPU work, and there is no sign of the 5870, but when the GT120 is removes it uses the 5870...

ATI and Nvidia cards together?

Is it possible to run an Nvidia card with an ATI card simultaneously? I have a 2007 mac pro with the stock 7300gt. I need another graphics card for a third monitor and would like to purchase the new ATI 3870. Does anyone here have an Nvidia and ATI card running together? Are there any issues? Thanks.

With respect, I think you confused it. I replied to dualrecto's question. As I didn't want to assume what he meant, I took the opportunity to answer to it in relation to both OS X and Windows. His question concerned the 7300 and the 3870, not the latter and 8800.
I haven't seen any info that the 8800 and the 3870 could run together in OS X. However, as was written in the Macnn post that I linked to in the second of the two Apple Discussions links you included, the "no-mixing of video card rule" apparently doesn't apply to the newer Mac Pros. Since the ATi 2600 and the nVidia 7300 work simultaneously under OS X perhaps the 8800 and the 3870 will also work under OS X (and saying that, perhaps it will be possible to run also the combo dualrecto is seeking).
Whether you should switch to the 3870: I guess it depends on what you want to use the cards for. The 8800 is superior in 3D rendering provided the application can take advantage of it's OpenGL functions. Which is why it does well as a gaming card. [Solved] alsaequal, dmix and multiple cards

I have a speaker set with quite heavy bass which is why I turn down the lower frequencies with alsaequal. This works quite well with the asoundrc-configuration in the wiki. Now I bought an usb-headset and I want to change between these two soundcards.
The problem is that I don't know how to tell alsa to use dmix _and_ my onboard soundcard _and_ alsaequal. Whenever I specify my soundcard it deactivates dmix. When I specify dmix it uses the default soundcard (with index 0) and not the one I want...

Well, got that solved (not for the flood of replies here in the forum ;-) )
The trick was to create an own dmix-device (obvious), specify the card there, use it in alsaequal _and_ set a working buffer size (not obvious). Apparently my card and/or dmix need a working buffer-size. I found a hint in the alsa-wiki, though. http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Dmix# … E1712_chip

I have two asoundrcs in my homefolder and copy them over to .asoundrc per some alias when I want to switch. Not the most comfortable solution but at least I only need one command and _it works_.

Xorg with Both Radeon and Nouveau Cards

I seem to be having a problem getting my two cards to play nice with each other. They will both work by themselves and are detected properly. I seem to have a mistake in my configuration file when configuring the second screen. I did start with the example from the Xorg wiki page. If someone could please take a look at my Xorg.conf file and spot my error, I would appreciate it.
I am using the OSS drivers first, but would like to use the proprietary nVidia driver once I get this working, but one step at a time.

When I look at the log file, it seems to load both cards OK, but then it always unloads the second one after the "(EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section." entry.

So it seems that nouveau only supports dual head using Randr (source). I removed the "Screen x" lines from 10-monitor.conf and both cards fired up at once. So, it looks like I will need to try this using the driver from Nvidia.
What's interesting is that I cannot have the proprietary Nvidia driver with xf86-video-ati, even though it is shown here. Am I missing something here or is that wiki section in error?
I will try using an alternate ATI driver tomorrow.

Wondering if I should return my un-opened iMac with ATI Radeon 4850??

Just got my iMac with the ATI Radeon 4850 and wondering if I should return because of all the problems I have been reading about and just go to an Apple store and get the iMac with a GT 130.
I haven't opened it yet, will Apple charge me a restocking fee? And will Apple pay for return shipping if I mention the reason I am returning is all the issues I have been reading about concerning the 4850?
Any opinions will be appreciated!!

I would not base my decision on what I read in the forum. People who have issues generally post topics and replies to report problems. All the people who are having no problems will not bother to post to say +everything is fine and I'm happy+.
You should contact Apple directly to find out their policy on returns, and whether it makes a difference if you opened the package or not.

But here the horror begins... Any time I switch to virtual console (Alt+Ctrl+Fn), then goes back to X and try to move a window everything freeze except mouse. The only way out is hard reset. By the way, I've notcied that it happens when loading "dri" module. But without "dri" there is no direct rendering. Is there any way to have "dri" and non-freezeing X-server?

ATI Radeon 4850 Driver

My iMac (11, 1) runs VERY slowly running Nik Color Efex Pro. Nik tech support suggested I check to ensure that I'm running the most recent driver for my ATI Radeon 4850 card. The driver version is 01.00.383. Is this the up to date driver for the card?

Adjustments to some filters using the Color Efex adjustment sliders take excessively long to apply. A "calculating" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen during the delay. In the case of some filters (Dynamic Skin Softener, et. al.) this can occur for 3+ minutes, as long as 10 minutes before I quit the program. I've seen two other posts about this problem with iMac configurations similar to mine. One poster had a lengthy email exchange with Nik but hasn't yet resolved the problem. Nik acknowledged to the poster that they were seeing "some of this" software issue in comments from users.

Getting the GPU temp on a Radeon Card, and is a Radeon X850 PRO 256MB PC card flashable for use in Mac G5?

I decided to post this as a new topic since it really didn't belong on the tail end of my X800 XT thread of woe...
Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac? I have done quite a bit of looking online and have come up with nothing. Strange, since this is usually a concern for all computer owners.. I don't even care if it's unstable, beta, hack city.
The second part of this question is: I have a PC AGP video card "Radeon X850 PRO 256MB", and I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
The card looks a lot like the X800 XT, except for the chip on the underside of the card that says "ATI Rage Theater" on it.

Possibly. BUT, it won't output digital, which is what you need to use a DVI to ADC adapter.
All flashed Radeon X800/X850 will only output analog.
A flashed FireGL X3 , using a Mac Radeon X800XT ROM will output both ports digital, and one of those is also dual link DVI (in case one wants a 30" Cinema Display).
That's the only flashed X800 that outputs digital.
If you're going the adapter route, consider an OEM or a flashed Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra.
The Ultra actually out performs the X800XT in some areas, with the GT not far behind.
A flashed Geforce 6800 GT can be a real performance value, often times a bargain.

Apple has acknowledged that the "no sim card" message has been a problem for some users. iOS 5.1 is reported by MacWorld to resolve this issue. 5.1 is in development and a beta version has been seeded to developers. In the meant time I suggest contacting Apple.

Your video card driver may be fine for something, but just not compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
For those with the display card error, the answers include
a. assure your video card/graphics card driver version is up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card -
if necessary consider a driver roll back.
b. determine in Device Manager/Display Adapters if the computer is using 2 cards instead of 1
c. delete the BadDrivers.txt file
the rationale for that deletion is found in post 10 of the following older post...principle applies to 13 as well as 9.

[solved] Radeon/Ati and Xorg 1.9

Hi,
since I've upgradede my ati driver (xf86-video-ati) and X to X 1.9 I cannot start my X session, because of the following issue:
Failed to map cursor buffer memory
Fatal server error:
failed to map pixmap -22
XIO fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server 0:0
In the very beginning after having upgraded, I obtained in addition the error of unknown synaptic devices (mouse and touchpad), but in one of the forum threads it was solved and thus I could fix it.(sry link is missing)
But the one error above is still unsolved, and hinders me starting X. Mr. Google couldn't help enymore.
Downgrading is not possible, because of the missing packages...
I hope one of you can help me get X on the screen.

I compiled from git and now xf86-video-ati-git works well. maybe the version in [extra] differs from that git-version in AUR.

The kind people from the IRC channel suggested I add this bit at the very end of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file (instead of "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf" - tho it would've probably worked that way too):

Apparently it works. I just have to hold AltGr and press s, q , a, i, t, etc to type ș â ă î ț etc. But how do I set it to ; { } ] ' ", etc, like the default behaviour in Windows... ? I would like them to correspond to this layout.
Because this is not the "standard" ("std") version...
I may have to edit the "/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ro" file to map them.
Unless there's a better way ?

Comments
1) It is blazing fast
2) While this works on 64bit, I don't think 32bit would be much different to setup
3) Using the latest ATI drivers are important because they support the new Windows 7 driver model (WDDM 1.1). While older versions may work (like bootcamp 2.1), they won't be the most advanced or fastest performing.
4) While I haven't been able to install the bootcamp software (Win7 warns that it is incompatible), from what I've read (all the posts about DPC latency), it is probably better off for performance
5) Your mileage may vary, I haven't tested this on anything other than my 24" radeon 4850 iMac. I also haven't tested it on 32bit, so don't blame me if something doesn't work right. Basically, if you break something it isn't my fault
6) Bluetooth pairing is somewhat quirky, it usually goes pretty quickly for the mouse. Sometimes it will take multiple tries (canceling out, and starting again, etc) especially for the keyboard. Once everything is paired though it works perfect without any extra drivers.
7) Remember this isn't supported by Apple yet.
