ATI Catalyst 13.3 beta 2 Poisonous to Photoshop CS6

Last night I installed the new ATI Catalyst 13.3 beta 2 driver.  The 13.2 betas had worked seemingly okay.  But with 13.3 beta 2, Photoshop CS6 13.1.2 crashes in Advanced mode when any document is opened...

I'm still trying things, to see if there are workarounds, or modes in which it works, but for now, my advice:
Avoid installing Catalyst 13.3 beta 2.
I'll follow up here when I learn more.

One manifestation of this new driver version is that Photoshop CS6 now thinks there is an insane amount of VRAM...
This is a problem that showed up in Catalyst 12.10 and persisted through 13.1, then was miraculously solved in 13.2 betas.  Now it has returned.
And from what I've been able to see during testing, it crashes Photoshop in all GPU accelerated modes, not just Advanced.
Here's what sniffer_gpu reports:

A complete reset of all preferences makes no difference - Photoshop still crashes with any GPU mode.
It also crashes Photoshop CS5.

  • ATI Catalyst 13.1 - Not Good with Photoshop CS6 13.0.1

I installed Catalyst 13.1 last night.
On Windows 7 x64 and Photoshop CS6 13.0.1  I still see the GPU-based color-management issue noted in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1093163?tstart=0
    Some workarounds:
Configure Photoshop to Basic GPU mode and wait for a Photoshop update to potentially fix it so Normal or Advanced mode can be used again.
Uninstall Catalyst 13.1 and install 12.8 specifically (which works okay with Photoshop CS6).  After testing a bit further this is probably what I'm going to do.
There may be a problem with the reporting of the VRAM size to Photoshop.  I'm not sure what's up, but I have 2GB of VRAM on my ATI 7850, and 2GB was the full amount reported to Photoshop by Catalyst 12.8.  With Catalyst 13.1 in place, however, I see the following.  Worse yet, the number seems to vary.
Also, there seems to be a problem now with the implementation of the Windows power policy - specifically the power-down of the monitors on inactivity.  They do power-down when left idle, but then they power back up again in a few moments.
I have not found a workaround for this issue yet, save for punching the actual power buttons on the monitors.
I found no speed increase or other compelling reason to upgrade to 13.1 in any case.  I think that release must be all about gaming and nothing more.
My recommendation, at least until Adobe releases an update that works around the color black-out problem, is to avoid updating to Catalyst 13.1.
    -Noel

In all seriousness, I do prefer things that work.
For 5 years or so ATI was on top of the quality heap - long enough that I bought a 4670, 5670, and just recently a 7850 card.  However, the last 6 to 8 months have been markedly worse, and unless some kind of major turnaround happens, I am starting to think that ATI is moving down the list, making way for nVidia to dominate.  I have heard that AMD in general is having financial troubles.
In my long career in software engineering, having many PCs (and having run departments full of engineers with PCs), I have seen a number of different graphics manufacturers dominate the industry at various times...  Matrox, nVidia, ATI...  Maybe it's just nVidia's time to shine again.
Assuming you are speaking of "jumping ship" at a higher level to Apple, that thought has crossed my mind, but in all seriousness I don't think you lot have much better a time of it overall.  Reference recent Mac-only problems with Photoshop licensing/activation for example.  At the moment I enjoy the greater control the PC environment gives me over what I choose to integrate together.
Perhaps it sounds as if "things are bad" for me, but they're not really.  For one thing, Catalyst 12.8 really does work pretty well.  My system goes for weeks between reboots and I rarely get application crashes.  Testing these drivers is something I need to do to keep abreast of problems my own software customers, who use my GPU-accelerated plug-ins, may encounter.  Fortunately with the newest Catalyst drivers I've found no problems with my own software, which uses the GPU differently than Photoshop (in these modern times, it's a certainty that no two applications use the GPU in quite the same way).
By the way, I am no fanatic - In addition to two desktop Dell workstations and one laptop Dell PC, I have in the family a Macbook, three iPads, and an AppleTV.  Like I said, I like things that work.

  • I manually uninstalled Photoshop CS6 Beta, and now Photoshop CS6 won't install.

Before I read the FAQ on how to properly uninstall the Photoshop CS6 Beta, I uninstalled it manually (by dragging it into the Trash on Mac OS X), and now when installing the CS6 Master Collection, Photoshop appears with an [!] that says "a conflicting or prerelease version of Photoshop CS6 is present on this computer. This must be removed before the installation can continue." I've tried deleting every file I can find with "Photoshop" in it, but to no prevail. What can I do?

    Jeff,
    The URL is:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4361731#4361731%234361731
I'd just add a line under:
Navigate to your /Applications/Photoshop CS6 folder
    to check Applications/Utilities/...
    for the other uninstaller.

  • Improper Photoshop CS6 beta uninstall prevents Photoshop CS6 release version install

I installed Photoshop CS6 beta on my Mac, OS 10.6.8. Once I purchased and went to install CS6, the installer informed me to uninstall the beta version of Photoshop, but didn't say how, or that there was a catch. I went and uninstalled Photoshop CS6 beta bny dragging it to the trash. OOPS! - now the release version won't install, and I can't find anyhting on the Adobe website other than private messages from Adobe employees to specific users with the same problem as to how to rectify the issue.
Aside from venting my frustration at a situation I (and others have found ourselves in that could have been prevented by a little better planning and installer design, I'd really appreciate help in rectifying this state of affairs. It looks from other Forum posts like there is a tool or procedure that cvan be used to make the install work. Thanks in advance -
    Michael Bade

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 will not install on my Mac.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 will not install on my Mac. Adobe Application Manager is seeing the Beta version of Photoshop CS6 on my machine.
I have unistalled/deleted any previous versions of the software, and used the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner tool to flush my machines. Sadly,
I am still getting the following error:
    Photoshop CS6 Installation Failed
A beta version of this product exists on the computer. Please quit and uninstall that version before continuing.
I have unistalled/deleted any previous versions of the software, and used the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner tool to flush my machines. I am now stuck!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,

It's strange that you ran the cleaner tool and still didn't worked
you can try to login to Root user account and then run the cleaner tool , and then check.

  • Camera raw 7-2 refuses to install into Photoshop CS6

trying to install camera raw 7-2 beta release into Photoshop CS6 on MacBook Pro, OSX 10.8.1.  Installation commences, then I get Error Code: U44M2P15. I have tried new downloads of camera raw, restarting the Mac to no avail. Any ideas???   I need this release to view Sony ARW files generated by the new Sony DMC RX100 camera. Thanks for any assistance!

Thanks for your assistance Jeff. I wish it was so simple.  I ended up on the Adobe customer chat where some very kind techs helped me out. The issue was ultimately resolved by reinstalling CS6.
This was way more complicated than it sounds!  I ran the photoshop 6 uninstaller, which encountered an error. Following the online error advice, I then installed the Adobe cleaner and run it a couple of times, with restarts. There were still Photoshop 6 files sitting in the Utilities folder. I dragged these to trash manually. Photoshop 6 would not install, giving an error message about halfway through.  After nearly 2 hours of  tech chat and multiple interventions, the Mac was started in SAFE mode and permissions repaired, photoshop reinstalled from original CD, then upgraded.
Camera raw 7.2 was then installed successfully,  and now my Sony Rx100 ARW photo are brightly displayed in Bridge.
I hope this helps anyone else out there who experiences similar problems. Another  installation of camera raw 7.2 on different  mac (OS10.8.1) running Photoshop 6 was event-free.

  • Where is Content-Aware Age Tool in Photoshop CS6?

Was it suppose to be in the final release of Photoshop CS6?
If you go to this link http://www.practicalphotoshopmag.com/2012/04/01/photoshop-cs6-to-feature-content-aware-age -tool/
It states it was on beta version of Photoshop CS6 but no one have a video of it.  Or maybe it was for future release like CS6.1 or CS7.  I hope Adobe can add this useful feature on final version of CS6.

Yeah, and what about the "Clooning" and "Helen" tools mentioned in the same article?!?!?!
No "Clooning" and "Helen" tools, no upgrade for me matey!!!

  • I cannot download Photoshop CS6 from the cloud

I had a beta version of Photoshop CS6 on my Macbook (OS X 10.7.4) and forgot to uninstall it before downloading Photoshop CS6 through the Adobe Application Manager. When I tried to download Photoshop CS6 I received an error message in the Adobe Application Manager that read "A beta version of this product exists on the computer. Please quit and uninstall that version before continuing."
I clicked 'Cancel' then quit the Application manager and uninstalled the beta version that I had. I also used spotlight to find any other files that went with the beta verision I had and then trashed all of the files, emptied the trash and restarted my computer.
After doing all of that I've tried numerous times to download Photoshop CS6 but I keep getting the error message that I still have a beta version of Photoshop CS6 installed.
I've searched my computer and cannot find any files that pertain to that beta application.
I don't know what else to do and I REALLY need Photoshop CS6 asap.
I'm not having any issues downloading the other CS6 applications through the App Manager, only Photoshop, which is the most iportnat program I need.

    Nevermind!
I just found out about the 'Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool' and downloaded it and ran the tool. Thankfully it found a driver for Photoshop CS6 (beta) that was stilled installed on my computer. I was able to uninstall the driver and trash it. Right now Photoshop seems to be downloading successfully from the App manager. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't run into any other issues!
If anyone else is running into a similar issue that I was having download the 'Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool' and run it on your computer.

  • Photoshop CS6 Teacher Student Edition (Permanent License)

This might sound a bit silly question but I need to hear from you who knows better. Is Photoshop CS6 Teacher Student Edition (Permanent License) NOT the CC Edition is a CD-ROM. I mean a regular CD that contains the program and I can install it on my IMac?
    Thanks

Well, this is a nitpick, but a CD can only hold 600 MB. Photoshop is way larger than and is supplied on a DVD.
Just by looking on Amazon, you may get it as a boxed item (DVD) or as a download. Adobe offers it as a download.

More importantly register your software with Adobe. Your serial number will be stored under your account.  How many times have people come into this forum and started with, "I replaced my 5 year old rusty PC, and can't figure out what happened to my serial number...HELP!!"

  • Do Not install ATI catalyst 13.1 update

A recent update for Radeon HD 7800 (and possibly other models) caused almost all BLUE colors to display as BLACK on the screen in Photoshop CS6 (I'm running Win 7 64 and CS6 64) if your image is in an RGB Profile.
If you drag the image window around, the blue shows normally.  If you take an eyedrop sample of the color, it is actually blue... but it still looks black in the image window.  If you change the image profile to CMYK, the blue looks fine.  Change it back to RGB and it's black again.
Adobe support people on chat, with a shared screen, messed with my system and settings, uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted all of my preferences and profiles... basically goofed around for over 4 hours and couldn't figure out any solutions.
After I got them off my computer and spent almost two hours getting all of my settings and profile set back up, I did a trace for changes on my system.  I found that AMD/ATI had done an update, Catalyst 13.1, the day before, so I rolled back my video driver and... PRESTO.  Problem solved.

Thank you for your post.  ATI has known about this problem for quite a while, so they shouldn't have been goofing around.

Arch is a system designed for the more competent user, if you are going to constantly ask for help every step of the way you may need to rethink which operating system you may be using.

  • Photoshop CS6 didn't detect my VGA after installing Catalyst 13.6

I have a ATI Radeon HD 5670 (640 sp version). Yesterday I updated my VGA driver from Catalyst 13.4 to Catalyst 13.6 (driver code 13.101) and Photoshop CS6 stopped detecting my VGA.  Now I can't enable any GPU-related features to improve the performance anymore. When I tried running sniffer_gpu in cmd, it reported correctly but the "system info" tool in Photoshop still didn't recognize my VGA. I tried rolling back to the old driver and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop but the problem still persisted. Please help me
    My system:
    - Intel E2200
    - 2GB RAM
    - ATI Radeon HD 5670 640sp
    - Catalyst 13.6 (13.4)
    - Windows 7 pro 32 bit

Am I mistaken or does that screen shot say you are running an illegal, cracked version of Photoshop ("Portable") ?
Apologies in advance if I'm misreading the info.

  • ATI Catalyst 12.6 Released - Early Results

I have updated my Windows 7 x64 workstation, equipped with VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 5670, to use the new ATI Catalyst 12.6 release, just out.  I upgraded from their last stable release, 12.2.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
Early indications, with just a few hours testing, are that the GPU-enhanced features of Photoshop CS6 x64 appear to work OK with this ATI driver version:
I've been able to enable use of the Graphics Processor in Advanced mode, as with 12.2.
I've been able to enable OpenCL and it appears to stay enabled.
Liquify works well and it appears fast.
Oil Paint works well and fast, though there's a slight flicker when panning the image.
The new blurs (e.g., Iris Blur) work well and fast.
    Animated zooms are smooth.
Painting with various brushes, including bristle and mixer brushes, seems just about as quick as with earlier driver versions.
No change to the prior slow performance of the Smudge Tool with larger brushes. That may be a Photoshop issue.
Accelerated color-management (Normal and Advanced GPU modes) appears to work the same as before.  No change to the inaccuracy issue with documents in the ProPhoto RGB profile.
    New Problems Discovered
I now see a minor new transparency glitch, as reported by others in the thread below, where I did not see this problem with Catalyst 12.2:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/4530588#4530588
Questionable Things With Workarounds (Geek Stuff):
The driver insists on putting a couple of things in front of the system PATH on installation that are absolutely not needed, and worse, can cause problems on a development system (e.g., with Visual Studio).  These can be removed without downside I can see.
The installer sets a registry value that causes the recording of a whole bunch of extraneous events in the System Event Log.  This can be undone by setting this value:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Atierecord]
    "eRecordEnable"=dword:00000000
    Recommendations:
Keep in mind I only updated to this version of the driver earlier today, so I haven't got a lot of experience with it yet.  Early indications are that it's not bad, but if you're already on Catalyst 12.2 and you have a stable system, I see no reason to upgrade.
The new version does not appear to be faster, and there is the one new issue where there's a slight transparency glitch in 16 bits/channel documents showing on the screen after a canvas rotation.
I'll update this thread if I find more things to report.  Given the new transparency issue and the fact that I had no problems with 12.2, I'll probably test with 12.6 for a few days then drop back to 12.2.
    -Noel

You're very welcome, folks.  Thanks for taking the time to send your thoughts, and for your contributions here as well.
I've logged one full day of hard use including Photoshop and many other tasks, and I've seen zero glitches (outside the one I mentioned above, which is pretty minor) with the Catalyst 12.6 release.
