ATI HD 3870 & 10.6.2 Snow Leopard - no TV-out !!!

Ok,
Mac Pro 2.8ghz with 16gb RAM & HD 3870
Upgraded to Snow Leopard, no TV-out. Downgraded back to Leopard via Time Machine and TV-out is back. Someone else said they cleaned the contacts and it works ... doesn't make sense.
Anyone having problems with the HD 3870 and Snow Leopard?
Aaron

Bump,
Anybody. We use this for our live Video Announcements at our school and would love to benefit from Snow Leopard as BoinxTv is now optimized for it.
Please, anybody else using the TV-out on the HD 3870 under 10.6.2?

  • I have an older mac, i purchased Snow Leopard so that i could upgrade to Yosemite but now it says Snow Leopard is too out of date to update to Yosemite!

So i have an older Macbook that ran Leopard and i was told via Apple that in order to upgrade fully to Yosemite i would first have to purchase Snow Leopard, then i'd be able to update to Yosemite for free. I got the Snow Leopard disc (it was scratched which REALLY ****** me off, since i paid $20, but it seemed to work installing the new OS so whatever), and it's now at version 10.6.3 - i tried to run software updates and it says it's successful, but that i need to restart my computer. Every time i try, the screen just freezes with the desktop image and never restarts. And now i can't update to Yosemite because i need to have 10.6.8! I am very frustrated and not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help?

Don't panic. You can download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then you can access the App Store in order to download Yosemite.
Meanwhile you need to reinstall Snow Leopard properly:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).

  • Snow Leopard randomly logs out

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard the system logs me out and takes me to the Login Window repeatedly. There doesn't seem to be a trigger. It just happens. All applications are quit and I have to login again with my password. Super frustrating!
I have four accounts on my MacBook Pro: the main admin account, one with parental controls, one guest account and one other user.
Does anyone else have this experience?

Yep, add one more this morning. I was using PowerPoint 2004, which is pretty unstable at the best of times, but this is the first time it's caused everything to shut down and all users to be logged out. Not pressing any particular command-key sequence that I can remember.
From the diagnostic report it looks like a seg fault, maybe due to array bounds error?
EDIT: also, my machine is a Core 2 duo, so why does this program day it's spawning 6 threads? Do these represent OpenMP threads in the normal sense? If so, surely there's not enough separate CPUs to run them on!

  • Why does it take so long for snow leopard to ship out?

Are they low on stock? I ordered it back on Aug. 31st. I don't have my original discs and I needed a copy in order to reset iMac to factory settings.

Looking across a number of forums it would seem there's been a bit of a run on SL since Lion came out. Make of that what you will.
Amazon appear to have no stock, though a few Market Place dealers have, at inflated prices.
You'd be wise to get replacements for the original discs, too. The retail OS installer doesn't include the bundled software (primarily iLife) or Apple Hardware Test, which is tailored to the specific model.

  • Boot camp beta 1.2 to Snow Leopard

I've finally got around to updating Tiger to Snow Leopard (prep for Lion), which went fine, but I can't seem to update Boot Camp beta 1.2. When I try to run the boot camp assistant setup from the Snow Leopard disc in XP I get a prompt telling me errors were encountered, and that I need to try again later. XP is working ok with the old drivers. I know I could remove XP (SP2) 32 bit entirely and start over, but I'd rather not. Any ideas? Thanks.
Mac Pro 1,1 late 2006 with dual Xeons

In the same relative boat as you TNBriggs however I've a MacPro 1,1 2.66 with Snow Leopard OSX 10.68 with old Tiger-made Boot Camp Beta running Windows Vista Ultimate with about 160Gb partition (not big enough for me now) on an 1.5Tb triple partitioned drive. Also have upgraded original Radeon X1900 to a Radeon 3870 and that's where the probs started. Because I can't use any of the retail Boot Camps, I can't access graphics drivers for Windows Vista nor XP for the 3870 from AMD's site. They're all looking for newer Boot Camp resources to run all the graphic card parts of Apple's code. So snookered.
I also had XP 32-bit in another Tiger partition before that but since uninstalled as it would never take XP SP3. Only way I could ever get either Windows to work was to install drivers manually off original Tiger OSX retail DVD. I also have a Leopard OSX retail DVD but never tried its Boot Camp.
I also only want Windows on it for the rival R/C software - PHOENIX R/C 2.5 (now 3.0) and Microsoft FSX sim.
Was wanting to upgrade to the proper new Boot Camp drivers on SL OSX retail DVD but of course it didn't work.
    THE PLAN
As HD prices have sky-rocketed since the Thailand floods wiped out all the Hard Drive factories last year, drives are becoming scarer by the day, and it'll be at least a year before any of the factories are up and running again, so 2012 will be HD ****.
Am going to back-up my other two partitions on the Windows drive and then wipe the whole lot and start again (but with a bigger 2Tb HD). Will then let SL's Boot Camp Assistant do its thing and just buy a 32-Bit Vista Home Premium OEM disk this time second-hand. As far as I'm aware the SL drivers will then work when it comes the time to put in the disk once it's all in (cos SL's OEM disk doesn't allow you to put in one driver at a time like Tiger etc. OEM disk did).
There is a way to get Windows 7 32-bit on a MacPro 1.1 on other forums, but I think leaving it at Vista will be better than nothing as it all worked greated in Vista Ultimate 64-Bit before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and swopped out the Radeon card to the later Radeon 3870. Phoenix R/C and FSX both ran sweetly. But again, the underpinnings of the whole thing had Boot Camp Beta (from Tiger's days) running it all thus I couldn't access the later updates from Apple, thus the reason to have to go through all this nonsense again.

  • AS I  FOUND OUT LATE, LION DOES NOT SUPPORT ROSETTA, WHICH SUPPORTS QUICKEN AND CLASSIC AOL, AND MANY OTHER APPS. CAN I TAKE LION AWAY AND GO BACK TO SNOW LEOPARD?

I found out after the install of LION, that it does not support Rosetta, which runs Quicken and the classic AOL software and a myriad of other apps.
Can I go back to Snow Leopard? Is there a way to retrieve my thousands of saved E mails, which are saved on my Mac?
I still see the filing cabinet with my screen name but cannot get them to open.
Please help! Lion may roar, but the fact it does not support apps like quicken means it purrs.

I had the Apple store wiped out my hard drive and I restore my last hard drive downloard by first placing Snow leopard DVD in the DVD drive and holding "C" when turning on the machine then I follow the instructions. I am back on snow leopard and trying out two finance software to replace Quicken for mac 2007. I am trialing Quicken essentials and ibank. They are both compatable with LION. So when I am ready will download Lion again. Also, Micorsoft Office needs to be 2011 version for it to work on Lion

  • Cant boot from snow leopard dvd and install crashes computer

Folks, hi, newbie to this forum but at wits end.
I have a MacBook Pro 17inch mid 2010 model. I added the OMG disk doubler and ditched the internal dvd, so I now have 2 X 500GB hard drives, one of which has the OSX. This disk in trouble and Disk Utility says that it needs repairing, but i need to repair after booting from an different disk.
So, I added a usb dvd drive and put in snow leopard. It would not boot via holding down 'c' and the option key only saw the current drive. No problems I thought, I will install onto the second hard drive and boot from that. The process got a fair way though (20 mins) and the computer crashed. I checked that it is GUID, tried again, and ditto. So, I made a new partition that was nice and clean -- and ditto. Stuck about now, I tried to format a usb hard drive -- ditto. Hmm, didnt want to, but out came the second drive and in went the old dvd drive -- same issue -- could not boot using c button and the option key did not recognise the snow leopard install. Out came the drive and I went to the apple store -- they told me that the Snow Leopard I had brought was an upgrade and that I needed a Box Set. $169 later and - you guessed it -- the dvd is the same, no start on c, not recognised on option, and the computer crashes if I try and install to the second hard drive or an external drive.
    Help anyone??

when i go to system prefs- startup, the dvd does not show up in the list of startup drives. The apple salesman said that the OSX install disk I purchased was not a start up disk / full install but rather an upgrade only disk. That is why he said to use the box set as a 'full install' - but both appear to not start up or be able to do a clean install. I just end up with a set of files call Mac OSX install files.

  • Why might extracted Snow Leopard MacBookPro drive no longer boot under IMAC Lion?

I'm hoping someone can give a  likely explanation for the following sequence of events, and also recommend some next steps.  I've been backing up, using Time Machine on a partitioned drive, my 2008 IMAC with Lion and my 2008 MacBookPro with Snow Leopard.  Being out of town for the last 3 months, MBP backups were not possible and Murphy's law kicked in as the MBP refused to boot, no chime and black screen.  Tried all the discussion group suggestions and then returned home to visit the Apple store.
    1. Apple store said it was my logic board and repair would be $310, but if the hard drive was a problem Apple Repair would just swap it out.  Apple store would do backup of the drive before sending it for repair if I provided an empty drive.
    2.  As I didn't have a spare drive, I  purchased an OWC USB 3.0 enclosure kit  and inserted the drive from the MBP.
    3.  Plugging into the running IMAC, it came up and everything looked good.  TIme Machine recognize the new drive and included it in its list of devices to NOT backup.
    4.  I decided to see if I could boot the IMAC from this MBP drive by doing a restart with the option key held.  It gave me the choice and it worked.  Everything looked good and I was able to update my mail and to print.  I decided to have Time Machine do a backup and included the IMAC internal drive in the list of devices NOT to backup.  Time Machine warned that this MBP was a new computer and that i'd not be able to go back, which concerned me as the whole purpose is to be able to move to a new system if necessary.  I did a backup anyway and it copied about 25 GB of some 158 GB so it must have been an update.  Everything looked good.
    5.  I then did a restart and came up under Lion.  However the MBP drive was no longer visible on the desktop, but the system recognized that the OWC MBP drive was USB connected.  This was a concern.
    6.  I did a shut down of the IMAC and removed the MBP drive.  Rebooted IMAC and then inserted USB MBP drive.  It came up this time. Its contents looked good.
    7.  I then did a restart with the option key held.  It gave me the choice to boot from the MBP drive as before and I took it.  However it hung with a gray screen, circle with slash, and spinning wheel.  No activity from the MBP so I forced IMAC shutdown and removed the MBP drive.
    8.   Booted the IMAC, but can not get the MBP drive to appear on the desktop although it is recognized as a USB device.  No activity from the MBP drive as indicated by no flashing of its light.
I'm mystified as to what has happened.  Have I corrupted the MBP drive, or is it likely a hardware failure?  I'm thinking about a new computer, but was staying with Snow Leopard as it was only way to keep my scanner working.  It was momentarily convenient to be able to boot into Snow Leopard and to work as usual.  What can I do with my TIme Machine backup of the MBP if the MBP drive is corrupted?  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Pete, but it doesn't solve my problem.
Apple does something to the recovery partition to make it invisible. When I was trying to setup my 16GB USB stick drive as a "Recoverable Partition", since I don't have one on my main Lion drive, it made it invisible also. But during the process it failed to finish but has left my USB drive invisible under Lion and nothing that I've tried has been able to undue that. (See Above). What is it that I need to do to get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion. It is visible under Snow Leopard and it is visible under the lion install utitlties (I made a installer DVD from original internet downloaded Lion installer) but not under disk utilities on lion or the lion desktop! I've reformated under both the above(Snow Leopard & Installer utilities) were I had access to the USB Drive but that didn't undue whatever Apple does to make the recovery partition and my USB Drive invisible because once I boot back into Lion, it's still not there! So the $64,000 question is how do I get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion?
Hope this help you to understand my situration.

  • DVD Sharing issue between Leopard and Snow Leopard

Today started out pretty straight forward.. I was going to finally upgrade to Snow Leopard.  Turns out I have a bad optical drive (only reads CD's not DVD's). No problem... I will share the drive off my husbands laptop which is already running snow leopard.  Well 4 hours and a  whole lot of swearing later... it was still not working.  The drive would not mount under devices and it seemed no amount of coaxing would work.  I also was not getting the option of choosing a network after I rebooted with the option key (maybe that is MacBook Air only???) when I tried the remote install. I even went so far as to try to share the DVD drive of a windows vista system I have for work.
As a last ditch effort I threw the disk in an old PPC iMac also running 10.5.8 and Viola!!!!!! the disk appeared as it should and all seems to be well for an install. I post this for anyone else who finds themselves in this position... stop banging your head against a wall if the disk is not mounting with DVD/CD sharing. Try to find another leopard machine to use or use a different technique all together. (target disk mode, making an image on usb.. I've seen them, never tried them). Hopefully you won't lose hours tilting and windmills like I did.

    This solved my problem.
In Leopard in System Preferences I opened Security. In the Firewall tab I clicked on "Set access for specific services and applications"
Once I had File Sharing (AFP, SMB) added I was able to access my Macpro on my PowerBook G4.

  • Tips and help with re-installing Lion over Snow Leopard

I had MAJOR issues with my initial Lion install on my Mid-2009 MBP- so much so, that I had to wipe my hard drive and re-install Snow Leopard and all my applications. My major issues were as follows:
    1. All my files were locked out- I could open them in most cases, but I couldn't overwrite them- Lion had aded some funky permissions scheme that I didn't recognize, and my user name wasn't present on any of them. In some cases, I couldn't even open files, even though they were resident on my hard drive (and in my own user folder) before the upgrade to Lion.
    2. Apple's own Universal Binary apps wouldn't work after the upgrade. Final Cut Pro 6, in particular, came up with a message that it was a "PowerPC" app and wouldn't run- yet Shake 4.1 would run just fine!
    3. Adobe Creative Suite 3- after the upgrade, my Abode Ceative Suite 3 apps worked just fine, for about a day- that is, until I tried to correct the file permissions issue by changing permission on a few of my folders in my User folder (and electing to change permissions in the files contained therein)- at which point my Adobe apps told me that they were damaged and needed to be reinstalled. Yet after uninstaling and reinstalling the entire Creative Suite 3 times, I still would get the same message.
My entire workflow is Adobe CS and FCS2- why chould I have to pay the upgrade costs just to use Lion? FCPX is completely brkoen for my workflow and eqipment, and Adobe can't even guarantee that CS5 works with Lion- so why does Apple insist on Lion when it's hardly even compatible with its own products?
I really want to use Lion, but I am looking for some tips on instalation to kep these problems from happening again. I didn' have ANY of these problems with upgrading OS 10.2 through 10.6. Any help with prepping my system/files for upgrading would be helpful. Thanks!

Me, I think clone backups are more useful, and only use T.M. as secondary.
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
I'd assume that professional apps may need to be tested still; and of course check to see what you have that depends on PowerPC code and Rosetta first. That has some in a tither.
A clone lets you still be able to boot Snow Leopard. Check out Carbon Copy, SuperDuper.

  • Print Booklet to PDF in Indesign CS5 on Snow Leopard?

Moving our 200 clients over to CS5 and Snow Leopard and finding out that our one coarse creates booklets and during testing it was noticed that you can't create a pdf from a booklet.
How does one do this under Snow Leopard now??
    Thanks,
    Dan

Yea but look right below your circle.  Everything has a white background and looks like it was just thrown there.  Its a wonder they didn't make the "User Accounts and Family Safety" text the same blue color as the other stuff.  Luckily the icon is there to help but its hard on the eyes in my opinion.
In OS X System Preferences aka Control Panel its far easier to get around in.  If it was Windows 7 it would all be a solid color....see how Personal section is lighter than the Hardware section and it then flip flops as it goes.   Looking at the Windows 7 Control Panel and other things its just a bad visual design.
But this isn't the place to be talking about this so this will be my last post unless its about PDF printing and Snow Leopard.  Thanks.....

  • Silverfast AI Studio crashing PSCS3 in Snow Leopard

Photoshop CS3 has been working just fine in Snow Leopard, but I wondered what would happen when I fired up my scanner.  Finally tried it today.  I have used LaserSoft Silverfast, a pretty nice scanner driver, for years.  Silverfast attempts to load, fails, and the system pops up a dialog box saying that Silverfast Universal, a component of the scan driver, requires Rosetta to launch, and do I want to install it?  No, I don't, thank you.  Ok, so I'll use Image Capture for a while until LaserSoft get their act together.  End of story, right?
Nope.  The failed launch of Silverfast Universal has rendered Photoshop unresponsive, dead in the water, requiring a Force Quit.  So if you scan with Silverfast, and didn't install Rosetta with Snow Leopard, you are out of luck until Silverfast is updated.  The good news is, Image Capture found my scanner & operated it just fine, albeit without all the options in Silverfast.

    Steve,
Yes, many people in this forum have pointed out that if you scan with the standalone, you can keep on working in Photoshop. I don't know why I scan from within Photoshop.  Just an old habit, I guess.  Apparently version 6.6.1r2: (2009-09-01) is not out for my scanner yet, as I was just on the site today, and it is not available.  I have an Epson Expression 1640XL that has seen better days.  I imagine LaserSoft will get around to updating my plugin pretty soon.  I found it interesting that the plugin's failed launch would take down Photoshop instead of simply failing.
