ATI Radeon 2600 graphics artifacts

I have a new MacPro with the ATI Radeon 2600 in it. Occasionally, (perhaps 3 times in 5 months)the screen will go completely wacky, with the whole screen turning like a tie die, except not as cool. A restart seems to fix the problem. Right now I am running EFI firmware version 01.00.236. There is an update (to .252) that I have been avoiding because of the increased fan noise and other complaints I have read about, I was hoping for a newer firmware to be released.
Are there MacPro users who have had the card issue, and had it fixed by the new firmware, and is there issues with the .252 firmware that make it worth avoiding?

I'm experiencing issues with my new Mac Pro as well, bought it this month. It has the default everything except I've added 8GB OWC ram. Everything passes apple hardware test, multiple times, but a few times now my open windows (all applications) have become "messed up". For example, this is Safari:

Is this similar to what everyone is seeing?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Photoshop CS3 and ATI Radeon 2600XT  Graphics ERRORS

I am Running photoshop CS3 on a mac pro 2.8GHz 8-core with and ATI Radeon 2600XT graphics card. On any size file, from a small jpeg to an enormous tif, any time I pan around the image, the monitor will repeat a section of the image over and over to fill the screen. That is to say, panning vertically will fill the screen with copies of a random horizontal section of the image (20pixels wide or so). The effect goes away as soon as I perform another action that affects the entire image (zoom, action undo, create new layer, etc.). I have updated photoshop and osx with all available software and firmware updates.
An example of what this looks like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26107441@N02/2450960322/

I am running the same Mac hardware with a Mitsubishi 2060u, 1600x1200, 85Hz (CRT). I am having no such issues with PS CS3. I tried the monitor at 60Hz as well which also worked fine.
Do you have all the latest updates installed including the 2600 firmware update?

  • ATI Radeon 2600 XT Fan Noise

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:
    Mac OS X Update 10.5.5
    Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
    iTunes 8.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2
    QuickTime 7.5.5
    Remote Desktop Client Update 3.2.2
    Front Row Update
All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until this morning. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A soft reset of the SMC has also been done - no change. Is this a known issue? Is anybody else experiencing this? I've also posted my temps below:

I don't know what is happening with ATI, at first I thought it was the consolidation and merger that affects products and Q&A, but the X1900, then the 2600XT, and even the 3870's fans and noise (which after 3 months seems to be better now on the 3870 with the latest models rolling out).
Normally I would expect a new or even ref'd unit would have the latest fixes and if there still are problems... then there aren't any solutions? One person dropped into Vista and reduced fans to 20% setting and it works even under heavy loads w/o getting above 80C.
Seems like the Nvidia 8800GT costs more, doesn't have the drivers optimized for OpenGL just yet, but runs quieter.
One person complained theirs would making an annoying "up-down-up" fan revving constantly.
A copper cooling kit isn't a option user should have to invest in. Not sure it works with 2600 -
"The Accelero S1 Rev. 2 dramatically extends the compatibility to many of the latest graphic cards. It supports high-end to main stream graphic cards including the latest hot selling Radeon HD 3870, 3850 , GeForce 8800GTS (G92) and 8800GT. http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147

  • ATI Radeon 2600 XT on Mac Pro 2008 has died

    Hi All,
I have recently been having issues with one of my ATI Radeon 2600 XT Graphics cards - choppy graphics, artefacts appearing on the display and endless crashes of the OS.
I have read online about a recall program Apple did run which recalled these exact graphics cards, and after checking the serial number of the card in question, it does indeed match one of the 'bad' batch.
The only problem is - the program ended in July 2011
What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
    Thanks
    Mac Pro (early 2008)
    6GB Memory
    2 x ATI Radeon 2600XT
    2 x 23" Cinema HD Monitors

What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
I'm in the same boat.  :\  Mine just died too, would I need to take my tower to an Apple Store?  Or how would I go about asking Apple to replace my graphics card?
Also, if I were to put in a different graphics card (say the ATI Radeon HD 5770), how difficult is it to replace?  Would my Mac Pro (Early 2008) be able to handle it?  I have 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processor, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 says it requires Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with PCI Express 2.0 slot and OS X 10.6.4, whereas I'm still on just 10.5 Leopard and have an Early 2008 model...
On another thread, here, The Hatter, said something about baking the card in the oven?  Would that work if Apple won't replace it for free?
I have never opened up my tower before (I don't know how!) and I have been wanting to upgrade my RAM as well.  I have 4x1GB cards and I wanted to move up to like 8 or 16GB.  I was thinking about buying RAM from NewEgg or Amazon, whichever is cheaper, any suggestions?
Thank you for any help and sorry about hijacking the thread!   >~<  Should I make my own thread or continue in this one?  I'm sorry, I just don't want to cause any problems...I will make a new one if need be.

  • Cant use ati radeon 2600

I have a first edition mac pro, I was told that the ati radeon 2600 would work in it but I can't get it to work. The screen is fuzzy and none of my games will detect it. Do I need to upgrade to leopard to use it.

If you can find someone with Leopard and copy the Radeon 2xxx drivers from the Extensions folder, it might work okay under Tiger. But the card (and drivers) was designed to work under Leopard.

  • 10.5.5 + PowerMac G5 w/ ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) Bad combo.

10.5.5 is not displaying video properly. Elgato seemed to have narrowed it down to a specific computer setup with an OpenGL change from the 10.5.5 update.
    http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
My screen shot is the one used in the knowledgebase document. I now see that Apple DVD Player and flip4mac in quicktime have the same look. The audio is fine. VLC can play all of the files with no problem.
If you have the same setup:
PowerMac G5 tower (single or multiple processor), with a ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) please post if you are having this problem or not.

The fastest way (which will take a while) is to:
    1) Make sure you have an up to date backup with time machine.
    2) Boot from your Leopard install disc or disc that came with your computer.
    3) When choosing an install method you can choose an archive and install or erase and install.
    4) After the OS is installed it will ask you if you want to restore files from another drive, partition, mac or time machine.
    5) Choose time machine and get your files restored.
    6) Once the mac is started up.
    7) Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html and download the 10.5.4 combo update.
8)You then need to use software update to install all of the updates that came after 10.5. UNCHECK the 10.5.5 Combo Update. You can even select to ignore that update by checking the box next to so that it is selected and then selecting ignore update from the update menu in the menu bar.
I have not tried using Time Machine to go back an OS version. I will experiment with that.
I can also tell you how to clone your drive to another drive using the same DVD as above and two hard drives.
    I hope this helps.

  • Is my ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics card wielded to the MotherBoard?...

Hello guys, I was just needing to know if my ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics card wielded to the MotherBoard, the reason I'm asking is BC I'm needing to upgrade my Video Card to NVidia so that I can get 60 FPS in my Games, right now I'm getting half that which is 30 FPS and sometimes it drops to 4 FPS. LOL can you believe that?, 4 FPS LMAO come on man, somethings gotta be better than ATI Radeon 3100....Hope to hear from you...

I'm just not sure what is going on - that error is what Mac Mini's and others with onboard video have when they try to run FCE/FCP, and there is a workaround mentioned here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1609878
Of course, your MBP has the ATI card, not onboard video.
I did a clean install of FCE 3 HD ( PPC ) and then upgraded immediately to FCE 3.5 HD ( Universal ) and have experienced no problems with it.

  • ATI Radeon 2600 screen/graphics artifacts - anybody else seeing this?

I got a new Mac Pro (2 X 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon) direct from the Apple on-line store about 3 weeks ago and have been *incredibly impressed* with it.
However, each time I use the machine for an hour or so for anything graphics intensive (e.g. playing a QT movie) I start to get huge polygon "artifacts" on the display:
    http://gallery.mac.com/russell.archer#100018/IMG_0030&bgcolor=black
The machine continues to behave solidly in all other respects while the artifacts are displayed (and they shift and change, sometimes disappearing for a second or two). Once the the artifacts have appeared the only way to get rid of them is to reboot, then all is back to normal. If I stick to non-graphic intensive work like using Xcode, VMWare, etc. then I don't have any problems - it seems to be a direct of result of using either QuickTime or other movie-related stuff.
The Mac Pro has never crashed or locked up, even when the screen artifacts are displayed.
I have Leopard 10.5.2 with all the latest updates, including the latest firmware updates.
When the artifacts first appear, there's no noticeable difference in the speed of the fans and looking at all the temperature readings (with Hardware Monitor) everything seems cool.
I've done all the usual stuff like a fresh install, zapping the PRAM, etc.
Looks to me like there's either a problem with the ATI 2600 graphics card drivers or perhaps a temperature-sensitive issue in the actual card hardware (I haven't yet tried speeding up the GPU fan to see if this helps).
So, before I ring Apple support, has anybody been seeing this sort of thing?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, I faced this terrible problem too. And I just learnt that it is a bug in the Apple's Open GL drivers. It has to do with Leopard, ATI and Nvidia cards. And I don't know how to solve it! I read on some other forums that it is a problem that ATI acknowledge and there is no solution to it as yet. Mine is worst, lots of distortion, artifacts, coloured triangles, coloured lines, everything that is so nightmarish that affects my work (I need to work on images on photoshop, long hours on the computer). I really need some kind advice from someone. Really very depressed and upset over this Mac Pro that I bought in barely a year.

  • GPU improvement on ATI Radeon 2600 PRO versus Win7

I might return to Windows (7) after I tried having an OS running using the GPU. Great.

  • Does anyone know a workaround? ATI Radeon 4500 graphics card not recognised with Photoshop CC

    Hi Guys,
I recently upgraded a few bits to my Dell studio 5 which is somewhat of it's age now. I put a solid state in, upped the RAM and also installed windows 8.1.
The machine has been running a treat, almost as though it was a new beast, however this has been at a price. Elements within Photoshop now do not work such as the 3D elements and paint brush tip preview amongst a few other things, however the 3D elements not working is a problem. As a designer, its quite important I have these features working, but since my upgrades and enhancements its cost me. I have been on the ATI website (Now AMD) and downloaded a fair few versions of the drivers for my ATI Radeon 4500. I even installed the new patch for windows 8 but to no avail.
I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and got around it. I have read loads of different forums and tried all sorts of installs but its still not working.
Give me a shout if you have beat this annoying issue
    Cheers

  • How to tell if an ATI Radeon Pro Graphics card needs any updates?

I have upgraded the firmware on my G4 Gigabit and re-installed the combo update for OS 10.4.11, and am on an update rampage. I am wondering if I need to update driver/firmware for the video card in this computer. It is a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. System Profiler lists its ROM Revision as 113-99703-127.
How to tell if this needs an updated driver? Also, the ATI site lists both a download for ATI Displays Panel, and Retail Update. If I need to update, which is it, or both?
I know nothing about graphics cards.
    Thanks!
    BC

    Hi-
The ATI Displays panel is a handy tool. Install if you like, with no worry as to adverse effects.
Other than that, Tiger has all the drivers that you need. No firmware update is needed, either.
Should be no need for outside updates for the 9000.

  • Will my ATI Radeon x1600 graphics card support Final Cut Express?

In the fall I plan to attend Cincinnati State, and major in AVP (Audio Video Production), and I wanted to get a head start by purchasing the program Final Cut Express. • 975X PE + ATI HD2400/2600 Graphic card

I am wondering if the new ATI Radeon HD 2400 (or HD2600) graphic card with integrated audio decoder it will work on 975X PE mobo? I mean, if the sound will work... ATI responed ro my question that , Yes, the sound should work. But it is strange for me, from where the graphic card will take the audio input? There is no need of any additional SPDIF cables/ inputs from the mobo... Maybe the Windows will detect the graphioc card as a separate audio devices? In this case, I should chose between mobo audio and graphic audio..

If the graphics card supports the function, then the ATI drivers should have the capability to support those functions as well. The mainboard will support the graphics card, just the matter of drivers only.
