ATI Radeon 4770 Fan Noise - Any bright ideas?

Hi,
I've an ATI Radeon 4770 graphics board installed on my Mac Pro (Early 2009, 16 gigs of RAM, OS 10.6.8). The board works fine but the fan is noisy and goes on full tilt from a cold boot. If I restart the Mac Pro then the fan will slow down and stop. This is my current workaround. Other than fan noise problem, everything else is working.
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot so far: Reset the SMC, zapped PRAM several times. Updated OS to 10.6.8 from 10.6.7. Verified HD and disk permissions. Extended Hardware Test has been passed.
Anyone any other bright ideas?

Then you should be talking to the Vendor about why the card they sold you does not work correctly.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can't find the express to set it up.. or you can't find the network created by the express?

ATI Radeon X1900 XT Noise levels

I'm considering a Mac Pro + 4GB RAM + ATI X1900 XT to run Apeture, based on the experiences & recommendations in this forum.
Can anyone comment on the noise level of the ATI X1900 XT compared with, say, the standard GeForce 7300 GT? I use my current Mac to run iTunes, as well as some other sound based apps that would suffer if the graphics card noise level was like a jumbo jet on final approach.
Does anyone have experiences here they can share?
I read in the forum that there is a possibility of a ATI Radeon X1950 XTX for Mac Pro that is quieter ... any truth in that?

I have a MacPro 2.66 with the X1900 which was preinstalled in the system. The card is quite noisy but it is at an acceptable level. The reason you hear it is that the MacPro itself is very silent. Two components are competing which can make more noise: the harddisk (standard model with 250 GB) and the X1900. :-))
The sound from the X1900 is a constant fan noise which you are able to ignore while you work with this awesome machine. The performance of Aperture is simply great with this card even if I just installed 1GB of RAM!
Let me say it this way: If you want great performance for Aperture you should arrange with the fan noise of the X1900. Im convinced that we will see much more silent cards in the future which will give us the same performance. Then the time for a nice christmas present will have come! :-))

Radeon 2600 Fan Noise

I had an issue with my new Mac Pro, where the Radeon 2600 Fan was running eratically, even without any load on the card. It sounded like an engine reving up. It then settled running at max speed, which was very noisy.
With the help of Tech Support the problem was resolved, however the fan is still too noisy for my liking, and I was thinking of using a passive cooling solution.
Has anyone done this, and what passive unit will do the job.

Get the card replaced would be first thing to look into. There were problems with the firmware update process; and problems with many of the retail 3870's which seem to be okay now. Manufacturing problem.
There are some kits but you should not need one on a 2600.

I have the ipad 3, and just last night had to reboot and do the upgrade, now my texting and facetime on it is not working...it states that when I click to activate it, and put in my user id(email) and passcode....that" could not sign in...please chekc network connection and try again".....well my Wifi connection is fine, and i can text and facetime fine from my iphone..just not the ipad now.....any ideas why it will not take my user id and passcode?...the passcode works fine on my iphone.

I'd use Locale for currencies.
This is a case where stuff that's already available to you should be preferred. Why write your own when someone else has already done it better? You don't have to maintain it, either. JMO, of course.

I cannot sign in to FaceTime and because it was installed as part of mountain lion it can't be deleted and a a new one installed everything else works with my apple id i am using a mac book pro any bright ideas

Quit FaceTime:
With the Finder active, hold the Option key down and click on the Go menu. Select Library. In that folder select the Preferences folder. In there look for these two files and trash them:
com.apple.facetime.bag.plist
com.apple.FaceTime.plist
Now try FaceTime.

Ati radeon pro hd 3870 any experience to report?

is anybody using this card? impressions? problems?
i have an X1900 and i am getting little stutters in video capture and playback (the movies render ok) and i wonder if the 3870 would help.

I just wanted to do a quick update. I tried completely uninstalling the drivers (including running driver sweeper) and reinstalling the drivers. That made no difference.
However, because I've seen quite a few reports of this card working for other people, I decided to exchange it for another 3870 in hopes that maybe I got a bum card. Well I did the exchange yesterday, and I have been in Bootcamp-gaming-bliss ever since!
So I guess my 2 cents is try the complete uninstall/reinstall of drivers (thanks hatter for the recommendation on that) and if it still doesn't work, maybe you got a bad card like I did.
I just wanted to toss out some hope for others having the same problem.

ATI Radeon 2600 XT Fan Noise

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:

All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until this morning. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A soft reset of the SMC has also been done - no change. Is this a known issue? Is anybody else experiencing this? I've also posted my temps below:

I don't know what is happening with ATI, at first I thought it was the consolidation and merger that affects products and Q&A, but the X1900, then the 2600XT, and even the 3870's fans and noise (which after 3 months seems to be better now on the 3870 with the latest models rolling out).
Normally I would expect a new or even ref'd unit would have the latest fixes and if there still are problems... then there aren't any solutions? One person dropped into Vista and reduced fans to 20% setting and it works even under heavy loads w/o getting above 80C.
Seems like the Nvidia 8800GT costs more, doesn't have the drivers optimized for OpenGL just yet, but runs quieter.
One person complained theirs would making an annoying "up-down-up" fan revving constantly.
A copper cooling kit isn't a option user should have to invest in. Not sure it works with 2600 -

ahhhh more fun, 3 windows updates are now causing a no boot, Black screen. Everytime i must do a system restore and i see the logs of the updates, anyone know what the cause of this problem is?

ATI fan noise

Hi everyone,
I've just bought I ATI 9800 Pro 256MB Mac Special Edition, and the fan noise is extremely irritating.
I've been to xlr8yourmac.com and have seen a couple articles on replacing the fan with an Arctic Cooling VGA silencer and the Verax G03. Both operations seem a little hairy to me. A visit to the Arctic Cooling web site reveals newer products such as the ATI silencer 1 and 2.
Has anyone had any luck installing these types of products onto an ATI card and what was the result? Also, how difficult was the operation?

Hmm - it's all coming back now.
Verax instructions were not good - but xlr8 covers it pretty well.
Verax recommend using the power available at the optical drive, rather than connecting direct to the socket on the card, like the ATI fan.
Verax, unfortunately, supplied a single, direct Molex-type power connector with the G03, but their excellent support quickly sent the correct Y-connector, as shown on xlr8.
Twisting the ATI fan off the GPU takes guts - but may be made easier by warming the area to soften the thermal paste.
I don't know whether cleaning the old paste off to a mirror-finish is vital, but with nail-varnish remover(all I could find...) and cotton buds it takes a while and needs care to keep it off the surrounding PCB. Final clean with methylated spirits(denatured alcohol) as there are other ingredients in nail-varnish remover.
I used the thermal paste supplied by Verax - but used more than xlr8 suggest, as the GPU heat-sink was lower compared to the surrounding bits than in their photos, and it was the only way to get a good even contact.
Made sure I was grounded/earthed throughout - just in case.
Time taken...? Depends how thorough the cleaning, I suppose.
Not much more than an hour as I recall. Maybe two hours. More time spent reading and re-reading the instructions than actually doing the job!

Aloha, I've searched & searched so I'm hoping someone here might have an idea where to get an ATI X800 XT card for my G5. I have heard rumors that they have started making/shipping them again. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo in advance for any tips. JB

OK, so getting an ATI X800 card looks impossible right now, so can anyone point me towards a different card that would make working with Aperture on my G5 a bit quicker/smoother?
G5 Dual 2.3 GHz PPC with 4GB ram and a (AGP) ATI Radeon 9650 video card.

2010 Mac Pro for video work: ATI 5770 or 5870? performance vs. fan noise

I'm planning to swap my old Mac Pro (2006 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT) for a 2010 Mac Pro model, because I need more speed for video (FCP 7, Color, Magic Bullet Looks) and photo (Lightroom 3, Photo Shop CS5) work. I'm thinking of the 6-Core (3.33 GHz) Mac Pro with 24 GB RAM and ATI Radeon 5870. I read a first review which said, that the 5870 is VERY noisy (fans), and now I'm little afraid. Is the 5870 really that loud, and will it bring clear advantages over the ATI 5770 (I dont't do 3D work yet)? I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

I've got the 6-core w/5870 on order, so don't yet have it myself. I've been looking into this issue also, as noise is a concern.
This (http://techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/RadeonHD5870/29.html) test showed me that the card is pretty typical at idle, but fairly loud when loaded.
I don't expect I'll be loading my video card much with the work that I do right now, so wasn't as concerned. In the end, I guess I'll find out when my new machine arrives.
