  • Monitor goes dark on 2008 Mac Pro Tower with ATI Radeon 5870 Card

I have a 2008 Quad Core Intel Mac Pro Tower running 10.6.8.
The original graphics card had trouble with HD movies of any kind and eventually my screen would sometimes not turn on (stayed black) when the computer was turned on.
So I replaced the graphics card for both reasons to a ATI Radeon 5870 PCIe with a GB rather than the 256 that came with the machine.
The problem was solved. I got a new monitor, one that is like the latest ones and all has been working great for a few years.
Then recently the monitor started going dark while the computer was on. (no screen saver or anything like that, I can be in the middle of work on a photo or video).
    Trouble shooting I have tried.
A forum said drag the mouse to the hot corner for a while and then back. Well, I tried, assuming I was dragging the mouse to the corner. Didn't work.
I tried using the keyboard commands to shut down the computer. It didn't work.
I tried plugging the keyboard into other USB ports and tried to shut down the computer. No luck.
The only thing that works is shutting down the computer with the power button.
on start up the monitor is back on.
Sometimes it works for days like this, other times the monitor stays on only minutes.
The monitor is fine. Tested my old monitor on the computer to make sure it wasn't my new monitor.
    So the questions are:
    Can it be over heating?
is it worn out, toast, done and or dead and dieing?
Should I buy a replacement graphics card VS finally upgrading and getting a new computer (lots of $$$$ but then I do work in HD Video so....)
    any help is appreciated
    thanks

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

Even if they make it available, does this change mean other Radeon 5870 based cards will work in the system? If so, does this mean Radeon 5870 based eyefinity 6 cards will work with the new mac pros, and hopefully the old ones with a driver/software update? That would make it an even more significant refresh from a graphics point of view...
In any case, if other 5870 based cards would work, that would be the easiest solution for getting hold of the required card as there are loads of cards already available for purchase based on the 5870 GPU...

  • Should I purchase ATI Radeon 5770 vs. ATI Radeon 5870?

I'm using CS5 to do focus stacking (2-3GB files) doing a lot of free transform/opacity changing to match layers underneath and also moderate video editing in Final Cut.
I want to upgrade my graphics card (currently have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120) and was wanting some input as to the ATI Radeon 5770 or the ATI Radeon 5870? Is the 5870 overkill for these applications? Will I see much improvement in smooth anchor point movement? Running dual monitors out of the DVI and mini display port (s).
    Thanks

Outside your budget? Quadro 4000 could potentially do more if CS5 Mercury Engine plug-in is being used or off load and use CUDA.
Trouble is you can't (easily) have 5870 and Quadro 4000.
$449 seems an awful lot for 5870 today, (PC 5870s are now less than Apple 5770). PC Quadro 4000 go for $750 instead of $1195.
One reason why - (there are threads here, too)

  • Where can I buy a new ATI Radeon 5870 1 gb graphics card?

I've had my Mac pro since 24/08/12. Recently the my machine has been making horrible screeching noises whenever I use graphic intensive applications like 3d design. I believe the noise is coming from the ATI Radeon 5870 and would like to replace it or have one on standby if my current one dies.
I'm having difficulty finding a compatible replacement card, can anyone guide me in the right direction?

  • ATI Radeon 5870 Upgrade a BIG Disappointment

Well, here I am, at 3:20 in the morning, having copied 43GB of video onto a Firewire 800 drive to sneaker net it to my colleagues 12 core Mac for rendering in the other office. This, after 10 hours of trying to make peace with the ATI Radeon HD 5870 which I just installed along with a 9TB RAID into my otherwise and formerly trustworthy 8 core Mac Pro.
    The issues, in Final Cut:
1.) ALWAYS "Out of Memory" for the first time in history. Apparently the Radeon plus a Black Magic Intensity Pro Plus certain Plugins in FCP create instability. So, I turned off the Intensity. Still, no go. Cannot render a thing.
2.) New crashes. This machine is on 24/7, and has never crashed until this "upgrade."
3.) Weird workarounds: if a render died, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to attempt the same render under the same codec. By changing codecs, Pro Res HQ to Pro Res 4444 in this case, the render (in total) can be tried again. When that fails, it's back to Pro Res HQ.
    4. Then, I cut the timeline into little chunks. Based on the render time, the 5870 is NOT being used at all. It is all CPU, no GPU in the latest Final Cut Studio. The 12 core is commensurately faster, based on its faster motherboard and faster, 12 cores. There is no evidence the power of the graphics cards (a 5770 on the 12 core) are used in the least. Having an NAB deadline in the morning will keep me up all night for the first time in years.
Perhaps the foretold new version of Final Cut will appear at NAB at the FCP supermeet. Maybe it will address the issues. For now, I can cut, but NOT render on my main edit machine. Time to put the cheapy graphics card back in. I'd like to render, and with the prior no improvement evidence, I seem to have wasted a bunch of money.
At least the new 9TB internal RAID is screaming fast.
    Richard Brown

It is obvious you blame the new card for everything. While it may seem obvious to you, it is far from that for those of use on the other side of the internet cloud. That ATI card resides in lots of MacPros and is an OEM selection from the Apple store. Your problems are not usual.
Without any other information: sequence settings, video material source and codec, output, OSX version FCP version, QT version, ect, it is impossible to help you. What exactly are the "certain Plugins"?
As David already notes, FCP doesn't make much use of the video card GPU. Certain filters do use it, but we have no way of knowing what you are doing. We also have no idea of this "blazing fast raid" and how it is set up.
Offer up some useful information about the project and your setup, and we will do what we can.

  • ATI Radeon 5870 vs 5770 in FCP X: Big difference?

As with many others I'm on the fence about FCP X. FCS is currently serving my needs, but I'd like to see FCP X for myself.
My Mac Pro is an early 2008 (MacPro3,1. 2.8GHz) with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 with which it came.
Apparently I need to upgrade that card, but I'm looking at the least expensive option, mainly because I don't want to put a lot of money into a relatively old MP, especially with rumors of a new model out this year.
So, I'm thinking about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and the 5870, even though Apple says that they are not officially supported for the early 2008 Mac Pro.
Question to those with experience with these cards and FCP X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4: Will the 5870 exhibit a big (any?) performance boost over the 5770?
    Thank you.

    So I've just upgraded my 8-core Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) from the Nvidia 8800 to the ATI 5770 to the 5870 in the hope of speeding up my FCPX import/transcode/render/export workflow and can confirm that;
1). the 5770 and 5870 all love the 3,1 platform
2). you can run the 5770 and 8800 side-by-side (great for BOINC where I had the 8800 GPU earning credits while the 5770 drove my screens)
3). there is no measurable difference in the performance of the 8800, 5770 or 5870 on import and transcode
4). there is a 20% performance improvement using the 5870 vs 5770 in Motion type configurations (in this case sclaing a video stream 70% and warping the top and bottom left +/-100) - I did not have time to confirm the result for the 8800
5). I could find NO discernable difference in export speed between Nvdia's 8800, the ATI 5770 or 5870 cards despite Compressor in theory being OpenCL/GPU accelerated
    There are two wrinkles that may have affected the above result;
a). I have installed the CUDA drivers from Nvidia
b). I was "forced" to install Quicktime 7 by another app and I am not sure if this impacted the use of teh GPU on export
All of the above tests were run on an 8-core early 2008 (3,1) Mac Pro with 32GB RAM, SSD boot drive, 7200RPM 3Gbps Seagate media drive running Lion 10.7.3, FCPX 10.0.4
I hope that helps - I'll write up the details and post to my blog when I get the time...

  • HT4279 ATI Radeon HD 5870 screen resets size after after sleeping. Why?

Purchased an ATI Radeon HD 5870. When connected to 1920x1080 it leaves a third of the screen out. However after starting up it fits the screen. Only after sleeping does it reset to this faulty screen size. I have attempted every Mini dv adapter vga,dvi and hdmi. All lead to the same issue or another.
Is this card defective? Is this an issue with the Lion OS?

Ok let me go into more detail for you.
Macpro had 2 Geforce gt 120 video cards. I recently had some blocking issues ( where the screen just over lays a bounch of boxes with random parts of the background and or aps running). Decided to upgrade to the Radeon 5870. Before the upgrade i have been using a Samsung LCD tv and and old Dell monitor. Worked great. Tv res was set to 1920x1080. Instailed the new card. Hooked up the Dell to the DVI output and Tv to a Mini DV at first using the Mini DV to DVI. Ended up with the half the screen issue. Took the back and got the Mini DV to HDMI. I didnt have the size issue but when set to 1080 it was not hidef. Took that back and got the Mini DV to VGA. Now here is where I currently am stuck. When both the TV (Mini to VGA) and the Dell (VGA to DVI) are connected to the 5870 and the harddrive and monitors go to sleep it resets and i lose an 8th of the screen. I currently am just using the TV and everything seems to be fine. Also on the amount i lose there is a dotted line that some times flickers. Not sure if that means anything.

  • Any updates on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 upgrade kit for Mac Pro 2009/2010?

    So,
while the card is shipping without delay in new BTO Mac Pro units, there still is no sign of the kit posted on on the online store months ago (day/date with current Mac Pro release). To date, the card hasn't shipped (to anyone - no 3rd party store has received it), Apple still shows 'currently unavailable' - without even an 'add to cart' button (like the Quadro 4000); and even AppleCare is in the dark (you'd assume they can send units for replacement. Yet, while they can be setup in the GSX system, there is apparently no 'cost' shipments available even from support).
I suppose not - but does anyone have any more insight into what's going on here? This looks suspiciously like this card is not going to see the light of day as an upgrade kit; for either 2010 or 2009 Mac Pro.....
    Cheers,
    Dan

    Ugh.
That rhymes with what we are seeing.
After about a week of there being an 'order' button for the 5870 (it remained 'currently unavailable' though), the 'add to cart' option has, today, disappeared again. I assume anyone who ordered the card during the window will not see the card, and there seem to have been no purchase confirmations (usually sent within 15 minutes of processing) sent to anyone who ordered.
All this, as well as you report, points to the 5870 being EOL; apparently only a contingent was made for the Mac Pro, and now even AppleCare is running down on inventory for replacements.
That begs the question; once inventory runs out - assuming it does - to even supply the Mac Pro BTO, there has to be some replacement ready; assumingly something with better yield.
BTW - the 5870 cards for the Mac Pro are made by AMD (they are identical to the reference boards), and are stamped as such in Mac Pros. Whatever Apple does with them, they still get them from AMD, not a third party....
And, the Quadro 4000 isn't a good replacement - apart from the cost (which is reasonable for a productivity card) as for non-optimized apps (i.e. users that would usually buy a 5870) it'll likely be much slower due to the low clock and memory speed on the card. And, WOW isn't CUDA aware
    Oh well
    Dan

  • Is it worth it?  ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit

Hey all. After several frustrating hours scouring the forums for information relating to graphics cards for early 2008 MP's, I thought I would just ask my question. Is it worth buying the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit from the Apple store? What I mean is, is there a new graphics card option coming soon seeing as the 5870 seems to be "Unavailable" for ages.
I have heard rumours that Apple bought up all the ATI 5870's and ATI is re-branding and it's cheaper to buy a PC compatible card and flash it but I don't want to mess around with all that (I would have a windows machine if I did). I've checked newegg and OWC and they both only have the quadra card and there is no way I'm paying that much. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT so any upgrade is good I suppose, I just always seem to buy something right before Apple releases the new version!
    Any suggestions is appreciated thanks.
    D

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    Is the 5770 worth it?
It's not a bad price for a card that runs circles around the 8800:
    http://www.barefeats.com/wst10g6.html
Would be nicer if the 5870 was available.
It is billed as the Top Gun for Macs (currently), but the reported price makes it a dear upgrade.
As for the future, the 67xx and 68xx cards are in the pipeline, but, if as with the 57xx and 58xx, it may be almost a year before we see a Mac version....

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT, Apple Upgrade Kit vs. BTO Option (Mac Pro 1,1) - Same?

This question pertains to the ATI Radeon X1900 XT Video Card, which Apple offered as a BTO Option for the Mac Pro 1,1.
In September 2007 I purchased my Mac Pro 1,1 (2x Intel Xeon 3GHz Woodcrest) and configured it from Apple with the ATI Radeon X1900 as a BTO Option.
Now I know that a number of people initially experienced some problems with this card, but mine has worked perfectly all along. I run FCP, Aperature, and Adobe CS3, and the X1900 has performed excellent.
    Leading to my question:
I own more than one Mac Pro 1,1. But the other two machines were not configured with the X1900. And for the past couple of years, I've been regularly searching to find (one or more) Genuine, Original Apple ATI X1900 XT Video Cards - either for sale by someone who has pulled out the X1900 from their Mac Pro 1,1; or, from an Official Apple Reseller. However, all that I've been able to find are - what appear to be either a "knock-off" third party version of the X1900 (flashed for Mac Pro), or; people and/or resellers who claim they are selling a Genuine, Original Apple ATI X1900 XT; except there's one major difference between all of those other video cards, and my X1900 (BTO from Apple, Mac Pro 1,1).
My X1900 does not have an S-Video Port. However, all of the other X1900 cards I've seen advertised for the Mac Pro are pictured with an S-Video Port - which again, mine does not have one.
I've spoken with both Apple Technical Support and Apple Care Representatives (Sr. Advisors), and I've asked them whether it's possible to identify a Genuine, Original Apple X1900; either by the serial number, or possibly by an Apple Part Number.
The Mac Pro 1,1 "Tech Specs" are listed on Apple's Support Site (support.apple.com/kb/SP30). Here, Apple does provide an Apple Part Number for the X1900 as an upgrade (MA631Z/A); however, nobody from Apple can tell from that part number - whether that Apple Part Number corresponds to an X1900 with an S-Video Port, or whether it's identical to the X1900 that was offered as a BTO Option for the Mac Pro 1,1; or whether that particular X1900 was part of an "Upgrade Kit" for the X1900 - which would've been available to purchase from Apple (Apple Store), sometime late in 2007 and/or early 2008. Further, I also know that Apple changed the actual Service Part Number a few times for the X1900.
What I'm trying to find out:
Has Apple ever directly sold, or, has Apple ever officially offered the X1900 w/ S-Video Port - under one of the following Apple Service Part Numbers (661-3297, 661-4335, 661-4911)??
    Sorry for the super-long post.
It's just that this has been bugging me for like two years.
    Thanks,
    John

When I write, I often find that I end posts with what I wanted to say. Put summary at top helps.

I don't know. I do know some X1900s are being replaced even if out of warranty, as are 2600s also.
    For $249 the ATI 5770.

  • Reviews for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?

There's no review at the Apple Store on this [ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMx OA]. Googled and found nothing related to the Mac kit. Mostly PC based.
Should I consider this card? I need a spare/replacement graphics card for my Mac Pro (early 2008). The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card has failed me twice.

    Just came out on barefeats:
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal14.html
Shows new drivers with 285, also compares 4870.
If you play a lot of games on the windows side, you might also want to consider the 4890. I has recently became flashable (if you're into that kinda thing). It has a lot more leeway to be overclocked. Close to (or if your lucky) hitting the 1 Ghz core clock speed, gives very close comp to the 285, and at fraction of the price. You can get an XFX 4890 on newegg for $195.
