ATI Radeon 9600 Pro fuzziness

Hi,
I have a G5 tower with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro running two fujitsu LCDs, both at 1680x1050, 60 hz. Today, they're both incredibly fuzzy - bordering on unusable. They remain this way if I step down to lower res.
This is only on my login. My wife's login = crisp and clear. Likewise the login screen. Have tried resetting the PRAM, no change.
One thing I do notice today is that the very far right edge of the menu bar is bleeding over into the right screen, which I don't recall it used to do.
Also, the display is shifting about on the horizontal axis, like it's trying to find a better line sync or something (to use an old CRT metaphor)
Any help much appreciated, Robbie

  • ATI Radeon X800 XT or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition for 30" display

I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro installed in my G5 2.0 DP and it is running my 30" display, but I am having some isssues when I play DVD's the pictures seems to skip every few seconds like it isn't playing fast enough, or it hesitates. I bought the ATI Radeon X800 XT and wanted to know if that would be a better card before I switch it out.

The X800 is a faster card but DVD playback doesn't put much load on the card, so the X800 probably won't help. If it skipping on more than one DVD, the DVD drive is probably having problems. Cleaning the lens ay help.

  • 1360 X 768 Resolution with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

Maybe this isn't the right forum, but I've been surfing for hours with no luck so please forgive me if this seems out of place.
I output a show recently to QuickTime at 720 24 fps. I'd like to watch it on my 40" Samsung 720 HD TV. I cabled up and managed to get a picture in nearly fullscreen and nearly appropriate aspect ratio, but it doesn't look all that hot. Samsung tells me I want to set my Display settings on my Mac to 1360 x768 to achieve optimum picture. I told them I don't have that option in my settings. They said I probably need to update my driver on my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card. I did, still no 1360x768 setting. They said I might want to install the ATI Displays utility. That doesn't seem to offer anything useful. ATI's online support says I might want to install ATI's latest ROM updater, but I can't find any such thing even though the web seems full of mentions of such a beast.
Anyone have any ideas or any suggestion as to where I should post this question?

  • Total lockup KM4M-L w/ ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

OK, its been a while since ive had any problems at all but unfortunately I am getting problems with my KM4M-L based PC completely locking up.
I am pretty sure that this is a graphics related issue since it started when I installed an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB.
I tried removing old nVidia drivers completely, have jusy formatted and re-installed Windows XP Pro with SP2, but the problem is still there.  I have tried the card on AGP 2x and 4x, with fastwrite enabled and disabled, and different memory allocations of 64MB and 128MB, but still no joy.
I have also tried the latest two sets of drivers from ATI with no joy, and the latest chipset drivers & BIOS revisions from MSi.
Does anyone know of any compatibility issues between my hardware or something I may have missed in my frustration? Thanks, Huw

OK, I have tried a number of things since posting last.
I have been running the PC without the video card, just using the onboard graphics, which didnt seem to help.
I have air dusted, and replaced the GPU heatsink and fan for a large machined one with a more appropriate size of fan but im still getting some problems:
The first is the complete lock-up, which still occurs at seemingly random intervals with no pattern at all.
The second problem is quite frequently on botting the computer, when windows has loaded, the screen display seems to breakdown into random pixels as soon as I start using anything, the effect is hard to describe but its almost as if the screen is being airbrushed, very odd
I should add that I have also removed the Maxtor HDD, since last posting, and also run a series of MemCheckx86 tests which seem to indicate that the RAM is fine.
Any ideas anyone? I am starting to suspect that there may be multiple problems contributing to this annoyance

  • PPC G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro monitors not getting signal

    hi there.
I have a PPC G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro graphics card and I cannot get a monitor to work properly. I am trying an old Apple Studio Display (circa 2001) and a Viewsonic VA520.
It seems like the Apple display should work, but all I get is a black screen. I ran it through a DVI to ADC adapter and had it working for a short period of time, but for some unknown reason it went back to the black screen.
The Viewsonic gives a 'NO SIGNAL' screen and not much else.
Both of these monitors have worked on other G5's. I am guessing this is a graphics card issue.
I appreciate any kind or helpful words! Thank you.

I'm having a similar problem with the G5 not recognizing a VGA monitor on either video out. I have no problem using two monitors with the DVI inputs but I need to use a VGA video splitter for a third screen. It worked at the beginning of this week, and now it refuses any VGA out, even without the splitter, just going into directly into the VGA in of one of my working monitors via a DVI-VGA adapter(i've tried different ones). I read another post about trashing "displays" and "windowserver" preference files but i haven't yet tried that..any clues??

  • Help : Will ATI Radeon 9600 Pro run a 30" Cinema Display ? ? ?

just a simple question as the subject suggests /
    i have a 1st generate Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHZ / with Radeon 9600 Pro
graphics card . i would simply like to know if it will plug an play nicely
with a 30 inch monitor - be it the Apple Cinema Display or Dell -
anyone have any definitive answers / my thanks in advance
    best,
    lex

You need a different graphics board with dual-link DVI to run the 30" at full resolution. The AGP cards Apple sold that have dual-link DVI ports are:
ATI Radeon 9650 XT (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (two dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL (two dual-link DVI)
Apple doesn't sell these as retail items, but might sell them as replacement parts, or you could look for them used. Be sure to get Mac versions.
There are two new graphics boards that will work:
ATI Radeon® X800 XT MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one ADC, one dual-link DVI)

ATI Radeon® 9600 Pro PC & MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)

  • MS-6309 motherboard and ATi radeon 9600 Pro

I have a MS-6309 motherboard. I have recently installed an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB graphics card and am having some problems. I am running Windows 98. I can't get Direct 3D and AGP Texture Acceleration (this is disabled) to work. I want to download the latest drivers for my motherboard but don't know which link to choose on the motherboard drivers page of the MSI web site.
    The problems that occur are:
    1) The screen freezes up
    2) The graphics on the screen go blurry
    3) Everything stops and the monitor switches off
I am sure this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue. Please can someone help me!

chances are you need a better psu than you had before actually

In 2. G5 von 2003 geht die Karte einfach wunderbar. Ich hofe das Ich damit helfe den Tausenden da draussen die gleiche Problem haben vor allem in Apple forum, und keiner hat Lösung.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and 2560 x 1600

    Hi,
I've got a Radeon 9600 pro and just purchased a new 30" display. However, I can't seem to get it running at 2560 x 1600 - does this card support this resolution?

You will need a graphics card with dual-link DVI.
    Starting with the fastest:
ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB (ADC, dual-link DVI)
    <http://www.welovemacs.com/0831xeghr.html>
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 MB (Two dual-link DVI)

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

According to Apple Support my G4 is a Digital audio model sold to someone around March 2001. It also states that - 1, it can take the ATI 9600 Pro.- 2, It cannot take the ATI 9600 Pro. Being totally confused, I fitted it in the AGP slot to try it. this resulted in the computer failing to start, I mean nothing started.
Replacing the original card it started as normal, so now I don't know if it is the card, or the model of G4. I really would like to upgrade this Mac if possible, as being new to Macs but not to computing, I am impressed with it.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to discussions.
Unfortunately it partly depends on which version of the Radeon 9600 you have, although there can be problems with them all. I assume it is a Mac version rather than a generic PC version which won't work at all (unless flashed, i.e. had the firmware updated with the Mac version of the ROM).
There's a combined PC and Mac version with 256MB VRAM. On release this was advertised by ATI to work in all AGP x4 G4 models, including the Digital Audio. However, shortly afterwards a number of people experienced problems using it in the Digital Audio and Quicksilver models, whereby no video would be shown. ATI then released a support note stating these particular models weren't supported, leaving just the MDD and FW800 models. In short it's pot luck whether it will work or not. I've been lucky in that I have one in my Quicksilver and it works perfectly, but others haven't been so lucky. More info can be found here:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/9600mac_pcedition.html
There's also an AGP x8 version which was shipped with the Power Mac G5s which had 64MB VRAM (I think). These can be made to work in AGP x4 models, including the Digital Audio, but some pins have to be taped over, otherwise the computer won't boot. Some companies, OWC I think, sold this version already modified for use in the G4s. More info can be found here:
    http://themacelite.wikidot.com/pins-3-and-11
So... I guess Apple support are right, it can take the 9600 and it can't!

  • ATI Radeon 9600 PRO Graphics Card

I am thinking of upgrading my graphics card, my computer came with a Nvidia Geforce4 mx, I was at the apple store and noticed a few people having problems with this card. I was wondering if anyone out there has any info for me about the odds of this card working on my Quicksilver G4 933 MHz. Iam driving a Cinema Display 20 inch. I really like gaming online and could use the added memory that the ATI Radeon Pro 9600 has, plus my curent card has problems with full screen games.

    StephanZcat,
I've been out of town for a bit and just saw your post and links. I'll do some research and see if I can come up with something. ...and maybe we can get some other experts in here.
    JBernstein:
Apple usually has a disclaimer about all 3rd party upgrades to Mac's that states they 'do not support them'. So, if it's not for sale at the Apple Store or a Dealer, "It's not supported" - even if it works just fine. For Apple Authorized Do-it-Yourself upgrades there is a page you can access:
    http://www.apple.com/support/diy/
There are many sites that track Mac upgrades, I'll list a few.
For 3rd party upgrades and issues, look at:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
    http://www.barefeats.com/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/benchmark/index.cfm
BTW, your 20' just needs at least a 32MB Video card to push it. Here's a list of most cards that will fit in your 'Sawtooth'. It's set up for Apple Cubes but the information may be helpful in
seeing the differences in video cards
    http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=1327
Note: Your Sawtooth's motherboard does NOT support ADC connections. There is no power supply for them. You will have to make sure whatever Video card you get has DVI and VGA (not ADC).
Look at this for compatible video cards for a Sawtooth:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=166&type=Video&TI=%23TimeForm at%28Now%28%29%2C&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades
Finally, there are a host of 'flashed' PC video cards available for Mac's on Ebay. I have a few and most work fine. If you want to see some options, I suggest you look at what a seller named 'yoyomarv' has for sale. Ask questions before you buy. A card you might consider is a converted NVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600
    It's a start...

  • How can i install ati radeon 9600 pro

    i install kernel-2.6.3 and xfree86-4.4.0, i neet install ati-drivers?
because of i run xf86config seting can't OK!

I believe you should get basic functionality using the "ati" driver from XFree86 - not "radeon".  I know the XFree86 driver in 4.3.99 works with a Radeon 9600, so I suppose 4.4.0 will work too.
However, you will need to install the proper ATI drivers if you wish to obtain full performance from your card.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 4x/8x AGP 256 MB

    Hello all.
I need a little help putting my mind at ease. The original graphics card that came with my G5 (Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL) died on me over the weekend and I find myself needing to replace it. Took my Mac to the Genius bar and the guy told me that I would need to replace the card with an AGP 8x card. So ... I went online and purchase from Macsales.com the ATI 9600 Pro 4x/8x AGP card with 256MB of VRam. I have two 20" cinematic displays, so i need the dual DVI support.
What is getting me a tad nervous is that Apple Care 'recommends' replacing the card with the exact same card OR one that was also being offered at the time of purchase (ATI 9800 XT).
Does anyone foresee a problem plugging in the ATI 9600 card? If you do, can you make a suggestion for a card and direct me to where to buy (the 9600 seems to be backordered everywhere)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The main problem with the 9600 will be that it will feel dog slow after the 6800.
There are reports of other problems, though more hit and miss than any one particular thing.
Easiest place to find a graphics card is eBay.

  • Ati Radeon 9600 Pro to Ati Radeon X800 XT Upgrade?

I am a videographer on a G5 2ghz with Apple Cinema Display and the Ait 9600 Pro card. I ordered Final Cut Studio 2 and have upgraded my equipment to HDV from SD.
I am not sure about how much performance gain is to be had when upgrading video cards. Is it worth it between the 2 I mentioned. It says I have an AGP bus in my system profiler, so I assume I can only use the X800 card.
Performance for color-correction, encoding, and rendering is important to me, so I was wondering if anybody could explain what kind of gains I would see. I don't understand how the specs would translate efficiency-wise.
Here are the specs for each card:
    9600: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/469250-REG/ATITechnologies_100435065_Radeon_9600_Pro256MB.html
    X800 XT: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=ATRX800XTM&is=REG&Q =&O=productlist&sku=469237

I have had the X800 for over a year now and have been loving it.
You will notice the most increase in Motion. The more GPU you can give FCP the better it will run.
    Enjoy
