ATI Radeon X1900 XT & Leopard bad mix

I continue to have bad video problems and system freezes. As a movie editor this is killing my business. I have repeatedly asked for assistance from Apple and they have gone mum. Graphic lines prevade my screen, I can't take screen shots. Try and work in spaces on different projects results in a system freeze and loss of hours of work on end. Apple had to have known of these graphic problems with the X1900 yet they went right ahead and released Leopard, provided no caution to those of us who spent thousands of dollars on high end systems and 30" Apple displays.
NONE of these problems ever came up with Tiger. Not a one. Yet my business and income is going straight down the tubes because of Leopard. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get (1) assistance from Apple to resolve these graphical problems and/or (2) their own advice on tricks, tips or workarounds I may be able to use to at least get some work done?
I cannot take on new work and feel confident I can complete it.

I have tried all of the advice offered from cleaning the heat sink to installing the latest firmware and drivers. Apple Tech support has been ridiculous and this morning I had no alternative but to back peddle to Tiger. I have lost so much work, applications that will take months to find and reinstall, had to pay for updates that were now considered "new" installs and I remain furious with Apple.
For those who say "back up" I did make a backup on to the external drive of my previous system but was assured time and again by Apple Geniuses and tech support that the problems I was experiencing would dissipate and/or be corrected quickly. I had no alternative but to erase the backup if I was going to utilize Time Machine (because the external simply isn't THAT big). Believing Apple was my mistake and believing in Leopard was the bigger mistake.
At the moment my biggest concern is getting my iPhone to show up in iTunes. It isn't recognized at all and I have no idea how to change that. I'm at the latest release and plug it into the dock does nothing but recharge the battery. iPhoto won't open at all (it was suggested that iPhoto was denying iTunes to see it) and I don't know how to fix that unless I reinstall all over again. This has taken me hours and hours to get back to a working system.
I could not run the machine for more than an hour before it would simply freeze solid. I ran TechTool on every piece of hardware, ram and hard drives and they all passed with flying colors.
Is the problem Leopard? Definately. I can confirm that now because with Tiger my system is back to a solid foundation, my screen displays as it should. Sadly I had to learn a horrible lesson in believing in Apple's claims which I now take with a grain of salt. Months of work is gone or has to be pieced back together. I lost the majority of stuff from the main drive - pictures, graphics, music, movies, receipts for software residing in the documents folder. No matter how often I tried to back those folders/directories up it would never reach completion because the system would freeze.
"That can't the fault of Leopard..." - of course it is. Now back with Tiger I've had no system freezes. It isn't a hardware problem. I paid over $7,000 for this system and its additional software programs (FCP, Aperture, Logic, CS3, etc) and Apple trumpeted Leopard as "ready to go" when it is no where near ready for the professional user.
I won't do it again and I won't believe in Apple again. I am disgusted, angry and disgruntled.

  • ATI RADEON X1900 XT Bad resolution display with SNOW LEOPARD

    Hi all!!
I just install a clean version of snow leopard 10.6.2 on my mac pro and everything works good.
Only problem I have, less resolution choice.
    I am stuck with 1600x1200 60 Hz but before I was in 1600x1024 76hz.
This mac has a ATI RADEON X1900 XT graphic card.
I try on different mac pro with geforce and the resolution display is good.
It is not the problem of the graphic distorsion in top site of safari,
    It's totally in the display.
    Thank you!
    BP

I use the same video card without any difficulty, under 10.6.2, in an older MacPro. If your card works OK in Leopard, then it's not likely to be a hardware problem. If it happens in Leopard, too, then a hardware failure is possible.
If this happened to me I'd clean the card's contacts, make sure that its supplemental power connection was tight on both ends, and re-install the card.
If the problem remained, I'd try the card in a different slot. If it persisted, I'd do a clean-install on a different drive and boot from it. If the problem recurred with a clean-installed second boot drive, then I'd suspect a hardware problem on the card or, less likely, on the logic board.
At this point I'd visually inspect the "GPU PRESENT" LED on the logic board, under the memory cage, next to PCI slot 1. As you use something completely non-conductive to press the "DIAG LED" button, which is adjacent to the diagnostic LEDs, see if the "GPU_PRESENT" LED comes on. If that LED stays off, it means the machine's EFI (extensible firmware interface) was unable to configure the graphics card, which would indicate a hardware problem on the graphics card, or possibly on the logic board. If the diagnostic LED comes on, it means EFI could configure the card. This does not necessarily mean that the card is functioning properly. The LED staying off, however, would strongly suggest some kind of a hardware problem.
If you have access to another graphics card, see if a similar problem occurs using it. Short of a thorough circuit-check in a shop, that's the only practical way to determine if it's a PCI card or logic board problem. Either way, there'd be a hardware repair/replacement on the horizon.

  • Leopard ATI Radeon X1900 XT Freezing Issue, fixed with 10.5.2?

Mac Pro (8-core) original 3.0Ghz 8 core. Purchased October 2007. Ran Tiger 10.4.10 from the box. updated to 10.4.11. ATI Firmware update was not required as it was pre-installed. Never had a crash. Installed Leopard 2 days after release. Installed 10.5.1 the day of release. No problems so far...
A week later watching the "Jelly" iTunes Visualizer, the Screen froze, but iTunes kept playing... The machine was reachable over SSH but very much useless as a reboot command hung. Hard reset, went about my business. A day later unit froze during iTunes Jelly Visualizer again. this time music also crashed. As I approached to reboot the unit noticed very loud video card fan noise. Extracted the burning hot card, later compress air removed some clogging dust bunnies. Reinstalled card and no more freezes for 2 weeks. Freezes again, this time watching youtube in Safari. Made sure data backup is up to date. Performed an Archive and Install of leopard, ran all updates to 10.5.1. This time Mac Pro was fine for a week .... *Freeze*.
Called apple care, after having to explain to a rep what itunes visualizer was, referred to iPod specialist, who transfered me to Mac Pro specialist, 1 hour later, thoroughly explain issues to rep, who after 45 minutes was convinced issue with HW and not SW . Apple sends Do It Yourself repair video card. I replaced it. 4 days later unit Froze again. This time watching movie on VLC...
A week later 10.5.2 was released, and shortly thereafter Leopard Graphics Update 1. So far **nervously knock on wood** no more freezes. I am hoping that whatever black magic was included in these recent updates fixes the Leopard crashes with ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Needless to say this is the last ATI Radeon I "buy".
I need to know and track other users findings issues and experience with Leopard and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT on a Mac Pro. Been reading about a lot of issues with Leopard and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT on the these boards. Google turns up info galore. ...
    I am holding my breath

Spoke too soon. Today as I was leaving the house I set the Mac Pro to sleep. When I attempted to wake the machine upon return, display 1 became all garbled. Display 2 was still visible and the mouse moved, but I was not able to click any windows. I ssh'd in with my macbookpro and was able to do a "sudo reboot". In the process it got stuck and in a loop I received:

  • 10.5.5 + PowerMac G5 w/ ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) Bad combo.

10.5.5 is not displaying video properly. Elgato seemed to have narrowed it down to a specific computer setup with an OpenGL change from the 10.5.5 update.
    http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
My screen shot is the one used in the knowledgebase document. I now see that Apple DVD Player and flip4mac in quicktime have the same look. The audio is fine. VLC can play all of the files with no problem.
If you have the same setup:
PowerMac G5 tower (single or multiple processor), with a ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) please post if you are having this problem or not.

The fastest way (which will take a while) is to:
    1) Make sure you have an up to date backup with time machine.
    2) Boot from your Leopard install disc or disc that came with your computer.
    3) When choosing an install method you can choose an archive and install or erase and install.
    4) After the OS is installed it will ask you if you want to restore files from another drive, partition, mac or time machine.
    5) Choose time machine and get your files restored.
    6) Once the mac is started up.
    7) Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html and download the 10.5.4 combo update.
8)You then need to use software update to install all of the updates that came after 10.5. UNCHECK the 10.5.5 Combo Update. You can even select to ignore that update by checking the box next to so that it is selected and then selecting ignore update from the update menu in the menu bar.
I have not tried using Time Machine to go back an OS version. I will experiment with that.
I can also tell you how to clone your drive to another drive using the same DVD as above and two hard drives.
    I hope this helps.

  • ATI Radeon x1900

My MacPro was purchased with Tiger and a ATI Radeon x1900 graphics card. Anyone know if the card will run when I do the Snow Leopard Upgrade? I first contacted AMD, and they replied back stating I need to contact Apple about this.
Message was edited by: John Luke1

If the Mac Pro was purchased with an Apple-provided (built-to-order) ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card installed, you should have no problems booting with the Snow Leopard installer disc. You might have some problems if it was a retail card bought separately.

  • Crash with ATI Radeon X1900 XT and second HD display (DVI) ?

hi ! i have a realy tough one for you guys : since 3-4 days i've been getting this realy strange (and scary!) kernal panic screen / crashes / freeze with my macpro dual 2.66 with ati radeon X1900 xt.
the crashes keep coming while doing extensive work (video converting, renders) or just letting the macpro running doing nothing much all night long...
now this is what i found for now : if i disconect my 2nd display (samsung syncmaster 2493hm HD in DVI 1080p) it seem to be stable. when i reconnect it sometime it can run again with this 2nd display for a while but when i leave a render all night long the next morning it will be frozen, nothing on screen (all black).
after rebooting it get this crash report from the system :

anyone ever see this problem ? at 1st it seem to be related to my ATI card... but i'm no expert so if anyone can understand part of the crash log let me know ! thanx !!
also forget to say : did all the full apple hardware test + tech tool pro test (app that come with apple care) and nothing was wrong, all ok.

Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • What is a good replacement for the ATI Radeon X1900 XT on a late 2007 Mac Pro

I recently took my late 2007 Mac Pro to the Apple Store because it was running quite loud.  They diagnosed the problem as the fan on the ATI Radeon x1900 XT video card.  Whie the card works fine otherwise, I was thinking of replacing it.  I noticed some online recommendations that I need to upgrade to perhaps the Radeo HD 4870 if I want to install FCP X on this machine.  I do use the Mac Pro for video editing, but haven't switched yet to FCP X.  Anyone have a suggestion on a replcement video card that will work both on this machine and will be compatible with FCP X.
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and ATI Radeon X1900 XT

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 running 10.6.1 and BootCamp.
I had a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video card in it and it ran well under BootCamp.
    I installed a ATI Radeon X1900 XT.
Under BootCamp the 2 cards seem incompatible, with an error message that the driver on the Nvidia card has been disables due to an incompatibility with the other card.
Is there a solution for this?
If I wanted 2 cards inside would they both need to be the ATI's or Nvidia's?
    Thanks

Hi I would maybe get a Apple Upgrade Kit the GT 120 is 512MB's & dose not use all 16 lanes as it like to make you think & will work on 2006 Mac Pro's at $149.00 I would say if you just want more displays get two & eBay your old cards. Please know if you game you will want more power but if only for more displays this 1 slot card is great.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 120 or ATI Radeon X1900... which is better?

    Hi-
I currently have the ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card installed in my Mac Pro 2.26 Nehalem. I'm not having any issue's with the card except that the fans turn On quite frequently, and they're a little loud.
I'm not using it for any games, etc... My primary use is with Pro Tools (a music DAW application).
The ATI Radeon X1900 is running a Apple 30" display and a Sony Bravia 46" LCD.
If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
    Thanks in advance.

If your Mac Pro came with ATI Radeon X1900, then it needs a card with EFI-32 firmware. The NVIDIA GeForce 120 has EFI-64 firmware, and won't work in the pre 2008 Mac Pro. The only upgrade for early Mac Pros is the ATI Radeon HD 4870

(Despite what Apple says, it will work in any Mac Pro.)
You will need a Mini DisplayPort adapter for the second display,

  • Upgrade MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. to recommended system requirements for heli simulator: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB.

I want to install a helicopter simulator into my MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. Recommended system requirements for the heli simulator are: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB (at least as fast as NVIDIA 8600, 9400 or ATI Radeon HD 2400). Is there such a graphics card available that will work in my Mac Pro?

Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • After Effects 7 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT

    Hi everyone,
I use Adobe After Effects 7 a lot and I'm not happy with my current machine (PowerPC G5 2x1.8GHZ, 2GB DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon X800 XT), it is too slow to work smoothly when I have several layers and effects going on. Previewing the work on the timeline (OpenGL or Adaptative resolution) is painfully slow and takes on my nerves. I believe this is mainly due to my graphics card, and the fact is not 100% compatible with OpenGL on After effects.
I'm ready to upgrade with a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad Xeon with ATI Radeon X1900 XT, but only if I'm going to enjoy a real improve with After Effects 7, as this is my main editing application right now.
Does anybody have experience with this configuration?
Thanks in advance for reading and replies!
    PowerPC G5 2x1.8GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon X800 XT

I have this configuration, but sadly have had no time to play around with After Effects. AE's realtime playback capabilities are limited (especially when compared with something like Motion), so you're probably still going to be rendering to RAM a lot. I believe the OpenGL support is for things like anti-aliasing, blur, and blending modes -- so a faster video card may not automatically equal huge performance boost across the board. Four Xeon cores and a lot of RAM will help it a lot more (see exception below).
Also, AE 7 still has to run under Rosetta which results in a slower performance than if it was native. Also, be aware that there is a limit placed on all Rosetta processes that do not allow them to address more than 1.5GB of RAM combined. This will most likely limit your render speed and preview lengths. See this thread on Adobe's forums for more info:
    http://www.creativecow.net/articles/jonesgraham/AE7_on_IntelMacPro/index.html
EDIT: The above link was to the performance comparisons, but not the original Adobe forum thread. Here it is:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc2401b
However, if you read the thread, and follow the link in it, the author is seeing huge performance gains with AE7 on his MacPro 3GBs over his old dual G5 4.5GBs.
So most likely, you'll see a performance benefit from upgrading. And when an Intel native version of AE ships, things will really fly.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 worth it for only FCP and Color?

    Hello,
I've been looking around these posts for a while and I can't seem to find this specific answer, so I apologize if my question has been asked already.
I am looking to purchase a MacPro tower. I don't use Motion. I don't play video games. I don't need 8 zillion giant monitors. I intend to use the computer mainly for Final Cut Pro 6.0 and probably a fair amount of Color as well.
With this being the case, what are the benefits of the
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB Graphics Card, over the
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB Graphics Card? Is it really worth the money? I've seen some posts that say you won't see a difference in FCP, but is this also true for Color? And if so, what exactly will the difference be?
    Thanks,

Here's what they said at the Color board...
With anything less than an ATI x1900...you may experience issues such as lack of realtime playback, missing support for 10-bit images and 2K frame sizes, no float support for your grade settings.
For this version of Color, ATI is the way to go. I wouldn't go so far as to say an Nvidia card gives you a crippled version of the program, but it's close.

  • Please help: what options do we have other than ATI Radeon X1900 XT

I think my video card (ATI Radeon X1900 XT) is about to die and I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with. (I'm on a 1st gen MacPro, still on Tiger).
What I can't easily figure out from this site, however, is a list of alternative cards I could purchase that will fit in this machine. I gather from the ratings that the ATI X1900 has failed for just about everyone that has used it intensely. And I'd like to avoid buying the same one that is about to fail for me now, but how can I tell what my alternatives are and if they will fit in the slot and/or be compatible with my machine?
I have been to the Mac Pro spec area, and it lists these as the "build to order" options:
    * ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (two dual-link DVI)
    * NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB (stereo 3D, two dual-link DVI)
    * Two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
    * Three NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
    * Four NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
are those the only cards I can choose from? Are there any other better options?
Forgive me if I sound like a totally idiot. I'm just trying to learn...

You should visit Bare Feats and see the various reviews and benchmarks. You have several options now available besides the ones that came originally with your model. There is now an NVidia 8800 card in a version for pre-2008 MPs, the ATI 2600, and the new ATI 3870 just released. You can learn more at Bare Feats and by searching the MP forums.
You have posted this topic in the MacBook Pro forum which is the wrong forum for your question.

  • Signal Problem MacPro 1.1 w/ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Before I run out an purchase a new video card wanted to run my issue by the forum. I have a MacPro 1.1 (early 2007) with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT card. When booting up recently my screen is blank, no signal. If I switch video ports it fires up.
Is this a video card issue or something else with the OS (running Mac OS X 10.6.6 (10J567))?
Would appreciate a little insight from the forum.
    Thanks,
    Koyangie

    1. There was a replacement program that ended 1/31/2011 for some X1900
    2. Any owner by know should have known and been doing a good deep cleaning for dust, and upping the system fans a tiny notch (900 rpm is quiet but more efficient) to keep more air circulating
    3. While you can't directly measure GPU temps, you can with other sensors
    4. Do you hear the video card fans or system fans working hard?
Poor design with the cooling chamber on X1900 made it a dust magnet and headache.

  • Need Power Connector Cable for ATI Radeon X1900 XT

I need the 6pin power connector/cable for my ATI Radeon X1900 XT to work with my Mac Pro.
I can't use the card as I lost the small cable pior to installation and now I can't find one anywhere.
It is the 6 pin cable that connects into the Radeon X1900 XT and the other end into the Mac Pro motherboard.
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you

Worst service ever at the local(Canada) Montreal/Laval Apple Store........''go ask ATI or call Apple, etc....''
    that was helpfull
I go to Apple because it is an Apple card and I get service like I was asking for a PC.
Typical of Apple, you buy their stuff then they turn your back on you in case that you need some help.
