ATI x1900 XT is the only upgrade path?  Doomed?

Pretty straight up question here. I wanna play some video games on my Mac Pro. Am I doomed to the ATI x1900 XT. (at $399)
I say this because I just returned my x1900 when I found out it may be possible to upgrade to the new Mac Pro video cards... I'd hate to order another one because it's the "ONLY" option available... (no jokes about getting a quadro)
However I could just get a PC video card and run vista.... (bad taste in my mouth)

The 24" iMac probably does make a lot more sense for many people. That doesn't mean Apple is losing focus on the "Pro" marketplace. (For that matter, who says Sony has done that? They have a very high-end line of "pro" series HD 3CCD camcorders, for example.)
IMHO, Apple has just "upped the ante" to the point where a "Pro" machine really IS a "Pro" machine. If you don't run one of a handful of "pros-only" apps (like Maya or Final Cut Studio 2), you don't see why you should pay "so much more" for things like octo-core Xeon processors, instead of a single "desktop PC class" Pentium 4 dual-core chip in your machine.
Only true "pro" uses really exist for things the Mac Pro offers like hardware SAS RAID drives, or the dual gigabit ethernet ports, too. Only true "pros" have a legitimate need for things like "up to 32GB of system RAM" (you can only get up to 4GB in that iMac). And it's probably even fair to say that as a rule, only "pros" need the ability to attach 4 simultaneous displays to their computer. (With a $20 adapter, you can get a 2nd. display on an iMac, but that's it.)
The "problem" has been, in the past, Apple left iMac owners feeling like they had a relatively "weak" computer - good enough for "grandma and grandpa" to do email with and type letters on, but not necessarily enough for a more knowledgeable "enthusiast" or "power user". So those types were paying for the G5 towers and Mac Pros. Now, it seems like Apple's drawing more of a line, saying "Ok ... we've beefed up the iMacs and cut the prices. You really should be fine with one of these, and if you need more upgrades, we put a bunch of ports on it for external hard drives and what-not."
All that's really left to complain about is the video ... and Apple is stubborning pushing the idea (just like the 1 button mouse thing) that a top-end video card just shouldn't be necessary.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • What are all the possible upgrade paths from Tiger to Snow Leopard?

What is are all the ways to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard?
Can I buy the 29.00 Snow Leopard upgrade? Or is my only path forward to do the Snow Leopard box set for Tiger? I know my model isn't support but this is a question about the upgrade path from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a Power PC dual 2 gig G5 running OS X 10.4.10. I know at some point that Leopard will not support the power PC platform, but I also know I probably will have one more upgrade path before my computer is no longer supported. I have not upgraded because My machine runs perfect. But I also know that a lot of my software will not run when I upgrade. Pro Tools, Maya,Mocha, various plug ins for Pro Tools. What path should I take to my final upgrade to the latest OS?
    Thanks in advance

  • Did I misunderstand the CS5 upgrade path.

I have CS3 Design Premium. Trying to install the CS5 upgrade ,( just Photoshop). But "a qualifying product cannot be found". 10.6.4

If you have the suite, you MUST upgrade the WHOLE SUITE.  You cannot upgrade from the suite to a single application.
Contact Adobe customer service for instructions on how to ask for a refund, which you can do during the first 30 days.

  • What is the best upgrade path from LiveCycle Designer 8.0?

Back in June 2010, I developed a website for a client which included some interactive forms created with LiveCycle Designer 8.0 (came with Adobe CS3.) He recently brought to my attention the fact that the data filled in by his customers on the forms does not display in PDF docs on his iPhone or Android smartphone (the PDFs and filled-in data display fine via desktop browsers.) Can anyone suggest the best (least expensive, least painful... I don't want to rewrite his site in HTML5) solution? E.g., upgrade my LiveCycle Designer 8.0 version and reinstall the forms on his site? Would that be to Acrobat X Pro? Does a second set of forms need to be created for mobile format? Suggestions would be appreciated. Here is his web page with links to the existing 3 forms. Thanks. -Bob C.

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. Since my post, I noticed that Adobe offers free apps for iOS and android devices "to view and work with PDF files." Called: Adobe Reader X for mobile. Any idea whether these apps would resolve the issue described above? (Filled-in data on forms created on desktops not displaying on mobile devices?) Unfortunately, I don't have an android device to test with and my iPhone hardware is not current enough to load the ios app. -Thank you.

  • What is the correct upgrade path for MCITP: Enterprise Administrator?

So anyway, I passed 70-417 the other day so I'm now MCSA 2012, the question is what other exam(s) need to be taken?
Now on the Microsoft website it says 70-413 and 70-414, but I got a cryptic e-mail the other day which seems to imply I can take 70-980 instead.  The website is a bit vague:
    https://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-980.aspx
"Recertification" - how can you be recertified for something that only came into existence with the 2012 certifications?  And it says under "Who should take this exam":
"This exam is for individuals looking to maintain their MCSE: Server Infrastructure certification. It is based on the exam objectives from
    Exam 413  and
    Exam 414."
So that makes it sound as though I can take it instead of those two exams.  What's the answer?

how can you "recertify" for something that didn't exist before?
Think you answered your own question. Recertification only applies to those people who are already MCSE.
Recertification is required every 3yrs and if you don't recertify, your MCSE certification becomes Inactive.

  • Is Lightroom Creative Cloud (CC) the only upgrade option from LR 5.7?

I currently have LR 5.7.  When I start LR a dialog box is displayed indicating that there is an upgrade available.  When I click the upgrade button it takes me to an LR Creative Cloud web page.  Am I to believe that if I want to upgrade, I have to subscribe to creative cloud?
    I really hope not!

Thank you for your response JimHess,
Please allow me to explain how I got to this spot:
I have always done that method in the past as you described. But for some reason for me to receive this update of Lr5 to Lr6 (which now I see technically speaking is termed 'upgrade'), I was being directed to the page as the original poster of this thread indicated. I followed the directions by signing out then back in and had to Install Lr on to my computer. Confusing for me because I thought I could just update / upgrade from a current Catalog I have created and then follow suit as you instructed.
Now I found the Catalog I originally updated and continued on again "File->Open Recent and choose your other catalogs" and it is working. Thank you. I now see my error by not opening the other Cats from the one that was 'upgraded'.
Now, before I complete my other Cats with the upgrade I went to investigate the folder structure of the upgraded Cat and I see the title of my 'Cat' followed by '-2lrcat.lock' and the '-2lrcat.journal' so I have double of the files with the appended '-2' as the new to be used. Is this correct? If so what can I do with the original, can I delete?
I am also seeing Adobe Lightroom CC 2015 no longer the LR version. Why?
Finally, when I go to right click the Lr icon in my doc to select the Cat I wish to work from I am seeing more than I need to choose from and they are doubles. What can I do to clean this? Is it clearing the list and then going into the program from Explorer to select the newly created '-2lrcat.lock' and opening from there to start a new list for the icon in my doc?
    Thank you advance.

  • Upgrade path to Siebel 8.1.1.5

    Hi,
Does any one know the exact upgrade path to Siebel 8.1.1.5 from 8.0.0.6 SIA.
    This is for SIA Applications.
    Thank you

    Wilson,
The same document has this note, which is causing the confusion.
For Siebel Enterprise Applications customers who are upgrading to the Siebel 8.1.1.3 Fix Pack, the upgrade path is as follows: Upgrade to Siebel version 8.1.1, Siebel 8.1.1.1, or Siebel 8.1.1.2, and then upgrade to Siebel 8.1.1.3. This applies to a Siebel database upgrade only.
8.x to 8.1.1 is fine but the going to 8.1.1.3 FP is not clear.
8.1.1.3 FP maintenance doc doesn't talk about any upgrade.

  • Recommended Upgrade path for Apex 3.1.1

    Hi Everyone,
just wondering what the recommended upgrade path from Apex 3.1 to 3.1.1 is. Is it just installing the Patch or is there an upgrade option for the full-3.1.1-version?
The reason i'm asking is not everyone has access to metalink and can therefor not download the patch from there but the full version from OTN
    thanks,
    Peter

    Peter,
As with our previous patch sets, we release a full, new install on OTN and only release the patch via MetaLink (it is one of the benefits for customers with database support). You can use the full release to upgrade from 3.0 (or before) to 3.1.1 but to get from 3.1 to 3.1.1 you need either the patch or you need to do a new install.

  • Is there no upgrade path to Photoshop CS6 from Creative Suite 5 Design Premium?

Is there no upgrade path to Photoshop CS6 from Creative Suite 5 Design Premium?

Correct. The only upgrade from a Suite is to a Suite. You get a great price reduction by purchasing a suite, what you loose is the ability to upgrade any components individually.

  • Upgrade path for iMac 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo from OSX 10.5.8 to mountain lion

    Hi,
I have an Apple iMac 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gbytes of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
It is currently running MAC OSX 10.5.8 --
I would like to know the proper upgrade path to the most current version of OSX which is
    compatible with this hardware.
    Thanks!

The starting point is to call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask to purchase a copy of Mac OS 10.6 "Snow Leopard." It will cost about US$20 plus shipping. When you receive it, install it and use Software update to get to OS10.6.8; the updates are free to that point.
Now you will have the App Store app in your Dock. You can use that to purchase Mac OS 10.8 "Mountain Lion," the lastest. According to the MacTracker database, your iMac--which is either a Mid-2007 or Early 2008--can support 10.8.
    CAVEATS:
    • your iMac is at or near the minimum level to suport 10.8; performance may not be stellar
    • if you currently run any old PowerPC apps (like Office 2004), they will still work unders 10.6 but no higher. You will have to upgrade to newer versions to continue using them. Office 2008 runs on either PPC or the newer Intel Macs. Office 2011 runs only on Intel Macs.

  • Upgrade path for Cisco EIM/WIM v4.2(5)

    Hi all,
I need some help in understanding what is required to deploy Cisco EIM/WIM v4.2(5) for Cisco UCCE.
    a) media kit received contained v4.2(1), 3rd party tools, v4.2(4a) SR & v4.2(5a) MR
    b) based on the docs, v4.2(1) needs to be installed first followed by v4.2(4a) SR and then v4.2(5a) MR
    Some concerns/questions i have is
    a) Since v4.2(1) only supports SQL 2000 and v4.2(5) only supports SQL 2005, does that mean i'll require to purchase both SQL 2000 & SQL 2005? Can I install v.4.2(1) directly on SQL 2005?
    b) Since v4.2(1) only supports BEA WebLogic, is there a way to change it to JBoss when upgrading to v4.2(5)? If so, any idea how that can be done? If not mistaken this is possible when upgrading to v4.3(1).
    c) Is there a way to directly install v4.2(5) without going to the mentioned upgrade path
    Thanks!
    -JT-

    HI
The license is assigned to a MAC address so if you have other NICs available it may cause issues. As the system maybe comparing the wrong NIC. I dont believe you can "Reload" the license. I am all most certain you are hitting a bug with the license file. There are a number around :-(. Below is the most common:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/ps7233/products_tech_note09186a0080a8c0bc.shtml
I know your symptoms do not match "Exactly" but I had the same issue as you and just upgraded to 4.2(5) and then applied ES1. That fixed all my problems. I have attached ES1 for you. If you are still not to sure then i would probably open a TAC case but they are probably going to tell you to upgrade to 4.2.4 or 4.2.5 first.
If you decide to upgrade to 4.2.5 please also take note of the following:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/ps7233/products_tech_note09186a0080a72faf.shtml
You need to make sure that the collation in SQL is set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI. The above guide exsplains how to check this and change it if it is incorrect.
    Thanks,
    Matt
    (Edit)
The patch is to large to upload but you can download it from here for 4.2.5:
    http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/ba8630bc8d6cd87a3b23513eb7700b54
OR if you dont fancy going all the way to 4.2.5 you can download the patch for 4.2.4 here:

  • Standard Upgrade Path from VMWare Server?

I've been using VMWare Server for years to test my software. Specifically I have 2 "beige box" PCs running CentOS running VMWare Server running various versions of Windows Server as domain controllers and file servers as well as numerous workstations. I have a complete mini multi-domain Windows network. When I run the tests for my software it really pushes the 2-3 vms involved with a lot of network communication and some disk activity.
With care and some brute force this has worked well. At least I don't need a stack of PCs. And it's free so it's hard to complain. But unfortunately it's not terribly reliable. The web interface stops working - sometimes only after a day. Clocks drift causing authentication issues. Generally bad things happen if I try to run more than 2 images on the same server. I've gotten to be pretty good at combating these problems but I'm hoping to find something a little more reliable.
So now I'm willing to actually pay for something (gah!) and I would like to upgrade. But VMWare has so many products I just have no idea what I should be looking for.
What is the standard upgrade path from VMWare Server?
    Mike

Ok. Two people say use ESXi so I guess I'll just try to burn an ESXi DVD and see what it's like. But ...
Is performance really good enough to compile large projects and do backups over and so on?
VMware Server has worked well enough for me over the years but performance was not like real hardware. But the real problem was reliability. If I ran more than 2 VMs at a time, eventually they would just get their tentacles in a tangle and I would have to kill them and delete lock files and bah! I'm going to assume by your endorsement that ESXi doesn't have any of these problems.
Also, the machine I'm using is a lowly DELL i660 i3-3240 with 8GB of memory. I paid $429 USD for it at a local consumer electronics store! This is no server. Will it even work?
