Tried to install ATI X1900 on G5 - Ati software does not detect Card - (only old Nvidia card) - initially I removed the old card before installing the replacement x1900 but on boot up black screen - Apple supplied replacement card "but funny old thing" same problem - drew a blank from Apple Support and ATI - any ideas?

Is it the G% version?

It should go in slot 1 (bottom). Did you connect the auxiliary power cable to the connector on the motherboard?
Have you trial a PRAM reset? (Boot with Command-Option-P-R held down until the third tone.)

Ok so I finally got Windows to install on to my Mac Pro. This is a long explanation because it includes a lot of information for users who may be having the same problems I had. My problem is at the bottom, but for those of you who are still stuck on the blank screen, READ ON!
Many have users been having problems installing Windows on Mac Pros with the ATI x1900 video card.
For Example, after running boot camp and loading XP the screen would go blank.
To get around this use the DVI to VGA addapter and plug a seperate monitor in, once the computer has finshed installing Windows, then install the drivers.
At this point my graphics card was still not installed correctly. I downloaded the driver off of the ATI website, however I kept recieving errors. So I unpakaged the driver and had the computer find a driver in that folder. Once this was done I went back and installed the remaining software without errors!
Now, currently I am still having to use a second monitor because my HD 23 inch was just showing a blank screen. To fix this I,
1. Installed the video card controller from the ATI website for the ATI X1900
2. Opened advanced settings and supported HD 1080i
3. Connected my HD monitor in the second DVI slot
4.exteneded onto that monitor
5. Switched that monitor to primary
And Perfect! It works
However, this is where problems began to arise. After customizing everything to my taste, I ran a test within this same program which sets all of your graphics card's settings to the optimal setting. I walked away because it was taking a long time, and when i came back my screen was totally messed up. It looked as if the settings had been changed and it had been moved up. With the top of the windows screen down where the dock is supposed to be, and then the dock right above that. I cannot correct this and it is extremely frustrating!
Is there anyway for me to correct this? It is normal in Mac Mode, but in XP i can't correct it. It just seems like there is one problem after another!

so did you install the bootcamp drivers?
because i had no luck with ati's drivers from their web site but apples drivers worked fine.

To all who are experiencing any of the frequently reported problems with the hardware/software combination listed in the subject heading:
I purchased the ATI X1900 XT as an upgrade fro my Mac Pro in January. I never experienced any issues with the card in OS X Tiger, but several months ago I began to experience overheating issues in Windows XP (Boot Camp) when playing graphics-intensive games. The overheating caused visible graphics corruption/artifacts, graphics system resets and even spontaneous system restarts. The frequency and severity of these symptoms actually increased over time, leading me to believe that the card was either defective or that the overheating was causing degenerative/cumulative damage to the graphics hardware.
I recently upgraded to OS X Leopard, and all **** broke loose. Immediately after upgrading, I began to experience frequent graphics corruption/artifacts (in the form of spurious horizontal lines), system lockups/freezes and spontaneous system restarts. None of these issues were present in Tiger. The system became completely unreliable and essentially unusable.
It was initially a popular belief that Leopard's graphics drivers were somehow buggy or incompatible with the X1900 XT. After my experiences, I don’t believe that’s the case. I think that the issues reported are symptomatic of hardware, not software problems. Leopard is merely a catalyst. Leopard's increased leverage of OpenGL stresses the graphics hardware in ways that Tiger did not, causing an overall increase in graphics hardware temperature. I believe that the glitches/artifacts/system freezes/restarts that I experienced were not due to buggy drivers, but due to the graphics card overheating as a result of the increased load placed on it by Leopard.
I brought my X1900 XT in to my local Apple store today and asked for a replacement. Fortunately, they had one in stock, and they gave me a new card on the spot. The technician was apparently well aware of the issues, and mentioned that they have had a lot of similar problems with new iMacs.
Since installing the new card, I have experienced no graphics corruption, system freezes or spontaneous system restarts, either in OS X Leopard or in Windows XP gaming.
I would urge anyone who is experiencing problems with the X1900 XT (in either Windows or OS X) to have their card replaced by Apple - assuming that their card or system is still under warranty, that is.
I suspect one of two possible scenarios is true:
Theory #1: The Rev 1 X1900 XT is inherently flawed and has problems with overheating, which is exacerbated in OS X by upgrading to Leopard. Due to Leopard's greater leveraging of OpenGL, there is increased thermal stress placed on the card relative to Tiger. The overheating is evident in Leopard as graphics corruption/artifacts, system lockups/freezes and spontaneous restarts. The Rev 2 X1900 XT has (theoretically) corrected the problems inherent in Rev 1.
Theory #2. The thermal management system of the X1900 XT (all revisions) is inherently flawed. The card will slowly cook itself over time, and the effects are degenerative and cumulative. As the age of the card increases, so will the occurrence of graphics corruption, system freezes and spontaneous system restarts, especially when playing graphics-intensive games or running OS X Leopard.
I sincerely hope that Theory #1 is the case. I’ll be watching my system closely as I continue to use the new card, and hopefully there will be no further problems with overheating.
If theory #2 turns out to be true, then Apple has a huge PR nightmare on its hands, as each X1900 XT for the Mac is essentially a ticking time bomb that will self-destruct within months of purchase.
The funny thing is, this isn’t the first time I’ve had graphics card trouble with one of Apple’s “professional” towers. I bought a G5 several years ago when they were first released. I had problems with the stock nVidia graphics card in the form of what came to be known as the dreaded “black screen of death.” This became a commonly reported issue, experienced by many owners of the G5 in its first revision. Apple replaced my card and the problem never reoccurred. I’m hoping that I’ll be as lucky this time around.
I think it’s apparent that Apple’s batting average with graphics cards isn’t exactly stellar. It’s curious, considering that Apple offers a very limited selection of graphics options for their towers. One would think that by Apple only offering 3 graphics options, they would be able to have fairly tight control over the quality of the hardware, and plenty of time and resources to devote to testing. Unfortunately, I’ve had more graphics hardware-related problems on my Macs than any PCs I’ve ever used. That’s embarrassing, and Apple needs to do much better than this.

I replaced my G5 Quad with a Mac Pro 8-core. The Mac Pro's thermal design is far superior to the G5's. The G5 Quad's liquid cooling system has a much bigger task (IBM doesn't publish the thermal dissipation numbers on their PPCs but I suspect they are high) than the more efficient Intel Xeons. The G5 liquid cooling units are troublesome and the issue is something I think Apple is quietly solving by replacing failed liquid cooled G5's (that are still under warranty) with Mac Pros (a very smart PR move). My primary concern when I switched to a Mac Pro was issues with the X1900 XT graphics card failure rates posted on the web and in these discussions. The very latest generation of the X1900 XT (July 2007) are reported to be more reliable. Many G5 owners are still reporting failed cards. Given the much higher thermal environment and the remarks in this thread, I can now see why. The interior of a G5, especially Quad, gets too hot for this ATi card. I had the nVidia GeForce 7800 GT in my Quad. That was a very good card. Still, the issues with the ATi x1900 XT may indeed be a thermal design issue that AMD may need to either address directly, or turn to a 3rd party solution.
I installed a 3rd party cooling alternative, Arctic Cooling's Accelero S1. It's a passive system that replaces that hairdryer fan with a large heat sink. The package includes upgraded heat sinks for the power regulator (much beefier than the stock), and for each memory chip. The heat sink is a large conductive cooling assembly that uses 4 heat pipes. The vendor claims that using this system increases the case temperature by 1°C, which is easily handled by the system cooling system. So far, their claim appears to be valid. Since there's no longer a fan, you can imagine how quiet the system has become. The only installation hitch is that the black support clips were made for the PC version and the Mac Version adds a beefy support rail on the spine of the card. The workaround is to trim off the lower tang of the clips so they just rest against the support rail.
After reading this, I'm tempted to add the "Turbo" option, a couple of high volume low speed fans that fit on the radiator. I'm trying to "stress" the system by running SETI@Home 24/7 while doing all the other work to see how hot and how loud I can get this system. So far, no disappointments. This is the quietest workstation I've ever worked on. Even when "hot", the fans are not loud. The passive cooling system seems to work very well. I left Star Wars-Empire At War up and running in the menu for hours one day and it didn't seem to suffer from any ill effects. I have owned this system for just over a month. I will add more thermal load after I crank the system memory up to 24 or 32 GB. If there are any real cooling issues, I will find out about them next summer. I really dread the prospect of plunking down another $2k for the nVidia 4500 FX (I really don't need the 3D audio support) to get comparable video support.

PC with ATI X1900 Graphics card - Can't drive my 23" Apple display

I recently assembled new PC with A8N-SLI mobo and ATI X1900 All-in-Wonder card (with DVI-I out) driving a new Apple Cinema 23" display. I've not been able to get the display to come up on boot except for a few occasions when I disconnect and reconnect the ADC cable to the power supply after boot. I'm guessing this problem has to do with mixing Apple and PC (OK, it was a gamble).
Any ideas on how to get this combination working?

IPhoto 08 with ATI X1900

Hi guys,
I just bought an ATI X1900 card yesterday and I noticed that when I adjust the contrast slider in iPhoto, the whole screen goes white. This only happens with iPhoto, while my Aperture works fine. I also downloaded the current drivers for the card and am also up to date with software updates.
Is there a fix for this?

OpenGL not available on MacPro ATI X1900 XT 512MB with CS4?

Hi,
i have a MacPro (2x2 2.66GHz, OSX 10.5.4) with 12GB RAM and a ATI X1900 XT 512MB graphic card (ROM: 113-A52027-202) and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
When opening CS4 preferences i can NOT enable the OpenGL Drawing. The feature is greyed out. Under "Detected video card" stands nothing - no card detected. I read the TechNote from Adobe but could not locate any problem. The computer, the graphic card and the driver are up-to-date. (TechNote: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.doexternalId=kb404898#driverversion).
I even tried the "AllowOldGPUS.plugin" from Adobe without any change.
Do others have this problem too? Any idea what to change?

PShock you are correct I must have been an older model Radeon card I was thinking of but clearly you are correct.
 
 The Blackmagic Intensity and Intensity Pro is not a graphic or display car it is a dedicated Video in and Video out card for capturing HDV and also analog to HDV as well as displaying on a Video Monitor as you capture and edit.
 
 It will not be listed under Display and Graphics in the system profile but rather in the PC slot area.
 
 It has no effect on the Open GL mechanism.
 
 I have it installed as I wrote along side of my Nvidia 880 and it work fine with open GL in PS 4 nothing different what so ever.
 
 Although the poster does not state what kind of Blackmagic card?

I have a Mac Pro w/ ATI X1900 XT. I replaced the GeForce 7300 GT that came w/ the pro with this X1900 XT as an upgrade from Apple, purchased after the initial system purchase.
I have a 30" Cinema display and a 20" HP LP2065 LCD (very nice, LG/Philips S-IPS panel, just like the 30" ACD).

I have some odd behavior on the HP secondary screen. I never sleep the Mac Pro, but do sleep its screens. When they wake, the ACD 30 lights up right away. The HP does sometimes - but about half the time it takes 2-5 minutes for it to light. The LED goes amber to green right away, but the screen is black (and unbacklit) for a few mins. Sometimes I see random blue lines across the blackish screen of the HP before it goes normal. Sometimes it lights fine but I see a "stuck" mouse pointer - either arrow or the spinning wheel - on that 2nd screen, but the REAL pointer that's tied to mouse control is on the ACD 30. Only when I move the mouse to push the real pointer to 2nd screen (HP) does the "stuck" pointer disappear.
Not sure if this is a problem w/ the HP or if it's some odd ATI thing. I had a 20" ACD hooked up as a 2ndary, before going to the 20" HP, and it exhibited none of these issues.
I am using the HP rotated, in portrait mode, as the X1900 drivers support this.

Mac Pro (ATI X1900) black screen at boot

Hey there,
I've been seeing some problems with my early Mac Pro when booting. Upon the first boot of the day, the machine sounds like it's starting up however the display remains black for upto 15 minutes before kicking in.
The problem used to happen occasionally but it's just been getting worse over the last 6 months.
It's got to the stage that if you put the machine into sleep mode, then come back 30 minutes later I'll have to wait for another 15 minutes before I can log back in.
If the machine has been running for a while and you perform a regular reboot, you can see the system booting and the login window comes up straight away.
I've tried a fresh install of Leopard on an external drive, problem still exists.
I also tried hooking up another display to the system just to check it wasn't the existing monitor and sure enough the problem remains.
Recently the display has been blanking for a few seconds when I've been using the system.
Searching to forums seems to suggest a whole bunch of issues with the ATI X1900 card, which is installed in this system.
Does anyone think the ATI card is the fault here?
In addition, I know the system is out of its initial years warranty but it seems like the ATI card has some known problems, so what's the likelyhood of Apple helping me out here?

You are chasing down the wrong rabbit hole is my best guess, as bad as the X1900 might be.
Rule out marginal RAM, Seagate drives, 3rd party USB/FW devices, controllers (other than X1900), even modem/router. All it takes is a bad USB or FW (or probably RJ45) cable.
No need to reinstall. Now that you have, clone your system for backup and testing with SuperDuper and run Disk Warrior, too, and try that. Might want to rerun the last combo update. And I always run the combo update from another drive than the system being updated.
SuperDuper forces the newly cloned system to rebuild all the temp files, logs, caches and such that are best done by itself when first booted.
Other things to try are reset the SMC RESET button on pre-2008 Mac Pro (on 2008 model, leave it unplugged overnight, no cables attached to clear or reset the SMC) and then zap NVRAM on cold boot.

Need ATI X1900 internal power cable

Hi all,
A friend gave me an ATI X1900 video card but didn't have the internal power cable for the video card. I have a Nov. 2007 Mac Pro that already has an ATI X1900. I would like to add this "new" ATI X1900 as a secondary video card.
Where can I get the needed power cable? Is there any else I need to watch out for?

High power cards, such as the ATI X199, should be used only in slots 1 or 2. Slots 3 and 4 are for low power cards.

ATI X1900 and Snow Leopard?

I have a Mac Pro with an ATI X1900 Graphics Card with 512MB of memory. Will I get all the Graphics exceleration of Open CL that Snow Leopard offers? Do I need to get an upgrade?

OK to permanetly remove CPU fans for ATI X1900 installation?

I've got a dual core G5. I just got the new ATI X1900 G5 edition. The installation instructions look like it wants me to permanently remove the cpu fans and plug the card's power cord into the cpu fans' power port.
Am I reading the instructions right? Is this a typical thing to do when getting a high-end graphics card? Is it safe to run the mac without the cpu fans?

Those CPU fans need to run, period. You have as close as I can give to a guarantee, let's say 99.99943%, that if that CPU fan does not run, that you will destroy the CPU core within a couple minutes. And that's a very, very expensive repair as warranty will not cover it.
Perhaps there is a "piggyback" on the Radeon's plug which allows you to plug the CPU power fan into it... effectively running 2 fans off the same plug.

I can't imagine that that would be the case... Sure, you'd have great graphics, but you'd also have an overheating computer.
Both the 7800GT and FX4500 cards required a separate power cable as well, and neither of them needed the CPU fans (or any other fans) to be removed.
I don't have a picture of where the cable should plug in, but hopefully someone else will or you'll be able to find it on the motherboard. I'm also assuming that ATi expects you to you that connector.

ATI X1900 XT HDCP Support?

Does the ATI X1900 XT offered with the Mac Pro support HDCP? I've heard reports that some other cards support HDCP chip wise, but not on the card's board making it useless. Anyone know about the X1900?

I could have this totally wrong, but going HD for the full package (watching retail HD software/movies) involves:
1. HD Optical drive
2. HDCP video card with HDMI (containing the copy/drm signal stuff)
3. Displays with same standard HDMI socket.
We currently have none of the above on any mac. So this involves a lot of upgraded video hardware at some point in the future. Looking to be shot-down or politely corrected.
(Would make one monster Macpro 8core config ?)

I noticed that in my 24 inch LCD monitor, the refresh rate at maximum resolution, is only 60 Hz.
It´s possible to install in this machine, an ATI x1900 PCI card, and quit que AGP card that he have?
I noticed that the computer have PCI express slots, but will work with one of this cards?

The issue of fatigue with LCD monitors is often attributed to "response time". This is the time (in milliseconds) that it takes for the screen to update the pixel colors.
In video, a slow response time may cause what is called "ghosting", as the frame rate of the video proceeds faster than the screen can refresh. Any monitor with a response time of less than 16 to 20 milliseconds, though, should not exhibit this problem.
A low contrast ratio may also contribute to fatigue, as graphics and text will not appear as sharp as they could.
It could be that a better graphics card (faster GPU and more VRAM) could help with the presentation of graphics such that fatigue is reduced. Graphics cards do have a "refresh rate", which will be faster in higher powered cards.
The same can be said for a higher quality monitor. New monitors, with higher contrast, brightness, and lower response time could help ease fatigue.
Not to forget, one's eyes may simply be aging, and a pair of glasses may help reduce the fatigue.
Especially with larger monitors with high resolutions (1920x1200 and greater) the small size of text and graphical details can fatigue one's eyes.
Might check with an optometrist............
