ATI x800XT -- how loud is too loud?

I recently upgraded my G5 from a fanless ATI 9600XT to a ATI x800XT.
I was wondering how loud this new card should be?
Upon powering up the G5, I can hear the fans spin up quite loudly compared to before the upgrade. I'm assuming this is the new vid card? I thought for a minute that I installed something incorrectly as it almost sounded like something was vibrating for a few seconds but then the noise smoothed out.
After 10 seconds or so, the fan noise reduces but still can be heard during simple tasks like web surfing. It adds a bit to the overall G5 fan noise that I'm used to but isn't too bad.
So far, I haven't tried any graphics-intensive workout for the new card. How loud will the fan get then? As loud as the full blast fans that I used to get with kernel panics or what?
Thanks for your insight.

Thanks, Samsara.
As you said, I'm probably just not used to one with a fan and wasn't sure what to expect. It is well seated, and so far, the only time I've really heard it is during startup (where I think it comes on full power for a few seconds).
During "regular" use, I can hear it but, overall, it only adds a little to the general fan noise. It doesn't ramp up and down during regular use.
I haven't taxed it yet, but as this card was near-impossible to get, I'll definitely be keeping it.
Thanks for your reassurance, Samsara.

  • My iPhone 4S sound won't work. I can't watch any videos or listen to music directly off my phone. It only plays with plugged into to auxiliary cord. Although, the ringtone and my alarm works, I can't change how loud either is.

I have an iPhone 4S. My ringtone and alarm will work, on occasion my texting alert will too. Although, I can't control how loud I want any of these things anymore. Other than that, my slide to unlock sound does not work, neither does the click sounds when texting. I have checked to make sure these are all on and enabled in settings. My phone will not play music and I cannot hear any videos either unless it is plugged into an auxiliary cord and played through a stereo. I dropped it in the snow once, could this be why? Is this a malfunction? Can I fix it or do I get a new phone because of a defect? Thank you!!

Your phone still thinks it is plugged into the stereo. I don't remember how to solve this but perhaps you can search through the forum or maybe one of the members here will jump in on how to switch the playback to speakers.

  • How loud is the whine on the new 2Ghz MacBook?

I have been seeing alot of posts about people complaing about the whining thier MacBook is making. I was wondering how loud it is, and if its really anything to be concerned about. My old iBook makes some noise, but its not anything that annoys me, and you can't even hear it if there is some other noise in the room (i.e. TV, music, etc.).
Also, people have been talking about mooing, what the heck is that?
    Thanks!

Mine doesn't. When plugged in I get a very very faint buzz from the charging but it's not the CPU whine like the 15" MBPs have and it's about 10x fainter in volume at least. I've gotten very good at hearing the CPU whine and this isn't it (at least on mine).
My black macbook whines too when the AC adapter is
    plugged in

  • How loud should I keep my iPod Touch?

I've heard one can recieve hearing loss listening to anything above 80 dB for a certain length of time. How loud should I keep the volume on my iPod Touch. Also, does anyone know how many dB each volume "block" is worth?

You are close to the mark.  There are similar "standards" extant regarding the wearing of hearing protection.  When I was on active duty in the Navy, I had to wear double hearing protection (ear plugs and ear muffs) on the flight deck (DUH!!!) , in most engineering spaces (engine rooms, fire rooms, catapault machinery rooms, etc.) and during small arms training/qualifications.  Inspite of all of that, after serving for over 21 years I have enough hearing loss to require hearing aids.
The best way to describe what happens is similar to what happens when you walk on your front lawn.  You can do it a few times will little or no apparent damage, but over time you will wear out a path in your yard.   Hearing loss is the same way.
Do your self a favor:  Keep the volume as low as possible and limit the amount of time you listen using ear buds.  If you cannot hear someone talking over your music, the music is too loud.  Also, do not insert ear buds far enough to make a seal.  You may get a "better sound" but the sealing effect traps the air pressure fluctuations in the ear canal, intensifying not only the sound level, but also decreasing the time it takes to cause damage to your hearing.

Finally, the volume graphic is no where close to being a qualitative measure of how many dBs your ear buds are generating.

  • How loud is the whine

Guys I read about the whine and I am wondering how loud is yours? Mine isn't that loud but with the mirrow widget it goes away so I am assuming it is the whine you all are talking about it. Before I call apple and tell them about it I wanted to hear from you all.
    Thanks
    Thom

Mine is a shriek, not a whine.
As in, Warcraft in the background, movie front and center, I could still hear the MacBook Pro shrieking. Sometimes. Other times it was quieter, but still loud enough to hear over my dog barking/growling. He's sort of got a Barry White voice. . .you know, for a dog.
But, please do call Apple. It's pretty easy, in my experience, to tell the difference between "the whine" and a normal computer hum or murmur. My Dell makes a very easy-to-ignore soft whine/whir while running. The Apple, I was afraid, was possessed. The techs will have an easier time figuring out what's going on when they know which machines are broken. The more people who call with actual issues, the better.

  • How loud is the sound in DeciBel?

well... I only want to know how loud the sound, on my iPod is. The absolut highest level on it, is that 100 deciBel or more (or less)?
    Simone (Denmark)

The iPods sold in Europe have a limit of 100dB, in accordance with EN 50332-1, - Sound system equipment: Headphones and earphones associated with portable audio equipment. Maximum sound pressure level measurement methodology and limit considerations. Part 1: General method for "one package equipment""
But it's not quite that simple.
The specific headphones and their efficiency will play a large part in the actual volume level.

  • How loud is the Mac Pro under heavy load?

    Greetings to all.
I've got a Quad that currently likes to rev up it's fans when I'm doing 4 core calculations (rendering). It gets loud enough that it usually drones out anything not in my immediate area of my desk in my office. Just slightly quieter then the noise it throws off when you run Apple Hardware Test (which has no thermal management, so everything runs at full blast).
I'm fine with a loud computer, the Quad's still quieter then some of my PC's. But I would like to know- everyone is clamering about the Mac Pro's being quieter then the Quad.
Is this under load, or just idling?
Are the Mac Pro's as loud as the Quad when loaded down?
    -S'Captain

I have a dual 2.0 GHz Rev. A G5 and now am using a MP 3.0 GHz. The G5 is louder at idle than the MP is at full throttle. I decided to see how loud it would get but maxing out all 4 cores overnight. I came into the room the next day and was bummed it had crashed because it sounded like it had shut off but I moved the mouse and to my delight the thing was still churning away at 400%. It is very very quiet and I have slowly gotten used to the fact that it is nearly impossible to tell if it is asleep or awake. The G5's seem to have a very large delta with regard to fan noise, not so bad at idle and kinda loud when fully loaded. The MP's seem to go from nearly silent to barely audible.
Someone mentioned above that the machine has only passive heat-sinks on the CPUs which is true but misleading because each heat-sink has a dedicated fan right in-front of it in the case. So far I have added 4x1GB of non-Apple thermal spec RAM, i.e. no heat-sinks - just spreaders, and the fans have not spun any louder. Two of the sticks are Kingston and two are Crucials which were the wrong types due to an error by them and didn't have the Apple-style sinks on em. The Kingstons have run reliably for over a week with me stressing them almost every night and I have encountered a lone ECC error which was corrected. I think in cooler environments you may be OK with regular FB-DIMMS but in a hotter environment you may have issues, I keep it pretty cool where the MP lives.

  • How 'loud' should a bounced Mp3 file be ?

Hi- is there a recommended overall 'loudness' when you bounce a Logic file to MP3 with the aim of it being listened to from a website ?
When I import a CD (not talking about my own music) into i-Tunes I've noticed that I don't usually have to alter my speaker loudness settings much when I listen.
As iTunes can play through all the music from several CD's for hours and the loudness from many different CD's matches, this suggets to me that there is some universal setting that needs to be applied before bouncing to MP3.
I'd love some help on this aspect. Thanks a lot, Kay.

    This is called "Mastering".
People who do it well, get paid upwards of 300 USD per hour to do it.
There is not hard and fast rule about how loud to make a song.
Also, iTunes has a volume limiter, which attempt to make different level songs the same level. it is a lame attempt at leveling, and you should try to turn it off, in the preferences pane of iTunes.
As far as an mp3 for internet broadcast, there is no specific set of specifications for this. You should simply look at what is on the website you are going to submit to, and try to get close to that, or better yet, do not worry about this, asn ensure your music is as good as it can be TO YOU.
I read so many posts about artists wanting to be like someone else's sound, or loudness, or whatever, that I seriously have to put the question forward :
Do you care about what YOUR sound is? Or do you want to sound like everyone else?
    Cheers

  • Am I being a spaz? How hot is too hot?

I was doing some google searches, and I've just come up with statistics, not whether or not the temperatures were too hot, or if it was normal.
From what I've read, the iMac can idle safely at ~50C, [122F], and when gaming, it can go into the upper 80C's [176F].
I've been using smcFanControl with like, 5 different settings, and my normal response would be, turn up the fans if it gets
above 110F [43C]  and if it gets to 120F [49C] or above, I switch the fans to max until it lowers to around 100F [37C].
It may just be me, but am I being overly cautious about temperatures? I'd rather the fans need to be replaced than the hardware,
and also, I've read that it will definitely just shut itself off if it gets "too hot", but about how hot is 'too hot', and will this work
    if I'm booted in Windows?
Just for reference, the ambient air should be somewhere in between 70-80F [20-27C].
    Mid 2010 iMac, 21.5"
    3.2GHz Intel i3
    4GB RAM
    ATI Radeon 5670 [512MB]

Hmm. Alright, I may end up uninstalling it and resetting the SMC/PRAM later, and just use it normally. I usually don't mind the fans being a bit noisier, if it'll keep the system cool, since I have an external tower speaker I use, which I love when gaming...

  • How Much is Too Much?

    Hi everyone,
I have recently been using my macpro more and more for high-def video work. I usually leave it on 24 hours a day as at night I set up a batch of files in compressor to run over night. Essentially, all my CPUs are maxed almost all the time. I am wondering if this could become a problem? I have read a little about average loads but don't fully understand what they mean. Mine are: 8.60, 7.58 and 7.42 and I am getting pretty high temps on my CPUs, power supplies and hard drives (about 44C, 54C and 39C average respectively). Am I pushing this thing too hard? How much is too much? Please see my system specs below.
    Thanks a lot!
    ~ Philip

Don't let the drives get to 70C! they can take 50C safely. Memory and graphics are more of a concern. The cpu will protect itself.
smcFanControl can insure that your fans stay above the default minimums, which is worth taking a look at (freeware).
Fluctuation in temps between extremes can stress a hard drive and memory.

  • How much is too many?

    Have an iPad 16gb.
Curious - At what point and how many Apps does it take for the device to be affected and slow down?

    Ask 300 people, get 300 answers .....
I rarely have more than 4 or 5 apps in my recents tray at any one time. But you can bet your bottom dollar that my browser - and it doesn't matter which of the five that I have I am using at the time - will crash on me every day - day after day - 3 or 4 times a day. I seem to have particularly bad luck with the iPad internet experience. When I use the Mercury browser - and it has done this since day one - I constantly get the low memory warning - even if I have closed all apps and have just restarted the iPad.
That's kind of a bummer for me because my iPad has become more of an mobile internet toy and email reader than a work machine. That's OK - I had no problem spending the money and taking the chance to see what I would get out of it because I wasn't quite sure what I would be using it for but I knew I really wanted one.
There really is a point to this and it is that no one has any way of knowing for certain how many is too many. As I have told you - I can run one solitary app and crash with great frequency. It's just something that only you can find out on your own as you continue to use the device.

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • Pixel corruption with ATI X800XT Mac edition

To allow running a 30 inch Cinema display, I installed an ATI X800XT AGP card in my Powermac G5 (3.5 GB RAM). After working well for a few days without excessive fan noise, it developed pixel corruption; whether in the post screen or after booting the OS. I replaced the card with another; this time it worked for two weeks before developing the same problem. Any solution?

In case anyone who's in the dark about this problem (I had as well), this is what I've found in ATI's web site:
    http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=30606
In spite of the lack of details as to what the problem is, is irrelevant. Unless your super-tech savvy and can solve the problem yourself, don't waist time asking them to fix the card. Tell them to replace it PERIOD (if ATI has any in-stock).
I bought my card from www.macsales.com and didn't send it to ATI because of all the rumors I heard about ATI's lousy costumer service (MAC people get the bad end of it). Long story short I was LUCKY to discover at the time, that they had an "open box" *+NVIDIA 6800 ULTRA+* for sale. After sending them a copy of ATI's report and sending a picture of my display, they sent me the card and only paid the difference in price.
If I were you, I would send it back to whomever you bought the card from, and let them deal with it on your behalf (depending on their sales policies) or get your money back. I do that with most products I buy.
