Atlas-lapack discussion

I'm the maintainer of the atlas-lapack package in AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16575. I've adopted it following a request of the previous maintainer.
I'd like to do some changes to the package, but before uploading a new PKGBUILD I'd like to discuss the changes I've in mind with the those interested.
Here is the list of changes:
1) Only shared build: currently the PKGBUILD compiles ATLAS sources two times, one for static libraries and one for shared libraries, where the -fPIC option is passed to the compiler. In order to speed up the compilation I would like to remove the static build. Static libraries (*.a) will be still available, but the code is compiled with -fPIC.
2) Remove unneeded libraries: currently the compiled package contains multi-threaded (libptf77blas, libptcblas) and single-threaded (libf77blas, libcblas) libraries. I suggest that on single processor machines the multi-threaded libraries are removed, and on multi processor machines the single-threaded libraries are removed and the multi-threaded libraries are renamed like the corresponding single-threaded ones, i.e.
libptf77blas  =>  libf77blas, libptcblas  =>  libcblas
Also libblas.so will point to libf77blas.
3) Remove static libraries: I'm not sure about this last point. I think it doesn't make sense to make a static link with atlas. Moving a statically linked binary to another CPU-architecture will almost surely results in failure, i.e. the binary won't work.
Here is the new source package I've made http://aur.pastebin.com/pB5Y3eyJ
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Hi Giuseppe.
I report here some ideas about your suggestions.
For point 1, if you build static libraries with option -fPIC, there are problems in link phase (look at comment of darenw on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 on atlas-lapack AUR page).
For point 3, build process of some applications requires static libraries: it's possible to modify build scripts to avoid this problem, but it's not so easy, also because of other linking problem that can occur. Comment of darenw is again an example of this type of problem.
For point 2, usually I prefer respecting original name conventions, to avoid problems with applications that require multithreaded support. However for ATLAS I don't think that your suggestion should cause many troubles.
PS: Thanks again for having adopted atlas-lapack!

• [SOLVED] Trouble with atlas-lapack static library linking to our .so

I'm trying to compile a massive hunk of software, one small piece of which is libgraphics.so. The build system, based on cmake, is trying to link a static library from lapack to make the libgraphics.so but failing with this:
Linking CXX shared library libgraphics.so
/usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/liblapack.a(dgetrf.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.rodata' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/local/lib/liblapack.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [graphics/libgraphics.so.3.1.0] Error 1
Thinking lapack.a somehow wasn't built right, after some fussing I ended up removing the blas, lapack, and atlas libraries and reinstalling them from the AUR atlas-lapack (ver 3.8.3) package. This is where they had come from originally just a few months ago, when I first tried to compile this massive app. Maybe now something in atlas-lapack got fixed? No. Apparently it builds static libraries without -fPIC, or something else is going on to result in this error. I didn't see anything obvious in the PKGBUILD file to change.
Now I'm stuck, out of further ideas to try...

Problem solved. CMake was finding a stray old .a file (w/o any .so files with it) in /usr/local/lib while the good new .a and .so files were in /usr/lib. Deleted the old .a, reran cmake. Now make runs fine. -fPIC had nothing to do with the solution.

• To the person who runs this Discussion

I have been unable to find a contact to send you a message.
On the page of this discussion that lists the headers of all the topics, at the bottom after the last topic on the page, a link is offered named "More". On clicking this, a second page appears (and then later pages), continuing the list of topics. When I select a topic on the second (or third) page and reply to it, I am automatically returned to the first page. I than have to scroll down to the bottom, press the More link again, and hunt for the last topic that I read. If I were on, say, the third page, I have to scroll down twice and press More twice, and so on. Each page is re-downloaded for obvious reasons (given the large amount of traffic on this discussion.) By the time that I reach the third page, it is quite a hunt to find the last topic that I visited so that I can continue to browse. This is inelegant and wastes time.
In the iMac (Intel) discussion, (also heavily trafficked) the other method of accessing later pages is used. That is, by a button marked Next. Having pressed that, I stay on that second page (or third page) and am returned to it, and do not have the fuss of repeatedly pressing More.
I have looked at "Your Stuff" but there seems no relevant preference. Therefore, how can I select the second method for all topics.
Thanks.

Is it caused by using different tabs to get to the topics?
First option (Overview tab):
has this at the bottom:
I'm guessing that it the 'More' you are referring to?
Second option (Discussions tab):
has this at the bottom:
I've used the Set as default tab option for the Discussions tab for this Forum.

Hi Ged
• Upgrade your computer to ‘N’ standard wireless hardware. If needed, buy a suitable N wireless adaptor from BT atwww.bt.com/nwireless
• Keep your computer streamlined eg. by running our ‘PC Healthcheck’ app (part of BT’s Desktop Help software atwww.bt.com/desktophelp)
• Reserve wireless for mobile devices, use Ethernet for main computer
• Consider powerline adaptors for longer ranges

7:12
Martin S.:
i Neil. When Openreach enables an exchange for fibre, all internet service providers are able to use that service equally - so other ISPs should be able to offer their fibre products at the same time as BT Retail's Infinity product

I've recently upgraded to Infinity 2. The ethernet connection is fine, but the wifi is constantly dropping. I have an old Homehub 2 , which we had for total broadband, will it work, so I can test the wifi.

Neil - also its worth remembering that when an exchange is enabled for fibre, this does not automatically mean that all cabinets and lines connected to that exchange are also enabled, which might explain if your exchange has been enabled but your line is not appearing as eligible yet

Whats the upgrade path from fttc to fttp does it mean a new contract or can we just expect it to migrate?

Hi Helen, your wireless should work ok on your Hub 2, though our more recent Hub 3 is better. If you're expereincing drop outs, it's usually a sign of radio interference. Have you any powerline adaptors you could use instead?

Thanks Martin - Workmen recently dug up the path outside my driveway to install FTTC so I know it's there My exchange goes live on 30th June - I can't wait!I have another question: I'm in the process of consolidating my TV, Telephone and Broadband into one bundle. The "BT Vision Unlimited" looks ideal.
7:19
Comment From Paul
Is there a estimated date that fast path will be available ?
7:19
Martin S.
Hi Kevin - Due to the structure of how fibre has been deployed, your line will either be FTTC or FTTP; there is no way to change your technology type. If you mean 'how do you move to the faster 80mb product (on FTTC)?', this can be done using the links on BT.com

Regarding the Infinity installation, is it mandatory for the BT O/R Engineerer to have access to your PC?
7:22
Martin S.
Hi Chris - It is not mandatory, but we recommend allowing the engineer to show you on your own equipment your fantastic new speeds!

hi, im trying to setup port forwarding to my old draytek, as it has more powerful wirelelss capabaility then the bt homehub, is it possible
7:23
KerryG
Hi Simon - that sounds like a great question for the forum boards, the Draytek is not a BT product so we can go into detail here in this chat, but there will be lots of people who i'm sure can help in the forum.
7:24
Charles
Evening Kevin, for BT Infinity is based on thecurrent FTTC product offered by BT Openreach, which comprises the VDSL modem provided by Openreach and the Home Hub 3 provided by Retail. If/when Openreach move to supporting a single box solution, then we would look to moving to that. Openreach will shortly be trialling this.
7:24
Comment From Helen
I've already checked there's nothing interfering with the Hub.
7:24
Comment From Helen
I don't have a Hub3, both the one that is currently connected, and the old one I have in the box are Hub 2.
7:25
Comment From Chris
Yes, going from 3mb to an estimated 50mb+ is quite the upgrade, I would even be happy if it was merely a 10MB upgrade. - If I remember correctly FTTC is around(if not the same) price as standard broadband these days.
7:26
Charles
Helen - could you post your issue in the Bt Infinity forum and one of our mods will look into this for you.
7:26
Comment From Kevin
My install is planned for the 28th May my question is i have my master socket downstairs directly below the room i want my fttc modem installed is it possible to have the modem upstairs with the extension cable ?
7:27
Comment From Mike B
I have an istalation question. I understand that the modem for Infinity needs to be sited close to the BT phone socket. Am I right in thinking that the modem is then connected via a Cat 5/6 cable to the wireless router situated elsewhere in the house? Does this impact on the speed?
7:27
Comment From Helen
Ok charles, I will do..

Comment From Neil Potter
On the subject of Powerline Adaptors (PA's) - I have a unique setup here at home whereby I would need to utilise 4 x PA's. Are there any known performance issues sharing data, experiencing latency or dropped packets from Desktop PC's all connected via PA's at the same time?
7:28
Martin S.
Kevin / Mike B: The engineer can use an extension cable up to 30m long to help position your equipment where you want it - this should not affect your speed.
7:29
Comment From Eric Simpson
I have bt broadband .. I am currently getting 3M download. I have two "estimates" from the BT site. One says I should get between 10-17 ... the other which does some sort of check/diagnostic (and appears to be the real thing) says I should get between 1-4. We are meant to get Infinity next month. How would that impact me?
7:31
Charles
Hi neil - good question. I've found from experience that powerline performance is very much dependent on the adaptor manufacturer and your home environment, specifically how 'clean' your electrical spectrun is. All I can say is give it a try. That said, i would always recommend an Ethernet connection for the fastest and most stable speeds.
7:31
Martin S.
Hi Eric. You can find your predicted BT Infinity speed (if it is available on your line) at bt.com/infinity and entering your number into the availability checker

hi, really I'm just asking a tech question - can the bt home hub port forward?

Comment From Eric Simpson
Does my question pop up only when it comes up the queue?
7:33

Hi simon - I'm assuming you're talking about the Hub 3 (our latest Hub). Yes, it does support port forwarding. You can set this up via the configuration menu in your Hub. See instructions in your Hub user guide for how to do this.

HI guilbo - I'm not aware of any technical issues for Vision customer regrading to Infinity. We have hundreds of orders go through each week. If the problem persists, I would suggest customers contact the Infinity helpdesk.
7:38
Comment From Neil Potter
Thanks for your reply Charles - If I could ask, the PA's you supply with the current BT Vision boxes are manufactured by Simpler Networks - would I need to purchase identical PA's from the same manufacturer for extending my network? Will BT Retail sell me these as an additional extra? This will be my last question - I feel I have been fortunate to have two answered already
7:39
Martin S.
Hi Chris - The speeds estimated in the checker are a very good indication of actual speeds, but we can only know the exact speed once installed.
7:39
Comment From Eric Simpson
it says not available yet. I am just frustrated because I get faster speed from my little Android phone using it as a hotspot. If there is a bottleneck somewhere in the system, would fibre really make a difference
7:41
Comment From Kevin
I have been given the estimate of 59.4Mb download 20.0Mb upload will this be accurate?
7:42
Charles
Hi neil - yes you should always stick to the same model for all your PA's. I am pretty sure that additional Vision PA's can be bought from the BT Shop, and these should be fine. I have had 70mbps out of mine! seewww.bt.com/shop
7:43
Martin S.
Eric - Generally fibre can make a very significant difference to overall speeds, though individual increases can't be guaranteed. If / when it becomes available on your line, the checker will tell you how much of a difference it could make to you.
7:43
Comment From Chris
I'm assuming it's based on the length of copper from my house to the Green Cab. - The exchange is 2miles~ away from me and the said Cab. Will this also effect my speed?
7:45
Charles
Hi Kevin - our estinmates are as accurate as we can make them, but your actual speed will depend on your underlying phone line speed. We will only know your true speed once Infinity is live - it will then train to your optimal line speed, which should be approx as shown by your prediction.
7:45
KerryG
Glad to see you all keeping Charles and Martin busy here... keep the questions coming in, we're in the last 15 mins now...
7:45
Martin S.
Chris - Yes, your speed is primarily affected by the total amount of copper between you and the exchange. With FTTC fibre products, the old copper between the exchange and the cabinet is replaced by fibre, meaning less copper overall and faster speeds.

Hi Lewis - DLM will apply interleaving only if it detects an ustable line. It will not apply interleaving unless it is warranted.
7:47
Comment From Kevin
I guess when i get my infinity installed a lot of sites and links will still be on dsl or adsl+ or even slower and the speed my end wont improve the speed there end ie my speed will depend on the site i visit and there upload speed for my download speed?

Comment From Dom
I am moving to BT infinity, but I had to order my line and then wait for it to be activated before ordering infinity. Is this a technical issue or a process at BT issue?
7:49
Charles
Evening Dom. It's a process issue - we can only provide Infinity once a Retail line is up and running.

Hi Kevin - yes, some websites that you visit may not be able to keep up with your superfast speeds! We aim to give you the best speeds at your end, but sadly there may sometimes be bottlenecks in the wider internet.
7:51

Apologies in advance for my ignorance. If Infinity is installed does the 'phone continue to use copper all the way to the exchange or does this also go over fibre?
7:54
Charles
Hi lewis - the most common cause is interference on your phone line, in which case DLM will moderate your BB speed until the line stablises. There'smore lot of info on this at the Infinity FAQs on BT.com
7:54
Martin S.
Hi Guilbo - good question - yes, the phone still uses the copper.

• The xfce-4.4 themes contest discussion

As stated on http://blog.archlinux.org I posted the files for the contest on my server: http://arch.justdreams.net/xfce44-themings.tar.gz
I recommend to either fetch shadowhands xfce4-svn packages or the set I offer here http://arch.justdreams.net/xfce4-pkgs/
I use it already for daily use and didn't encounter serious problems.
The things you should consider if you like to add an entry.
· a usable, nice WM theme not too small and not too large, fitting for users from laptop sized screens to dual widescreen setups.
· a background image, that doesn't steal focus from work (read: no strong contrast, everything in like colors, makes it possible to use (semi)-transparent terminals, scales well over several desktop sizes, also fits on non 4:3 screens)
· a nice gtk-theme using gtk-xfce-engine (read: come with corporate colors, don't waste space but have usable handles) gtk-xfce-engine stays part of 4.4 (there were discussions to ditch the gtk-xfce-engine in favor of gtk's new standard engine clearlooks)
· a nice splashscreen theme (no real reglementations apart from colors)
for xfwm4 themes you wanna read http://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/
Xfwm-4.4 has some new features:
- you can use svg instead of png files (check: http://foo-projects.org/pipermail/xfce4 … 21447.html for some details)
- you can replace the menu button by adding "show_app_icon=true" in themerc
The files you find in my tarball reflect the way I was working:
- create the design
- split design into the shape parts (provided by the xpm picturesthat can actually pick up gtk colours) and the shade parts(transparent pictures on top of xpms either png or svg)
- build the actual buttons (shape, colour etc)
- I exported the xpm from gimp and used a whole bunch of sed lines to flip colours to get the pressed and -active state (se the shell script in te directory for details)
The background image isn't tricky.
I added my gtkrc file in the tarball. It was mainly created from studying other gtkrc files since I didn't find some serious documentation on it.
The splashscreen is pretty much straight forward. I added a .blend file for a rendered Arch symbol. You don't have to use it. The old theme used the balou engine - you can use any other or write your own. Doesn't matter.
XFCE-4.4 is at rc1 at the moment. I think it's gonna take another month b4 it hits the final. After that we will have a poll at the forum to figure which theme the users like best.

Yeah thanks! I think you can redraw buttons in rezlooks and use my function with CL_CORNER_NONE to get better look with squared theme.
Anyway what have you *stealed* from my works? yes i like that someone appreciate my works but it's always not fun thinking you've worked for days and someone *copy* your code. I hope this *steals* are originals since that could be an improvement not a simple copy! My engines are based on rezlooks/clearlooks but i've done a lot of original work for them!
"God bless opensource" as you said, I totally agree, expecially it the ways it comes with original things and not copies!
Hehehe, by "stealing", I only mean stuff like using that function to draw rectangles instead of just cairo_rectangle, stuff that you suggested anyway... most of the original stuff you do for Murrine would be wrong for Rezlooks anyway.
Yeah, I'll chat to you on IRC sometime soon, we can discuss some things. I've been very busy with real life recently, haven't had a chance to do any work on Rezlooks for a while, I am still planning on releasing 0.7 at some point though... And yeah, that collaborative engine we talked about will be awesome
Ok I just want to focus that murrine_rounded_rectangle has to be rewrite for with the next release of cairo (1.4.0) that will be released the next month will have a great performance improvement where lines are drawn aligned. In the current cairo version there's a bug in cairo_stroke which is twice slow than cairo_fill, so unless you fill the stroke of unaligned lines appears slow as aligned ones.
With next cairo release the "stroke bug" will be fixed and we'll have to rewrite function to get the new performance boost.
I had found occasionaly this bug yesterday when i was stripping down murrine toghether with benzea and thos, gnome developers.
If you see in the gnome cvs you'll find new fixing in a lot of engines that get twice as fast by implementing cairo_fill instead of cairo_stroke, waiting new cairo release for reverting it back...

• My introduction and a hardware discussion.

Hello Adobe forums.
Its nice to meet you all. This is going to be a heavy first post, hopefully it will bloom into a great discussion.
I have been reading and learning and just wracking my brain around all the great info here for building a NLE system.
For starters let me introduce my self, I am Erik, and I have been a long ago user of Premier. In fact I was in undergrad when i made my first cut and ripple delete. that was 1999 and I think there wasnt even premier pro, my memory recalls premier 7 or something, then a year into college it changed to PP. I might have that all mixed up too.
So anywho, cut on adobe all thru undergrad and then went to grad school and learned the Avid system. I have no hang ups about either system, in my experience a cut is a cut and a dissolve is a dissolve no matter what system makes it.
I am now released from grad school and am out on my own again, in my life I will never be able to afford an avid system like our school had, with a nitrous, composers in the big lab and a huge audio booth with avid something for multi track mastering. I want to touch back to my roots there for I have chosen to return to adobe, in the flavor of production premium.
I am excited to see what's different and also about being able to work with out rendering, I remember the days when in order to see anything i had to first render, make a tiny change then render again, you all know this cycle too well i am sure.
I am a simple one thing at a time guy, independent, I dont unless specifically asked edit for clients. I write my shorts and full lengths, shoot them, edit them and play on the festival circuit.
So that is my intention for my NLE system.
I will say I am exceedingly happy with a lot of the info on this forum. In school sadly we are only taught the artisan side of editing and those areas, the digital science end is left to our own exploration. since starting my research I went from the basic concept of data rate of the camera and how big a memory card I need, to the more important how fast the memory card can write. Also applying this knowledge to the concepts in the computer for the NLE, so a big thanks to the guys I see adding valuable info such as, Harm, ADK boys, Videoguys and other members with great input. Thank to you all.
After all that lets talk about the prospected build.
CPU: 3960, socket 2011. I was satisfied with a lga 1155 but you all convinced me i can have a longer living machine with room for improvements over the next few years.
MBO: ASUS X79 sabertooth.
Ram: Gskill ripjaws Z 1600 64gig pack.
GPU: asus gtx 680 4gb ddr5
ASUS dvd bruner/ drive sata
Cooler Master 1200w silent pro gold
Case: Cooler Master haf 932 advanced
Cooling: Cooler Master Seidon Liquid cooler. I wanted air cooling but in order to allow room for the ram this was the best solution.
SSD1: OS and programs, Intel 335 series 240gb, I know many will say thats larger than i need, but it works for me.
SSD2: Render and export, Intel 335 series 240gb
Hdd1: Projects, 1tb wd black caviar 7200rpm sata 3.0 32mb cache
hdd2: Cache "same as above"
hdd3: Media"ditto"
Now as I explore the MB more and more I have learned that there is an extra 2 sata 6 on the MB. AS learned from Harm in another post those 2 extra satas are on the maverick which shares with the gpu, however this MB does not suffer a performance loss of the gpu if i was to use those two slots for later drive expansion. Again for later when money allows.
Now lets discuss my personal work flow.
I shoot nikon d800, with a Pix 220 external recorder. I use DNxHD codec at 220Mbs @8 bitdepth.
My editing style is one thing at a time. I am a simple man, when i cut, i cut. I don't have the multitasking ability to cut one project while doing effects in AE and render in the background. Just too much for me to do at once.
I am a patient man, and like i said above I dont have clients so when I render/export I usually just walk away or go eat/sleep whatever. My time is my own so my deadlines are for festival entries. Of course I want as quick as possible, who would turn down speed?
Going back to one thing at a time, this is where i became strange from my fellow students, when I am finished with a project I am done. I dont go back and tweak like many of my former colleagues. When I make the export, bar any major problems, the video file is placed on a back up external hdd and a disc, then the work computer is formatted and ready for the next project.
Me thinks that covers all aspects of my workflow, if there is anything more specific you need to know please ask.
My questions for discussion.
first and foremost, look over the parts and please point out any things you see as funky, missing or things that will have issues that you learned from your experience.
I know you will all suggest a raid0 some where. For this point in time I would like to stick to single drives with single tasks to keep them from reading and writing at the same time or at least to a minimum. I like to have stability of my data, but I also understand that perhaps there is a speed requirement for my codec to play back smoothly. So if I must, I am open to raid0 in the future when i can afford a stable backup of all the stuff.
Leading to my next question. Of a few posts out there in adobe forums, the general idea is a hdd can playback pretty heavy duty video if the hdd is purposed for video only. I am using 220Mbs would the WD CB be able to handle that if dedicated?
please look at the intended use for my drives, I am only copying what i have seen as advice on the forums, but would like some input as to the how and why you would make one drive as the cache, media and projects drives. any other suggestions for what would be a better use of single drives?
i need your help to educate me in some things i couldn't find on my own. Several times i see members talk about streams, is a stream meaning playing the timeline in multiple monitors? or is it also refering to multiple video tracks. video 1,2,3,4, playing at once?
Are filters considered streams? since i shoot dslr i have to automatically use 3 filters off the bat, rolling shutter remove, color, and a touch of sharpness. sorry for the basic info like i said i was taught the artisan side of editing first.
I am very used to taking my footage from the camera storing it, then importing and transcoding in the Avid to a low low bit rate to make the editing smooooth. A bit rate of 36Mb or so, then after picture lock, connecting with my orginal media for the color correction post effects and export.
since it has been sooo long and I have learned so much, I would assume that PP allows for this type of online off line editing style, does it?
Personally I would rather not have to transcode and edit natively, which as I can see, is what adobe is selling since cs5
I think thats a great place to stop. You guys dont need to write me a text book for an answer, like i did above, please point to links and I will read. If you fingers really want to type away and I will read it too.
Thank You all for your time and input.
ESR

Well, I don't like to make a thread and then just leave it unfinished.
The beast is built, runs cool, looks cool and in my experience is blazing fast even at stock speeds.
I have not begun to overclock yet as I dont fully understand how and I am researching the how tos and theory behind it. I dont want to go changing voltages and cook everything. Ill get there though, one day.
No major build issues, in factthis is the first machine I have built in 13 years, and back then usb 2.0 just came out and the standard device connect was IDE ribbon, plus a 200gb hard drive was THEE monster, for the public that is.
For those of you out there looking at this forum and nervous about assembling your first PC, I say to you, do you research, take you time and make sure all parts will work in balance with your intended use and then assemble.
Other than childbirth, the simultaneous feelings of terror and excitement are something you must experience, its the ultimate high.
I have waded thru some issues and a learning curve in the UEFI bios these days. Like I said above, last time i built a computer there was no bios, I used to have to put the jumpers in the right place. I kinda miss that, but dont get me wrong, on screen bios, woof, i love it.
I would like to discuss some things with you guys as there are some oddities I want to root out.
First, I noticed that running asus utilities, such as, gpu tweak, ai suite ii, conflicts with adobe software.
How? it slows it down a bit here and there, and it seems to cause some crash, force quit not bsod, when closing adobe programs. what happens and how i know a crash is coming is when closing PR, the second monitor will stay full screen on the last image and not move. If i dont hit the windows button or alt tab to another program it will sit there for hours, after the tab or windows key then windows says it stopped responding and to force it to close.
any one else having similar issues? or any recommendations as to some setting in windows/bios/adobe that i may have over looked.
This only happens to me when i have ai suite and gpu tweak open. all other times with out those programs running adobe is smooth as glass.
the other weird thing I have noticed on several forums is the Asus utilities programs are buggy. I was experiencing incredibly loooong lag after boot up when having the ai suite ii on the active services list. it was strange, boot into windows was fine but it seems like the suite either has in incredible amount of files to open or it just conflicts with windows.
here is the exact scenario, windows welcomes you with the sound, you wait a second to react, no hour glass, open the win tab and select either computer, or resource manager, when your me and trying to see what is making the system work so hard and long, the tab sits there for 1min doing nothing, then drops a bit leaving the graphic glitches and sits there longer. finally your window pops up and then everything is hunkey dorey till your next restart.
after disabling anything asus in the services tab i have not had this issue for a week now.
do you guys with asus MBO use their software? or do you guys just skip it all together? and have you experienced these bugs?
one thing about this long lag issue that looms in the back of my mind (even with it hopefully solved) is i never had this type of lag while on the OS ssd. After I plugged in the other 6 drives the next boot was absolutely awful. It took me 30mins to format each one, due to i couldn't control the mouse for more than second and then it would register my movement and shoot me across the screen so i had to baby step it back to the drive format window.
After getting all the hdds formatted it made the lag intermittent like stated above.
all drivers are current, ssds are on latest firmware. I had a fight with the marvell though, it would always register my two drives on it as unpluggable devices and i could actually click safely remove them and the would disappear. but after reading and researching i got it all setup right. I mention this because it bothers me in the back of my mind even though the issue appears to be solved from the drive end and the asus software end.
share with me if any of you have had this type of experience on your build and what you did to overcome it incase i missed a step in bios or in windows setup.
to clarify further:
I run ahci mode on intel and marvell. not a raid man.
the ports are filled as such.
intel sata 6 has my os/programs ssd and the render/export ssd.
the asus dvd burner is on a intel sata 3
the other 3 intels are just wd black hdd
the marvel has 2 additional wd hdd.
like i said the massive lag cam after i plugged all that in, formatting made it intermittent and removing asus software seems to have solved it. just looking for experiences and any missed steps.
second wierd thing is, and perhaps this is why you guys call it QUIRKtime. I can not export dnxhd quiktime format to my render/export drive. It is a intel 335 ssd with latest firmware, (sorry Harm, the specs were great and the price was too) i have all permissions on the drive, but every time i try to export to it in that format i get the export faild can not create source file. All other formats work with out a hitch, just dnxhd quicktime at any resolution.
and lastly, i must be an idiot but i cant seem to get PR to render my audio effects, or that there just not big enough to place them on the drive. its odd, PR is set to have audio previews on its own HDD, and PR creates the folder for renders/previews but never puts anything into them.
Also when i click render audio, its instant playback, faster than i can hit home and l. I have tried to make the files complex with many many filters and effects on audio but no dice.
exported time lines, and sending projects to SG, AE, audition everything works just fine, but its like i will fill up my audio previews HDD with nothing but empty folders. anyone had this issue before? I have settings set to render audio at the same time as video.
those are the only bugs as of now to report. this sytem like i said at stock speed is blindingly fast for me and my work flow, I see a loooong life for this computer.
thank you for reading and thank you all for your input on my little issues, it will save my hair.
Erik.

• "One or more field types are not installed properly" when I try to add a second discussion board web part to a page

I have a SharePoint 2010 site with two discussion boards. I added one additional field to each of the boards: a lookup to another list to link the discussions to individual projects. I need 2 different boards because they have different posting permissions
(one is open to all for comments, and one is open only to the project team to post but everyone can read).
When I go to the pages for each of the discussion boards, they work fine.
But I'm putting together a page for individual projects, and want to have web parts for both discussion boards on the same page, showing the discussions related to the selected project.
I am able to add one of the discussion boards to a web part in the page, but when I add the second discussion board to the page, the new web part contains:
One or more field types are not installed properly. Go to the list settings page to delete these fields.
Correlation ID: blah blah blah
I've searched for similar postings, but mostly I see this error message related to migration from 2007 to 2010 -- this is not the case here: I created both discussion boards, and the whole site, in SP 2010. I've also found this message related
to coding errors using SPQuery. I am not doing any coding here, just using the built-in SharePoint 2010 Edit Page -> add a web part -> select the discussion list. I tried doing it from SPD with the same result.

I figured it out. I was using ?FilterField1=fieldname&FilterValue1=value on the URL to the page to pick out one project number. The web part I was trying to add was for a list that did not have that particular fieldname. I didn't realize that would matter
since I was using the Connections -> Get Filter Values From to get my filter values from the main web part, which does have that fieldname.
I added a field with that fieldname to the other list and set a workflow to copy the lookup value of the project number lookup field into the new field. Now all is working fine. Sorry for the wild geese in my original question.

• Changing Header and Footer in Discussion Channel

Hello,
I need to change the header and footer graphics and links for the page that displays when you search for Discussion Channel topics and displaying Ciscussion Channel posts. I have been looking in the DiscussionProvider directory and I am now looking through the SearchProvider directory. Does anybody have an idea of the locations of the Header and Footer files?

I am sure someone in this forum has had the desire to change the headers from the default of SUN ONE Portal Server and has accomplished this throughout their implementation. Please help! I have succeeded in some containers like the JSPEditContainer so when someone edits bookmarks from a BookmarkProvider channel they see a header that I define, but not in the SearchProvider nor the DiscussionProvider directories. I have seen no mention or <include header.jsp> tags in the jsp files for either of these providers, and I have copied header.jsp and menubar.jsp to both of those directories but it is not picking up the files. Do these containers find the header and menubar.jsp file contents from another location?

• I can't find "Define" option in iOS 6.1.4 in iPhone 5. Tried all discussed tricks, all in vein. Please help!!!

I cannot find that "Define" option in my brand new iPhone 5, after updating to iOS 6.1.4. I have tried all discussed tricks of changing language, rebooting, then "define" option appearing and downloading dictionary. And then reverting back to English. Nothing whatsoever worked for me. It's quite annoying for me. Please help how to get that "define" option back, and download the default dictionary!!!

Only this time, that "define" appeared n French. I downloaded the dictionary successfully, & then reverted back to English. Only to get disappointed that in English, that option is still missing. I simply don't know how to import that option from French to English.

• Importing to Discussion Board Post from legacy source

Hi All,
Im sure im not the first to wonder or ask this question but here it goes.
We have recently moved out intranet to SharePoint 2013. We have rebuilt from the ground up using many of the out of box solutions as well as some third party apps and web parts however these is one aspect that is stumping us.
On our old intranet we use a SQL based forum/discussion board package which has
about ten years worth of posts, surveys, Q&As etc. As it is SQL based it is very easy for use to query and pull this legacy data however
we cannot find a way to import into SharePoint. We do not expect to import it all but would like to import at leas the last 12 months of submitted
data with at least basic fields like Title, description/content, tags, post date and post user. We do not mind other metadata being striped out like voting etc.
We have dug deep into the SharePoint database files to see if we can directly insert but
it is very complex and almost certainly not supported. We was also hoping for a discussion board data list view so we could bulk cut and paste. This is not ideal but would at least be a better option than manually inserting each post.
Does anybody have an idea where to start if at all possible.
Mark

Won't keep me logged in,
This is a server problem. In other words, "don't adjust your dial!"
spinning balls,
All this means is that the rendering is slowed down by something in the design of the website. If it is a thread with over 500 posts, you probably will have difficulty viewing it, unless you have a high speed internet connection with low latency, enough hard disk space to cache the files, and/or view threads in tree mode. To use Tree mode, go to My Settings, and select Tree View under Topic Page View in the General SEttings.
Bad Request
Sometimes will happen if your internet service provider is behind a backbone with significant peering issues.
So how big is your hard drive?
How much free disk space is there?
Have you tried to empty the browser cache?
Does this issue happen with short threads as well as long ones?
Do you have any system modification software such as Speed Download, PthHelmet, or other browser enhancement software?
Are you sure all your software is known to be Snow Leopard compatible?
See these two pages about compatibility:
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

• Bullets disappearing in discussions?

Has anyone else noticed that bullets are not appearing in discussion threads? for instance, I made the following with bullet pint lists:
Bullet 1
Bullet 2
Bullet 3
it looks fine in the editor but there are no bullets or indentations when it's posted. I haven't tested numbered lists yet, so let's do that now.
Numbered 1
Numbered 2
Numbered 3

It would appear to be a problem with the cascading style sheets which define how all the components of a page on this site are displayed and dates back to the last round of maintenance (and doesn't affect the initial post in a thread). As Klaus says efforts are being made to bring the matter to the attention of the hosts.
What has generally been working for me is to create block with a list surrounded by text
Bullet 1
Bullet 2
Bullet 3
indent the whole block in the advanced editor, then unindent the surrounding text.
The same trick can be used if you have a numbered list with 10 or more items, otherwise the initial digit is cut in half.

Hello,
We have built our custom webcenter application using webcenter framework 11.1.1.1, our application uses out-of-the-box webcenter services like discussions, announcements, and etc. After the upgrade to the new Patch Set 1 (11.1.1.2) the discussion service stopped authenticating the logged in users, however it works for anonymous users.
We are still in the development phase, therefore all the registrations of webcenter services with our application don't use WS-Security. Please advice and thanks in advance .
