ATSServer fatal exception- runaway syslogd process & massive asl.log file

Hi All,
(in lieu of a bug report)
My MacBook has recently started to go unresponsive (beachball of death), with only cursor movement and the clock indicating it wasn't frozen (Cmd-Opt-Esc didn't work either), forcing me to hard restart. When this happens Activity Monitor shows syslogd hogging all the CPU, and inactive memory climbs until it maxes out after which the fans kick in and soon after the computer goes unresponsive. I checked Console and found a 1GB+ asl.log file (which has now mutated into a new file for each instance), with pages of this message (all same time stamp, 3 examples listed):
[Time 2007.11.16 03:39:43 UTC] [Facility user] [Sender /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer] [PID -1] [Message FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x00018d03;] [Level 3] [UID -2] [GID -2] [Host oli-studholmes-computer]

My only workaround is to force-kill the syslogd process. Since this happened I've updated from Mac OS X 10.4.10 to 10.4.11, but the problem hasn't stopped. I haven't recently installed any other software.
I first noticed this trying to open a file containing Japanese text in TextMate, which led me to this page:
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/hetima/20061102/1162435711#c1184639718
(basically others having the same problem, using the same workaround, and the last comment saying it also happens in other text editors and looks like a system bug).
At this time I did a Disk Utility repair which found errors and repaired them (although I had to do the repair via Target Disk Mode as I couldn't boot from the Tiger install DVD and even the verify process would fail due to an underlying process (i think it was diskutil-can't remember) hanging). Also because there was the suggestion of a font problem I checked my fonts with Font Book (all ok), and cleared font caches with Font Finangler (this was all pre-10.4.11 update).
I'm going to go to the Apple store once I back everything up. I'd be interested if anyone else has seen this, and if so if it was related to Japanese fonts or not.
peace
PS how do I prevent Jive from turning all those nice square brackets into links I wonder? the pretag in square brackets doesn't do it, and [code] isn't enabled...
PPS this link to a [Mac OS X 10.3 ATS Services bug report|http://daringfireball.net/2005/03/fontcaches_gonewild] might also be relevant

I have a problem with safari just quitting on me. the safari window will close. a new window comes up saying safari quit unexpectedly and ask if it want to report it. I repaired permissions, a few things came up. Ran the repair. It seems to have cleared up the problem.
Thankyou very much.

  • Flash CS3 apparently responsible for "runaway" syslogd process on MacOSX 10.5

(A small sample from my asl.db file is pasted at the end of
    this post.)
I've been having a lot of trouble lately with a
"runaway" syslogd process taking up nearly 100% of one of my
processors and taking resources away from everything else that I'm
running, including my Flash IDE. Looking online, I saw that this
frequently can happen with Time Machine and other processes that
open files a lot. However, upon reading the file, it turns out that
the culprit appears to actually be Flash itself. You can
check it by using the following command in the terminal to see your
    log:
    sudo syslog -db /var/log/asl.db
    In my asl.db,
Flash has been logging hundreds of entries every second! It
regularly pushes the size of the asl.db file up to 20-30MB. I don't
know whether this is some debug flag that was left on or what else
it could be, but I'm pretty sure it started when I did that latest
Flash update through the Adobe Updater. Adobe please, please,
please fix this. It's killing the performance and battery life on
    my laptop.
    Thank you,

  • Cannot tail -nXX massive console.log file

Some process on my system spins out of control now and again and I end up with 15Gb console.log files. Two of those and my system disk has 0kb left and I've gotta clean 'em out before I can stagger back to life.
I want to get to the bottom of the problem, but every time I try and open one of those large files using the Console tool, it belches and can't really handle it - lots of beachball spinning. Nor can I <tail> the file - I get a ton of control charcters and a lot of beeping.
So - how can I read these large files so I can find out what process to hone in on?
    (Mac mini, 10.4.7)

hmm you could try 'split'ing one giant log file (and tailing the split files)
    that'd be : split -b xxxx console.log or split -C xxxx console.log
-b says put xxxx bytes per file -c says put at most xxxx bytes of lines per file
    or try doing this:
    wc -l console.log
(NOTE OUTPUT) thats xxx -- now subtract a good size and call it yyy
    sed -n -e "yyy,$ p" > endoflog.log
    (View endoflog.log)

  • Exchange 2010 SP3, RU5 - Massive Transaction Log File Generation

    Hey All,
I am trying to figure out why 1 of our databases is generating 30k Log Files a day! The other one is generating 20K log files a day. The database does not grow in size as the log files are generated, the problem is log file generation.
I've tried running through some of the various solutions out there, reviewed message tracking logs, rpc client access logs, IIS Logs - all of which show important info, but none of which actually provide the answers.
I Stopped the following services to see if that would affect the log file generation in any way, and it has not!
    MS Exchange Transport
    Mail Submission
    IIS (Site Stopped in IIS)
    Mailbox Assistants
    Content Indexing Service
With the above services stopped, I still see dozens (or more) log files generated in under 10 minutes, I also checked mailbox size reports (top 10) and found that several users mailboxes were generating item count increases for one user of
about 300, size increases for one user of about 150Mb (over the whole day).
I am not sure what else to check here? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Robert
    Robert

Hmm - this sounds like an device is chewing up the logs.
If you use log parser studio, are there any stand out devices in terms of the # of hits?
And for the ExMon was that logged over a period of time?  The default 60 second window normally misses a lof of stuff.  Just curious!

    Rhoerick,
Thanks for the response. When checking the logs the highest number of hits were the (Source) Load Balancers, Port 25 VIP. The problem i was experience was the following:
    1) I kept expecting the log file generation to drop to an acceptable rate of 10~20 MB Per Minute (Max). We have a large environment and use the exchange sevrers as the mail relays for the hated Nagios monitoring environment
    2) We didn't have our enterprise monitoring system watching SMTP traffic, this is  being resolved.
    3) I needed to look closer at the SMTP transport database counters, logs, log files and focus less on the database log generation, i did do some of that but not enough of that.
    4) My troubleshooting kept getting thrown off due to the monitoring notifications seeming to be sent out in batches (or something similar) stopping the transport service for 10 ~ 15 minutes several times seemed to finally "stop the transactions logs
from growing at a psychotic rate".
    5) I am re-running my data captures now that i have told the "Nagios Team" to quit killing the exchange servers, with their notifications, sometimes as much as 100+ of the same notifications for the same servers, issues. so far at a quick glance
the log file generation seems to have dropped by about 30%.
Question: What would be the best counters to review in order to "Put it all together"? Also note: our Server roles are split, MBX and CAS/HT.

Where do you upload the root certificates to the DB? I now think this issue may be arising out of some custom encryption that was done a while back and has since progressively gotten worse with higher utilization. Any idea where the root certificate would be found for a custom encryption project?

  • SMS_NOTIFICATION_SERVER process Active Transaction preventing SQL log file backup

    Hello,
I have been working on adding a few thousand machines into our SCCM 2012 R2 environment.  Recently after attaching several of these systems there was a spike in activity in the transaction log due to the communication and inventory of these new
machines.  The log file would fill up quickly but the log file backup would not function and allow the reuse of the log file.  Upon investigation by my DB Admin we noticed that the SMS_NOTIFICATION_SERVER process was holding open an Active Transaction
that would last 1 hour and then restart at the end of the hour.  This process was essentially preventing the backup of the log file.  In a test, I briefly turned off the SMS_NOTIFICATION_SERVER process and we noticed the transaction log file functioning
correctly.  I have included a screen shot of the process in the SQL Activity Monitor.  Has anyone experienced this issue and resolved it?  Is there anyway to reduce the 1 hour time frame or change the behaviour so that the process releases the
log file for backup if the log is getting full?
    Regards,

We had it in Simple only briefly yesterday when working on the issue.  It is in Full recovery mode.

  • Portal Runtime Error : An exception occurred while processing a request

    Hello friends,
After upgradation of my portal to the following patch level, SAP J2EE 6.20:
    <b>Portal Version :</b> EP 6 SP 2 patch 29 hotfix 0
    <b>Content Mgmt and Collaboration  version</b> : 6 SP2 patch 5
i faced many performance related issues. Portal seems to be <b>very slow</b>. After logging in, most of the time I get 2 errors:
    <b>Either</b>
    <b>1></b> Iview remains blank.
    <b>Or
2></b> Portal Runtime Error : An exception occurred while processing a request. Portal Runtime exception occured. Please check the System Log.
But when I refresh that particular iview, it works fine.
    I went through the portal.log file (/usr/sap/PEP6/j2ee/j2ee_00/cluster/server/managers/log/portal/logs). And found <b>the root cause of most of the exceptions as "com.inqmy.services.servlets_jsp.server.ServletNotFoundException: The requested servlet ( portal ) not found."</b>Aug 18, 2005 6:07:42 PM # PRT-Async 2          Fatal           Exception ID:06:07_18/08/05_0669

  • 'Could not create' and 'Fatal exception' while installing Java

    Win7 64bit
    latest Firefox
    Java 7.10 64 and 32 bit
    Hello!
Since weeks i have the following problem. Every time i want to install Java (62 or 64 bit), after the installation progress bar reached 100% and the windows closes i get 2 error messages, both containing the errors:
'Could not create Java Virtual Machine' and
'Fatal exception occured. Program will exit'
After closing both error messages i get the 'Installation successful' screen of Java again.
However, if i start firefox and go to a page requiring java (the official testing page for example), firefox freezes until i kill the process manually.
So far i reinstalled Java repeatedly, cleaning every trace of it on my system before doing so, including entrys in the microsoft uninstall wizard and the registry entrys, as described here:
    +hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>currentversion>uninstall
    search for "java"
    delete entrys+
    what is the programms problem??
edit: i cant acess java from the windows control panel either, i get the same error messages

I don't know that I'll be able to offer up any useful advice but here goes...
Can you enable extra verbose logging as part of the installation & post the results here or on pastebin.com?
jre-7u11-windows-i586.exe /l*vx c:\JavaInstall.log(feel free to adjust the log path to a more suitable location)
All of our users are local admins and tend to install whatever. This leads to a messy environment and we don't always know which version of Java is installed. So, to address that, I created a small script that scours 'HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall' for Java entries, reads the uninstall string then runs the reported uninstall string. The assumption here is that the uninstall string will be an MSI command. (All the machines & versions of Java used the same format.)
This is a Windows 7 Enterprise (32-bit) environment, but the script also works on 64-bit installations of Windows 7 Enterprise.
I've tested this with 7u11 and went as far back as 6u21. It should work with just about any version that uses MSI for uninstalling.
    @echo off
    setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
echo. & echo Checking for Obsolete Versions of Java...
    for /f "usebackq tokens=*" %%a in (`reg query HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall`) do (
         rem echo a is %%a
         for /f "usebackq tokens=2*" %%b in (`reg query "%%a" /v DisplayName 2^>nul ^| find /i "java"`) do (
              rem echo b is %%b
              rem echo c is %%c
              for /f "usebackq tokens=3,4" %%d in (`reg query "%%a" /v UninstallString 2^>nul`) do (
                   echo.     Removing %%c
                   rem echo d is %%d
                   rem echo e is %%e
                   set uninstallcmd=%%e
                   set uninstallcmd=!uninstallcmd:^/I=^/X!
                   rem %%d %%e /qb-
                   %%d !uninstallcmd! /qb-

Yes and there are a number of documents out there to do this, hence this is why I asked for the doc you used for this process. Also what is you desired version once complete.
I would recommend that you be on 10.1.3.4 as in 10.1.3.3 you can't apply MLR patches.
Its not clear if you are trying to upgrade from 10.1.3.3 to 10.1.3.4
Have a look at the metalink notes 753899.1 and 757947.1
also this is the starting point.

  • TungE2-Fatal Exception with "Cleaning Up"/Hot Sync

New to Forum!  Have been having problems with fairly new E2.  Numerous fatal exceptions.
Occurred first with documents I had loaded to my Palm.  Hot Reset didn't fix problems.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled hardward.  Just performed first hot sync, and am now getting
Fatal Exception during the "clean up" process.  Have to reset it.  What now?  Thanks
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

THANK YOU!  No more "fatal exception" message!  When I opened up contacts just ot check if it updated
I got ALL of my contacts from my previous Tungsten E!  Many of which I don't need-how do I hot sync to
get my most recent information.  Can I now revert to having Palm override desktop?  I usually edit my
calendar and appts at work so when I get home I want to hot sync so my desktop reflects these additiions
and changes.  Also, I would like to reinstall some documents that I have created that I need in my palm for
work-can I do that and should I store them on my expansion card?
You have been very helpful and thank you again, in advance.
    Post relates to: Tungsten E
Your welcome. I'm glad I was able to help you on that.
If you want to have your recent contacts, where it is located? if it is in outlook and you are hotsynching to palm desktop you need to change the method to sync to outlook. use the installation disc to chnage the method.
but if most recent data is on the pds but under diffirent username, you need to import the data then.
    1.  you need to be on the username of the E2 and in contacts application on the palm desktop
    2. click file and import.
    3. import window will open. locate the userfolder that has your recent contacts by clicking the drop down arrow of Look in. select Local disc c:/
    4. it will show up folders. if no palm folder is listed, open program files. and then locate for palm folder. open the palm folder and look for the a folder that has your username with the recent contacts.
    5. open the folder that has your old username and look for address. open address folder.
    6. you need to have the .dat file. so enter and * symbol at file name box. click import.
    7. once files are populated locate address.dat or just plain address (this contains the recent address files). click the address.dat or address file and click import. this should have your recent data.
yes you may revert the sync method, but if you made changes on your other computer and data is same on the E2 also, if you have made a connection with this computer there is no need to perform a palm overwrites dekstop.
if you want to install or have your documents back. use the documents to go apps on your computer. make sure you are on the username of the E2. click the add button and locate for this files(usually under my documents folder). then you can chnage the location if you want it under the expansion card.

  • Sender Mail Adapter Error: exception caught during processing mail message;

HI , I am configuring mail to file scenario. Need to read mail content (no need to capture From,TO or Subject details) and create a file with the content in the mail.
Need to read mails from microsoft outlook. Exchange server has been configured for POP3 protocol.
Following are the details provoding in sender mail adapter:
URL: provided url in the format: pop://<server name>
    Authentication method: plain
provided user credinetions to access mails.
    poll interval - 1min
    content encoding none.
processing parameters : quality of service-exactly once
Since there is no need to capture From,TO or Subject details, didn't select the option - use mail package.
Verified for unread mails in the mail box and made sure that there are few unread mails.
Also, created data types and other components in IR and completed mapping.
But after starting sender mail communication channel, getting error "exception caught during processing mail message; java.lang.NullPointerException" in RWB-adapter-communication channel monitoring.
please let me know what needs to be done to resolve this error.
    Thanks.

HI Stefan, i tried, but still it is giving same error. Yes, i am able to access outlook mail with the user credentials given in the communication channel to access exchange server.
I am using message protocol: xipayload . Also since i dont have to capture TO,from, subject details., created data type just with one element of type string, not in the standard format .Does this makes any difference.

  • Xi 3.0: Mail adapter fails with "exception in method process"

    Hi.
I configured the dynamic address for mail adapter following the fantastic-as-always weblog from michalgh.

    Any idea???

Yes. There is also a response message in the imported structure.. it seems it should work as a kind of application ack with some info on the server that processed the mail.
Anyway, in my server i get a 404 for the link you suggested.
In the async case i don't get any error on the SXMB_MONI but only on the A.F.
I attach the audit log for the async case:
