ATSserver is slowing certain programs

I have a client that is using a G5 that is running OS 10.3.9. The system has 1 GB of RAM. The problem that they have encountered that we cannot solve is that two adobe programs (Illustrator [when opening the program] and InDesign [when creating a PDF]) that run much slower than they should. I looked at the activity monitor and found that when these items run, the processor useage of the ATSserver goes through the roof (80% to 95%).
I have tried reinstalling the adobe programs, that didn't work. We have tried removing the most recent fonts installed, that didn't work. We tried removing all fonts that were not system fonts, and that didn't work. We downloaded a font management program, that didnt help, I am out of ideas.
Has anyone experienced this kind of problem before or have any ideas what I can try to get the programs performing the way that they are suppose to. Thanks for any help.

You might try:
Delete the following in your /Home/Library/Preferences:
com.apple.ATS.plist
com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. You might also download a shareware utility called TinkerTool System and use it to clear out various user/system caches and font caches in case they've become corrupted.

My computer is running SO slow. The intermet also keeps freezing up and I have to turn airport off then back on/refresh before it will work again. Easiest way is to have an external drive to which you copy the things you store like pictures, movies, and music
which take up a lot of space. Then delete them fron the main drive and clean it up with one of the maintenance utilities. You can readily access the external drive's contents whenever you wish.

  • Blocking p2p or setting up a firewall to only allow certain programs?

    Hello there,
I have a wireless dual-n router (WRT610N) and a cable modem (CM100) both from linksys.
My problem is that we live in an aprtment with 6 people and sometimes the connection crawls even with 2-3 people using the internet. My concern is that my roommates are file sharing like hell sometimes and eating all the bandwith. We're talking 20second to load the google main page slow, no person should be making the network that slow when it's just me and them using it.
So I'm interested in options to block access to bandwith killing activities. Friends have recommended that I set up a firewall and only permit certain programs access but I have no idea how to go about doing this. Another option would be if their was just a way to limit their bandwith, I already have my computer set with the highest prioriety on the network and it doesn't help.
Please let me know of any solutions you can suggest for this problem it sucks to be dishing out extra for highspeed internet + powerboost just to have all of fizzle away the second the connection hits the router.

You cannot limit their computer's bandwidth, however if you know what time they are using the bandwidth and downloading from Internet you may block the Internet access for them using the Access Restrictions, you can enter their MAC Addresses and schedule a time when you want to Deny Internet Access for them...

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

  • IMac trouble opening certain programs

problem is: i will try to open certain programs, they will quickly appear in the dock, and then the icon will fade away without ever opening the program.
this particular problem began a little over a year ago when i upgraded to tiger. i was running pro tools frequently at the time, and did not realize that my pro tools program would not be compatible with the new OS. so i downgraded back to 10.3.9, and that's when this particular problem began.
i knew there would be consequences to my downgrade like this. my printer no longer interfaced with my computer, safari no longer opened, etc. and i dealt with it. however, i got a strange message yesterday when i went to open a .txt file saying "this is the first time you've used the program Text Edit", and then i got it again a few minutes ago when i tried to open System Preferences ("this is the first time you've used the program System Preferences"). now for the first time ever, my System Preferences will not open.
my most recent actions have been updating iChat A/V, updating Limewire, messing with some .bin files, and it says my "AppleScript" was modified last night around the time i got the message about Text Edit (which is odd because i've never used AppleScript).

If you think a corrupted preference file may be the cause, you can run a quick command line in Terminal to diagnose any troublesome ones. If it shows any corrupted prefs files, then you can delete only those, then restart.
    Open Utilities>Terminal
    enter:
    plutil -s ~/Library/Preferences/*.plist <enter>
This checks for corrupted prefs files in your home folder. If there are any, it will display the file's path. Just delete that file and reboot. If nothing is displayed, then everything checked out okay.
You should also check prefs files OUTside of your home folder by omitting the tilde "~" in the terminal command. Like so:
    plutil -s /Library/Preferences/*.plist <enter>
Again, bad prefs files will show, otherwise you get nothing.
This may not help your problem if it's not prefs related, but couldn't hurt nonetheless.

  • In Lion, running on an i MAC (late 2006), how can I stop certain programs from automatically starting up when I start my MAC?

In Lion, running on an I MAC, (late 2006), how can I stop certain programs (iTunes, Word) from automatically starting up when I start the computer?

Any application that is open when you shut down will re-open when you restart unless you deselect this when shutting down/restarting:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items tab and make sure there's nothing listed there that you don't want launched.

  • Why does the sound only work for certain programs?

The sound is only working for certain programs on my iPad. Does anyone know why? Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you have System Sounds muted. Either the switch on the side, or double tap the home button and swipe to the right, ICON will be on the far left. If the ICON is screen lock related, then it is the switch on the side.

  • Macbook not opening certain programs and running others slowly.

My macbook has recently started not opening certain programs on my computer, such as garageband and iweb and others shut down randomly in the middle of using them. I also can't access the other account on my computer. I downloaded virus protection and ran that, but my computer is still not working right! What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Loss of sound in certain programs

For some reason, once I open certain programs the sound goes away. If I open Finale, Soundhack, Itunes, or Audacity at the same time, the sound will go away within these programs. Sometimes even if I close the program before opening the next one, it will not play sounds. Two of the programs (Soundhack and Audicity) give me output errors. Even though the sound goes away for them, though, my effects and other sounds work. Quicktime plays fine too.
At first I thought it was just a MIDI thing, but Quicktime will play midi's fine when the sound if off, too. I really have no idea what it could be. PLEASE HELP!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Um, itunes worked fine. I re-opened Finale after closing Itunes too and it worked fine.
It happens once in awhile, mostly when I need to use the program urgently to finish a piece or project.
Last week I was working with soundhack, and then opened Audacity at the same time. Bad idea. Both quit working. Just to check, I opened Finale and it also didn't work. Finale works with MIDI, though, while the other work with AIFF.

  • Music in iTunes Speeds Up When Certain Programs Run

Like the title says, sometimes, when I run certain programs and iTunes simultaneously, the music in iTunes starts to automatically play as if in fast-forward, but as soon as I close the program, the music starts playing fine again. Is there a solution besides the obvious one of not running the two programs simultaneously?

I'm having the same problem with my nano. Podcasts will sometimes play normally, and other times will be sped up and play much faster than normal. I've set the Audiobooks setting to "Normal" as opposed to "Fast" but it doesn't make any difference. And it's inconsistent...I was listening to a podcast at normal speed and paused it, and the next day when I went to resume it, it played at the fast speed. Any ideas here?

  • New headset, but certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not headphones.

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
    Hello,
    Hello,
I just recently purchased a new headset for gaming but have been having some issues with it and the system sound. One major issue is when I call someone on skype, the sound from Skype or the call will go through the headphones, but any other audio comes out of the speakers. I have also notices that iTunes also does not function when I am in a call as well. Some examples would be if I were to want to watch a YouTube video while in a call, the sound would come through the speakers and not the headphones. However, I did find a fix for it. All I had to do was disable the main speakers and the audio was transmitted to the headphones. Another example would be if I wanted to run games via Steam (Garry's Mod, TF2, ect.), I wouldn't get any sound whatsoever from the game. Not through my speakers or headphones. With one exception, Garry's Mod volume I can hear through the speakers while in a Skype call, but I want the sound to come through the headphones. But with TF2, I get no sound whatsoever. If you need any more information about my issue, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

    Hello @LayneStaley,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not the headphones, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure that your headphones are utilized when plugged into your notebook, I recommend following the steps below:
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Click on Hardware and Sound (sorting the control panel icons by "category"), and then click on Sound
    4. Under Playback, you should see one or two speaker icons. One of them should already have a green checkmark next to it (which will be your notebook's main speakers). If the second Speakers icon is not visible, right-click in the list of devices and select Show Disabled Devices
    5. A second, disabled icon of "speakers" should appear. Right-click this icon and click Enable
    6. Select the newly enabled speaker device, right-click it, and select "Set as Default Device".
    7. Click Apply.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Hardware starts to fail running certain programs

Hi I have an older macbook pro, late 2008, and it runs fine, but the past month when I'm running certain programs (ableton live, photoshop, even word sometimes) all of a sudden my trackpad stops clicking, the mouse icon dissapears, and none of the keyboard buttons work. I can plug in stuff to the USB slots, but they don't work either ie mouse. I then proceed to manually shut the computer off by holding down the power button, but I hate doing that. what should I do? anyone have an issue with this? It has all started after I downloaded maverick, and it's really irretating and bad for my computer being that I use it so often for work.

The error message you're getting is the error message the
server is sending. You need to figure out why the server
    is sending that error message.
One thing that might help debug the problem is to keep
the debug log files for every session, at least until you
know the send is successful. If a send fails, save the
debug log file for later examination. Then you can see
the entire protocol trace with the server.
    See the Session.setDebugOut method.
One possibility here is that you're running into a bug in
your application that, after some time, causes it to lose
your session configuration properties, which could cause
it to fail to authenticate, or even cause it to connect to the
wrong server. Look for race conditions in your application.
