ATSserver: Mac freezes on opening certain webpages in Firefox

Hello everybody,
when loading www.wikipedia.de with Firefox 2.0.0.1, my PowerBook 'hangs'. It becomes totally unresponsive and the only solution is pressing the powerbutton for 7sec and reboot the machine.
The error is reproducible and does not occur when being logged in as a different user.
I already found out some things about the freeze:
- my CPU is at 100% when the hangup occurs and stays there
- a process named ATSserver uses about 80-90% CPU
While all GUI-Functions are unresponsive, the computer stays reachable via ssh-shell. Using a remote connection I can put my computer back into a responsive state by killing
1. the firefox-bin process
2. the ATSserver process
Of course I do not consider this as a solution.
Searching the net for ATSserver, I found some information, but no solution:
- ATSserver-Problems can be caused by corrupt fonts
- the problem occurs only in Carbon-Apps (like Firefox), when loading www.wikipedia.de with Safari, there is no hangup
Of course, I checked my fonts via FontBook and removed a Font 'Extra MT', which was shown as corrupt. But still no solution: the hangup still occurs.
Has anyone an idea what is happening there?
Any hints? Solutions?

Those are two of the discussions that gave me some idea about the problem. True: Nowhere exactly the same problem is described. But it is always ATSserver causing severe problems and fonts are the cause.
I am not a programmer. I am a (relatively experienced) user. I bought Mac because I wanted the best OS I could buy for money (and still believe in having something near that).
Why did I critize Apple's work?
1. I did not change anything to my system prior to firstly experiencing the freeze (Especially not to my /System/Library/Fonts).
2. The first of the given URLs hinted me at an Apple-Problem instead of e.g. a Firefox-Problem or something else. Additionally I feel having proved that by solving the problem by changing some of Apple's System files. Firefox is still the same.
3. The cause were fonts that were corrupt in some way.
3a) Font Book was not able to locate the error
3b) To me as a user, a corrupt font seems to be a trivial error. I do not consider a system as stable as I want it to be if it freezes due to such a trivial cause.
Why doesn't ATSserver just give an error-message and fails to display the selected webpage? Why doesn't ATSserver just replace the corrupt font with the next best for displaying?
I may be wrong, but these are my reasons.
Let's take the issue about Apple's fault not too serious. If someone has a possiblity to tell Apple about it, do it. In my opinion, they should have an eye on it and just fix the 'vulnerability' of ATSserver.

Safari freezing when opening certain webpages or opening after a long delay

I was not able to open certain Safari pages on my Mac Pro Workstation after updating to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9. I decided to see if I could open pages via Firefox and found the issue extended to Firefox as well. I tried my Mac Book which had also been upgraded to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9. Pages opened immediately in Safari and Firefox. I checked the System Profiles of the two machines to see what I had done differently on them. Turns out I had also installed the recently released HP Printer update on the Workstation and not installed the update on the Mac Book.
I ran the HP un-install utility on the Workstation. Made sure I deleted the un-installed files from the trash and rebooted the machine so that any remaining links in the Registry would be removed. Launched Safari and it works flawlessly. Firefox works perfectly as well.
I have no definitive way of determining if the HP update was the culprit unless I were to re-install and the issue were to return. I of course won't be re-installing the update until I can do a little more research.
Take this for what it is worth but the only difference I could find was the HP software update and the issue resolved itself once I removed it and rebooted.

You need to check something. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > About Safari
It it's version 5.1.6 or 5.1.7, updating to Safari 6 may help. Apple has not posted a Safari 6 standalone installer but there is a workaround.

Now quit Safari.
Go to your Downloads folder and double click that file and follow the instructions for installing.

SAFARI DOES NOT OPEN CERTAIN WEBPAGES, INSTEAD DOWNLOADS ASPX EXTENSIONFILE

Safari doesnot open certain webpages, instead it downloads a file with .ASPX extension.
I opened the Mac in safeboot and run Disk Utility and repaired Disk permissions under it. In safe boot, safari (or other) browser opens all the webpages very well, but when I open the system in normal mode, again .aspx issue appears.
I am getting so upset with the system. Can you please help me?

We had this problem on a few websites over here and in our case the administrators of the pages had to make some changes to the pages to make them Safari compatible.
A workaround we used in the meantime was to set Acrobat to open aspx files using the finders Get Info window.
Then we set Firefox as the default browser.
Then when we clicked on ASPX links the files downloaded to the disk and when we double clicked them in Firefoxes downloads window they opened in a PDF window inside Firefox.

I've tried resetting safari, deleting all webpage data and setting time/date to automatic, but no such luck.
The message that comes up is: "Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server 'Facebook' "
I'd be genuinely impressed if anyone were to actually work out what was wrong.

Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

My Mac won't open certain web pages I believe it may be malware

Hey, about a week ago all of a sudden my mac had a very slow day where everything on it, apps and the internet was going at a snails pace. After i turned it off and on it seemed to be fine, however, since then certain webpages have stopped loading up where they worked just the day before. More and more websites seem to be dropping off every day. I enter the address and it loads about 1 tenth of the way on the bar, the page goes white and nothing happens for a couple of minutes untill it says "unable to load page". I've downloaded ClamXav and it found 3 trojans. I promptly got rid of them through dumping them in the trash and emptying it but the problem still persists. The worst part of it is that it now isnt letting me download attachments from my emails, i click download as zip and nothing happens.

Howto open a webpage with Firefox upon login on Mac?

I'd like to open a webpage upon login on Mac.
What i did so far:
- I saved the url location from firefox onto my desktop. It's a .webloc file. Firefox can open this file at this point.
- Firefox is set up as my default browser.
- Added the webloc-file to my startup list on my Mac useraccount.
Then i try. The website will open, but it uses Safari instead of Firefox (firefox is still default browser).
Next thing it tried:
- Associate .webloc files to open with Firefox by default instead of Safari (that appeared to be the problem).
- PROBLEM: Mac/Firefox won't let me use Firefox as default application to run webloc files with.
How to solve this?

Hello Zeror, you have firefox as default browser in firefox preferences only ?
or you have it already and in your safari preferences ? check from Safari : menu > Preferences > General > Default web browser > firefox .

Lightroom freezes while opening certain catalogs

While I was helped tremedously by the Adobe Tech Support to unfreeze my catalogs, the issue returns. In order to unfreeze, I have to move my preview folder to the desktop (or another folder) and reopoen the catalog. This recreates the previews and allows the catalog to work.k I've cleared the catalog cache, set the previews to medium, set the default to discrad 1:1 preview every thrty days, all in an attempt to avoid the "freeze." But, it still occurs. if I have to reopen the catalof after a time. The catalog has over 30000 images and is an integral tool in my research on fin whales in NY. What can I do to avoid this pain in the butt problem?

The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").

How to automatically open a webpage chrome, firefox... in full screen mode

I am programming labview to open some webpages and then record the activities of the mouse and keyboard. To make sure that it always start at the same size by full screen it. I use system exe vi and able to open the webpages, but i don't know how to full screen automatically. If you know how, please let me know. Thank you.

There's certainly no standard full-screen command in Windows, because there's no such concept. That's something that each program decides for itself. You could try seeing if the different browsers can process command line switches to open at full screen or whether they have some addons (like GreaseMonkey) which will allow you to automatically run the full-screen command when the browser loads.
Some other alternatives:
Simulate an F11 key press.
Send the F11 window message to the browser.
Display the browser in an ActiveX or .NET control on a front panel, the size of which you can control.
Try to take over the world!

Mac having issue opening certain files on a day to day basis

My Mac seems to have problems opening files on a day to day basis. One day it will not open JPEG files saying Mac does not support file format and then the next day it will open JPEG files but then have an issue opening PDF files or MS Word files. Sometimes I am able to reboot and the issue is resovled other times even with a reboot I still run into an issue with opening a certain file format. I Verified Permissons with a few errors that got repaied but I'm still having this issue.

I understand what you want.. but it is the wrong way to do it.
You will get into a mess with using TM this way. It is designed for backup of individual machines.. you are trying to use it for a file server.
They do not want to create a central server where they manually have to go and save and fetch new files, they want it to be automatic.
The ironic thing is you are trying to use Time Machine as a central server.. only it is not.
A central server is exactly the right way to do it. But it can be done automatically.. you just use some synchonisation software. (Central server means you all work on the same files and you have centralised backup)

Using some cloud method would be the other suggestion.. but I am not sure exactly how to do it. I have lousy internet so cloud is really too hard to use for storage.. but Apple do lots of stuff to help people with cloud to synchronize fies.

Safari not opening certain webpages?

Hi Guys,
I have been unable to access certain web pages on this computer recently, the very same web pages open on my other computers but on my G5 (OS 10.3.9) they will not load any data. These include amazon and other well known websites.
Is there any reason for this? I know its a shot in the dark but it has only recently started doing this.

OS10.3.9/ Safari 1.3.2 on MULTI_USER setup, works OK for "admin" user, other "general" user gets error message: Safari can’t open the page “https://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Welcome.woa/wa/authenticate?cty=US&aff=consumer&l ang=en” because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.mac.com”.
Fixing permissions and clearing cache did NOT solve "general" user's problem. User-specific problem, then. Which preference panes should I start chucking?

I am having troubles in opening some websites on my mac (10.9.5). I can open them with other devices in my network without any problems.
Things I already tried:
Using other browers (Safari, Firefox and Opera)
Creating another User account
Using another network
booting in safe mode - worked but didn't solve the problem

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Safari freezes when opening certain sites after java update

Since I downloaded the latest java update my computer freezes everytime I go to a website that is using javascript like Foxnews, etc. It freezes the computer. I must force quit Safari and disconnect from the internet before the computer unfreezes. It does it everytime. I have emptied the cache, repaired and verified permissions. I think I have troubleshooted everything with no luck. I can't even use firefox. Firefox now immediately goes back to the previous viewed page after it finishes loading the page I am trying to see. Very weird. All of this began after the update. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Clearing the java caches hasn't helped me. I don't know what to do. Finally I just downloaded internet explorer. It works fine. What a shame though to have to rely on Microsoft to surf the internet on a Mac.
