ATT charges on FaceTime?

Does anyone know how ATT handles the FaceTime charges?
For example, my brother has an iPhone 4 in Europe and I am in the USA. Last weekend I placed a call with him and did FaceTime. It was great. Here are my 3 questions related to this:
1. Does ATT charge me for the duration of the whole call or is it just to initiate the call and then the rest is on WiFi?
2. If I do it on an iPod Touch is the FaceTime call free from ATT charges?
3. With IOS 4.1 can I place a WiFi FaceTime call with my brother using my iPhone 4 and totally avoid the ATT network and thus avoid ATT charges?
Thank you!

I can successfully report that I was able to initiate a FaceTime call with someone else while my iPhone 4 was in wifi only mode. This means there was no way for AT&T to be involved in the exchange at all. So yes, you can use the iPhone 4 just like the iPod Touch and initiate FaceTime calls with someone else without ever actually calling them the first time.
I hope this helps.
(NOTE: The person I initiated the FaceTime call with was already listed in my contacts as a FaceTime user so the service knew how to locate him.)

I have an iPhone 4 bought in UK & using in India. whenever i turned on iMessage & FT it sending SMS to UK and it costs me Rs.5 INR. And at FT in Settings it displays a UK number. Can anyone help in changing that number and save me from international SMS charges?

It can't be changed. The phone was sold for use in the UK. Can you use it elsewhere? Sure, but Facetime activation is going to sent a message back to the primary activation server for that phone, which is in the U.K. Unlike the iPod Touch, Facetime ties into the phone number of the phone. SMS is how this tie in is done.
What carrier are you using? Bothe Aircel and airtel are supported carriers. I can't absolutely confirm, but I believe if it's being used on a supported carrier AND the line is properly provisioned for an iPhone, you should not be charged. If you are using an unsupported carrier OR you have not informed Aircel or airtel (assuming you are using one of them) that you have an iPhone and had them properly provision the line for your IMEI, you will be charged for an International text message for activation. There is no way around this and no way to change it. Other than to sell the phone and purchase one in India.

  • Can att charge me anything if i cancelled an iphone 5 order with their plan i made on the apple website, but which hadn't even shipped yet?

I just cancelled an order today for an iphone 5 that was still not going to ship fornanother 4 weeks. I am just concerned att will try and charge something since i had chosen theirbservice when i made the order, but i figure how can they charge me anything of i am not even getting the phone in the first place? Is that correct?

No, they would not charge you anything.
Although asking AT&T directly would have probably been a better choice to get the definitive answer.

  • HT204380 is there a charge for facetime

is there a charge for facetime

FaceTime is currently free and will probably stay that way unless Verizon does something. A rumor floated around that AT&T cellular FaceTimes would cost extra, but it turns out they just require you to switch to a newer cell phone plan to use it on ther network (which to me could end up like paying), of course it is always undoubtedly free on wifi no matter what.

  • ATT charges me for Wifi Data Usage

I am on 2GB ATT data usage program. I always make sure that I am on wifi before I do data-intensive transactions.
Last month, I downloaded a large file: 1.5GB and was hit with overusage.
I called in the first time, ATT told me that perhaps I made a mistake. I said OK...
The second time, I recorded each steps(video taped and took photos) of each steps of what I was doing to make sure that I was on wifi
Again I was charged for overusage.
I called ATT. They told me that it might hardware or software problem.
Anyone has any idea what's going on?
    Thanks

Pretty simple way to check how your phone is logging the data transfers is to reset our data counters, turn off 3G data and download something. If the data transfer shows up on your phones cellular data log then you know it's being logged wrong by the phone.
Given the 42 page thread on unusual and high databtransfers going on at odd hours in the night I wouldn't put it past ATT to have something buggy going in their networks that is causing people to go over on their usage. Call it coincidence that when they switch to metered data they seem to have lots of people accidentally going over on their usage. Of you're a conspiracy type it's ATT trying to rape customers while they have an excuse. If you're not it's ATTnot knowing how to properly implement the data metering and using their customers as the beta testers. It's not inconceivable to think that the outsourced code jockey in India writing the billing software didn't know what the outsourced code jockey in XYZ was doing for the metering and caused a mess.

  • No prorating on a port out. ATT charging me for 28 days of service I don't have, can't use.

I am a wireless customer for over a year. I ported out my lines on the second day of the billing cycle. I was expecting my last bill to be prorated just like has happened with every other utility and service I have canceled or ported away from in the past, including Verizon, T-mobile, home internet, phone, electric, gas.  Every other service and company prorates the last bill.  ATT is telling me they do not though.  I ported out on day two of the billing cycle and they are insisting they will charge me for a full 30 days of service, including the 28 days I am holding four deactivated, non-usable SIM cards.  This business practice is wrong and in these times of no-contract service, would definitely prevent me from going back to ATT if they won't work to make this right.  Please escalate this to someone who can help me.  I can't afford to pay for a whole month of service I can't even use....  [email protected]

It is listed in the terms of service, (that you agreed to when you got your service) that AT&T does not prorate final month's billing. Most of the other providers have the same terms.
Including Verizon. OP's memory of Verizon pro-rating is either faulty or they changed their policy since then. This comes from Verizon's service agreement in the paragraph on canceling service: "Cancellations will become effective on the last day of that month's billing cycle, and you are responsible for all charges incurred until then."
It is possible that the OP could have left those other companies when they still adjusted the last month's bill on a pro rata basis.  Even on AT&T, the "blue" customers still receive adjustments on the last bill.  My understanding is that there are very few of us "blue" customers left at this point.

  • Forwarded calls are getting charged by ATT

I have friends call my US cell phone which I then forward to my US skype number which then forwards to a foreign land line. However, a friend has recently been charged by ATT for the call as if it was direct from her US cell phone to the foreign land line. Why would ATT be doing this?
I see on my skype history her call listed (odd because I would think I would see my cell phone and not hers since it was first forwarded to my cell). She would not have called the skype number directly because she does not know the number however even if she did that would still not be an international call but a call to my US skype.
    Why did ATT charge her?

Hi Anas and Carlo, thanks a lot guys for the reply.
Will capture the debugs. But it would be difficult to capture the output for the call failure. Because, 40% of calls are not being failed. So, I cant anticipate the output for failure/success call.
In fact, I have already captured the debugs from CUBE as well as CUCM. Will capture the fresh debugs and will ping here.
    Thanks,

  • TS3367 Would I get charged for international FaceTime calls if I'm connected to wifi?

I'm out of the country and I used FaceTime and iMessages but I'm using them with wifi and I turned my cellular data off would I get charged with international fees?

There is no charge for FaceTime or iMessage, other than charges you may already pay for your Internet access.

  • This may sound silly but can anyone tell me if facetime is done through wifii or is it charged as a long distance from canada to us

this may sound silly but can anywone tell be if facetime is wifi or a long distance charge?

FaceTime is NEVER charged. It is basically going through the internet, as if you were watching a YouTube video, it just takes data. You probably have a data limit through your wireless provider, for example, I can only use 3Gb of data per month on my iPhone 5 through AT&T.
If you use Wi-Fi, you will NOT be charged for data (unless your internet provider has a cap on the amount of data you can use).
If you do facetime over cellular data, you just have to watch your data usage. You can watch your data usage in Settings > General > Usage. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all offer free apps you can use to monitor your data usage (among many other things, like pay your wireless bill, etc.).

  • Off loading photos and videos from ATT/US iPhone in Italy

    Hi -
I'm taking my US purchased ATT iPhone 4 on a backpack trip to Italy to use as a photo/video camera.  I have a regular, US customer ATT account - not a business or international account.
If I understand it correctly, to avoid getting socked with massive roaming and data charges I should:
    - keep the phone on Airplane Mode,
    -  turn off Mail accounts and Push,
    -  turn off WiFi until I'm in a wifi zone (like a hotel).
    I still have some questions.
What would happen if I left Location Services on so my photos would be geotagged?  Does that incur data charges?
I'm planning on taking a LOT of pictures and I'm not bringing a laptop so my next biggest concern is -
what would be the smartest way to back-up the photo/videos somewhere safe, so I can delete them from the iPhone to make room for more images?
    - If I use Photostream (only when in a wifi zone)- when I delete images from the phone they get removed from the stream - right?
    - iCloud (only when in a wifi zone) won't store photos - will it?
Remember - I want to do this data transfer without ATT charges. Do I understand these things correctly??
Is there a portable iPhone hard drive I can use without a computer interface?  That would be ideal - to just copy photos and videos over to an external box via "hard wire".
    Thanks for your input.

Moving photos from old iMac to memory stick
         Open Photos in iPhoto
Select All photos (which happens to be 2193 at the moment in my case)
Drag Photos on to the Memory Stick icon
That is not moving an iPhoto Library. It will not retain Faces, Titles and lots of other metadata. That's moving the Previews (only) from one Library to a thumb drive and then importing them to another Library.
    To move a Library:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I'll ask the same question that I posed
above - can you do this for Mail and iTunes?
Most certainly not. You need to ask on those forums for the correct way to move those databases.

  • Is FaceTime Free?

Is FaceTime free? I live in Denmark and call my friends back in Canada over FaceTime (both to their email address and cell phone number).  I am not concered with data usesage, I just want to know if I am charged for international calling if I FaceTime to an international number.
    Thanks!

    Is Facetime free?
My cell serve is T-mobile, and I live in the states. I have been facetiming and calling a friend in the UK. T-mobile has a plan that allows for unlimited text on cell and unlimited talk on landlines. I was doing more facetiming then calls to the UK and my bill for a three week period came to $200.
T-mobile cannot distinguish between a call and a Facetime to let me know if I was being charged. They dropped all charges though (THANK GOD!!!).
I need to be sure I am not being charged to Facetime an iphone 5 used by my friend in the UK. I understand I will be charged for calls to the cell. Is it a fact there are no charges using Facetime via wifi?

  • I am travelling to Italy next week. I will be staying at hotels that have WiFi. If I contact my wife from my iPad to her iPhone, will I incur charges?

I am travelling to Italy next week. If I facetime to my wife's iPhone from my iPad via WiFi at the hotel, are there any phone charges?

Facetime only works over WiFi.  So, your wife's phone must be using WiFi to receive your call in the first place.  Second, since she would be using Wifi during the facetime call, by definition you are not using cellular data and therefore not incurring any charges.

  • Facetime completely blank under settings

Hello - facetime on iPod Touch 4 was working and loaded fine. After being out of charge the facetime no longer worked. Screen advises to go to settings to turn on, however settings for facetime completely blank. When I try to re-set via facetime icon, it advises "error occurred during activation try again. How do I re-set?

  • Why doesn't Apple make FaceTime a downloadable app which forces At@t to allow FaceTime to everyone?

Okay, everyone who has AT&T knows they are messing with FaceTime by restricting its use over cellular.  Lawsuits pending unhappy iPhone users.  Apple can make this all go away by creating an update that makes FaceTime a downloadable App, thereby forcing AT&T to lift their restriction of buy the data share package to use FaceTime over cellular.  I know this is not Apples fault but they were aware that this was in the works prior to ios6 release and the neutrality laws AT&T is using to charge for FaceTime.   So, I ask that Apple to look into this possible solution and put an end to all this with one update?

Apple caters to the carriers, and FaceTime over cellular pulls a lot of data.  Each carrier who has requested that it be disabled has already stress tested their network and found FaceTime to be an excessive load.  Unfortunately, allowing it would slow down data for everyone.

  • Facetime call cost

    Hi all,
I'd like to know if, in case I make a facetime call from one iphone 4 to another iphone 4, it uses only data for voice+video or if audio goes through a voice call and video through the data link (in this case I would be charged with the voice call too). This is particulary important if one of the speakers is in another country, so the international call cost could be charged if facetime uses a voice call to transmit audio.
    Thanks.

It uses your WiFI connection. You cannot make Facetime calls through 3G.
You will not be charged for the calls, as the go through your WiFi.
