Attaching a license agreement to a disk image

I would like to make the user agree to a license agreement before (s)he can view the files inside a disk image. I know it's possible, because I see it all the time. How can I accomplish the same thing?

Yuck. I saw that SDK, but I was hoping for an easier, more Apple-like way of doing this. Also, I can't use ResEdit like it says, because I've got an Intel-based Mac, which can't run OS 9 apps such as ResEdit. I tried DropDMG, but that was equally confusing.
If there are no options, I suppose I could give the SDK a try. Do you know of any other third-party utilities that do this?

  • No Welcome Pane, License Agreement, Disk Select, or Customize on Install?

Just purchased Snow Leopard to upgrade my Intel MacBook w/ 10.4.11
When I install the DVD and hit Install Mac OS X.app, it takes me to a screen that says "Click the button below to restart your computer and begin the installation process." Then there's the Restart button.
Where is the Welcome Pane, License Agreement, Disk Select, or Customize button? Did I do something wrong? I seriously don't want to lose all my data and am worried that all these missing items could spell trouble if I restart.
    Tnx

Hello, I'm having the same problem with my Intel Core Duo/10.4.11 that I'm trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Except I've gone through the RESTART process 4 or 5 times now and I never get to the install screen. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Did this several times with no success.

Sorry if I failed to mention, I have done this as well.

  • When I try to open pdf documents I get a message telling me to open adobe reader and accept the end user license agreement. Can anyone help?

This happens ever since I have upgraded to the latest reader for iOS.

Adobe Reader for iOS does NOT show an end user license agreement.  It must be something else.
    shawiya,
What is the version number of your Adobe Reader?
Would you take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply?  On iOS, you can take a screenshot by pressing the Sleep/Wake button while holding down the Home button.
How do I insert an image or video and attach a file?
We should be able to tell a lot about your problem from the screenshot.

  • Mountain Lion installation fails at license agreement

I am running a Mac Mini with 10.6.8 OSx, with 4 GB of Ram, 2.07GB of which is free space.  I have been having sluggish performance, and even after using Time Machine to Backup my hard drive to an external hard drive, and subsequently removing all my music, movies etc from my computer and freeing over 250 GB, it is still very sluggish.
When I tried to download Mountain Lion from the Apps Store I ran into issues.  It would freeze and get stuck on the spinning wheel, wherein I'd force quit the download.  I performed disk permission repairs many times, and finally got it to download.  Now when I am running the installation, every time I get to the Software License Agreement window, the installation fails and more spinning wheels.
I only have one external hard drive and DO NOT want to erase all my files as I have nowhere else to transfer them to in order to create a bootable drive.  What are my options, it is a little ridiculous how it has taken me several days worth of attempts and gotten nowhere.
Could it be that I need more RAM?  As stated earlier, I have 4GB of total space, with 2.07 GB free.  I understand the OSx is 4.7GB, does this mean I need to upgrade my RAM as well.  From what I understand my friend has the same Mac Mini but with a 2GB RAM space and was able to install it without issues so I am at a loss for ideas.  Help me Obi Wan Kenobis...

I do not have the Installation DVD.  I bought my mac mini off of Craigslist and it did not come with the disks.  As far as I am aware, I am unable to reinstall the OSX without the installation DVD.  If I am mistaken I would appreciate some help on how to to reinstall it.
I did delete the ML installation file and downloaded it again, but am experiencing the same error.  This is the detailed report I get which seems to be a language identifier issue:

  • Installing snow leopard,no disk image?

Hey guys, I recently had a friend of mine who put snow leopard on a disc forme so i could update my computer but when i insert the disc and click on the .dmg file it opens up "disk image" but there is nothing there to click on? What must i do to get the diskimage to show so i can proceed with the installation??
    Cheers

Just because you have a disc, if you use it for a purpose not intended upon purchase, you are breaking your agreement with Apple. The contents of the disc are the property of Apple and how that intellectual property is to be used is determined by the EULA (End User License Agreement) that you agree to before installation.
This is what you agree to:
"A. Single Use License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you have purchased a Family Pack or Upgrade license for the Apple Software, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time. You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time."

  • Use disk image as time machine backup volume

I have a large RAID array attached directly to my Mac via firewire (so it is not a NAS). Can I create a disk image file within that larger array, then mount that image as a disk, then use that as my Time Machine target? I see lots of discussion of doing this for NAS, but I cannot get TM to recognize a mounted disk image file as a TM backup volume. FYI, the reason for this is that I want to create a sparse image that limits the amount of space that TM will take, without eating up my entire RAID array, which is huge. Also, by tricking it into thinking it is another volume, TM will still let me back up other stuff on the RAID array to TM.

    Thank you,
It's interesting to me that it will work if mounted as an SMB volume (at least according to many other posts). While I agree with you that it won't work, as I have verified that, I wonder if it could work if enabled (similar to the ability to enable unsupported network volumes).
A follow-on question: I would really like to have TM back up FROM a mounted network share to my TM database. I have a network SMB share with a lot of my data on it. I currently have to rsync it to an external drive in order to get TM to back it up. TM is set to ignore network volumes volumes. Interestingly, the SMB shares appear to get mounted on /Volumes instead of /Network, but that is aside, as both directories are set to be ignored by default. Anyhow, is there a way to turn that feature off and allow certain network shares to be backed up (and similarly blocked from back-up in the same manner that I do everything else)? Again, lots of posts out there about backing up TO a network share, but none tell me how to back up from a mounted network share to TM.

  • Time Machine or Disk Image

    Hi Everyone,
I want to backup my data to be sure that in the event something goes wrong I can get it all back again. My question is, in the situation where for some reason I have to reformat my hard drive, will there be an option in Time Machine to restore the system completely to a working version? As in, can I just go and reinstall it using the Time Machine data and get everything back?
    OR
Would a disk image do this or do the exact same thing? If I created a disk image of my entire drive, after reinstalling the OS and formatting the HD, could I just load the drive as it was from a disk image?
I'm mostly concerned about my applications. I realized recently that several of my discs have gone missing and thus I no longer have my registration codes. I'm looking for a much easier way than having the hassle of contacting the companies or having to repurchase if things go wrong.
    Thanks for your help!
    Cheers,
    Jillian

Here are a few points regarding what will be needed to get back up and running.
If you back up with Time Machine, you will need both your Leopard install disk and your Time Machine backup, in order for Time Machine to put it all back together.
If you back up to a disk image, you need to be able to boot from an external disk of some kind, or attach your Mac to another Mac, because something has to open the disk image and clone it back onto your original Mac that had the problem.
If you back up to a bootable external hard drive (using Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner), you only need that drive. You can boot from it and use it to clone itself back to the Mac.
As far as the software licenses go, it's really hard to predict what will happen unless you have an exact list of which software it is and you know how they store their registrations. Looking at my own Mac:
    1. Some software stores registration info in the application, so it moves with the application. No prob.
    2. Some software stores registration info in a separate file. Sometimes it's in the same folder as the app. Sometimes it's in the Preferences folder. Sometimes it's in the Application Support folder. As long as that file is still where the program wants to find it, you're OK.
    3. Some software does #2 but makes the file invisible, making it hard to locate.
    4. Some software does #2 but gives the file a name that does not identify which application it belongs to, and encrypts the contents. So you can't figure out where it is or what it looks like.
    5. Some software does #4 and has tied your registration info to a specific hardware combination, so there is a possibility that if it finds itself on a modified computer (e.g., you replaced the hard disk) it will notice the change, and fail to register.
If you are lucky, your software will be easy to migrate. But the more expensive or established the software, the more likely it is that at least one of your programs will need to be re-registered due to anti-piracy measures taken with the registration storage.

  • /private/tmp disk image (Unwanted download)

I noticed a disk image appear on my desktop.  Asking for info about it (command I) showed the path began with /private/tmp.  The contents of the disk contained only an Installer file, which I did not open.  I deleted the disk and there is no indication of a download in my download folder.  Has anyone seen or know about this? I am using an iMac with OS 10.9.5 and Safari 7.1.
    Thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Disk Utility taking long time to open directory with disk images

    Hi and thanks in advance.
I have a couple of CD and DVD disk images stored in a folder (and organized into several sub-folders) on a FAT32 volume.
The problem is that recently, Disk Utility takes forever to display the content of any of these folders when I select Open Disk Image from the File menu. The Select an Image to Attach dialog remains empty and the beach ball spins. After a very long time (10-15minutes? I've never had the patience to time it.), the contents will display, if at all. During this period of virtual inactivity, the program is unresponsive.
Since the FAT32 volume is also accessible from my Bootcamped Windows XP OS, I tried doing a disk check and a defragment but it hasn't improved my problem.
    Any ideas?

    HI,
Make sure your MacBookPro has sufficient free disk space to read the disk images.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • How do I mount a disk image that won't open?

I have an external drive Samsung 500 GB that was failing. I think my MacBook Air (10.6.8) caused it to fail because it wouldn't allow me to eject the disk even though I forced quit all programs. I eventually had to just unplug the drive and this caused the external disk to fail as it had not been ejected properly. Not my fault. It's the MBA's fault for not letting me eject the disk. Now the Samsung disk won't mount properly and I get a message that the drive is failing and I should save the data.
Anyhow, I used the free version of Data Rescue 3 to try and save the data on the failing Samsung 500 GB drive and move it onto a brand new Toshiba 1 TB drive.
I was unable to use the normal scanning function of Data Rescue 3 as the hardware of the drive was too damaged, and so I used the clone function on Data Rescue 3 to clone the data onto a non-failing hard drive, with the intent of restoring the data later.
I am not sure if I was successful in making the disk image. It hung up at the 99.6% point for about 12 hours when I decided to give up on it, and I shut down Data Rescue so I could eject the hard disks.
However, it would not let me do it. I tried force ejecting but still I could not eject the disks.
I ended up just unplugging the drives. I think the Samsung drive died almost completely then because it made a whole lot of clicking noises after that (it was only making a few clicking noises before that).
Anyhow, I plugged the Toshiba 1 TB drive into the computer again and used Data Rescue to scan the drive with the disk image on it to see if I could detect files on that drive.
It opened up the structure and I was able to see that most or all of the files were there (abbout 450GB of data) just from seeing the information about the files in the structure tree - the labels of the files (file type labels such as jpg, mp4 etc) and the size of the files, although I could not open up the files to check all of them.
I tested out the restore function of Data Rescue by downloading one file (<10MB) file. I am using the free version and can download one file for free to test things out.
It worked and I was able to save that file onto a second external drive (Western Digital 500 GB) I had plugged in. I had bought this drive just to do the data rescue.
So I think the files are salvageable and the disk image is OK.
However, when I tried to open the disk image in Disk Utility, by opening it as the source and choosing the WD drive as the destination I could not open it. I got an error message. I can't remember what the message was.
I tried just opening the disk image in Finder by just clicking on the disk image but it won't mount.
Is that because my hard drive doesn't have enough space? My Desktop on the MBA only has 12 GB free and the WD drive has only 500 GB on it even though the disk image is about 501 GB.
I don't know why the disk image is that size when the failing Samsung drive only had 450 GB of data on it.
Anyway, what should I do to mount the disk image?
I want to mount the disk image so that I can copy or move the files from it to another external drive so that I can save those files.
Is it because the WD is only 500 GB or does it mean there's a problem with the disk image I made?
Should I try Carbon Clone Copy? I use that to make backups of my MBA internal HDD though I have never used it for opening or making disk images.
I have never dealt with disk images before except for dmg files of applications downloaded from the internet.
I am trying to avoid using Data Rescue 3 as I have to pay for it and if there is a free option, such as Disk Utility, CCC or other, I want to try it to restore the data in the disk image.
Sadly, I think the Samsung drive is ruined beyong repair as it's making a lot of clicking sounds and doesn't mount properly in Disk Image and I get a message that it's beyond repair or something like that in Disk Utility.
So I am relying on the disk image I made on the Toshiba drive to restore my files.
(I think it was the last movie file that caused the problem because it was when I was trying to copy it onto the Samsung external drive, all the problems began - hanging up when copying it, not being able to eject the Samsung disk, causing hardware issues on Samsung disk and getting warning messages on Disk Utility.)
BTW, I learned how to eject a drive when it won't eject the normal way, I have to use command window and type in commands, but that's another post ....
    Any advice?
I am thinking of going out and buying a second 1 TB external drive so that I have a disk with enough space to open the 501GB disk image on it, just in case that was the sole problem.
However, I am not sure that is the case, and I think there may be a problem with the disk image or I am not going the right way about opening it.
    Thanks for any advice.

I think I've found the solution to this problem.
    http://superuser.com/questions/19426/im-unable-to-mount-a-dmg-getting-a-no-mount able-filesystems-error
I am following the instructions here:
I ran into a similar situation. I did what simonair suggested and I received a message in Terminal that Volume mounted successfully. However It did not help me access the mounted Volume neither was I able to confirm the mounted Volume. Nor was I able to mount the image using Disk Drill or even scan through. Nothing succeeded.
Here is what I did to solve my problem. I see that in this post some suggested that we should convert name.dmg to writable file. I used the command from Terminal to convert but was not successful. INSTEAD alternatively, I used Disk Utility, attached the Volume (yes I got the same message again, ''no mountable system files'' however, Disk Utility nevertheless attached the image, which I was able to do before anyways. This time, I selected it and then clicked New image, and then selected image format read/write, not the compressed option. I created a new image. This time this image was writable however, it still would not mount using Simonair's solution. However, this time I was able to scan it with Disk Drill with exact file locations and folder hierarchy as I had. Recovering all from thereon was a breeze. Just remember: when you create new image of an attached volume and chose not compressed but read/write, you need to have a disk with exact amount of space that totals the total space allocated within that name.dmg file (not the amount of space the data takes). Mine was huge, and luckily I had an external disk with enough space to do that and it took about 5 hours for about 400GB of disk allocation. Good luck.
And so far it seems to be working. Even though the volume is grayed out on the left side of Disk Utility, I am still able to select it as the source for making a new disk image. I chose Read and Write and no compression.
The only thing I might be doing differently is that instead of choosing the disk image as the source, I chose the volume as the source. The volume is grayed out, but the disk image is not.
It seems to be working all right. Keep my fingers crossed.
If this doesn't work, I will use Data Recovery 3 as a last resort.

  • Encrypted, sparse disk image stored on WebDAV server: problems mounting

My goal is to have secure, encrypted storage to back up my computer to a remote site. The remote site is an internet hosting provider who provides a lot of disk space and bandwidth, and also serves up WebDAV, for a very small price.
I have created a 100GB sparse disk image, with encryption, and stored it on the remote server. I then mount the directory containing the sparseimage (which is itself password protected using .htaccess) using WebDAV. My plan is now to mount the disk image, and use rsync to copy changes on my computer to the disk image.
This worked perfectly when I tested with a small sparseimage. It was interesting how the OS seems to buffer the changes in chunks: rsync appears to be copying a lot of files super fast, then it stalls as network bandwith suddenly throttles up for a while, and they take turns this way.
Unfortunately, after copying a few hundred MBs into the image, I am now having trouble.
First, when I try to mount the disk image, I see an enormous amount of data start transferring over the network. It literally saturates my broadband connection for at least an hour (I haven't been able to go longer yet). It seems to first download at top speed for a while, then switches to uploading at top speed for awhile. During this time, I notice that a mount_webdav process is consuming large perentages of CPU. However I can't see anything else going on at this point -- the disk image isn't mounted yet, all this thrashing seems to be from the process of the image trying to mount.
So first question: is this normal? Does anyonw know what actually happens when you issue "hdiutil attach" on encrypted sparse images? Does it have to touch and read through everything in the image once or twice? Maybe this is just a Bad Idea™
Second: the webdav server always ends up getting disconnected during this process before the image actually gets mounted. Do you think I'm trying to do something that tests, and exceeds, the limits of WebDAV?
Thanks a million for any help!
PowerBook, 1.33 GHz G4, Aluminum, 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   The remote server is Debian

A follow up to my MS word document. I found that I created the file in MS word 2000, and I used the Apple File Security for OS 9 to encrypt it. I can't remember the password, and I do not find anything in the key chain listing.
I have Pages 08, but I don't think I can use it if I can't remember the password to unlock this old document. Is there a program to decrypt this without a password?
    Thanks,

  • Can I do a disk image of my old system before installing Leopard?

On my MacBook Pro, I am thinking of doing a disk image of my entire drive on a 500 Mb external drive, then doing an "Erase and Install" of Leopard, and then doing a Migration Assistant from the external drive, to pull my prefs, files and apps over to the new OS.
Is this a good idea, and if so, how do I duplicate my entire system on my external drive?

Yes you can - in fact it is highly recommended
Most people like either carbon copy cloner (CCC - http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html - the one I use) or SuperDuper - http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html - SuperDuper did not have a Leopard version last time I looked although it is not critical since you will do the clone under Tiger
Once I had a good clone, I simply did an upgrade on my external drive (in retrospect it would have made more sense to upgrade the internal drive) and it has been fine
Others have prefered using archive and install
Still Others have done an erase and install and used migration assistant (some have had trouble with that too) and some have moved their data over and reinstalled all their applications (remember iLife is NOT on the Leopard disks so have to be either migrated or reinstalled after an erase and install
My suggestion (certainly NOT universaly agreed to) would be to make your clone, test it and then upgrade your internal drive - after a while (I am still waiting after a month) if all is well you can erase the external and use it for TM - if you have problems then you can either move the clone over to the internal and archive and install or erase and install - and at any time you can boot on the external back to Tiger if you want to or need to

  • Hard Drive and Disk Image not mounting

    Hey everyone,
I'm running a G5 Dual 2Ghz. with OSX 10.5.8 I'm having problems with a back up hard drive. It is an external Western Digital My Book 1.5TB SATA drive. After using it for a few months, it suddenly did not mount anymore.
*1) It also would not appear in Disk Utility.*
    a) Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive (I think because it's formatted with FAT32)
*2) I then took the drive out of the enclosure and put it in the spare bay in the G5.*
    a) It didn't mount
    b) It did show up in Disk Utility
    c) In Disk Utility it wouldn't give me the option to Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk
    d) In Disk Utility is says under Partition Scheme: Unformatted
    e) In Disk Utility I don't have the option to mount/eject only gives me the "info" option
    f) Tech Tool did find the drive and it passed all tests
    g) Disk Warrior still did not find the drive
    h) TestDisk finds the drive, but does not find any partitions
*3) I then created a disk image of the drive in Disk Utility onto an external hard drive. The image comes back at 320GB, which seems to be about right I think.*
    a) The disk image would not mount with Disk Image Mounter. It would say there is an Unrecognized File System
    b) In Disk Utility - I don't have the option to Repair Disk Permissions
    c) In Disk Utility - When trying to Repair Disk - I get the error: Repairing Disk failed with error Unrecognized FileSystem
    d) In Disk Utility - If I click Open - The Log file says:
    +Attach Image+
    Initializing...
    Verifying...
    Finishing...
    +Image of "disk0.dmg" attached successfully+
    +Mount of "disk0.dmg" succeeded+
-But it is no where to be found
    e) Disk Warrior can not find the Disk Image
    f) I took the new external drive with the Disk Image to 3 other mac computers but the image would not mount
*4. Other things I've tried when opening the Disk Image for the new external drive.*
    a) in Terminal - hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    b) in Terminal - sudo hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    c) Deleting files System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches
    ALL UNSUCCESSFUL
I'm running very low on ideas. I know I could just erase the drive and reformat it, but the files on it are very important and must be recovered.
Any help or suggestions would be very helpful. I will not have time until after the weekend to try more things. Thanks in advance if you do not hear back from me until after this weekend.

Yes, it will. But if DU says the disk is unformatted then it is also not accessible. If you have files you don't wish to lose then you will need to try recovery software:
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Errors when trying to open up a disk image that has been comp. & encrypted.

I have an old 15” PowerBook G4 that I purchased back in 2004 that I wanted to backup the data on in preparation to sell it. The PowerBook has Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) installed on it. I used my Leopard installation DVD to boot the computer up and then launched disk utility (v. 11.0 (252)). I wanted to make a disk image (.dmg) of my entire “Macintosh HD” partition, so after unmounting the partition (otherwise you get a “resource busy” error message), I selected File -> New -> “Disk Image From...(<hard drive partition>)”. The next screen presented me with a name to type in for the saved disk image file and options to compress and encrypt (128 or 256 bit AES) the image. I could not get the image to begin creation when I had both compression and encryption set. I kept getting the error message “Unable to create (error -60007)”. So, I opted to create the disk image with just compression selected. This worked fine and I was able to select the image (let’s call it disk_image1) and perform an Image -> “Scan Image for Restore...” successfully as well as mount the image and open up files (the verification process took a long time before the image mounted, but it was successful).
Next, I moved the Firewire 800 external HD containing “disk_image1” to my new MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard installed) and opened up disk utility (v. 11.5.1 (298.1)). I was able to successfully mount the image and browse and open up files with this updated version of disk utility. I then attempted to convert the disk image I just created to a new disk image (let’s call it disk_image2) via Images -> “Convert...”. I selected “disk_image1” and then named the new image (disk_image2). I then selected compression and 128bit AES encryption, entered in a passphrase and started the process. Everything worked great in creating “disk_image2”, but when I tried to open up the image either in Finder or within disk utility, I got error messages. In disk utility, I got the message “Unable to attach “disk_image2.” (Authentication error).” and within Finder, I got “The following disk image couldn’t be opened” disk_image 2 (Authentication error). Note, I was never asked to provide the password I used to encrypt the image nor did I ever select to save it in my keychain. Just as a precautionary measure, I check my keychain and did not see the password for the encrypted image saved in there.
Is there a bug within disk utility with the way a compressed & encrypted image is created or a problem with the authentication process for an encrypted image?

I have not had this happen to me, but have read similar stories from people on these boards for years. I think saving an entire OS X boot disk to a disk image is asking for trouble. If anything goes wrong, one byte of data is copied incorrectly. it can render the entire image unmountable and all of the data in it inaccessible.
I'd use Disk Utility's Restore button (or a program like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) to make a complete copy of the hard drive onto its own hard drive, skipping the disk image. If any bit of data gets dropped then only one file is affected, instead of the whole works. Do you have any other stuff on that external drive? If not, just erase it and try again, copying everything directly to the drive instead of to a disk image.
