Not possible at present.  I've read a few rumors about the Touchpad having the ability as a USB master, but in its present configuration, it is a USB slave only device.

  • How do I make a backup recovery using my portable usb drive?

I have an 8gb usb flash drive, and I tried to backup my system onto it, and couldn't. It said "Please insert a usb flash greater than 7.6gb". So I inserted another portable usb drive that had over 180gb of free space, and it still keeps repeating the same message even though the drive clearly has more than 7.6gb on it, it has 180gb. So how do I correct the problem so that I can backup my recovery system? My laptop is brand new, I just bought it a few days ago, I haven't even had it a week.  Here is the computer stats
    Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976
OP: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
    AMD Sempron SI-42
    2GB DDR2 RAM, 250GB HDD

Duplicating your post on the same Category won't help you much and it makes it difficult by
    keeping track.
The problem you are having is related to the fact that your USB Drive format is FAT or FAT 32.
This type of format doesn't allow for a single file to be greater than 2GB and 4GB respectively,
and the single backup file you are trying to copy is greater than that so it doesn't allow it.
What you can do is format your USB Drive to be NTFS, which has no limit on what size a file can be
except the size of capacity the USB can store, but I'm not sure that's a good idea because of
    the disadvantages of the format.
Also you can burn it to DVD's, which is recommended, or buy an external Hard Drive.
When you insert the USB go to My Computer and left click on the USB icon and go to properties
and there you will see what format it is.

  • I have recently deleted several old backups from a portable usb drive (formated NTFS-3g(MacFUSE). The macmini can´t see it anymore but my imac does?

I have recently deleted several old backups from a portable usb drive (formated NTFS-3g(MacFUSE). The macmini can´t see it anymore but my imac does? The usb ports of the mac mini can still see my other drives formated with FAT32.

Thanks, it is working now, after I have installed NTFS3G.
I did not format the drive. I was using it as purchased to do backups for a while. After the corporate backup system was working correctly again I was using the disk at home for my homevideos. Since the corporate backup was running correctly for ten days in a row, I have decided to delete those backupfiles on the usb drive. Each backup was a folder consisting of almost 30GB data, mirroring the servers harddrive which is running on windows xp. After I have deleted those folders, only the video files remaind and I could not open the drive on the macmini anymore.

  • Help! Portable USB drive recognition problems...

    Hi
I posted this as a reply to a similar thread also.
My friend put some files onto my portable USB drive from his PC, and now my mac ain't reading the USB - I need the files off it urgently. Anybody got any tips????

    Hi
I have had problems getting a Mac to recognise a memory stick and I've found that rebooting OS X can sometimes help, as can plugging and unplugging it several times.
Most memory sticks are FAT 32 formatted by default and Windows can read/write these ok; in theory, so can OS X but it doesn't always work reliably for me. I have found that using Disk Utility to format the memory stick using an OS X format can make it more reliable, but of course that won't help you in this situation because Windows won't recognise a Mac formatted memory stick and formatting will clear off the files you want to get at.

  • How do I transfer pictures, music, etc to another account on the same Macbook?

I needed to create another user on my MacBook, but am not sure how to transfer my pictures, music, etc from my other account to this one. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Thanks Carolyn,
Unfortunately, there isn't an IMPORT option in Adobe Bridge 6.
There must be a way to do this, otherwise any photo that is in iPhoto would not be able to be worked on in Photoshop!
    Or am I going crazy?
    Thanks again

  • Pictures, musics, etc

Can I recover lost pictures, music, etc after getting a message stating startip repair cannot repair automatically or is my harddrive completely crashed?

When I click on repair then enter my country, put in my password for administrator I get a screen for system recovery options. When I click on startup repair it says cannot automatically repair this setup and when i try and click on system restore it says no restore points have been created on your computer's system disk. to create a restore point open system protection. when i click system protection it says your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state. if you use system restore in this limited state you cannot undo the restore operation. Now all I can do is press OK and it goes back to the system recovery options screen.

Does she normally sync to the MAC?  IF she does, she can restore her phone from a backup, if she has one.
If she doesn't normally sync to the MAC then she can sync back to her PC and then restore to her backup.
If those options don't work then she is sol

  • Plugging in iPod dismounts USB drive-Finder copy

I have 3 USB and 8 FireWire drives in addition to 3 internal drive connected to my Mac Pro. I am running OS X 10.5.2 and when I plug in my iPod classic (160 GB), one of my USB drives dismounts. This happened when I was copying a large amount of data from that drive to another drive. I got the dismount dialog, and the Finder copy progress bar dialog is still left on the screen.
Also, I have never been able to cancel a Finder copy under Leopard successfully. I always have to end up force quitting the Finder.

That's a lot of drives... probably too many.
Is that drive that dismounts on a hub with the iPod? Is it bus-powered (takes power from the hub)? If so, my guess is that the iPod initially takes more power than the hub has left, and that causes loss of connection to the USB drive.
I would keep most of those external drives disconnect and plug them in only when needed. Doing so will make your Mac run faster. And that Finder copy progress bar issue may go away as well.

  • Adding a Portable USB Drive to Air?

I have 64gb Flash Storage Air.  Out of space. I opted to get a portable hard drive instead of adding OWC internal space (and it was cheaper).  How do you best maximize a portable drive?  Just as a Time Machine backup or is there more?

If you are running out of space on your computer you'll have to move something off the computer onto the external drive. If your computer sits on your desk all the time this isn't too inconvenient but if you move it around - especially if you travel around college or work, for example - lugging around an external drive isn't convenient. So I suggest that the things you move to the external drive are things you won't need all the time. Music, video, and photos immediately come to mind.
You might also consider a mini flash drive which has a very small profile - they stick out about as far as the mag safe power plug does. The largest capacity right now is 32GB.

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can i export my iphone 5 backup on my laptop to a portable usb drive

    Hi All
Does anyone know how to export the backup of a iphone 5 on my windows machine C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
to an external harddrive properly. The reason for my question is that my local disk on my laptop has started to fail and before it becomes unbootable i would like to move my latest successful backup to a portable drive. I did try and copy the the folder with my latest backup from  C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to my usb but for some reason it only copies (3.76GB) 13,000 items whereas in the actual location i can see 49,000 items present (12.6GB).
Do i need a specific tool or application to extract this backup or can you not do what im asking it to do.
    Thanks :-)

No. You can not restore a backup made with a newer version of iOS to a device running an older version of iOS. Since the 3G won't run anything higher than iSO 4.2.1, it's not possible to restore your backup to it.

  • How to attach an external USB drive read-only

I would like to hook up an external USB hard drive and would like to do so in such a manner as to ensure that absolutely nothing is modified on the drive at all. Is there some way I can specify this before I connect the drive or while I plug it in? (e.g. hold down the shift key or something like that.) I have found all sorts of posts from folks who wanted to know how to turn off read-only mode, but haven't had much luck finding out how to turn it on.
I noticed recently when I plugged in a USB stick that it sat and blinked for some time. I'm guessing that OS X was busy indexing the drive. I'm not sure if the index was written back to the USB stick, or cached somewhere locally. If it was written back to the USB stick, I would like to prevent this from happening when I plug in a real drive.
Thanks for any tips you can give me.
    --wpd

If the drive is formatted NTFS, it will automatically mount read-only. If it is formatted HFS+ or FAT, I don't know of any way to external drives to mount read-only without installing OS X Server for $500.
