Attaching a USB drive to the Home Hub 3 = slower t...

I have a 1TB external drive I thought I'd try to network up by attaching it to the USB port of the Home Hub. Unfortunately the transfer speed is so slow I could have written the files myself in pen before it finished (well bit of an exaggeration).
Is there any way to speed this up because as it stands its pointless - you may as well put something more useful in that spot like another ethernet port or something.
I tried to transfer a 200mb file and it took over 6 minutes. That is laughable performance.

There is a post HOME HUB 2.0, USB HDD, dated 28-10-2010. Use the search function (or use Google, which I did).
It's a long time ago, but it may give you some help. If you succeed in getting it to work, you may find it slow, as the Home Hub processor is slow and USB2 transfer speeds are slow.
Might be better to connect the drive to another computer in the network, and use USB3, if you have it.
I haven't networked my Windows 7 computers as I have been told that it's troublesome setting it up.
It worked well with Vista in 2010, but I had a large electric bill as I seem to remember that you have to disable the hibernate and sleep functions on the computer connected to the drive.
Would be interested to know if you have success.

  • Finding hard drive connected to Home Hub on Window...

    Hi all,
I've connected an external hard drive to the USB port of my Home Hub 5. It's detected fine and when I go to Run and enter: File://192.168.1.254 it opens the hard drive without any issue.
Is there an easier way to access this though, or some way to make it appear in My Computer, or something similar. Whilst I'm happy to use this feature, others in the family could get confused and I'd be much happier if it appeared in their Shared Documents or My Computer section. Is this possible?

I haven't tried this but could you not put a shortcut on the desktop which would allow you to access it that way.

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • How do I get Lightroom to find photos on a USB Drive when the Drive letter changes?

THis is probably a simple question but I keep getting stuck.  I ha
ve my catalog and some images on my laptop hard drive, but the majority are on
an external USB drive.  Sometoimes the drive gets assigned
E:, F;, or G:, and when it cahnges, the catalog says the phots are missing.  How do I get
Lightroom to find the photos again?
    Tom Barnwell

The quick fix is to click on the folder containing the missing files and choose "update Folder Location" then find the folder on the USB drive. The longer term and fix you should apply is to set Windows to always give the USB the same drive letter. You can do this through the XP Disk Management application in Computer Management (Control Panel applet). The following screenshot is for XP, but Vista and Win 7 will something similar which can be accessed via Administrative Tools (see second screenshot).

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Poor service and the saga of the Home Hub 2.0

Since upgrading to Total broadband 3 earlier this year, I've had problems with the Home Hub 2.0 (type a).  It keeps locking up/crashing.  Its the home hub rather than the broadband connection, which when used with a Linksys modem router works fine.
I've run through usual fault finding and rectification - hard reset, plugging into test socket, countless line tests.  of course trying to get BT call centre staff to understand its the home hub thats playing up/at fault, not the connection, is like banging ones head against a very hard wall.  For a piece of equipment less than a year old it should work without problem.  And I was tempted to go to PC world and buy a replacement modem, but decided to preserve with  BT's 'help' desk.
Over the past 3 or 4 months I've probably made one help desk call about the same issue each month.  Have to repeat myself time and time again and get fobbed off with another excuse, or promise of call back.
Eventually got through to a supervisor - after insisting when a call log was closed and marked 'resolved' when we were still having the problems and hadn't had a call back.  Repeated my issues for the 4th or so time, went through what I had done to date (restore to factory settings, checking its logs, etc etc)  he finally consented to send a replacement home hub.
I get an email telling me it would be delivered on the 6th before 6pm.  But of course it wasn't.  And I did as the email said, and tried to phone the number to say it hadn't arrived only to get an answer phone message saying the help desk was shut.
So wasted my lunch break today on the phone to BT trying to find out where it was, only to learn that BT had posted it to a previous address which I haven't lived at for 4 years.  Well done BT, it takes real skill to be that rubbish.
Fingers crossed another new one is on its way to the right address.
I have however a couple of questions, which as I can't face phoning the call centre again I thought I'd post on here:
    1) How on earth did BT manage to send  the replacement home hub it to the wrong address?  Especially since the original one was sent to the correct address & my delivery address is set  correctly on the web portal and the agent handling the call confirmed the address? - and what are you going to do to ensure it doesn't happen again (dare I mention data protection - as the home hub pack presumably has some personal details on it..)
    2) In the final call today I was asked for my date of birth and mothers maiden name so they could add it to the account - afterwards having not been asked by BT for this before on countless calls  I wondered is this standard practice - or should I now be worried?
    3) How do you have a sensible discussion with someone - preferably in the UK - about the customer experience?  As mine as has been rubbish (you might be able to tell from the tone of this post), and I'm regretting ever having upgraded and wishing I had instead gone to another broadband provider.
    4) Given that issues with certain models of home hubs seem to be known issues (at least to google) why do the call centre agents always focus on the broadband connection -(typical conversation with an  Agent "..so your connection keeps dropping", Me: "No the connection is fine.  The home hub has crashed again". Agent "So your connection has dropped"? and on and on) rather than actually listening to the customer. (Can you reset it - yes already have, several times  and so on)
Any answers from a moderator would be welcome.
I am actually happy with BT's  broadband product, and don't want to have to go through the hassle of changing provider, I'm just disgruntled at how bad the home hub has been, and how poor the customer service has been.
    Thanks.

    Hi EKandrew,
To be honest I have not heard of the hub locking up before.  The questions you have been asked by our helpdesk are aimed specifically at your connection as most problems tend to occur here, either with slow speed or hub drops etc.
Could you be more specific in how the hub locks/crashes? What do you notice when this happens? What way do you have your connection set up?
As much info as possible would help
    In answer to your questions:
1/ Sometimes we have an old address still on your account and this has not been updated for packages/correspondance.
2/ Nothing to worry about, we ask these questions for additional security.  If you have quoted your account number previously this is normally enough for most things however the advisor probably just noticed we didnt have this info on file.
4/ As above, this is not a common problem and most issues that come to us are to do with your connection.
    Thx

  • Can I install OS X 10.6 on a USB drive after the Mac HD dies?

I don't have a bootable backup HD for my Mac, nor a complete backup copy of my HD.
So, if the Mac hard drive suddenly fails one day, would I be able to still turn on the Mac, plug in a USB drive, insert the OS install CD, and install the OS on the USB to use the Mac???

Ok, thanks Can the USB be one of those cheap small flash drives (16GB or so)?

for further notes, my dads macbook (same model but running 10.7) connects and works fine, as does the 2 windows desktop computers and laptops we have, my xbox and play station 3 consoles, my iphone 5c, ipad mini, my mums iphone 5, and my dads and sisters samsung galaxy note phones.... even as i type this i can kind of see the problem being with my macbook rather than anything else.... but if someone could give a solution that would be great =]

  • The Home Hub PS3 Remote Play Issue

    The problem:
If you set your PS3 to allow remote start via the internet (a better and more 'greener' option than leaving it on all day) and power it down, the PS3 will turn on again only after a few seconds without you connecting via remote play, after nothing connects to the PS3 after 2-3 minutes, the PS3 removes the option to allow remote start via the internet to save the PS3 powering up and down all day, thus rendering the remote play feature useless unless your in the same house which is somewhat pointless.
Now..The PS3 doesn't start by itself from outside influence, it starts from a broadcast from the router itself. You can test this easily by turning your PS3 off with Internet Remote Start enabled, and immediately thereafter yanking the internet connection from your router. The PS3 will still start by itself, even with no internet connection.
The culprit is the ARP table of the router, which is what links the MAC address to the IP address. On most routers, this is a dynamic table which updates by itself every now and then, by sending a broadcast (signal to all machines on a network) asking for a reply from a specific IP address. It goes like this:
BT HOME HUB: Hello, I have an IP address 192.168.0.144 in my system here that reported it had a MAC address of 01:44:23:F4:E5:23. Could the owner of IP address 192.168.0.144 please report the MAC address so I can confirm and update?
PS3: Wohoo, I have 192.168.0.144. My MAC address is 01:44:23:F4:E5:23. Please update your records.
    (30 seconds go by)...
BT HOME HUB: Hello, I have an IP address of 192......... and on it goes. My router checks every 30 seconds, some check every minute, others every hour, 6 hours, etc etc. The problem here is though, that the ARP table update request will turn on the PS3. So mine gets a wakeup-call every 30 seconds.
This is called an ARP broadcast, it is sent from the router (and other machines on the network) to the IP 255.255.255.255, which is received by all devices on the network. The PS3 will only respond to ARP broadcasts from its Default Gateway, meaning only the router can wake it by ARP broadcast, the other machines on the network cannot.
    The Solution:
Allow users to telnet their own home hub or create a firmware update fix.
We've been looking into getting the new BT Infinity, can anyone confirm if the Infinity hub is the same as the HHv2 with all its problems?

Very happy this morning, after over a year of waiting for the remote play feature to work with the home hub and PS3..it looks like BT have added a fix into the Home Hub v2 FIBRE. last night i thought i might as well give the remote play a go as there might be a slim chance of it working AND IT DID! i set the PS3 to remotely start via the internet, powered down and it stayed in standby mode!!
unfortunately this doesn't mean the old hubs work though (although i cannot test this) so ill still be bumping this until there's an official response. Can anyone confirm that the old hubs still don't work for me? we got rid of the old hub when we upgraded.

  • Would a wireless bridge work with the Home Hub 5?

Hi there. I am wondering if I might avail myself of the community's advice and wisdom. I'm due to have Infinity 2 installed in a week or two, but I have a few concerns about how to get things working properly. Mainly I am wondering how on earth to connect my PC to it, when they won't be on the same floor in the house. The worrying over this almost has me rethinking the wisdom of changing from my old ISP of twelve years.
The Home Hub 5 will be installed downstairs at the master socket (or whatever that thing is called), but the family PC (currently wired to a Netgear DGT2200 'N' modem/router) is upstairs. I can't run wires all over the house (so sayeth the wife) so I am a bit stuck thinking of a solution that is workable. My neighbour had his Master Socket moved (I think) to solve a similar issue, but I'd prefer not to (if the engineers would even offer that) as access to the socket for the study is really restricted by several very full and rather rickety bookshelves.
I was thinking of using a wireless 802.11ac bridge, like the Linksys WUMC710, so I can connect a PC, Xbox360, SkyHD box and Blu player to the network whilst not having to use 4 separate adapters. However that bridge is single band only, (frankly I can't find a dual band AC bridge). Would the 5ghz signal from the Home Hub 5 be strong enough upstairs, bearing in mind it has to go up one floor and through one (admittedly paper thin) wall (the study is nearly directly above where the hub would be positioned)? It would rather defeat the object of switching to FTTC if the only room with a decent connection is the one where I only use ipads, another SkyHD box and very occasionally a laptop. The PC is arguably the one device that I want/need a good connection for work/play.

I'd hoped I was done with wondering what to do on this, but more reading has confused me even further.
    1. If I did ask the engineer (likely a contractor I gather) to have the master socket moved upstairs (and he agreed to do it), is it true that the current telephone extension sockets would not longer work unless rewired? Not a deal breaker as I only use one of them for the master unit for my cordless phones.
    2. If the engineer either refused to move the Master Socket or I opted not to ask due to the extension socket issue, am I correct in thinking I can pay something like £130 for a BT Engineer to come out to specifically move the Master Socket and rewire the extension sockets? The difference in cost between that and buying good powerline extenders and a switch is not that much (especially if I'd lose less connection speed by doing that). Actually I think a friend of my father's is a BT engineer...I should probably be asking him this.

  • Information within the home hub

Has anyone recently challenged the accuracy of the online monitor for Broad Band usage?
I have been told I am going to breach the limit despite being on holiday.
When I looked into the home hub the data usage over a connection time of nearly ten days amounted to a little over 3.3GB (figure1) whereas the data for the online monitor was nearly 17GB (figure 2).
I phoned BT, the poor advisor I spoke with had no idea that this information was stored in the home hub and was completely out of their depth, unfortunately this meant the discussion was of no benefit whatsoever.
The information within the help section of the home hub clearly states that the data usage corresponds to the connection time (in this instance almost identical to the online usage monitor) (figure 3).
How can I challenge BT on this massive discrepancy and avoid being overcharged for the etherial data that I am not using?
If a BT technician can explain the discrepancy to help me understand I would be most grateful, if not then anyone with limited data usage please start to challenge BT with the data they so helpfully store for us in the home hub
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

as has been posted many times before the hub refreshes the usage figure at around 5gb or every time the hub restarts

  • Changing PC that manages the Home Hub?

    HI
I'm just getting a new PC which will replace my old home desktop machine...does anyone know how I can find a copy of the Home Hub manager software that runs on Windows 8 (of course I have lost my disk that I had the first time round... :-)  )?
I'll only be connecting with the home hub wirelessly from now on, whereas previously I used Powerline adapters..I'm assuming this wont be an issue.
    Thanks!
    mike

you don't need the cd  if you enter 192.168.1.254 into your browser then you will get hub manager where you can change password or wifi password or channel etc

    This is still a problem!
I have a PS Vita which when away from home I can connect to my PS3 at home and schedule recordings on PlayTV or stream video content..... oh except I can't because the Home Hub 3 doesn't work properly.
Can someone at BT fix this PLEASE!  If I use a different router the problem ceases to exist, so its a Home Hub issue, sadly I can't ditch my HH because I also have BT Vision.

BT Vision will work with any router. There is a guide here if you get problems.

Since upgrading to ios6, all the family's apple devices (new ipad, 2 iphone4 & itouch) are having difficulty reconnecting to the home hub wifi network. I.e, every time the lock screen comes on, the wifi connection is lost when you reopen the device and we have to reconnect through settings. This appears to be an ios6 software issue.
Is there a solution to this wifi connection issue or do we wait for a software fix?
I'd hate to think Apple is going down the Microsoft path, of passing untested software onto the user. What ever happened to Regression Testing, to ensure the existing functionality remains intact?
I bought into the Apple dream, because it was intuitive, reliable & enjoyable to use, all the things that Microsoft windows isn't.
Other issues we are experiencing are, Games are stuttering and the kids really miss the old YouTube app.
