Attaching audio to clips

when i add sound to my clips, it displays it in the timeline viewer. how do i get the sound to attach to just that one clip so i can remove it from the timeline viewer? i ask because when i have audio in the timeline viewer but then select a different clip to export, it exports what's in the timeline viewer.

Welcome to the Forum, gOrOsie!
I'm not sure I understand exactly what you want to do. You want to "add" an audio clip to a video clip so the video clip plays the audio, right? If I'm wrong, please say.
There is no way to "join" the video and audio in iMovie But iMovie lets us export a few clips of the project to a Full Quality movie that contains both the audio and video of that section of the project. Essentially, you export the clip(s) you want, and the audio below the clips is exported with it.
You must first align your audio clip to your video clip on the Timeline so they play together. Then you export that video clip to a Full Quality movie, import the FQ movie back into the project and use it to replace the original video clip and audio clip.
After aligning the video and audio, select the video clip. Choose File > Share. Click on the QuickTime button at the top of the window. Check the checkbox "Share selected clips only". In the popUp menu "Compress movie for:", choose "Full Quality", then click Share. Name the new file "Joined" or something, choose the folder to save it in, and click OK.
In the Finder, locate the Full Quality movie and drag it to the project's Clips pane or Timeline. Use it to replace the video clip and audio clip.
Note that if the audio clip is longer than the single video clip above it, exporting the single video clip will "chop off" the audio before it's done playing. To preserve the entire audio clip, select additional video clips above it on the Timeline before you export. If you need to later, you can split the imported FQ movie to remove the "too-long" video stuff.
Note too that iMovie lets you control which audio tracks you export with the selected video clips. Use the checkboxes at the right end of the Timeline to enable/disable audio on the three tracks.

  • Attaching Audio to clip later

I have just carefully marked in and out points to 10 clips in the viewer and dropped them on the timeline, then realised I have not brought the audio with them, can I add the audio to the timeline without having to do the whole process again.
    Mike

    Reset the trackpanel (the A1, and A2 etc on the left side of the timeline.) So that V1 > V1, A1 > A1 and A2 > A2
    Then:
    1. Use the UP and DOWN arrow kets to navigate the playhead on the first frame of the first clip in the timeline.
    2. Hit 'f' to Match back to the original clip in the VIEWER. See that it inherits the in and outpoint you used in the timeline.
    3. Hit F10 (overwrite), or if that does not work (Switch Expose OFF in your mac's System Preferences) drag the clip from the Viewer over the right side of the Canvas over the word OVERWRITE.
    4. step to the nest cut with the UP arrow and repeat from step 2.

    What device?

Where is your destination file when you import it?

  • Edit attached audio with movie clip

I made a project by combining movie from one camera (with audio muted), plus audio only from a second camera as an attached audio track. The two cameras were recording the same scene, so the (better quality) attached audio can be put in sync with the video from the other camera.
How then can I delete a section of the video AND the corresponding section from the attached audio channel, so the remaining audio remains in sync?
"Split Clip" splits the movie but not the attached audio. Is there a way round this?

Sorry I never posted back about this. I got sidetracked with putting together a different vacation video and forgot all about it.
Anyway, what I posted before totally worked. I exported the movie as an mp4 at full quality (I'm not sure if there was any loss of quality, as the footage I started with was not very high resolution. There was no discernible loss of quality, though). Then I took that newly created mp4 and re-imported it into iMovie.
iMovie treated the audio that had previously been pinned as embedded audio, so now when I cut a clip, it cuts the audio with it.
Kind of a pain to do the extra step (especially since importing all of my raw, unedited footage and re-importing it took a while, but working with it now is soooo much easier.
Hope this helps anyone who may stumble onto this thread in the future.

  • HT1583 When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls

Hi, please help me When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls help

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
    My notes on this:
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Attaching audio and editing M2V files

I have about 200 M2V files that were provided to me for use in a Final Cut Pro project. They originated from about six different HDV cameras in 1080i60. The clips were captured to a PC running some version of Pinnacle software on-site at an event. Each M2V file has no sound, but is accompanied by a pair of WAV files. Left and right channels. I have MPEG Streamclip to transcode the clips, but the problem I am having is figuring out how to get the audio attached so that it can be edited. Also, I'm wondering if this can be done without transcoding with generational loss. Since they are HDV files, can they be converted to Quicktime HDV wrapper? Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thanks.

What are the pixel dimensions of the m2v files? They should open in quicktime player and you should be able to check there. Some compression/conversion utilities allow you to attach audio files during the encoding. Don't think compressor will do it. I will see if Squeeze will do it, if you like, but Squeeze costs money.

  • Re-attaching audio to video after a detach?

Any one know if re-attaching audio to video after a detach? I discovered(with irritation) that expand, rather than detach, is what I initially was trying to do. thanks!

sorry, but your only option is to make a compound clip at that point. it explicitly states this in the manual:
"To reattach an audio clip to its original video clip, you need to create a compound clip."

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.5 – How to Create Storyline with audio-only clips. I'm following exercises in Diana Weynand's Pro Training Series, and this function is greyed out. Trying to create crossfade transition. New Compound Clip can be activated however.

Chapter 7. Page 269. Exploring Audio Transitions. Selecting two audio clips, then control-clicking the clips. The dropdown menu to Create Storyline or (Command G) is greyed out. The function no longer seems to be available. I've found other functions that no longer apply with the latest version in relation to the book, and I assume that this is another one. But I'm trying to follow the book the best I can. I know there's a workaround. I can simply select an edit point and add the cross dissolve (Command T), but I wonder if this accomplishes the requested exercise from the book.

  • How can I reinsert the deleted audio from clips in my sequence?

How can I reinsert the deleted audio from clips in my sequence?

I can tell you a work around to get you going in the meantime, just may be time consuming if you have a lot of clips in the timeline.
double click a clip missing audio
press the go to in point and copy the timecode to notepad
press the go to end point and copy timecode
right click clip, and reveal in project
double click the original in project
paste in timecode and set in & out points again
    drag audio
As I said not the quickest way, but it works, and won't actually take as long as you'd think, 30 secs or so per clip, i just hope you don't have over 100 clips without audio

  • How can I separate audio and clips?

How can I separate audio and clips?

I guess you mean "audio and video clips".
Then select the clip including both audio and video (while in the timeline) and press cmd-L: this unlinks the stereo pair from its video. If you want to work on each audio channel separately press alt-L while the stereo pair is selected.

  • Relinking Deleted Audio to Clips

Is there a way to relink deleted audio from clips that were unlinked from their audio tracks that were then deleted? so basically, if I have a clip, cut it and edit it, unlink the video and audio, delete the audio, and then later want to have the audio again. One way would be to drag in the clip, align it with the old clip, copy all edits and delete the old clip, but I have a lot of clips. I thought one option would be to open the .prproj file in a text editor and change it there, as this has saved me hours of work on other applications. Can't find any info though on the file structure, and I could spend the better part of 2 weeks hunting this one down. If anyone has a fix, I would very much appreciate it. And Alt-dragging the source clip from the bin onto the old clip does not bring in the audio.
    Thanks

There's no 'easy' way to do this.  That's why it's best to never delete the audio from clips.  Mute the track if you have to, but leave the clip in tact.

  • Return audio to clips in timeline after muting

First let me thank you for helping me on how to import my clips, taken with a JVC, to PrE7 from my hard drive.
After getting media into the timeline and sceneline I muted the clips as I was reviewing them to remove any noise or to shorten any clip. I now want to turn the audio back on for these clips without having to go to each individual clip in the timeframe.  Can this be done or do I have to bring back the audio one clip at a time.  Appreciate any help.

Just tried that and it worked.  Thanks so very much sure saved me quite a bit of
time.  Now to take a shot at inserting narrative and other audio as well as some interesting effects.
Thanks again to you and Steve.
