Attaching parallel port to TC with adapter cable?

I have an old Brother laser printer that works fine, and I'd like to attach it to my Time Capsule so that other computers on my network can print to it.
I see that there are cables available for this (for example, Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB to Parallel 6-Foot Printer Cable, available from Amazon). If I connect my printer to the TC using this cable, will I be able to print to it?
The computers which would print to it are running OS X (10.5), Ubuntu 8.10, or Windows XP Home Edition. I know that adquate drivers are available for the printer for Ubuntu & Windows -- printing is fine when the printer is connected directly to the computer with the standard parallel cable.
Thanks.

Well, it's a little more complicated than implied in my last message. Sometimes TC loses touch with the printer (Mac stuck waiting while trying to "find" the printer) after awhile, and sometimes I can come back a couple of days later and print successfully without having restarted anything. So it seems inconsistent...
Any insights would be appreciated.

  • Parallel port communication error with new addresses

MD2 motors controlled by LabVIEW. I am trying to communicate with the motors through a parallel port. I plug in a PCI card which can provide another two parallel ports. I check their addresses which are 1110-1117 and 1120-1127. Then I replaced the old addresses (378), but could not communicate any more, neither writing nor reading. The parallel port setting in BIOS is bi-directional, since both writing and reading are necessary. Does this matter?
I really have no clue why or how this could happen. Any help appreciated.

    Hai,
I have installed a additional parallel port card (in pci slot) in my pc.  Then i installed the device driver that came along with the parallel port card.  I
checked out the base address it was 278H (but i dint look the address before installing the device driver).   In general centronics interface ( parallel port) are placed at their respective addresses strictly.  Try reinstalling the device driver that came along with the external parallel port card or try latest updates from the manufacturer if available.
    of the card.

We do not have any DAQ cards within the PC. We have the parallel port which is EPP and ECP compatible having the address 278h on LPT2 and we are trying use this port for reading 8bit data from an external circuit. We developed a vi program in Labview 5.0 to control the parallel port.We tried with the Data lines to send signals from PC to external device through this parallel port with the addr
    ess 278h (which
is Data lines) and it works fine. We also tried using reading 4bit data from external
device to PC through this port with the address 279h (which is Status lines) and it
    is also working fine.
But it was not possible for us to read through Control lines whose address is 27Ah. Whereas when line printer (dot matrix printer) was
connected, it was possible for us to take print out. Thus printer was working. This
informed us that the control lines are all OK!
Can you please clarify, how to use both control lines and status lines to read 8 bit data through this parallel port using the Labview software.

There are several Knowledge Base entries about this on the NI site, but probably the most detailed document is on the Advanced Measurements (www.advmeas.com) website. Try looking at this page, I think you will find it useful.

  • Send bit to parallel port

    Hello LV community,
I am sending bits to my parallel port to communicate with my ASIC but I have an issue to enter some test modes which require to send simultanously for example 3 bits at the same time into 3 pins  to the port, I can seen from the scope that there are some delays between them (aprox.20 us).
My question is, this delays is it due to the PC performance or the way to send them? I am using the Out Port8.via for thi purpose. Is there any solution for this issue?
    Thx

    Hi,
I don't really know your program but maybe you a better of with a Digital I/O board to avoid these delays. Most people use these boards to control there parallel port at high speed by directly accessing the pins. Don't forget that when you are using Port In and Port Out that you are still using software calls and you are dependant on PC performance.

  • Using XP software with a parallel port dongle in windows 7 professional

Please help...  Looking to have my parallel port dongle recognized for my older version software (XP) in Windows 7 under the XP PC mode.  Help in figuring out if LPT1 is set correctly or what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I have W7 Professional 64 bit with Windows Virtual PC/Windows XP Mode installed. I have some older programs installed in XP Mode and they are working properly.
Unfortunately, I have one older program that I currently have working on an older XP Machine and that program requires a Sentinel dongle to be seen on the LPT1 Parallel Port. Since my W7 computer has an LPT1 Header on the mother board, I have purchased and
installed a PCI-Express Parallel Port and I have the ribbon cable connected to the LPT1 Header.
After I enabled the parallel port in the bios, I could see LPT1 in the W7 Device Manager and in the Windows XP Mode Device Manager. However, when I click on
Windows Virtual PC, highlight Windows XP Mode.vmcx and click on Settings, LPT1 does not appear.
I have installed my old program in Windows XP Mode and it starts to run but, when it gets to the point where it must see the Sentinel dongle on the LPT1, the
program does not find the dongle.
I also purchased a Manhattan MHUSB to DB25 Parallel Converter and plugged it in. It said that it found new hardware and installed drivers for it but that didn’t
    work either.
I am not married to any particular solution. So, I would use a USB Adapter or LPT1 connected to the mother board but there must be some code editing or changes
in settings to make the dongle work in XP Mode.
Can you tell me how to get W7 Professional 64 bit with Windows Virtual PC/Windows XP Mode to find the Sentinel dongle
    on LPT1?
    Thank you,
    Dan

  • Parallel port to usb cables

    Hi guys,
I just bought a new PC for my parents (Dell Inspiron, Merry Christmas...), and realized only this morning that it doesn't have a parallel port to support their antique laser printer (which still works well).
I did a quick search and found these Parallel Port to USB cables:
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ … &CatId=471
    http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/Produ … ct=2608263
I prefer the latter because tiger direct charge way too much for shipping and there's a The Source in town here.
Will these work with Linux -- they claim its seamless, but I can imagine cups possibly getting confused if it expects a parallel port and gets USB? Any idea how they work?
Also, the printer is from 1994, will it work with a IEEE-1284 parallel port, or were they using EPP or something else back then?
I could also get a PCI parallel port adaptor, but you've probably heard my horror stories every time I open a case. ;-)
    Thanks for any advice!
    Dusty

I was just given an old Canon BJC-1000 printer with a parallel to USB adapter today. Cups does find the printer and will print on it. My only problem so far is that the page is shrunk down to about 1/16 of its original size! It's very funny but not real convenient.
    Edit
Never mind that. It works!!! Readjusted everything in the CUPS config, restarted my application, and all is well.

  • Adapter for parallel-port???

Hello! I have purchased an Apple Studio Display to use with my PowerBook G4 and my old Blue/White G3. Unfortunately I can't seem to use it with my Blue/White G3 which I have my wonderful and expensive Agfa Arcus II scanner attached to, and have already ditched my old dinosaur monitor. The scanner has a 25 pin parallel-port that I would like to be able to use on my PowerBook G4. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

You need a USB-to-parallel cable, like one of these:

  • No longer able to use non-apple lightning to 30 pin adapter cable with IOS 8

Do any of you use an Apple iDevice with a digital transport docking station to get your music from your device to your speakers using an external DAC?
I have an Onkyo ND-S1 which was great when using my iPhone 4S plugged into the dock sending digital audio through to my active speakers with built in DAC….
But since upgrading to an iPhone 6, running IOS 8.1.1 which has a lightning port, I purchased an aftermarket ‘lightning to 30-pin female adapter cable’ to continue using the dock with my new iPhone.
It doesn’t work. The adapter is not approved by Apple and somehow they have managed to bork all non-apple cables, ie it won’t charge, it won’t send digital audio. It’s essentially useless. Now, this is a cable that was manufactured & marketed specifically to allow iDevices with a lightning port to connect to digital transport docks, and I believe that it used to work with IOS 7.x, but it appears that with the rollout of IOS 8.x, Apple has done something that renders all non-apple cables redundant.
Apple sell their own £30 adapter cable, but that has its own DAC built in to the unit – now stupid question time: If I used one of these cables, would it (a) Do nothing, just like the non-apple cable, (b) Convert the audio to analogue, then send the converted audio to the speakers (by analogue cable only), resulting in a lower quality reproduction?  Or (c) Would it bypass the DAC in the cable and send the digital signal to the speakers?
Does anybody have any experience of this?

If the 3rd party adapter doesn't work it is because it is a counterfeit device The manufacturer has failed to licence the lightning technology from Apple ergo it does not work
Of course the Applr product will work ,infact most of the copies in very very small prin tsay in advert it does not support sound intended for charging only

  • I have a 2011 mini with usb connector when I attempt to connect my nano I get the message that I do not have the correct adapter cable. I got the correct adapter cable from the Mini dealer. Any suggestions?

I cannot get my Mini Cooper to sync up with my nano thru the USB port. When I hook up with the cable that came with the Nano, it acknowledges that it is an Ipod however it displays the message that I do not have the correct cable.  When I use the audtio adapter cable from BMW it doesn't see the Nano at all. Has anyone else had the issue and what did you do to over come it  I tried my nano in another persons car (a Ford) and it worked with no issue.

This can sometimes be the result of a faulty/damaaged USB sync cable.  Do you have another cable you could test it out with?

  • Parallel port updating with labview

I have a project to do that I will need to control using the parallel port. The problem is that I will need to use more than one pin at a time. An example is, when I press button 1, data pin1 and data pin3 will send a signal, and when I press button 2, data pin2 and data pin4 will send s signal and data pin1 and 3 will stop.
I tried doing that but stopped at the programming stage.
I have attached the file I've just did, and I would be most grateful if you kindly pointed me on how to configure this problem.
note: am using win2000 and the parallel port is working fine and i've tried controlling things with it, to make the question more obvious, how could i control the 8 pins and update them as i like. i've read some articles
and answers but didn't understand well since am new to labview

    Hi,
find your vi with working parallel port (values should change). You have made a mistake - do not toggle byte/word, the paraport does not support 16bit. In addition I have attached a radio-button selection-vi; this should give an idea, how to select one of xx buttons; maybe the event structure could do the same job for your case. Unfortunately I don't have the time to deliver a complete solution for you....
Hope this helps already. If you have further questions about paraport - mail simply to my .web-address
You will find it by double-clicking on wha@atmel

  • Using Parallel Port with Outport.vi Problem

    Hello,
I am trying to use my parallel port to control a relay network and have run into a problem. I am using the outport instead of visa because for some reason I get an error with visa and outport seems more simple. The problem I am having is that my program doesn't seem to be able to initially take control of the port. What I mean by this is that if I restart the computer and open/run my program, I get an incorrect output on the parallel port. However, if I run one of the example programs for controlling the paralle port using outport (attached) (I believe the one I use is called Reading and writing to parallel port using loops) I am able to control the output to the parallel port. Also, after the example has run, my program works correctly. However, if I restart my computer again and run my program first it can no longer control the port correctly. So the problem seems to be that my program isn't initializing the port correctly or assessing it right at the beginning of the program. However, looking at the example program I don't really see what they are doing that I am not. I have the correct port address.
My program takes values from a text file and displays them on the port and that works correctly.

Hi Jag213, I'm glad you were able to resolve the issues you discussed on the other forum related to this issue.
Now that you have it working, I would recommend a few things:
    1. Just try modifying one of the existing examples and see what you can get away with removing in order to keep it working the first time.
    2. Try modifying the timing on your example - 10 seconds is a long time to wait between each week, I wonder if you are getting a time out? Do the examples work when you insert that kind of timing delay?
    3. Add the In Port.vi into your code - this may be related to getting your Out Port.vi to work correctly.
    4. Your code controls 8-bits on the parallel port, while the examples control 32-bits. Do all 32 bits need to be initalized? Looking at the Parellel Port Read and Write Loop.vi Example, in the IO Connector Status, the 31st bit controls whether the target is initialized.
Play with these settings and see if you can get yours to work the first. If all else fails, build your program to run off of one of the examples. For example, have the while loop run once, and then call yours as a SubVI.
    Good luck!

  • Using AC adapter to charge is better than charge it with  USB cable?

I've been reading this on http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/
"When possible, always use the AC adapter (or vehicle adapter) for extended charging, not a FireWire cable attached to a computer."
The artical does not explain why, but I'm curious about it.
So, does charging iPod with USB cable really damage the battery?
Is it always better to charge iPod with AC adapter?
Any answer will be appreciated, thanks in advance anyway

Even if you use an a/c adaptor you still need the usb cable to connect it to the iPod. The very same cable you use to connect to the computer.
A firewire cable is something completely different, and although the 5th gen iPod will charge via a firewire cable they are not supplied with the iPod (because the iPod won't accept data transfer via firewire).
When reading about the iPod battery, you should remember that there is an awful lot of nonsense said. I've never found any difference whatsoever either charging via a mains adaptor or via a computer.
