Attaching USB HD to Time Capsule

I've been using a 1TB external HD to Time Machine my new MacBookPro and all is fine.
Recently, I bought a dualband Time Capsule.
After I attach the USB HD I can see the Time Machine partition of the HD, and I can select it using Time Machine and get it to backup - but it looks like it'll back up from scratch.
However, before I get too far ahead...
...Can I get TM to continue the backups from when I last did it, or do I have to start from fresh ??
...If I copy my TM backups to the Time Capsule HD, can I continue the backups ??
Can it be done ??
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for that.
I should be able to partition the USB HD, so that I can keep the old backups in 1 partition and use the new partition for new backups - correct ??
Not an ideal solution, but lets me keep old backups until they become obsolete.
Yes. The new ones will be in a sparse bundle.
In a similar vein, i should be able to do something similar for my girlfriend's Time Capsule and her laptops...
...She's using an external HD for backups for laptop1, and a new TC for backups for laptop2 - but we can't "add" the USB HD backups to the TC, it'll have to be started from scratch for the laptop1.
Also right. There will be two separate sparse bundles, one for each Mac.
I'm surprised no-ones worked out a way around this situation, as I'm sure it must be quite common.
Common, yes, but apparently the difference is so fundamental that there's not much us mere mortals can do. Part of it is the unique and complex structure of TM backups, employing "multi-links." Any attempt to mess with them just breaks things, corrupting the backups.

  • Attach usb drive to time capsule

I have been attempting to SEE the HD attached to the USB port on the TC.  It DID work previously until I had to factory reset the TC.  Now, it doesn't show.  Any suggestions?
I've been to the Disks tab and the File Sharing box is checked.
    Stumped.

Plug the usb drive into the mac.. can you read it??
Plug it back into the TC.. if it disaapears it can be due to USB drawing too much power.. TC is severely underpowered.. and even a powered disk can have issues.
It can be firmware update that happened. If the TC is now on 7.6.3, go back to 7.6.1 or even better 7.5.2
It can be format of the drive.. if it won't show in the airport utility it won't show in the computer.
Retry with a USB hub.. make sure the disk is formatted HFS+ and partitioned using GUID type.

  • Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?

Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?
    I have a iMac with 10.7.4

I want to back up the data on the external Hard Drive that is attached to the Time Capsule to the Tim Capsule using Time Machine.
Thanks for the clarification.  Unfortunately, that will not work.  You will need to connect the drive directly to your Mac if you want Time Machine to backup the drive to the Time Capsule.

  • Time machine - backup of a disk attached via usb on a time capsule

    Hi,
I would like to know it is possible to backup data with TIME MACHINE of an external disk attached directly to a time capsule via USB.
I use it as a network disk for all my Mac's to access at the same iphoto library.
Thank you very much for your help

To back up the drive, connect it directly to the Mac and remove it from the exclusion list in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • Problems attaching RAID volume to Time Capsule USB

I just got an Icy Dock RAID enclosure and two discs to go with it. I want to attach it to my time capsule and use it as both a network disc and as another back up disc adding extra capacity to my Time Capsule.
I set the dip settings on the back of the enclosure (necessary or not I don't know) and plugged it directly into my laptop. I opened up Apple's disc utility and created a RAID volume. That new RAID volume mounted and I could even go into Time machine setup and see it as a choice for a backup volume. So far so good but I still want the connivence of my wireless backups.
So I ejected the enclosure and plugged it into the Time Capsule's USB connection. It didn't show up as a backup volume or as a network drive. Going into the disc tab of the Time Capsule setup utility I do see the two drives within the enclosure but have no option to erase them or mount them. They just show up as their raw selves as if I hadn't even initialized them into the raid partition.
Now if I dismount the enclosure and plug it back into my computer and break apart the raid volume into two separate discs and plug it back into the time capsule I see each of those appear both as a network volume and an option for backup.
Now of course I could use it that way but I'd prefer to have some redundancy that's why I got the enclosure in the first place. Any ideas how I can get the RAID volume to mount? Or somehow get redundancy using the two discs? If it requires command line instructions I'm OK with that I just don't have any idea of where to start.
    Thanks,
    peat

So just in case somebody else runs into this problem I wanted to post what I discovered. I had to reformat the drives I installed in the enclosure. Once I did that they were seen as separate drives by my computer and by the time capsule.
I did what I shouldn't have done which is use software to create a RAID drive. These software created RAID drives don't mount on the time capsule as the following thread notes.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9996146
What I should have done and eventually did do is format the drives correctly, set the dip switches for RAID 1, push the reset button on the back of the RAID enclosure and create a hardware RAID device. This hardware device now looks and feels like one drive. It mounts up as a network drive on the time capsule no problem.
Furthermore now that it's a visible network drive I can select it in time machine preferences and use it as my destination drive for time machine backups. It hasn't fully backed up yet but it certainly seems to be working so I think this would contradict the previous post. I am able to hang a drive off my time capsule and "extend" the capacity of my time capsule. I didn't copy over the sparse bundle file so time capsule's starting all over again but I suspect I could have copied it and continued with incremental backups.

  • My PC cannot see a hard drive connected by usb to my Time Capsule!

    Help please.
My PC cannot see my Toshiba hard drive connected by usb to my Time Capsule. I can see the hard drive in Airport Utility. I suspect my problem may be to do with either setting up File Sharing or else mapping............if anyone can help fix this it would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Wins server is useless.. you won't have one..
Did you turn on the guest account with full read and write permissions.. ??
Can you ping the TC ip address??
Is the airport utility on the windows machine??
Do you have a mac to access the drive?
Is it real fat32 or some strange exfat which won't work?
I also wonder if it should not be formatted on directly on the TC.. or on a Mac and formatted GUID not windows type.
Sorry not all of this is logical..
If you can access the internal disk from windows.. how are you doing that??
If the external USB drive is not working.. plug it straight into the windows machine and enjoy faster better and more consistent file copying..
Share it to the network if you want network access.

  • USB printing through Time Capsule from Ipad or iphone

I connected my printer thru the USB of my Time Capsule, and I can print wirelessly from my iMac, but my iPhone and my iPad do not see the printer. It has to be air printing enable or is there other way to do it?
    Thanks!!

The bottom line here is the mobile devices use a different operating system than a Mac computer.

  • Moved drive to USB Port on Time Capsule and TM no longer sees backups

I moved my FireWire attached HD from a direct attachment to my Mac Pro to attached via the USB port on my Time Capsule. Time Machine now wants to start over, and does not see the previous backups.
The destination drive name did not change, other than the added NAS address.
Is there a way to force TM to use the previous backup set incrementally instead of starting over?
    Thx

unfortunately, it's not that simple. TM treats backups to directly attached drives differently vs. networked ones.

  • USB drive to Time Capsule : slooooow

    Hello,
I have a Time Capsule with a WD usb drive attached to it (FAT32).
My Macbook is connected via ethernet to the Time Capsule for max speed.
When I copy a 700MB file to the Time Capsule, it takes about 6 minutes.
When I copy the same file to the drive attached to the TC, it tells me it's going to take 7 HOURS !
    What is the problem???
Please tell me there's a simple answer
    Best

    Couple of thoughts:
The Time Capsule's USB port would be a lot happier to see a drive format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled), although FAT 32 may work if you don't exceed a 4 GB file size.
Although the message says it will take 7 hours, did you actually make a copy to confirm this? If you did not, the only way to will know if it will really take that long is to make the copy. It could be much less.
If you don't already have any valuable data on the disk, I would suggest that you re-format it using MAC OS Extended (Journaled). Might also be a good idea to Verify Disk and Repair Permissions if indicated using Disk Utility.

  • How to backup external USB drive to Time Capsule

I have a USB drive I have connected to the Time Capsule which I use to store my itunes and iphoto libraries.
Is there a way to get this disk to be backed up using Time Machine to the Time Capsule?
I also have an Airport Express but I don't believe its supported to use that as a disk server so wondering how to get the disk backed up using Time Machine.
    Thanks

no. TM will not backup airdisks. see this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018#2.
ChronoSync, on the other hand, should be able to do that.

  • How do I connect a Canon Selphy CP900 using the USB port on Time Capsule

I am running a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and have installed the CP 900 driver (6.2) supplied by Canon from their website.  I have a Time Capsule set up as a stand alone internal network at my home and use it as a network attched hard drive directly - not via Time Machine.  I can "see" the printer when I connect but cannot print to it.    I open a photo in preview and select the printer and print.
    I get a
    Cannin Selphy CP Generic
connection method not supported message - 9786
The printer does show up in my Print and Scan control panel in System Preferences
I also cannot reach it to check suplies
At the print it dsiplays the printer to computer connection via USB
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Asa

    Hi Asa,
I experienced the same error -9786 although I'm not using the time capsule, but only through the wifi.
I did following and resolved the problem.
    1. I re-installed the driver software.
    2. I re-configured the printer settings. (System Preferences - Printers and Scanners - "+" button)
    3. I didn't add the selphy manually, but just I just input "CP" in the searchbox in "Add" dialog, and clicked "OK" button then the printer is set automatically.
    4. I tried pringing a photo from iPhoto and could print correctly.
it looks like the key action is #2 and #3 above, so why don't you give a try?

  • How to use an iPhoto library, stored on an external HD connected via USB to a Time Capsule ?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15", connected to a Time Capsule.
My iPhoto library is stored on an external HD, connected to the Time Capsule via USB.
I want to sync my photos with my iPhone (iOS 7.1)
The issue is that iTunes can't display anything in the "photos" tab, within the iPhone section in iTunes.
The search icon is turning, turning, even for hours, and then impossible to activate the sync between iPhoto and the iPhone.
What I do not understand, is that it works very well when the same HD is connected directely to my MacBook via USB.
Why is the sync impossible when the HD is connected to the Time Capsule ?
I have been told that storing an iPhoto library on a network HD is not recommended by Apple, but it seems to work for many users, according to forums.
So I would grant the feedback from users that have a similar configuration to mine.
    Thanks
    Stéphane

Hmm, well you experience rather contradicts the forums, no? iPhoto is not designed for network access, end of story. If you try use it that way then things fail.
    See this article

“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

  • Cannot print from Canon MF4412 through USB port of Time Capsule

    Hi everyone,
I've recently purchased a new Canon imageCLASS MF4412 and cannot print while connected to the USB port of the time capsule. I can print and scan perfectly when connected directly to the mac.
This is the exact steps I took:
1.After connecting the usb cable to the back of Time capsule, I go to the sys pref pane to add a printer.
2.It shows up as a 'Bonjour' and I had to manually select the driver.
3.It added fine and I thought everything was setup.
4.However, when i go to print something, there's an error. "Canon URF II Printer Driver"
"Cannon communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again. Then, if the Print Dialog box has a [Printer Info] button, acquire the printer information: 10322"
    Anybody know of a solution?
    Thanks.

I got a similar problem on MF4412, the canon 4412 is connected the newest airport extreme , it get configured. But I got same problem described about on my leopard, lion, even worst on iOS, it does not find the printer. But I got a Windows 7 starter NetBook ...haha it works, I can print it from Windows. what is the problem then,it works on Windows but not Apple's OS??????

  • Can I access multiple USB printers through Time Capsule?

I just bought a Time Capsule, and I'm loving having my USB laser printer available on my Airport Network. In fact, I'm loving it so much that I'd like to have my USB photo printer available as well.
Is it possible to have multiple printers available through the Time Capsule connected to a USB hub?

    Bingo! It worked, many thanks!
I wish I could remember which associate at my Apple Store said it wasn't possible; that he'd tried every way he could think of short of hacking the Time Capsule.
You've really helped increase the utility of my network, and I appreciate it.
    Happy Holidays!

  • USB HD in Time Capsule do not work

    Hi
    Sorry, my english is bad.
I have connected a LaCie USB 2 HD to my Time Capsule. Airport Utilityrecognizes it, but the Finder and Time Machine can not access, show nothing of it.
I do not remember if it is formatted FAT32 or NTFS, but I understand that should be accessible even readonly.
    Any ideas?
    Greetings and thanks

    Hi Bob
I understand, NTFS is supported readonly when the HD is connected directly (wired) to the Mac, but with Time Capsule not, right?
The HD has a power supply.
    Thanks
