Attaching USB hub to Aiport Express

I'm considering the purchase of an Airport Express and was just curious as to whether I could plug a USB hub into the USB port and then connect multiple printers?

If I plug in my USB 2.0 external Hard Drive to the Airport express's USB port will this drive now be a NAS?
No.

  • Multiple Printers on USB Hub with Airport Express

I have been testing all day and I think my question is already answered. However, I would like to confirm with the gurus in here: Can AE be hooked up to a powered 4 port USB hub to which three printers are connected?
In the hardwired situation, there seems to be no problem. All three individual printers are recognized by Printer Setup Utility on the computer to which the USB hub is attached. When I attach the USB hub to the AE and restart the hub, only the first (closest to the USB out cable) is recognized, no matter which one I place in that first socket. And only that first one is seen over the wireless network.
I was looking for a way to allow other computers in the house to be able to utilize these three different speciality printers (labelmaker, DVD printer and LaserWriter), without having to have the connected computer always on as host.
Any suggestions would be appreciated-short of buying two more Airport Express units.

Can AE be hooked up to a powered 4 port USB hub to which three printers are connected?
Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can only accept a single USB printer. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107857)

  • Using USB hubs on airport express

I discovered that by using an airport express with the 802.11n network (most recent update model as of this post) is capable of using a third party USB hub for multiple printers. I have an all in one EPSON as well as a wide format EPSON and two DYMO thermal printers. All work fine using the Kensignton PocketHub 7-Port USB which includes an AC adaptor to power devices. I previously had an older Airport express on 802.11g network that could only handle a single printer and was NOT able to support the USB hub. I hope this helps anyone that is searching for network solutions.

    Hi spwolfman,
Thanks for posting this, this is exactly what I was needed to know, as I need to make 2 usb-based printers wireless.
    I have 3 addtional questions........
    1) You mentioned you have a powered USB hub. Do you need a powered hub to make this work?
    2) Are there any special settings that need to be made to get this to work, or is it straightforward in the airport setup utility?
    3) I have a Linksys Wireless-G hub, will the 802.11n airport express work with this hub?
    Thanks

  • Possible/Safe to use a usb hub on Airport Express?

I'm about to purchase my second external hard drive for backups and I was wondering if it is safe/plausable/possible to plug a usb hub into the USB port of the Airport Express to connect my two hard drives (and maybe a printer) to connect all three of these devices to my local network? Has anyone tried this? I'd to know before I get the usb hub

Unfortunately, the AirPort Express will not support a hard drive connected to its USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.
So, while you could connect a powered USB hub to the AirPort Express, it would only function correctly with multiple printers.
To support a hard drive, you would need an AirPort Extreme.

  • Can I attach USB drive to Airport Express USB port

I would like to attach a USB drive to my Apple airport Express USB port so that I can back up my data on my MBP and have my music stored on it for playing back over Apple TV.
Is there any issues to doing this? As an example, how would I see the drive?
    thanks in advance.
    Adam

Well, you can certainly attach a USB drive to the port on the AirPort Express.....but nothing will happen if you do this....since the USB port on the Express will only support a compatible printer and Keyspan remote control.
You will need an AirPort Extreme if you want to attach a shared hard drive to the USB port.

  • Can i connect USB hub to airport express

can i connect USB hub to my airport express & sharing 2 or more printer with one airport express ?!!

It works for me, but I cannot predict if it will for you.
Be sure to try a powered USB that has its own power supply.

  • Express + USB Hub + HP Deskjet F380

    Hi,
I've connected an HP Deskjet F380 to a powered USB Hub to an Express but it doesn't seem to be able to communicate. Then, I plugged the Deskjet directly into the Express and that didn't work either. I have plugged the Deskjet into the Apple Cinema Display and that has worked. I just got a replacement Express from Apple today. Anyone have any ideas?
I didn't install the HP drivers for the Deskjet. Do you think that will make a difference?
    Thanks.

Not every printer is compatible. You might want to check www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html and try some of the suggestions there.

  • Can I use Airport Express to connect to a printer, Time Machine Back up drive, second b/u drive, and scanner through a USB hub? if so, how?

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized.  I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized.  Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro?  If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?
    Thanks,
    Doug Earle

Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post.

  • Attach Ethernet dongle via USB hub?

Hi. I'm getting a new MBA at work and the only reservation I have is the single USB port. Can the Ethernet dongle be plugged into a USB hub, or does it have to go straight into the port on the laptop? Does i tmatter if the hub is powered or not?
    Thanks for any help.

You should be able to use the USB Ethernet adapter on a USB hub. The hub needs to be USB2 (not the slower USB1.) I don't know if the hub needs to be powered or not, but in the past, I've had trouble with non-Apple USB Ethernet adapters on non-powered hubs. [This thread from a few days ago|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2497134&tstart=0] was from someone with issues using the adapter with a hub, although he has not posted his final results yet.
If you can't find a compatible hub, perhaps you can use a Wi-Fi access point. It's like a typical home router, but just the wireless part. In essence you'll have a "wireless" ethernet adapter for your Macbook Air, instead of a USB adapter. Some companies internal policies do not allow wireless networking so you may have to check with your network administrator.
Some consumer home routers can be configured as an access point (a.k.a. bridged.) If you don't need to take the "ethernet adapter" with you on the road, then you can just get a non-portable access point. Otherwise something like an [Airport Express|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fn ode=MTY1NDEyMQ&mco=MTA4NzI4ODU]. Other companies have similar products. I used the [dLink DWL-G730AP] in my pre-Macbook days. I believe dLink has [a faster one now|http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=753].

  • XP Shutdown hangs when USB hub attached :(

I recently bought a Lenovo 3000 N500 notebook (running XP) , and love it. One slight problem though, I have a Belkin F5U271 USB Hub plugged into it all the time, on my desk, and everytime I shut down with it attached, I get as far as 'Windows is shutting Down...' and it just stays there, the fans stop, theres no hdd activity, and it doesnt happen if the hub is detached. I'm assuming its to do with phantom power through the USB, but any thoughts you guys?

I have the same problem when I leave my expresscard34 multimedia reader in the expresscard34 slot in my T400s with XP SP3.
    please advise.

  • MacBook won't boot with USB hub attached

My new MacBook stalls during the boot process when my powered, 4-port USB 2.0 hub is attached. If I unplug it from the USB port, OS X continues to successfully boot up.
Is this a known issue? The same hub works fine with my PowerBook G4.
    Thanks.
    MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo | iPod 5G 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yeah, I've already tried that. Much thanks for the reply, though.
It boots fine once the hub is unplugged. I'm just too lazy to remember to unplug the thing every time I start my MacBook. And, I'm generally annoyed because it all worked okay with my PowerBook G4.
So, anyone with a MacBook that boots up fine with a USB hub connected, what kind do you have? I need a recommendation.
    Thanks.

  • Laptop not powering off with powered usb hub attached

I have an external powered USB hub which I have attached to my G60 running Windows 7 Home Premium. When I try to shut down the G60 with the hub attached and powered on, the shutdown sequence goes through Logging Off to Shutting Down but never fully powers off. The power and wireless lights stay on and the fan continues to run.
Is there a way around this apart from powering off the USB hub before shutdown?
    This question was solved.

    Hi @Andrew_c51 ,
I saw your post regarding the problems with your notebook not shutting down all the way when the powered USB hub is connected. It almost sounds like your notebook is going into sleep or hibernation. I would recommend contacting the manufacturers of the powered USB to see if there is a way of stopping this or just disconnect the hub.

  • USB hub attached AEBS

I want to connect a USB external drive to my AEBS. But after connecting my USB printer to a USB hub which is connected to my AEBS, when I try to print I nothing happens. When I checked the print status the message was "Looking for printer....." "printer offline". Am I missing something?

    Welcome to the discussions, David!
I want to connect a USB external drive to my AEBS. But after connecting my USB printer to a USB hub which is connected to my AEBS, when I try to print I nothing happens.
I am assuming here that the printer worked when you had it connected directly to the USB hub on the AEBS, is that correct?
Does the USB hub have it's own power supply? You will need a powered hub for your setup.
If you do have a powered hub, have you power cycled the network?
If not, power everything down...modem, AEBS, devices, computers, order is not important.
Wait a few minutes and start the modem and let it run by itself for a few minutes. Then start the AEBS the same way. Continue starting each device the same way until everything is powered back up.
    What are your results?
