  • File extension not changing when Save as

    Hi!
I have a strange problem. For example; I have a .psd file open and want to save it as a .jpg file. I choose Save as. The dialogue Save as opens and displays the file name. But when I choose jpg as File format the extension behind the File name doesn't change from .psd to .jpg. I have to manually change it. It's the same with other file extensions.
Is this a bug? I experience the same problem on two different installations.
I use Creative Suite 4, Photoshop version 11.0.1.
    Fredrik

No, I have the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" disabled. The file name is "name.psd". No double extensions.
I also have tried to change the Photoshop setting "File extensions: uppercase/lowercase" but it's the same.
I think I got the problem when I upgraded from CS3 to CS4. After that I've also upgraded Photoshop to 11.0.1. It's also strange that I'm having the same problem on two differnet installations.

  • File Extension Always Changes from .mp4 to .m4z in Media Encoder CS6 Master Collection

    Hello,
I am a noob to Adobe products, but I am familiar with video encoding and have been making movies on the computer for over a decade.  I have made several attempts to encode from .wmv to .mp4, but both Media Encoder as well as Premiere creates the output with the .m4v extension.  I am using the H.264 Main, with the MP4 Standard selected in the multiplexer.  I have watched several video tutorials from YouTube on how to make sure I format properly for YouTube in MP4, but I would prefer my file extension to be .mp4 and NOT .m4v.  The name is specified as "video.mp4" but it always comes out as "video.m4v".
I am using the full version (not a trial) of Adobe Creative Suite CS6 Master Collection, Student and Teacher Addition.
    Windows 7 64-bit
Before I give all my other pertinent details, or post screen shots (if that is possible), I thought there might be a simple solution.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance

Ok, I found the temporary solution over at this forum posting:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4717820#4717820.
Over there, I posted this information:
I will have to try keeping the Export Audio box checked.  I am having the same .m4v problem when trying to save as mp4, and my videos have no audio (screen capture tutorials) so I chose not to export the audio.  I will see if keeping the box checked works.
I am using Windows 7 64-bit, CS6 Master Collection Student Teacher;  I just downloaded the full version (paid for) a couple of days ago, so apparently, this is still a bug.
I had posted this same type of question earlier today, now I found this forum.  I don't know if the problem was there before the update because I just bought my Adobe products the other day (November 10, 2012) and installed the updates prior to even opening any single one of the Adobe programs.  Oddly enough, Handbrake does a fine job, so I am using that until I figure out the problem with AME.
    UPDATE:
YES!  Keeping that Export Audio box checked resolved the problem.  What I did was (since there was no audio in the original) just take the audio settings down to the lowest possible quality so as to save on file size output.
    Thanks for the pointer!

  • Email attached file extension ashx instead of doc or docx

The email attachments are Word documents -- doc or docx. When the download box appears the document is labeled as attachment.ashx instead of the document name with the docx ending. Must then browse through the program files to Microsoft office to properly open the file. The original file name is lost.

  • Changing the file extension by entering a "?" in JFileChooser

    Hi,
I've encountered a weird thing in JFileChooser. If you open the chooser, type at least one "?" in the field for the filename and then hit the approve button, the file extension will change to the text you entered as the filename.
To reproduce this problem, simply launch the JWSFileChooserDemo hit the "Open a File..."-button and as the filename enter something like "?deadbeef". Now click the open button and you will see that the file extension changes to "?deadbeef".
This is a really strange behaviour in my opinion.
I'm using Windows 7 with java 6u16, but the issue is the same on windows xp sp3. Perhaps on linux too. I'll give it a try as soon as I can.
Has anyone else encountered that problem?
    Best regards
Edited by: Wurstsalat on Mar 23, 2010 10:30 AM

To reproduce this problemThis is not a problem but rather a feature. I did not know of this till now. Thanks for informing.
As Kevin pointed out this is related to filtering of files.
?deadbeefThis will match all the files which start with any letter followed by "deadbeef". So, ? is a wildcard meaning any one character. Other wildcard can be *, which means any number of characters. Try this:
    *.txt
    a*.txt
    *.jp*g
??.txt I don't know other wildcards...
    Thanks!

  • Importing photos without a file extension name?

I am running Mac Tiger w/ 1.5gig ram. I am using 1.3.1 V Lightroom. I am trying to import 4000 or so .tif photos that I scanned about 8 years ago and did not save the file name as .tif. I am guessing that is why light room will not recognize them and tells me no photos are found when I navigate to the folder. I am hopping someone can tell me how to make this work without having to re-name or add .tif to all of these scans manually? If I can not do this through Lightroom, is there any way in Photoshop to add the .tif file extension automatically?
    Thanks,
    Cathy

Why not just rename them all? It would only take a second.
Oh...I don't know how to do it on a Mac, but it's cake on a PC so I assume it is on Mac as well.

  • Photoshop will no longer automatically change file extension when I do a "save as".

I have just now been to Preferences to make desired settings for needed grid lines.  Now Photoshop 9 will no longer automatically change the file extension when I do a "save as".  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about this?  I am using a Mac.  Thank you.

Are you still facing the issue, can you try deleting preferces and then try it.
If still get no succes please lemme know the scenario you are using for saving file.

  • Mistakenly change file extension while in disk use mode

I made the mistake of changing the file extension of a file on my Nano (5G) while it was in "disk use" mode. When I unplugged the device and later plugged it in, the modified file was gone. Does the Nano treat unrecognized files as non-existant? I tried using Windows Explorer to find the file, but nothing was there. Also, the overall memory used on the Nano has decreased by what I would guess is the same amount as the missing file. I'd like to get my file back. Any suggestions?

Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • Quicktime automatically adding file extension?!

I use Quicktime for all my video playback - so i'm assuming my problem lies with this?
I do VJing and when I'm downloading video clips (non-mpg4) i.e. avi, flv etc - the downloaded files are adding a '.mpg' extension onto the file - so that it wont playback automatically in quicktime. For example a file downloaded called '1234.avi' ends up in my download/desktop folder as '1234.avi.mpg'?
The problem means I have to manually alter each file name deleting the .mpg file extension (and confirming each time that I want to change it) - so it will load in quicktime. I'm assuming it may be because I have ticked the box on 'always open this file type with quicktime' - which is what I want, but how do I stop it adding the file extension each time?

Thanks for your help. I wasn't aware you could disable that alert in the finder? I'll have to look at doing that.
Whilst I take your comments on board - are you suggesting that Safari (web browser being used) - is adding the file extension on download?

  • When i get an email with an attachment file it always get saved. Is there a way to not automatically save the attachment?

When I get an email with a file attachment it is automatically saved to the hard drive. Is there a way to stop that from happening?

To change that setting go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>"Advanced" box over in the upper right side of the window>in the line below that that says "Keep Copies of Messages for Offline Viewing:",click on the drop down arrows at the right end of that box just below it and select the phrase "All Messages, but Not Attachments".  It looks like this:

  • HELP! I lose original file name when changing folders or extensions

I'm confused!  Didn't used to be a problem, but now, when I 'save as' and change either the original file location or the file extension (eg PSD to JPG) the file name changes to ".jpg"  Any ideas would help!!! thanks.

Default format isn't the problem.  I don't think i explained very good, let me elaborate:
Say I have a file named "abcdefg".
I open it, and edit it, add layers etc.
When I choose "save as" the orgianal name of the file appears ("abcdefg") as the "file name", all good here.
This is where the problem occurs: if I
    A) change the folder the file will be saved in
    B) change the format/extension
the file name "abcdefg" is wiped out and the file is automatically renamed ".JPG" or ".PSD" whichever format the orgianl files was (if i'm saving in a different folder) or ".JPG" ".PSD" according to the new format/extension.
This is a problem because i'm working with long complex file names that I'd prefer to not have to manually enter everytime I save.  To make things more frustrating, it wasn't doing this before.  Any info helps, and thanks for the quick response.

  • Save as just started automatically appending file extension -- how to stop

When I do file->save_as  the file name is automatically appended with the file type (ie: .jpg or .tiff). This just started and I do not know why. I do not want this as I am doing a save_as instead of save so I can append some tag info to the name of the file:  file name: foo  and I want to save as foo1. Having to delete the .jpg is annoying and will lead to errors. Why did this start and how do I go back to the old way it worked? I updated nothing when this started.
    thanks Ry

    Thanks Benjamin,
Part of your description is correct. Old way of working:
do save as: get filename without any extension
If I change the file type (as you mentioned) then the file extension is added.
So if I saved a jpg file and then I am working on a raw file and want to save it as a tiff I would do a save as. save as wants to save the file in the format previously saved in. So when making the change I first change the file name (which is easier without the extension present and then I change the file type, which then adds the new extension.
having the extension added coming in is what has changed and is really annoying.
I would like to thank all for the answers so far, hopefully there is a way to get back to the original behaviour, which by the way has been working that way for years.
    thanks ry

  • Can I set up e-mail to automatically download attached files from a trusted source

can I set up e-mail to automatically download attached files from a trusted source to a desktop folder?  Can't find the option (if one exists) in "Rules."

Have you checked Mail > Preferences > General > Downloads folder - change that to desktop. That should do it (that is my setting and it works here).

If that file is an FLV file then Firefox should save it as such and not change the file extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
