Attachments appear as  text

When I am sent an attachment that is a video or picture when I click on it "textedit" appears and all I receive is garbled text or "Movie cannot be opened". Why is this happening? The "Movie cannot be opened" has always appeared but since I installed Leopard I get the garbled text.

In most cases, the movie is labeled with a file extension, such as .wmv. The full file name would be: NewMovie.wmv.
If that's the type of file you're seeing, installing Flip4Mac may help: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

  • E-mail attachments appear as viewable page- want icon only

    I send many e-mails a day with word and pdf attachments to them, to clients.  Two things I struggle with and hope to solve.
    1- I use the Mac mail system.  When I attach a document, sometimes only the icon shows, and sometimes the whole page shows.  From reading other posts, it looks like if the attachment is only 1 page, the whole page shows on my screen.  I DO NOT want that.  I print my e-mails for my files and when the whole page shows, an e-mail that should be 1/2 a page turns into a 4-page e-mail.  A waste of paper and space in my files.  How do I make all the attachments appear as icons?  I have tried right click, "show as icon" and that makes only the icon show on the screen, but when I print the e-mail, the entire page of 1-page attachments print (although smaller), making the e-mail way too long.  HELP!
    2- is there a way, when I attach files, for them to appear in a separate line at the top of the message, like for windows/outlook users?  I absolutely hate that whereever my cursor is at the time I do the attachment, that's where the attachment goes to.  I often compose e-mail and then go back to revise something, forget to move the cursor, attach, have to delete, and go back and reattach.
    Also I get Windows users who get very confused by my e-mails and keep replying and saying there was no attachment.  I don't know where attachments show up on the other end but I'm getting issues with that, too.
    Thank you to any one who can give me solutions!

    This is easy enough to do on any individual message. I think the trick most people are looking for is how to make this a default on ALL messages.

    From that link:
    Turn off automatic attachment preview in Mail
    Mail, by default, provides a preview of attachments in can read, such as graphics and PDF files. However, you can run a command in Terminal to turn this off. Run the following:
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
    Quit Mail and relaunch it. When you view a message, all attachments will be shown as icons only.
    To restore the original functionality, run this command:
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool no

  • Attachments show as text

    It happened to me twice now that I got an email with attachments, I believe both times it was through my .mac account, which makes Mail painfully slow to begin with.
    Anyway, it has this funky behavior of showing a message before the attachments are downloading, so you start seeing the attached content as it downloads, but if you switch to another message and then back to the message with attachments they end up being gone...it's all text.
    In the last case it even "forgot" the sender's name and address in the header.
    It just went blank.
    Well, I guess that's called a bug, but I thought I post it here anyways...

    My only reference to POP was to say that I do not receive many large attachments in my .mac account, and yes, I would NOT expect any problems with your POP accounts.
    My statement about IMAP accounts was made because .mac accounts, set up as .mac type (you can use POP, but .mac is default when setting up) operate in the same way as IMAP accounts. IMAP access in Mail 2.0 is flawed, and with some IMAP servers, attachments, or at least large attachments, simply do not display, and we have found no setting or other change to correct.
    I have not seen the same problem reported, previously, for a .mac account. I would like to know the number of messages in your .mac Inbox, and also what is the size reported for the messages where the attachments show as text?
    I also would like you to test with selecting to NOT save messages and their attachments for Offline viewing -- there is no risk to messages, as they remain on the server, but it could be important to see if this makes any change to your situation.

  • Attachments received as text in Mail

    I have my email set-up as an IMAP account using Mail 3.5 under OS 10.5.6. I am having a reoccurring problem receiving attachments as plain text within the message. It happens with a variety of file types: .jpg, .xls, .igs. Rather than displaying the attached file available for download, the message contains a bunch of scrambled characters. Often, when I have the sender email again, the message displays correctly. I've tried clearing cache, but it does not help. I even re-created the IMAP account within Mail. It seems like others have posted similar problems, but haven't yet found a solution. The weird thing, is I can access the attachment from the IMAP web interface of my host.
    I do have growl mail and mail iconizer, but have tried removing, but it didn't help.
    Any ideas? This is annoying.

    Similar/same problem here.
    Sometimes, the attachments aren't recognized as attachment when downloaded using an IMAP Mail account.
    The fun is that downloading the same message using the terminal the "header" of the attachment is different from that one inside the message downloaded from Mail.
    Here there are the two different attachment's headers.
    FTP downloaded message (and working)
    ------=NextPart_001_020101C9D4AD.FC916EB0--
    ------=NextPart_000_020001C9D4AD.FC916EB0
    Content-Type: application/pdf;
    name="marelago.pdf"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    Content-Disposition: attachment;
    filename="marelago.pdf"
    Mail's downloaded message
    ------=NextPart_001_020101C9D4AD.FC916EB0--
    ------=NextPart_000_020001C9D4AD.FC916EB0
    Content-Disposition: attachment;
    filename=marelago.pdf
    Content-Type: application/pdf;
    name=marelago.pdf
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    Seems that Mail changes this attachment's header.
    There is some Mail setting that I am not able to find or...it's a bug?

  • Buttons just appearing as text for certain clients until enabled with onClick and enabled

    Would anyone know why buttons may disappear for some clients but not others.   I'm not finding a consistent pattern.  When I sign in locally or through vpn they display and behave properly, but when I sign in externally via Chrome or IE 11
    sometime the buttons only appear as text other disable buttons that are enabled on click.  I have a laptop with ie11 Win8 and desktop with ie11 win7.   The laptop displays the buttons proper behavior and the desktop does not.
    anyone have any ideas.  Someone was working on the server recently and I'm wondering if any IIS setting may cause this problem.  Thanks for help!

    <td><asp:Buttonrunat="server"Text="Print"ID="btnPrint"CssClass="tablerowheader"Enabled="False"/>

    Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
     Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode. Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    Hi Guys!
    I'm German, so my english writing might not be perfect
    I had the same Issue on a 5 i bought. Exact same screen and writing. Battery was totally drawn, first thing I had to replace. The screen had been replaced and since then it wouldn't work anymore according to the previous owner.
    It took me a couple hours, after recieving a few errors like 4013 it just never completed the restore, got really hot as well. The Flexwire of the Dock Connector seemed damaged, replaced the dock, but that didn't help.
    I almost gave up, thought the Logic Board was bad.
    BUT! Then i deceided to check if it has anything to do with the Screen assembly, and it did.
    Long story short, on mine the front facing camera, and sensor assy were bad.
    Anyhow, the phone works ''perfect'' when i leave them unplugged. So I just ordered a new one and we will see if thats the problem or if the damage is in the Logic Board.
    If so, i can live without the sensor and front cam.
    Just wanted to share, good luck everyone.

  • Appearance of text/fonts on OS X

    What do people think about the appearance of text/fonts on systems running OS X? As a long-time windows user, I find it might take a little getting used to.

    Believe it or not, I think the latest FreeType interpreter does better, at least when its hint interpreter is enabled. Letterforms are sharper and yet not blocky.
    I should say that when I switched my Linux system from a VGA-driven CRT to a DVI-driven LCD, I had to throw out all my old font settings and start over to get a good subjective result.

  • HT5815 10.8.5: no fix for Mail failure to save attachments in rich text

    How hard is it to do 14 months after ML launched? The fault even goes back to Lion I believe. Pathetic. This discussion refers: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22797910#22797910. I bet the battery level indicator isn't fixed either.

    It is always best not to wait 14 months, or any length of time, before asking a question. I have no problem saving attachments in rich text from Mail. And I haven't even updated my machine to 10.8.5 yet.
    I also don't know what is wrong with the battery level indicator.
    This is a user-to-user support forum. Many of those users are flat out wrong. I'm sorry if you have been led to believe there is some bug with saving e-mail or battery icons and waited 14 months for a bugs fix that never arrived. I suggest starting start from the beginning and describe the problems you are experiencing.

  • TS2928 could someone please tell me how to attach a document to email as an icon that opens....so it does not appear as text in the email??

    could someone please tell me how to attach a document to email as an icon that opens....so it does not appear as text in the email??

    Paste this into Terminal and hit return. If this attachment is text, it should work. Not sure about jpegs.
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing 1
    To reverse the setting, change the 1 to a 0.

  • Attachments appearing as inline text

    Certain attachments that I receive in Mail appear as inline text. This makes it impossible to save the attachment and open it in another program.
    The most aggravating is .cpp files. These contents of these attached files all appear as inline text, one after another. If I want to work with these files, I have to figure out where the division between files is, copy and paste everything before that division into a new file, and fix the formatting line-by-line. How frustrating.
    Please help me stop this behavior, or at least tell me a way to ALSO save the files, or something. Otherwise I'll have to change email clients, and I've gotten so used to Mail.

    Clayton,
    What computer and email client is the sender using to send these to you? I am guessing they are being sent in a message with Rich Text Format, or HTML and becoming "involved"? Some servers might even cause this, especially if SPAM filtering is in force.
    Is the last header about attachments? Is there a black triangle beside this final header, and are there Save and Slideshow buttons?
    More info, please.

  • Mail attachments appear embedded on PCs

    I've tried every diferent setting in mail. ALL my attachments now are embedded in mail emails to clients using Outlook on a PC. Previously, I had to use plain text but it would at least attach properly. C'mon Apple!!!!! Any ideas?
    Steve

    I experienced the same issue - the problem appears to lie with the "content-disposition" field in the message headers. Apple Mail always seems to set this to "inline", regardless of what settings you change ("View as Icon", "Windows-friendly", "Attachments at end" etc.) and, for some reason, Outlook users are unable to save these attached images files.
    Finally, I discovered http://lokiware.info/Attachment-Tamer which is an add-on for Apple Mail and which can force the content-disposition field to "attachment" so the receiving Outlook client is able to save the attachments as normal. I have literally just been testing this myself and it seems to have done the trick.
    I am in no way affiliated with Lokiware and do not gain in any way from promotion of their product - I'm just a very happy user!

  • Receiving attachments as jarbled text in body of email.

    Is there a setting in the Mail preferences that deals with receiving attachments in the body of the email? I have been trying to send an xls. attachment to a Tiger based imac and they get the file as 200 lines of text instead of a file. Is there a setting in the computer that can remedy this?

  • How do I get specific font to ALWAYS appear in text field whether user has font on computer or not?

    I am designing a simple form to be used as template for OTHER people to type up room signs. We would like the signs to be in a specific font that is not generally loaded on the average computer, and we do not want to have to distribute fonts to a gazillion people. My thought was to create a LiveCycle from, whereby the room user could type their name and title in the text fields on the form, and in theory, it would appear in the font I chose for the text field. I have tried various things, but it always gets substituted by the user's computer.
    Tried: Choosing "rich text" for field format in Object palette; choosing "Embed fonts" in "Save Options"; tried static form, tried dynamic form.  It could be that my test user has such an old version of Reader that it just CANNOT work.
    Thanks!

    The restrictions are listed as "normal." And it does appear as embedded when I go to the document properties, though it didn't until I used it for the text on the form (as apposed to just using in the text fields.) And when another user opens the form, the text appears in the specified font, but once they type in the text field, it defaults to different font.
    BTW, it is an Open Type Font, if that makes any difference.
