Attachments-Confused about mail downloads location

It seems that my attachments are located at:
steve/library/mail/[email protected]@mail.xxx.com/INBOX.imapmbox/Attachments/<m anyindividualfolders>
They only move to steve/library/mail downloads
if I press the Quick Look button.
If I press the Save button they go to my designated downloads folder, but it takes quite a while to copy.
Is this normal?
I have mail set to keep all msgs and their attachments for offline viewing.

That depends on how you set up your imap account preferences. In account preferences->advanced there is a scroll button "keep copies of messages for offline viewing". If you set it to "All messages and their attachments" then there will be no significant delay when you press the Save button.
Also in general preferences you can set the option "Remove unedited downloads" to "when Mail quits". This will clear the folder
homedirectory/library/mail downloads of all unedited downloads every time you quit Mail. This has no effect on the copies you downloaded using Save button.
I have mail set to keep all msgs and their attachments for offline viewing.

  • Confused about message downloading and sychronization

I'm new to TB- in the past I have always used a simple web interface. My server is on an IMAP server (Dreamhost)
I've read the "Configuration Options for Downloading Messages" page, but either don't understand it or it doesn't give enough details.
I want to download all my messages stored on my server to my laptop- not just the headers. I'd like to preserve the existing folder configuration that I have on my server. I don't want TB to ever delete any message unless I specifically tell it do so, preferably with confirmation.
My goal is to download all my currently stored messsages and folders, then once I know they are safe on my harddrive I will selectively delete many of them from the server.
I'm not understanding how to make TB do that. It seems it is only downloading headers and I can't see how to make it download the entire message. Also, I don't quite want what I think it considers sychronization- if I delete a message on the server I don't necessarily want TB to delete that message locally. How else could I archive my messages locally?
in other words, I want all my messages to be stored locally, and only some of them left on the server.
For instance, I place three emails into a folder on my server. I quit that
connection, then invoke Icedove on my laptop. If I click on that folder it
then retrieves and displays those three emails (or just the headers?).
If I then quit Icedove and return to my web based email and remove those
three emails from the server, I expect those three emails to stay on my
local machine. Yet when I invoke Icedove again, it sees that the three emails are
gone from the server and subsequently removes them from display....
So, does this mean that the messages were never actually retrieved
locally? Or is Icedove removing the local copies in order to synchronize
    with the server?
Here are the settings I am using:
under "Copies & Folders" -> keep message archives in: "Archives folder
    on": Local Folders"
under "Synchronization & Storage" ->"Message Synchronizing" -> keep
messages for this account on this machine. I have all the folders checked
    under "Advanced"
under "Disk Space" -> Synchronize all messages regardless of age. And
"Don't delete any messages". It doesn't give me an option to not use
    synchronization.
    Thanks if you can help,
    Keith

Keith, Checking your mail is available for you to read while offline is the easiest way to tell if you have a full offline synchronization of your mail. That is the extent of it in this context.
The 1.2M inbox file will be an MBOX file,
In Thunderbird use the view menu (Alt +V) to ensure that folders is set to all.
In the list to the left you will now (if not before) see "Local Folders" with it's inbox send etc. This is not part of your IMAP account and mail located there is not affected by IMAP synchronization. As a matter of fact moving mail there deletes it from the IMAP server, copying does not.
Having seen the size of your mail (I assume 1.2M is indicative) there is no need for the import export tools (sorry) just select all all the contents of a folder (Ctrl + A) and right click and select copy to and choose a location under Local folders (You can create your own folders there beforehand.)
Now my change of heart re Import/Export. Copying and moving masses of mails in an IMAP situation can cause the synchronization to basically loose the plot. But a couple of Thousand mails should not be sufficient to cause an issue. The import export tools is a work around where the mail leaves Thunderbird and returns to the new location without synchronization.

  • Confused about TDE wallet location !!!

I suppose to add the following lines to sqlnet.ora if i wanted to change the default Wallet Location to orawall folder :
    ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION =
    (SOURCE=
    (METHOD=file)
    (METHOD_DATA=
    (DIRECTORY=/orawall)))
i just confused from the last line that describe the wallet path ....... i mean i don't understand where suppose this location */orawall* exist on my computer , why he didn't write the full path ?

That is the full path to the wallet. I assume Arup's example is using some flavor of Unix, so he presumably created a directory ORAWALL directly off the root.
You can store the wallet in whatever directory you chose. Conventionally, you would choose $ORACLE_BASE/admin/$ORACLE_SID/wallet. On my Windows machine where I have a database with the SID jcave11gr1, that would be
    ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION =
      (SOURCE =
        (METHOD = FILE)
        (METHOD_DATA =
          (DIRECTORY = c:/oracle/admin/jcave11gr1/wallet)

  • I'm confused about the 'Downloading' of songs to my iPad

I thought I understood iTunes Match but now that I have it up and running I'm confused.
I purchased it because I thought it solved my problem - I have a library of songs equaling almost 70gb, and I just bought an iPad that has 64gb of space. I knew there was no way I was going to put my whole library on my iPad so I got iTunes Match. I thought it took all my songs and put them in a cloud and I would stream my songs from the cloud on my iPad. It was a way of still having ACCESS to my library but not physically having the library on my iPad.
But now that I see all the songs on my iPad, I also see theres Download buttons next to each song, and a Download All button under each album.
It looks like when I listen to a song it's being downloaded to my iPad. Is that correct?
So if this is how iTunes Match works, if I listen to every song one time my iPads 64gb will be filled with just songs (which was what I was trying to avoid in the first place)
Please let me know if I have this right or if I'm missing something.
    Thank you

You can delete individual songs by swiping and tapping the "delete" button. Delete entire Albums or Artists by tap-n-hold then tapping the "x." If you want to delete all music go to Settings > General > Usage and tap Music, swipe across it and tap "delete." Deleting an playlist from your iOS device will delete the playlist from iTunes as well.

  • Confused about Mail/Address Book integration

    Hello,
I was under the impression that Mail and Address Book integrate 100% (the two apps continuously sync with each other).
This doesn't seem to be the case for me.
For example, lets say I try to send a message to "Brian" in Mail. If I type Brian two address show up for Brian. One of them is an old address which does NOT show up in Address Book.
How do I remove this unwanted address?
    Thanks!

The Mail.app stores all message recipients in the list of Previous Recipients in Mail which is stored in the primary Address Book data file but is separate from actual Address Book data.
The Mail address autofill feature pulls from the Address Book and the list of Previous Recipients in Mail.
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Window and select Previous Recipients. A previous recipient entered in the Address Book will have a vCard icon to the left of he name or email address. You can remove a previous recipient from the list of add a previous recipient to the Address Book.
Removing a previous recipient from the list has no effect on Address Book entries.

  • Confused about re-download rights

I understood that if you downloaded content from iTunes onto an authorized machine, you could delete it off the machine's internal storage and then re-download it (without another payment) at a later time.  However, I have tried this, and the "available downloads" selection in iTunes shows no available downloads, even though music and movies I have purchased previously are not currently on the computer.  Is there some trick to this feature?  Secondly, is the re-download -- assuming it's actually available at all -- only available on the computer that was authorized at the time of the original purchase?  I made some purchases on a prior Mac, and some on my current one.  It would be nice if any song, tv show, or movie I purchased in the past could be re-downloaded to, and heard/viewed on, my current Mac.

  • Attachments in Mail Downloads folder

I found a folder Home>Library>Mail Downloads which was loaded with about every attachment I have ever received using Mail. I was trying to figure out why. In Mail prefs, there is an option to select a folder, I have chosen Home>Downloads pretty much which is also default for my browser. The action is set to remove unedited copies when message is deleted. I'm confused because it looks like the Destination and Action are independent. When I have an attachment, if I click "Save" it populates the selected path to the "Downloads" folder. If I open that attachment, it seems to populate the Home>Library>Mail folder.
What controls the opened attachments form populating this, somewhat, obscure folder?

    Hi,
Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.

  • Problem of where downloads/attachments go in Mail

    Mail Attachment Download
I use the Mac's mail application, Mail. The default setting for where attachments are found is HOME >> Library >> Mail Downloads. I went into Mail Preferences and changed the downloads location to a folder I created, Attachments, which is a sub-folder in my main folder, Ken's Working Files. The path is as follows: HOME (named by me Ken) >> Documents >> Ken's Working Files >> Attachments. However, the attachments continue to be found in the default location, HOME >> Library >> Mail Downloads. Why can I not change the attachments download location to what I have specified in Mail Preferences?

I think attachments are saved in the folder homefolder/library/mail download when you open that attachment in Mail. that is just a setting/feature you cannot change.
You can save attachments to a designated location, and the default for that is the folder in homefolder/downloads. If you want to change the destination, then indeed go to mail>preferences>general and choose another path/location. Once that is done, the every time you right click on an attachment to save it you will have two options to save, the first being "Save Attachments..." where you have to choose the location, the secon being "Save XXXXX folder" XXXXX being the folder you have specified in mail>preferences>general
    hope this helps

  • I have been unable for the past few days to download attachments to E-mails on my Mac OS using Firefox

I have been able to download attachments to E-mails for years. However, for the last several days the download process which seems okay but the attachment doesn't show up on the screen and a note appears about a blank document. When I switch to Safari, the downloads work fine. Therefore, I assume that the problem is with Firefox.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • Mail attachments aren't being downloaded to Downloads folder?

Whenever I click on an attachment I receive on Mail, I want it to automatically download onto my Downloads folder. However, when I click on an attachment, it opens, but it doesn't appear in my Downloads folder. It only saves onto the hidden "Mail Downloads" folder that you can find by going into your Mac's Library. This is especially irritating when I open an attached word document, edit and save it, close the window, and then attempt to resend the edited attachment through email only to find that it's not in my downloads folder and that the "Mail Downloads" folder only has the original copy (without edits).
Under "Mail Preferences -> General -> Downloads folder:" I have it set to my actual Downloads folder so I don't understand what could be wrong. Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks for the help!
P.S. I know that I can "Save As" the file and put it into my downloads folder, but that's a lot of unnecessary work when I'm downloading multiple attachments.

Select the photo(s) in the email body, Control (right) - click , and select Save to Downloads Folder from the contextual menu:

  • Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!

Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
    Thanks!

  • Changing "Mail Downloads" folder for attachments

It seems in Leopard Mail, when you double click an attachment to open it, it is temporarily saved to ~/Library/Mail Downloads. This is in contrast to (I think) Tiger, where it would be saved to the Downloads folder set in the General preferences. There is still a setting for the Downloads folder in the General preferences, and according to the help window, it is to "Specify the folder in which to temporarily save attachments you open from a message". To me, that means the same as the Tiger behavior. However, if I change this preference to, say, "Desktop", it seems opening an attachment (not explicitly saving it) still saves it to the ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder, not the assigned folder. Is this the correct behavior? If so, the help window is misleading. Personally, I would like the option to change this folder, although I suppose there are workarounds such as changing the Mail Downloads folder to an alias of the desired destination folder.
    thanks.

Ok, so much for that clever workaround. Doesn't work, Mail just throws up an error and refuses to save the attachment. Any other ideas? I just want Mail to auto-save opened attachments onto the Desktop, in case I forget to explicitly save it, and so I don't have to root into subfolders to find it.

  • PSE 7 confusion about folder location, help needed

Here's some background: I'm using PhotoShop Elements 7 on Win XP.  I have an external firewire hard drive I use for overflow/backups.  Originally, this showed up as a K: drive on my system.
I added a RAID controller and two more drives to stripe as a single drive for temp space rendering movies.  This ended up as a K: drive and the external moved to L:  However, when I did this there were some pictures from my catalog that I had on the external drive.  I have used File > reconnect missing files to handle the moves, but PSE is still confused (very).
PSE has started to mix up the RAID (K:) and external (L:) content.  If I move a set of pictures (e.g. a folder of them) onto the external drive (L:) via drag and drop in the folder location view, the folder will show up empty on the L: heirarchy, but will show up as a gray folder icon in the K: RAID drive hierarchy.  If I open up windows explorer, the RAID drive will appear empty.  In other cases (I'm not sure when/how yet), pictures physically end up on the RAID drive itself instead of the external.  I have uninstalled both the external drive and the RAID drive and reinstalled them both, but they are still getting confused in the folder view by PSE.  I've also tried moving content outside of PSE and just reconnecting missing files, but it still wants to put things under the K: RAID drive instead of the external L:.
I've searched everywhere I can think of for a description of what gray folder icons in the folder location view means and can find none.  I'm not sure how to convince PSE that there's nothing on the RAID K: drive and it shouldn't try to connect the two.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Thank you!  I ran psedbtool and the output shows the catalog has the wrong drive letter for the L: drive.
Is there a way to make PSE forget about the K: and L: drives that it is so confused about so that it can relearn of their existence?  If I use the drive letter reassignment to fix PSE, it will break other apps that are now dependent on the current drive letter assignments.  I've tried removing all files from the L: drive, but it's still remembered as part of the catalog.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this.

If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this. Thank you.

The DVD recorder I'm referring to is one I've use for years. It is not attached to my aging iMac in any way. I simply play the video from my camcorder (mini-dv tape based Canon HV20)  into the DVD recorder and create a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. I can only do minimum editing so what goes in is what I get. This has been fine for creating dupes of the various things I shoot.
If I buy a new iMac (21 inch), I'd like to be able to download the video to the iMac through iMovie, work with it to whatever degree I wish, and burn it to a DVD that can also be played in any DVD player -- or to use as a master to dupe copies.
What I'm understanding from you and others is that this would be possible if Apple had included iDVD in the software that comes with the iMac, or if I purchase the iLife Family Pack, or buy the correct version of Toast. I'm hoping I can persuade Apple to sell me an iMac with iDVD installed.
Essentially I want to move from a basic process of creating DVD copies to the more sophisticated process of creating one from an iMac.
Thank you again for your help and wisdom.
